  • Is There Really an Afterlife? 5ch Weighs In: “Nobody’s Ever Actually Died, So How Would We Know”

A thread titled “Ghosts and the afterlife are 100% just made up, right?” appeared on 5ch’s general discussion board, sparking a split in opinion over whether ghosts and the afterlife are real. Alongside the point that no one has ever died and come back, so the claim can be neither proven nor disproven, some argued against their existence citing the brain’s electrical signals and the law of conservation of energy, while others left room for the possibility, noting how much of the universe remains unknown. The thread also brought up the story that physicist Erwin Schrödinger believed individual consciousness returns to one great universal mind after death — turning the discussion into something more nuanced than a simple yes-or-no debate.

If it really existed, we'd have figured it out by now.
    2AnonymousSep 29, 2026 13:42
We don't even know what actually caused the universe to exist in the first place.
    3AnonymousSep 29, 2026 13:42
    Well, obviously.
It was made up out of wishful thinking — "wouldn't it be nice if there was something like this after we die."
    5AnonymousSep 29, 2026 13:43
One thing's for sure: there's no God in organized religion.
    6AnonymousSep 29, 2026 13:43
Ghosts aside, there's no way to know about the afterlife.
Nobody's ever actually died (to tell us).
    15AnonymousSep 29, 2026 13:47
So does someone with dementia get conveniently reset once they reach the afterlife? That's the real question.

My mom, who worried about me — a middle-aged NEET — more than anyone else, died suddenly at home.
I've been calling out to her around the house for years since, and I haven't felt so much as a trace of her, let alone seen her.
    21AnonymousSep 29, 2026 13:51
    Flatly denying it 100%

Fair, but as long as it can't be confirmed,
the thread title calling it "fiction" is correct.

Because it would break the laws of physics.
If some mysterious power like that existed, the universe would collapse.

    Re: #33
Flip it around — maybe there are parts of the universe we don't know about where physics runs on that "spirit energy."
What we actually know about the universe doesn't even add up to 1%.
    35AnonymousSep 29, 2026 14:01
Ghosts and aliens — 100% neither exists.
    41AnonymousSep 29, 2026 14:04

With aliens, we just haven't met them yet.
    39AnonymousSep 29, 2026 14:03
Denying absolutely everything is itself a denial of science.
Science got where it is today by figuring out things nobody understood before.
The moment you say "we don't get it, so it can't exist," scientific progress grinds to a halt.
    43AnonymousSep 29, 2026 14:05
    Re: #39
As for ghosts specifically, that's already been clearly explained by brain disorders and a tendency toward delusion.
    44AnonymousSep 29, 2026 14:06
    Re: #36
Even that "1%" figure is looking shaky these days.
There's actually a theory now that we already understand almost everything.
The current trend is that things like dark matter and dark energy might not even exist.
    49AnonymousSep 29, 2026 14:07
Consciousness is a phenomenon produced by electrical signals in the brain — so once the body's physical life-functions stop, what exactly would go on producing a mind? If you want to argue that spirits DO exist, the burden's on you to explain that part first.
    55AnonymousSep 29, 2026 14:10
    Re: #49
Where does that electricity come from, and where does it go?
In physics, energy is supposed to be conserved — it shouldn't just increase or vanish.
    77AnonymousSep 29, 2026 14:19
    Re: #55
    It doesn't "go" anywhere.
It's just a physical phenomenon following this universe's laws of physics.
When matter churning around the universe happens to settle into a certain stable pattern, consciousness is simply one of the phenomena that arises from that.
    79AnonymousSep 29, 2026 14:20

There's no way we've "already got it figured out."
All anyone's saying is "the universe is probably like this, and given our physics, this is the most likely explanation."
Even relativity isn't perfect — claiming we already understand it all is beyond arrogant.
    88AnonymousSep 29, 2026 14:24
I love ghost stories but don't believe in the occult one bit — whether ghosts actually exist or not, I honestly don't care.
What matters is how good the story is, not whether the ghost is real.
    99AnonymousSep 29, 2026 14:31
    Re: #88
    I get that.
Honestly, not just with ghost stories — without at least a bit of that mindset,
I don't think you can enjoy much entertainment in this world beyond straight documentary.

    95AnonymousSep 29, 2026 14:29
It's a mystery why the self-proclaimed "I have psychic powers, spirits definitely exist" crowd never actually studies it.
If you're that convinced they're real, seems like it'd be worth dedicating your life to researching it.

Apparently Schrödinger believed there was an afterlife — makes you wonder.
Not that your individual personality survives intact, but more that there's one giant mass of consciousness, and when you die you return to it.
    98AnonymousSep 29, 2026 14:29
It's just more convenient all around to assume there IS an afterlife.
Rather than sobbing "noooo, I don't want it to end here" on your deathbed,
it's a lot less stressful to go out thinking "heh heh, I'll become a ghost and peek in on people in the bath."
    101AnonymousSep 29, 2026 14:31
    Re: #98
That's more for the benefit of the people left behind.
The person actually dying probably isn't thinking anything at that point.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

By definition, the only way to verify claims about the afterlife or ghosts would be to ask someone who has died — which puts the question in territory science can neither prove nor disprove. The thread split along a fault line in how people read that unverifiability: some took it as “so it’s fair to call it fiction,” others as “so no definitive conclusion can be drawn either way.” It’s a genuinely documented anecdote that physicist Erwin Schrödinger wrote that he believed individual consciousness returns to some larger universal mind after death, and the thread noted the irony of a towering figure in quantum mechanics holding what looks like an unscientific view of death. Meanwhile, the counter-argument tying the brain’s-electrical-signals explanation of consciousness to the conservation of energy left a loose end of its own: electrical signals dissipating as heat and the separate question of whether “consciousness is conserved” are two different issues, and the thread wrapped up without ever fully untangling them.

*This article is an excerpt and summary of the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyo G) thread “Ghosts and the afterlife are 100% just made up, right?“

  • Miyamoto: ‘Ocarina of Time’ and ‘Princess Mononoke’ Had Shockingly Similar Material

During development of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Shigeru Miyamoto said in a 1999 interview that he was surprised by how much the “material” of the game overlapped with Hayao Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke, which came out around the same time — and the remark has become a hot topic on 5ch’s hardware/industry board. Sparked by his comment that a horse-riding protagonist and a giant creature ended up in both works by coincidence, the thread saw a string of posts cross-checking timelines to figure out “which one thought of it first.” Discussion also spread to the personnel ties between Nintendo’s art department and Studio Ghibli, along with claims that later entries in the series resemble past works, turning this into more than just a simple “ripoff” debate.

Right after finishing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Shigeru Miyamoto discussed the influence he took from Hayao Miyazaki’s film Princess Mononoke in an interview in the February 1999 issue of the gaming magazine Gēmujin. What’s interesting is that it wasn’t just a case of being influenced — he recalled that the two works, made in production at almost the same time, ended up with “material that was shockingly similar” once finished.

During development, staff had floated ideas of using a unicorn or an elk instead of a horse. In the end, Miyamoto decided, “Let’s go with a horse” — and he said Princess Mononoke played a part in that decision. However, Miyamoto didn’t go into detail about exactly how Princess Mononoke influenced the “let’s go with a horse” call.

He then talked about a similarity involving a mounted archer and a giant Goron. Miyamoto pointed to the scene of Link firing a bow while riding on horseback, and the scene of a giant Goron walking with a mountain in the background. While working on these, he recalled, “it turned out that was basically Ashitaka and the Daidarabotchi — I was honestly floored.”

    Japan is amazing
Though with BotW and TotK it feels less like an overlap and more like they deliberately layered it on

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The source is an interview in the February 1999 issue of the gaming magazine Gēmujin, and the backdrop is that Ocarina of Time (released 1998, about 3 years in development) was made at nearly the same time as Princess Mononoke (released 1997, 16 years of conception plus 3 years of production). In the thread, posts checking timelines to determine “which one was conceived first” stood out, but Miyamoto’s own comment wasn’t about “imitation” — he described a coincidental overlap where “the material happened to be similar,” not an admission of copying. That distinction is easy to miss, and the quoted portion of the article doesn’t claim a direct influence either. Another point of discussion was the personnel ties between Nintendo and Ghibli: it was noted that Yoichi Kotabe, who served as art director, had a background as an animator alongside Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki, leading some to frame it less as straightforward copying and more as “the same lineage of creators arriving at similar expressions.” Others pointed to similarities in titles after Breath of the Wild, broadening the discussion from Ocarina of Time alone to the art style of the series as a whole.

  • Ishii Izuha’s Birthday Event Ticket Results Are In — Wave of Rejections Has 5ch Asking ‘Wait, Is Ressa Actually Popular?’

Ticket results have been announced for Tsubaki Factory member Izuha Ishii’s birthday event, scheduled for November 4, 2026 at the Sumida Ward Hikifune Culture Center Theater Hall. Many fans won tickets for the first session but lost out on the second, and some said it was the first time they’d ever been rejected for one of “Ressa’s” (her nickname, derived from “red panda”) birthday events. On 5ch’s Hello! Background and Key Points of This Discussion

For Hello! Project birthday events, venue size is often watched closely as a rough gauge of a member’s popularity and drawing power. This time’s venue, the Hikifune Culture Center Theater Hall, has a relatively small seating capacity, which fueled complaints on the thread about the agency’s venue choice, alongside comments like “Ressa could easily fill a 1000-seat venue.” That said, ticket results can vary depending on the lottery system, how many tickets each person applies for, and recent attendance figures, so the mere fact that some fans were rejected doesn’t necessarily mean a sudden surge in popularity. There have been rejections at past birthday events too, so this occurrence may not be as unusual as it seems — though that’s hard to confirm from thread comments alone, it’s worth keeping in mind. Meanwhile, since the day’s guest was only teased via silhouette, the thread also lit up with fans trying to guess their identity.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “[12:00] Tsubaki Factory Izuha Ishii Birthday Event 2026 Ticket Results Report Thread [Sumida Ward Hikifune Culture Center Theater Hall].”

  • University of Tokyo Names First-Ever Woman President; Calls Selection a ‘Comprehensive Judgment’ — 5ch Smells a Fix

On September 29, the University of Tokyo announced it had chosen its first-ever woman as its new president. According to an Asahi Shimbun report, the selection wasn’t a direct reflection of the “preference vote” cast by faculty and staff, but rather a “comprehensive” decision. In the related thread on 5ch’s Breaking News Plus board, some questioned whether the candidate chosen — the runner-up in the preference vote rather than the top vote-getter — was picked mainly because she’s a woman. Others noted that Japan’s Ministry of Education has long pushed national universities not to weight president selections too heavily toward vote results, and pointed to similar cases at Osaka University and Kyoto University where the top vote-getter wasn’t chosen either, suggesting this isn’t unique to the University of Tokyo.

    143AnonymousSep 29, 2026 12:57
First off, ever since incorporation, the Ministry of Education has been telling universities, in the name of stronger governance, to stop directly turning preference-vote results into the president selection outcome.

"Selection methods that reflect vote results directly in the selection committee's decision, or that otherwise lean too heavily on in-house opinion, aren't appropriate from the standpoint of the committee exercising independent judgment."

As a result, picking a second-place-or-lower candidate, or scrapping the vote altogether, has become pretty normal everywhere, honestly.

Background and key points of this topic

The backdrop here is the 2014 revision of the School Education Act and the National University Corporation Act. National university president selections used to follow a practice where the faculty/staff “preference vote” results were reflected almost directly, but after the legal revision, the vote was repositioned as mere reference information, with the selection committee holding final say. In the thread, posters cited this history and pointed to Osaka University (2021) and Kyoto University (2026), where candidates who hadn’t placed first in the preference vote were likewise chosen, suggesting this isn’t a practice unique to the University of Tokyo. That said, it’s easy to overlook that the preference vote is purely advisory and carries no legal binding force, so a mismatch between the vote and the final selection is itself within the range the system anticipates. It should also be noted that the University of Tokyo hasn’t officially released its actual vote counts, so the numbers discussed in the thread are unverified. Whether the substance of the “comprehensive judgment” was really about promoting a woman or about hopes for university reform remains unclear even from the article itself.

  • Terraria for Xbox Finally Launches in Japan — 5ch Reacts: ‘That Took Forever’

On September 29, 2026, Terraria for Xbox One finally went on sale in Japan. This complete edition includes 15 years’ worth of updates and comes with official Japanese-language support. While Japanese versions had long been available on PC, Switch, and mobile, the Xbox version remained unreleased in Japan for years. Discussion threads debated why the Xbox version alone was left behind, touching on how Spike Chunsoft (the company holding Japanese distribution rights) had localized the PS3 version through its own workaround, and splitting over whether this was a genuine contractual “exclusive” or simply a business decision.

Back in the day this game's code made Japanese localization a massive pain to implement.
So I get why Spike Chunsoft struggled with it.
Sounds like they've since rebuilt it to make localization easier, and the original devs finally got official Japanese support working.
    15AnonymousSep 29, 2026 12:26
The fact that it's 505's Japan branch releasing it instead of Spike Chunsoft, just for Xbox, really smells like some shady contract stuff.

    There's precedent for this.

Take Metal Gear Rising — its Japanese release got cancelled right before the Xbox 360 launch, and sites like Hachima (a gaming blog) piled on saying 'it's because it won't sell in Japan!' But it later came out that it was actually a Japan-only PlayStation exclusivity deal, which got exposed by the fact that even the Steam version is still region-locked in Japan to this day.

The reason these domestic exclusivity deals never get made public is that they'd flat-out violate antitrust law.

    Re: #24
Well yeah, because it's specifically a Japan-only block.
    38AnonymousSep 29, 2026 12:47

    20AnonymousSep 29, 2026 12:32
So it was originally built on XNA, which was made for the 360, and yet it never came out there?
    42AnonymousSep 29, 2026 12:48
Credit where it's due — Spike Chunsoft's hack-job localization back then was impressive.
But updates were noticeably delayed partly because of their own custom item additions, and honestly that part's hard to defend lol.

    Re: #20
Spike Chunsoft held the sales rights in Japan, so it never came to Xbox there (though you could still buy it from overseas stores, which fall under 505 Games' territory). Japanese support was added to the Xbox version maybe 1-2 years ago, and now, finally, it's gone on sale on the Japanese Xbox store today.

Overseas it was out since the 360, but domestically Spike Chunsoft got the rights and, out of loyalty (to Sony), shut out PC and Xbox — the Japanese version ended up as a PS3 exclusive.

    Exactly right.
The fact that it released normally on platforms that didn't even exist at the time the contract was signed suggests this wasn't platform exclusivity at all, but rather an exclusion clause naming specific platforms — what people call 'block rights.'
    47AnonymousSep 29, 2026 12:49
Wait, so there was a 15-year exclusivity deal signed way back then?
Was it really that big a title at the time?
    51AnonymousSep 29, 2026 12:52
    Re: #47
There was no contract or anything.
Spike Chunsoft simply didn't release it on Xbox because they figured it wouldn't sell.
The official build didn't have the capacity to support Japanese (multi-byte characters).

Once they overhauled the engine and the official version could handle Japanese, a Japanese Xbox version became possible too. That's the whole story.

If they were paying money to block it, they'd block the Switch version.
Paying money just to keep blocking the Xbox version — which barely sells anyway — makes no logical sense.

It always comes down to this.

No contracts involved — Xbox just got left out because it doesn't sell.
Now it's PlayStation's turn to get the same treatment.
From a console-war ("geha") standpoint, that's just fine, isn't it?

The conspiracy theories from Xbox loyalists are exhausting.
    85AnonymousSep 29, 2026 13:16

5plus didn't sell all that well on Vita, but once it got ported to Switch and PC — platforms with plenty of spec headroom — it took off. So they got motivated, made 6, and supplied it to the platforms that were actually selling well. Series sales record updated. Guess they don't need PlayStation.

That's really all there is to it.

Background and Key Points of Debate

Terraria launched in 2011 as a sandbox game. At the time, the Xbox 360 version had trouble supporting multi-byte characters (i.e., Japanese) due to character-encoding limitations, so in Japan, Spike Chunsoft (often shortened to “SupaChun”) localized only the PS3 version through its own custom workaround. Afterward, the PC, Switch, and mobile versions each received official Japanese localization, but the Xbox version’s engine remained unsupported for multiple languages for years. This time, an engine overhaul finally enabled official Japanese support, and with the publisher shifting to 505 Games Japan, the release has now happened. Thread posters split between two theories: that Sony paid to secretly block the Xbox release, versus that Xbox was simply deprioritized because it doesn’t sell well in Japan — neither backed by conclusive evidence. Similar past cases, such as the cancelled Japanese release of Metal Gear Rising, were brought up for comparison, but whether an exclusivity clause actually existed is something only the parties involved would know, and it’s worth noting this cannot be stated as confirmed fact.

  • Dragon Quest Walk finally adds the skill on/off toggle everyone wanted — but locks it behind a paywall, and players are furious

Dragon Quest Walk players have long complained that during auto-battle, skills they’ve selected often don’t get used automatically, and there had been repeated requests for a per-skill on/off toggle. That feature has now been added — but only for subscribers to the “Gold Pass,” which works out to roughly 3,000 yen a month, drawing criticism from free-to-play users who called it “deliberately making the game inconvenient just so they can sell you the fix.” The thread saw a mix of defenses (“of course paying customers get treated better”) and counterarguments (“if free players quit, the game dies out and paying users suffer too”), escalating into name-calling that included the slur “kojiki” (beggar) aimed at non-paying players.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Dragon Quest Walk will mark its 7th anniversary in 2026. The “Gold Pass” at the center of this controversy is a subscription-style paid plan that includes a discount item usable once per week, working out to roughly 3,000 yen a month. Some in the thread mistakenly assumed Square Enix was the developer/operator, but the game is actually run by Colopl — a misunderstanding that was corrected within the original thread itself. The central debate is whether it’s fair to make an already-requested feature pay-only: some saw it as simply monetizing a normal convenience feature, while others saw it as deliberately leaving the game inconvenient first and then charging to fix it. The sniping between free and paying users is a familiar routine in these threads, though it never escalated into attacks on specific individuals.

  • A 50-Year-Old Who Once Struggled With Thinning Hair Walks the Paris Fashion Week Runway: ‘I Never Imagined My Life Could Change This Much’

An article from the Mainichi Shimbun’s “My Life Shift” series was highlighted, about a 50-year-old man who once struggled with thinning hair and walked the runway at Paris Fashion Week, saying “I never imagined my life could change this much.” On 5ch’s News Express+ board, reactions poured in over his 189cm (6’2″) height and the confident way he carried himself despite his thinning hair. The thread lit up with a wide range of topics — from opinions that it’s better to just shave thinning hair off than try to hide it, to jokes that in Paris even thinning hair gets embraced as a form of individuality, to debates over whether he looks old or young for his age.

    Background and Talking Points

The article is framed as a personal story from the Mainichi Shimbun’s lifestyle series, about someone who overcame an appearance-related insecurity to take on a new challenge. In recent years the fashion industry has drawn attention for casting that isn’t bound by age, body type, or hairstyle, and this case caught people’s eye as part of that trend. Where opinions in the thread split was on aesthetics: some argued it’s cleaner to boldly shave off thinning hair, while others said that precisely because it’s Paris, thinning hair reads as a form of individuality. Comments about his 189cm (6’2″) frame and his age also went back and forth between “he looks old” and “he doesn’t,” suggesting how much impressions of looks vary from person to person. It’s worth noting that since the original article is behind a paid subscriber wall, the 5ch discussion is a reaction built up from just the headline and summary.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (News Express+) thread “[彡⌒ミ] A Thinning-Haired 50-Year-Old Turned Dashing Ikeoji Heads to Paris Fashion Week — ‘I Never Imagined My Life Could Change This Much’.”

  • Wolverine’s Used Price Crashes to ¥3,500 Just Three Days After Launch — 5ch: ‘Not the Bargain Bin, Nooo!’

Famitsu’s weekly software sales Top 30 was updated on September 29, sparking discussion on 5ch’s “Hardware/Industry (Geha)” board. The biggest talking point was Marvel’s Wolverine (PS5) struggling out of the gate — just days after release, reports surfaced that its used buyback price had already dropped from ¥4,000 to ¥3,500, and the thread quickly filled with jokes about it ending up stuffed into a lucky bag or wheeled out on the clearance cart. Meanwhile, the new release AKIBA LOST failed to chart at all, while Yo-kai Watch 1 for Nintendo Switch — released roughly five and a half years ago — quietly climbed onto the Top 30 for the first time on the strength of steady slow sales, drawing extra attention to the ranking’s surprise movements.

Square Enix's Haru Yukite Retorochika, released around the same time as AKIBA LOST, cast more mainstream-friendly actors than Ishii's game, so I figured it'd sell better than any 428 spiritual successor would.

Saros and Toukon: "Pro Spirits, Beast — this load's too heavy for you two."

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Famitsu’s weekly ranking is compiled mainly from physical package distribution data, which means it tends to underrepresent actual sales on platforms with a high share of digital purchases. Commenters on the thread pushed back on this very point (posts #79 and #90), arguing that “PS just looks like it’s struggling because 90% of its sales are digital” — hinting at the deeper issue that judging a new release’s success or failure by package ranking alone may be premature. Likewise, a crashing used buyback price tends to get treated as an unofficial industry barometer, but in practice it’s heavily shaped by store inventory imbalances and distribution volume, and doesn’t necessarily track with how popular a game actually is. At the same time, cases like Yo-kai Watch 1 — still selling steadily more than five years after release and only now cracking the chart for the first time — highlight the existence of long-sellers that a short-term snapshot like the weekly Top 30 simply can’t capture.

  • Chain Restaurants’ Use of Chinese Vegetables Exposed by Name — Some Refuse to Comment

Daily Shincho surveyed major restaurant chains about their use of Chinese-grown vegetables and published the responses with company names attached. Gyoza no Ohsho said everything was domestic except for Chinese bamboo shoots, while Ringer Hut said all its vegetables — even the pickles — were domestic, but Kourakuen and Osaka Ohsho reportedly never gave a specific answer. On 5ch, reactions to footage of cabbage being trampled underfoot and used as an ashtray mixed with suspicion toward the chains that refused to answer, alongside pushback that “being domestic doesn’t automatically mean safe.” Opinion split over which chains can actually be trusted.

Anything not domestic is basically at a level you shouldn't be eating anyway.
    Disgusting.

Always check the country of origin.

Gyoza no Ohsho going all-domestic on vegetables does have some merit. Though it's probably cancelled out by all that greasy oil lol

But Gyoza no Ohsho has been raising prices so much that customers are leaving and business seems to be suffering. Set meals are over 1,000 yen now, so it doesn't feel like a bargain anymore.

Most restaurant chains use Chinese ingredients. There's no way you could eat that cheap otherwise. Seriously, get it through your head that cheap stuff has a reason for being cheap, and drop the deflation mindset already.

You can really see each company's attitude here.

The ones just saying "we don't use it" with no other comment probably have something to hide, but there are companies covering up even worse stuff, which makes these ones look decent by comparison.

    So Kourakuen is guilty, huh.

"Among chains offering Chinese food and ramen on their menus, a refusal-to-answer stance stood out at several companies.

Kourakuen, headquartered in Fukushima Prefecture — known for Kitakata ramen — and running 358 stores mainly across eastern Japan, kept saying 'I'll pass it on to the person in charge' but never actually answered.

In contrast to Osaka Ohsho, which used polite language but effectively refused to answer, Gyoza no Ohsho said all of its main ingredients were 'entirely domestic' except for Chinese bamboo shoots. Ringer Hut, famous for Nagasaki champon, went so far as to use all-domestic vegetables even in its pickles and side dishes."

Background and Key Points of Debate

This story originated from a hygiene scandal: footage that spread on social media showing workers in some Chinese vegetable-growing regions trampling cabbage underfoot and dropping cigarette butts on it. In response, Daily Shincho directly asked major restaurant chains whether they use Chinese-grown vegetables, then published the results by name, listing which companies answered and which stayed silent. The thread split along two lines: the view that “the companies refusing to answer are the most suspicious,” and the counterargument that “domestic doesn’t necessarily mean safe.” The latter shows up in comments pointing out that even domestic farms often rely on foreign technical-intern labor paid low wages, and that mislabeling the place of origin is far from rare. One point readers can easily misread: the article isn’t accusing the companies that said they “do use” Chinese vegetables of wrongdoing — it’s simply laying out each company’s stance toward the inquiry (all-domestic, partly domestic, no response, or refusal). Even so, some commenters treated the list as a straightforward “danger ranking.”

  • Ran Takahashi’s Brother, Rui Takahashi, Comes Out as Gay: ‘A Talk With My Brother Was the Turning Point’

Rui Takahashi (26), a SV League player for Suntory and the older brother of Japan men’s national volleyball team star Ran Takahashi, came out as gay on his Instagram on September 29. He revealed he had struggled with it since childhood, but after spending roughly two years on the same team as Ran and talking things over with him, he was finally able to “accept himself.” On 5channel, opinions split between “did he really need to announce this?” and “living a lie must have been far more painful,” with many posts also drawing comparisons to his brother Ran’s dating history.

Rui Takahashi (26), who plays in the men’s SV League for Suntory and is the older brother of national team star Ran Takahashi, updated his Instagram on the 29th to announce that he is gay.

He posted a statement titled “An Announcement,” writing: “Since I was young, I was afraid to face one part of myself, struggled with it, and denied who I was. That part is that I am gay, one of the sexual minorities.”

He explained the circumstances leading up to his announcement at length: “Spending about two years on the same team as my younger brother Ran meant more to me than anything, and talking with him is what first let me accept myself. Putting my feelings into words helped me sort out my heart, and little by little I came to feel that it’s okay to just be myself.”

Public figures like him get asked way more personal questions than ordinary people, so I think it's understandable.
Interviewers basically always assume you're straight, and being marketed as "the brother of" his popular national-team brother probably comes up a lot too.
Keep hiding it and piling up lies long enough, and eventually it gets exhausting — of course you'd want to come out.
    35AnonymousSep 29, 2026 10:44
What was the point of announcing it?

I mean, "otoko no ko" (crossdressing pretty-boy) porn is trending these days.

    (Speaking as a straight guy.)

At an age where people start thinking about marriage, if you don't announce it, women interested in dating him are bound to show up.

it also saves the women considering him from wasting their time.

Now that you mention it, *NSYNC, Westlife, Boyzone — whenever you get 5 or 6 guys together, there's always one who's gay.

Background and Key Points of This Story

The SV League, where Rui Takahashi plays, only launched in 2024 as Japan’s new top domestic men’s volleyball league, and it remains rare in Japan for an active male professional athlete to publicly disclose his own sexual orientation. Thread comments split between “did he really need to announce this?” and a defense of “living a lie must be harder,” reflecting differing values on how coming out should be viewed. It’s worth noting that Rui only disclosed his own sexual orientation — he made no statement whatsoever about his brother Ran’s orientation. Since sexual orientation varies between individuals even among blood relatives, speculation dragging the family into it has no factual basis.
