  • Endless opinions pour in about “professions I look down on” — 5ch reacts: “The poster’s own job is probably only a notch above it”

A thread titled “Jobs I genuinely look down on” popped up on 5ch’s Live News board. Posters piled in with specific professions — septic tank pump-out workers, temp staffers, food delivery couriers — while plenty of replies turned the joke back on the OP: “The people looking down on these jobs are probably only a little better off themselves.”

A guy I know who pumps out septic tanks for a living used to get drunk and go, "Yeah, I do this kind of work, but at least I've got money… I really do…" all the time.
I never meant to look down on him, but it made me wonder how many times people had said that kind of thing to him before.

These days it's a rarity since sewer systems are everywhere now, but I heard from a waste collector that back in the day, doing house-to-house pump-outs used to get you juice and tips all the time.
Apparently they could live off the tips alone and pocket their whole salary.

    Re: #97
Septic tanks? What countryside are you even living in

    Background and Key Points

For readers outside Japan, a few of the jobs named need context. Septic-tank “pump-out” workers (the guy in post 15, driving what’s called a *bakyūmu-kā* or vacuum truck) were essential in Japan for decades because public sewer lines didn’t reach most households until quite recently — Japan’s nationwide sewerage penetration rate only passed 80% in the 2000s, and rural areas still rely on septic tanks today, which is why the tipping culture posters describe in #39 existed. Pharmacy in Japan was reformed in 2006 into a mandatory six-year university program, which is the basis for #46’s complaint that drugstore clerks are “wasting” that training. And post 32’s claim that sex work is “illegal” in Japan is technically half-true: Japan’s 1956 Anti-Prostitution Law bans only vaginal intercourse for pay, leaving a large legal gray-zone industry (fashion health, soaplands, delivery health) that operates openly — which is likely why #45 pushed back.

The thread didn’t really split over which jobs deserve contempt; nearly everyone agreed on the same handful (temp staff, delivery drivers, YouTubers, telemarketers). The actual fault line was whether looking down on any job is legitimate at all — a vocal minority (#53, #56, #73) argued that contempt says more about the poster’s own insecurity or ignorance than about the job itself, essentially rejecting the thread’s premise.

What outside readers might miss: posts like #95, from an actual caregiver saying families look down on caregiving staff, point to a real and persistent status/pay problem in Japan’s elder-care sector, a policy issue distinct from the thread’s joking tone.

  • From Fan Devotion to McDonald’s Meals to Tora-san Talk: A Thread Gone Completely Off the Rails

A thread that kicked off with the question “Are you guys into oshikatsu (fan-support activities)?” spiraled off in every direction from there — VTuber pics and clips, ribbing a poster who was quietly studying alone at McDonald’s, home-vegetable-garden advice, and a debate over the best entries in the Tora-san film series. Re: #173
The Ruriko Asaoka episode and the Kaori Momoi episode

    Background and Key Points

The board this thread comes from, Nandemo Jikkyo (“anything goes live”), is one of 5channel’s fastest-moving general chat spaces — threads are less about their opening topic than about whatever image or tangent someone drops next, which is why “are you into oshikatsu?” (fan-support spending: merch, event tickets, gacha pulls for one’s favorite idol or character) could detour through hololive VTuber clips, a stranger’s convenience-store dinner, and a 1970s film franchise inside a hundred-odd posts. The VTuber references (Laplus, Kanata, Himemori Luna) point to hololive, the dominant Japanese VTuber agency whose talents build fandoms almost entirely around live-streamed personas rather than physical idols, which is precisely the kind of oshikatsu the thread’s opener meant. Tora-san (Otoko wa Tsurai yo) is a Shochiku film series that ran 48 installments from 1969 to 1995 and holds the Guinness record for most films starring the same lead actor; each entry drops the itinerant hero into a new town where he falls for that film’s “Madonna,” a rotating heroine played by a different actress every time — Keiko Takeshita, Ruriko Asaoka, and Kaori Momoi are three of dozens of one-off love interests, not competing storylines.

The thread never really argued over oshikatsu itself; the closest thing to a dispute was whether the lone McDonald’s poster deserved a friendly ribbing or a photo request, with posters flip-flopping between “nobody wants to see that” and “no wait, please post it.”

What’s easy to miss without Japanese context: the “weak man” jab is a stock self-deprecating meme term for a socially awkward, low-status guy, not a literal insult — and the Tora-san favorites listed aren’t ranked against a single continuous plot, since each numbered entry is a near-standalone story unified only by its wandering protagonist.

  • Is ‘Super Robot Wars F’ a Classic? 5ch Can’t Agree

A poster on 5ch’s “Live Anything G” board, who bought both halves of the Saturn version of Super Robot Wars F for 500 yen total, started a thread asking “Is this really a classic?”

Complaints piled up over the game’s unreasonable difficulty—low hit rates, long waits before enemies counterattack—while the discussion also branched into comparisons with other Super Robot Wars titles like AP, Masoukishin, and the Complete Box.

This is the only Super Robot Wars game I've ever played, and it was rough enough to make me never want to touch the series again.
Your units get one-shot constantly, so you end up poking enemies from outside their range and save-scumming (リセマラ, reset-and-retry grinding) over and over until some 10%-hit-rate move finally lands. Truly miserable.

    There's a PS1 game called Super Tokusatsu Wars that's even worse difficulty-wise —

If it's a game about steamrolling everything with your favorite robots, then yeah, the easy, comfortable ones are better.
And if what you actually want is a high-quality tactics game, you shouldn't be playing Super Robot Wars for that in the first place.
    84AnonymousAug 22, 2026 18:11
Honestly, these games are built around save-scumming.
If someone can clear the whole thing without save-and-reload, that's genuinely impressive.

Yeah, in F there are moments where you basically need Hot-Blood, Grit, or a Critical to pull through, so that's fair.
Outside of that though I don't reload much.
Though I guess some people hate the parry mechanic enough to reload over it.
    91AnonymousAug 22, 2026 18:13

    92AnonymousAug 22, 2026 18:13
Even among Winky Soft games, F sold well enough that people still talk about how bad it is,

    Re: #107
Lately more and more people are throwing around the word "unfair" pretty carelessly.

    Background and Key Points

Super Robot Wars is Banpresto’s long-running tactical crossover series that lets players pilot mecha from franchises like Gundam, Mazinger, and Getter Robo in the same battles; it began on the original Game Boy in 1991 and has since split into dozens of entries across different developers and difficulty philosophies. F and its sequel, F Final Chapter (Kanketsu-hen), came out in 1997 for Sega Saturn and PlayStation and were made by Winky Soft, a studio whose SRW titles (this one, the “Complete Box” compilation of the 1st–3rd games, Masoukishin) became notorious for punishing, RNG-heavy combat: low hit rates, unskippable battle animations, and counterattacks with agonizing wind-up. Banpresto eventually moved the series to other studios, which is why later, more forgiving entries like Alpha, AP, and MX exist — a shift the thread never states outright but that explains why posters treat “easy and fun” as a different lineage from “Winky-hard.”

The thread doesn’t actually agree that F is bad; it splits on whether the difficulty is legitimate old-school challenge (build up one strong unit via resupply/repair, lean on spirit commands like Hot-Blood or Luck) versus simply “unfair” design — RNG so harsh it forces save-scumming rather than skill. A side debate over whether the series has any “classic” at all, given no title has reportedly sold a million copies, never gets resolved either.

Readers unfamiliar with 90s Japanese SRPGs may assume the lack of a skip button was laziness; it was closer to the technical and design norm of the era, and Winky Soft’s stated reason — not wanting players to skip animations “they worked hard to make” — reflects that mindset directly, even as players called it ego.

    Background and Key Points

Chiben Wakayama High School is one of the powerhouse programs of Koshien, the national high school baseball tournament held every summer at Hanshin Koshien Stadium and treated as a huge national event in Japan, drawing TV audiences and local pride far beyond what American high school sports get. Its official name uses the old-style kanji for “ben” (辯 instead of 弁), which is why a poster’s very first comment fixates on how imposing the written characters look before any game details are even discussed — that’s a distinctly Japanese reaction, since kyūjitai (old-style kanji) forms read as formal, traditional, or intimidating to native readers in a way that doesn’t translate visually into English at all.

The thread doesn’t actually argue about anything baseball-related; there’s no real split of opinion on Chiben’s win itself, which is mentioned once and then dropped. If there’s a “split,” it’s tonal — some posters try to stay on-topic (spoilers, Koshien, congratulations) while others immediately hijack the thread into Demon Slayer manga talk, expired eggs, mentaiko, sausages tossed with ketchup and mustard, and cat islands, and the thread’s appeal is that one user keeps replying to literally everyone regardless of subject.

What foreign readers will likely miss: this rambling, non-sequitur format is completely normal for Newsokuvip (VIP), one of 5channel’s oldest and most freewheeling boards, where thread topics are treated as disposable launching pads rather than binding subjects — unlike more topic-disciplined boards. The mentaiko warning about gout is a real, commonly cited dietary caution in Japan tied to fish roe’s high purine content, not a joke specific to this thread.

  • Morning Musume’s ‘Homamei’ — When Will They Graduate? 5ch Users Can’t Agree

On 5ch’s Hello! Project board, users have been debating when the duo nicknamed “Homamei” — which includes Morning Musume 15th-generation member Homare Okamura — will graduate. Specific guesses like “seven years from now” and “she won’t graduate until she’s 26” got thrown around, while others argued the pair should stick around a bit longer because the younger members’ singing just isn’t up to par yet. Opinions were sharply divided.

    14AnonymousAug 22, 2026 15:47

    15AnonymousAug 22, 2026 15:47
If these two — the group's strongest singers — leave, current Musume is in real trouble. I think a dual-ace setup for a few more years makes sense, even though I oshi someone else.
    18AnonymousAug 22, 2026 15:49
The fact that Homamei gets treated as the dual ace shows how far Musume has fallen. They're losing to Ebamifu in pretty much every category, let alone Yumeriai.

    33AnonymousAug 22, 2026 15:57

    Re: #33
Yamazaki will quit either at the same time as Nonaka or right after her. If Okamura graduates, Yamazaki becomes the oldest member left (the dreaded 'BBA'), and her pride — she's nicknamed 'Era' — won't allow that.

    Re: #105
As for how Oda rates them: Inoharu > Homamei. What did you make of the song arrangement that made that so blatantly obvious?

    Background and Key Points

Morning Musume, the flagship idol group of Tsunku’s Hello! Project stable since 1997, has run through seventeen “generations” of recruits, and the group’s real controversy has never been talent — it’s timing. Members historically “graduated” (idol-speak for a formal, ceremonial departure) around 25, but recent years have seen that norm slip toward 27-28 as veterans like Haruna Ishida stayed on. “Homamei” refers to the duo of Homare Okamura and presumably Meimi (Mei-chan, noted as graduating next spring), both fifteenth-generation members who joined in 2019 and are now seen as the group’s strongest vocalists — a title that in a fandom this obsessed with rankings carries real weight, since it implicitly measures them against younger, weaker-singing generations and against rival H!P units like Angerme and BEYOOOOONDS.

The thread didn’t split on whether Homamei should eventually leave — everyone assumes they will — but on how long “eventually” is. Guesses ranged from a firm four years (pegged to Okamura’s current age of 21) out to seven, with posters anchoring their math to different precedents: some to Ishida’s own late-twenties exit, others to how long it’ll take Gen 16 and 17 to develop comparable vocal ability, and others to a rumored planned exit by fellow senior member Yamazaki.

What’s easy to miss reading this from outside Japan is that “graduation” isn’t a member choosing to quit a job — it’s a semi-scripted lifecycle event tied to age-appropriateness expectations for idols, which is why posters can debate it years in advance like a retirement calendar rather than a personnel guess. The thread also never explains the “bus tour incident” it references as reputational baggage for Gen 15, leaving newer readers without that context.

    Re: #117

    120AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:36
    Re: #117
How would they even recoup the cost?

    Background and Key Points

Coke costs 500 yen at a Mt. Fuji summit vending machine because everything above the fifth station has to be hauled up by bulldozer, helicopter, or on the backs of porters — Mt. Fuji has no road or cable car to its 3,776m peak, so vendors running the mountain huts pay for that logistics out of pocket, and it’s a known, decades-old arrangement rather than a new scandal. Similarly, huts and even public toilets on the mountain (and at other national parks like Kamikochi) charge fees because there’s no municipal utility service; someone has to pack out waste and maintain facilities without any public subsidy covering the trail itself. Climbers are also told water actually boils around 90°C at that altitude, not 100°C, due to lower atmospheric pressure — a genuine physical fact, not an urban myth, which is why cup noodles never quite cook properly at the summit.

The thread’s actual fault line wasn’t “is 500 yen expensive” — nobody defended it as cheap — but whether the transport-cost justification holds up at all once compared to other “expensive” venues. Posters citing Tokyo Dome’s 400 yen Coke argued that a stadium in central Tokyo, with elevators and paved loading docks, still charges only slightly less than a summit reachable only by manual portage, which undercuts the logistics excuse rather than supporting it.

What outside readers might miss is that this isn’t really a free market: mountain huts on Fuji operate under long-standing concessions inside a national park, so new entrants can’t simply undercut them by opening a cheaper stall, which is why the “just start your own business there” rebuttals in the thread got dismissed as naive rather than as real competitive pressure.

    Background and Key Points

5ch (formerly 2channel) is Japan’s largest anonymous forum, and “Nanji Jikkyou” (なんJ) is one of its busiest sports/variety subforums, known for fast-moving joke threads that can turn serious in seconds. The GPU in question, an RTX 5090, is Nvidia’s current flagship card, retailing well above ¥300,000 in Japan — so a “free” giveaway suddenly gated behind a ¥10,000 Amazon gift card is instantly recognizable to Japanese readers as the classic small-deposit-before-the-big-payout script used in phone and SNS fraud. The board link posters dropped, internethotline.jp, is not a joke; it’s Japan’s real Internet Hotline Center, a body commissioned by the National Police Agency to field reports of exactly this kind of solicitation.

The thread didn’t split over whether gift-card-first requests are shady — everyone agreed on that. The actual disagreement was over motive: some treated OP as a garden-variety scammer to be reported, while others (after OP claimed it was “just a drill”) suspected the whole thing was a bait/troll post, with one user even accusing OP of replying to himself using multiple IDs to keep the ridicule going.

What outside readers likely miss is the “ID” checking culture on 5ch: each post carries a per-thread ID, and sites like hissi.org let anyone pull up every post that ID made that day, which is exactly how the sockpuppet accusation got made — a built-in, community-run anti-spam mechanism unique to this kind of board culture.

  • JA Chairman: ‘¥3,500 for 5kg of Rice Is a Fair Price’ — Hints at Cutting Farmer Advance Payments

Miyata, chairman of the prefectural JA (Japan Agricultural Cooperatives) Group, has proposed 3,500 yen per 5kg as a price both producers and consumers could accept, while also hinting at a major cut to the advance payments made to farmers. On 5channel, reactions ranged from defenders saying “they just want to make JA the villain,” to posts describing the reality of rice oversupply and users’ own declining rice consumption, to suspicion about why prices aren’t actually falling.

Amid continued rice oversupply driven by persistently high prices, the prefectural JA Group indicated on the 26th that 3,500 yen per 5kg would serve as a benchmark price acceptable to both producers and consumers.
Miyata, chairman of the prefectural JA Group, hinted at a major reduction in the "advance payment" — the sum paid to farmers when purchasing their rice.

I got hooked on Ken Min's yaki-beefun (stir-fried rice vermicelli) during the rice shortage and just stopped eating rice after that.

    54AnonymousAug 22, 2026 14:17
Places like Canada and India grow rice just fine and get bumper harvests even at 50°C, yet Japanese TV news ran the lie that a mere 40°C heatwave was causing a 'rice shortage.'

In reality, the 2024 harvest was actually bigger than the previous year's:
    2023: 7.166 million tons
2024: 7.346 million tons ← the 'rice shortage' started in July
    2025: 7.468 million tons

And yet it got spun as the worst rice shortage in history, and the price of a 10kg bag tripled.

What's really scary is that when the new-crop rice harvested in September 2024 and September 2025 hit the market, prices didn't drop — they kept climbing. That can only mean price manipulation.

Prices finally peaked on January 4, 2026, and have been falling since.

🇯🇵 Rice Prices Post Record 40% Plunge — 'More Farmers May Quit Farming' — New-Crop Standard Koshihikari Now Around ¥4,000 for 5kg
    https://news.yahoo.co.jp/articles/95285f23377fff5bd4d1cd53f4bc483842a81b1b

The rice glut is hitting farmers hard.
Standard Koshihikari, the most widely traded variety, has fallen from ¥30,000 per 60kg in 2025 to ¥18,500.
Similarly, 'Shinnosuke' has dropped from ¥31,000 in 2025 to ¥19,000 — both declines of roughly 40%.
That's the largest drop on record.

    ■'More Farmers May Quit Farming'
The cause is the rice glut.
After record price surges, huge amounts of the 2025 harvest are still sitting unsold.

    140AnonymousAug 22, 2026 14:48
American rice is being sold in Japan now — it was ¥1,980 for 5kg.
I've eaten it twice and it's tasty.
If nobody told me, I don't think I could tell it apart from domestic rice.
    149AnonymousAug 22, 2026 14:50
    Re: #140
Lol, you've just been eating bad rice every day.
No wonder you can't tell the difference.

    Background and Key Points

JA — the Japan Agricultural Cooperatives group — is not one company but a nationwide federation of regional co-ops that collects rice from member farmers, markets it, and fronts them money before the crop is even sold. That upfront sum is the “advance payment” (仮払金/概算金): a provisional per-bag price paid at harvest, settled later once JA knows what it actually earned reselling the rice. When chairman Miyata floats ¥3,500 per 5kg as fair and hints at cutting that advance, he’s really talking about lowering what farmers get guaranteed now, not announcing a retail price cut. This matters against the backdrop of Japan’s 2024-2025 “rice crisis,” when bag prices roughly tripled even though harvest tonnage rose every year from 2023 to 2025 (7.166m → 7.346m → 7.468m tons) — a mismatch between reported shortage and actual supply that fueled talk of hoarding or manipulation further up the distribution chain, with prices only turning down after peaking around January 4, 2026.

The thread’s real fault line isn’t for-or-against farmers; it’s whether JA is the culprit or merely the visible face of a system where futures markets, middlemen, and Norinchukin Bank’s own losses shape prices upstream, versus posters who think falling consumption (less rice eaten per meal, more bread/sweets, cheap imported rice) is the actual driver of the current glut.

What outsiders often miss is that JA doesn’t set consumer prices directly — supermarkets and wholesalers do — so a “fair price” pledge from JA leadership is a negotiating signal to its own farmer members and buyers, not a price control announcement, which is why posters kept asking why shelf prices weren’t moving even as JA talked numbers.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5channel (Nandemo Jikkyo G) thread “JA Chairman: ‘Rice at 3,500 yen per 5kg is a price producers and consumers can accept. Below that, it’s hard to sell.’“.

  • 5ch Reacts to Supermarket Manga: Part-Timer’s Solo Price Cuts Spark Debate

A scene from a manga set in a supermarket sparked discussion on 5ch’s “Live: Anything Goes” board. The scene showed a part-time worker unilaterally discounting products to avoid customer complaints — some praised her as “competent,” while others pushed back: “She just wants to dodge complaints, that’s selfish” and “She shouldn’t have that kind of authority in the first place.”

The manager’s handling of the situation, along with an episode about a former manager who made staff work through their breaks, also drew accusations of being “way too incompetent” — and even the manga’s title itself came under fire.

Even while dressing it up with nice-sounding words, the author's actually competent for putting the real truth into words
    107AnonymousAug 22, 2026 14:48
The way this is drawn like the part-timer is doing something smart — isn't that actually a contrarian jab at "a mere part-timer overstepping her place"?
Is this manga seriously playing it straight?
    123AnonymousAug 22, 2026 14:51
What's the title of this manga?
    134AnonymousAug 22, 2026 14:53
    Re: #123
Just looked it up — turns out the title's literally something like "Got Fired for a Mere Part-Timer Overstepping Her Place" lol
    136AnonymousAug 22, 2026 14:53
Sure, she's a wild part-timer who unilaterally sells off Kyoho grapes for 98 yen, but she seems to be more like a part-timer leader figure, so she couldn't be fired this easily
Even setting the legal issues aside, if all the part-timers quit together the store can't function

If it's a chain supermarket, you could just call someone in to cover as a stopgap
    147AnonymousAug 22, 2026 14:55
Is the point that if she's that motivated, she should just become a full-time employee?

More like, start your own business and do it under your own responsibility

    Background and Key Points

The manga scene is a fairly standard convenience-store/supermarket workplace trope in Japan: single-item price markdowns near closing or when stock runs short are a routine, manager-authorized practice used to move perishables like fish, bento, or produce before they spoil, since Japanese retail chains operate on thin margins and heavy customer-service expectations. What the thread reacted to wasn’t the discounting itself but who gets to decide it — the manga shows a part-timer (arubaito), someone explicitly outside the store’s management hierarchy, making that call alone to head off a complaint rather than escalating it, which reads to many posters as an overstep of her actual authority and responsibility.

The split in the thread was less about whether discounting was the right business call — plenty of posters agreed the grapes-for-98-yen gag showed she got results — and more about motive and legitimacy: is unilaterally slashing prices “competent problem-solving” when she’s shielding herself from complaints she’d personally field, or is it “selfish,” since as a part-timer she bears none of the store’s profit risk and has no formal authority to reprice stock. Several also noted that a customer-facing explanation like “we couldn’t restock due to a typhoon” is standard, accepted practice in Japan, making the shown customer backlash feel contrived to writers, not realistic.

What outside readers likely miss is the structural detail posters kept raising: Japanese supermarkets generally require at least one full-time employee (shain) on-site to open the store and handle keys/registers, meaning part-timers are structurally barred from the kind of unsupervised authority the manga grants its heroine — which is exactly why the manager’s absence in the story struck posters as implausible rather than merely unsympathetic.

  • Tokyo Car Debate Flares Up Again: 5ch Says ‘Factor in Parking and Taxis Are Cheaper’

The perennial debate over whether you need a car in Tokyo has flared up again on 5ch. Many argue cars are unnecessary, citing steep parking fees and better value from taxis and rental cars, while others — especially those living outside the Yamanote Line loop or raising kids — insist cars are essential. The thread escalated into an argument over an image showing car ownership rates in Suginami Ward.

    1AnonymousAug 22, 2026 13:13
There's no way it's simply "better to have one" or "better not to." Even in Tokyo there are tons of places where the trains are inconvenient with annoying transfers — if anything, the more urban you are, the more you appreciate having a car.
    2AnonymousAug 22, 2026 13:14
Do those two things really add up to "necessary"?
    3AnonymousAug 22, 2026 13:14
Fine if you've got money to spare, but if you're broke you're better off spending it elsewhere.
    4AnonymousAug 22, 2026 13:21
Why bother buying something you can get by without anyway?
    7AnonymousAug 22, 2026 13:22
Once Tesla self-driving gets approved, poor Tokyoites are all going to live in their Teslas instead of paying rent. Calling it now — electricity, bottled water, and public bathhouse fees for a Tesla-dwelling lifestyle would be cheaper than rent and utilities.
    8AnonymousAug 22, 2026 13:26
Looking around at my friends, I don't know a single family living in Tokyo without a car. There's stuff like driving the grandparents to the hospital too.
    11AnonymousAug 22, 2026 13:29
If you ignore the purchase price and upkeep costs, sure, having one is better.
    12AnonymousAug 22, 2026 13:31
There's traffic congestion, so doesn't that mean a lot of people actually own cars after all?
    13AnonymousAug 22, 2026 13:32
Even just factoring in parking fees, calling a taxi when you need one works out cheaper.
    14AnonymousAug 22, 2026 13:33
Unlike the countryside, a lot of places don't even have parking, and where it exists it's expensive. If you're wealthy that doesn't matter, but for ordinary folks, a car isn't necessary.
    24AnonymousAug 22, 2026 13:53
It's more like "nice to have" than "necessary." I own one, but I only drive it about 3 times a month.
    26AnonymousAug 22, 2026 13:58
    Re: #24
If you're not using it for work, of course you're not driving it every day.
    30AnonymousAug 22, 2026 14:09
Outside the Yamanote Line, a lot of areas just have train lines radiating outward, so it's better to have a car. It's only pathetic bottom-feeders whose whole world is the area right around the station who insist cars are totally unnecessary. Big-box stores along the main roads away from the stations blow train-side shops away on both selection and price.
    39AnonymousAug 22, 2026 14:20
People with money to spare own cars at a high rate. Households with kids also have higher ownership rates. The people saying they don't need one are broke, family-less, lonely types.

Please go ahead and keep that prejudice for the rest of your life. I'm not foolish enough to blow money on something I don't need just to keep up appearances.
    48AnonymousAug 22, 2026 14:27
It's not prejudice, it's just how reality is. The truth is you want a car but can't afford to maintain one.
    71AnonymousAug 22, 2026 14:43
Yeah, rich people really do own cars lol. Surprised my own Suginami Ward is this low.

That image is basically the answer. Come on, "necessary" camp, give your take on this.
    107AnonymousAug 22, 2026 14:56
    Re: #103
Like it says in Re: #71, car ownership rates around there are actually low.
    76AnonymousAug 22, 2026 14:46
Having a car is definitely convenient. The people saying they don't need one just can't afford to own one.
    79AnonymousAug 22, 2026 14:48
    Re: #76
Does "gets in the way and costs money to maintain" also count as "convenient"?
    83AnonymousAug 22, 2026 14:48
Poor guy: "Renting a car when you need one beats owning — way better value." Me: "A broke guy who can't even afford to own a car isn't casually renting one either, you idiot."
    94AnonymousAug 22, 2026 14:52
    Re: #83
Factor in the purchase price and upkeep, and rental cars or taxis work out cheaper.
    91AnonymousAug 22, 2026 14:51
Just use whichever is more convenient at the time, car or train. Why are broke people so hostile toward cars anyway?
    100AnonymousAug 22, 2026 14:53
    Re: #91
It's always the "cars are necessary" camp that starts this fight every time.
    103AnonymousAug 22, 2026 14:54
At Toyosu and Kiba where I do my daily shopping — everyone gets 2 hours free, app/credit-card members get several more hours (doubled on weekends), and spending ¥1,000-2,000 gets you another 1-2 hours on top. I never stay for hours on end, so I basically never end up paying for parking.
    109AnonymousAug 22, 2026 14:57
Toyosu's packed with high-rise condos, so parking's probably ridiculously expensive there too.
    121AnonymousAug 22, 2026 15:02
    Re: #109
The high-rises are only in the redeveloped area right by the station — cross one canal and it's regular condos. The LaLaport parking lot (especially underground) is packed with luxury cars though, makes me nervous parking next to one.

"Fine either way" and "absolutely don't need it" — can you tell the difference? lol
    137AnonymousAug 22, 2026 15:13
Is the whole of Tokyo a fancy upscale neighborhood or something? Explain why that's the standard you're using.

    Background and Key Points

For readers unfamiliar with Japan, the key institutional fact behind this whole argument is the “shako shōmei” system — since the 1960s, anyone registering a car in Japan’s major cities must first prove they have a legal parking space for it, which is why off-street parking in central Tokyo is both scarce and expensive (often ¥30,000–50,000, or roughly $200–350, a month in the 23 wards). That single rule underpins nearly every “parking costs more than the car is worth” comment in the thread. The Yamanote Line loop, referenced repeatedly, is the JR line encircling central Tokyo; areas inside and just outside it have dense subway/rail coverage, while wards and satellite cities further out often rely on a handful of radial train lines with long walks or bus transfers to reach them — the geographic split the “you need a car” camp is describing.

The thread doesn’t actually split on whether cars are useful — nobody disputes that — it splits on whether convenience translates into “necessary,” with income implicitly standing in for both sides’ real argument: one camp reads car ownership as a marker of being comfortably well-off, the other reads it as a trap that eats disposable income better spent on trains, taxis, or rentals.

What goes unmentioned is the irony in the Suginami Ward image itself: Suginami is one of Tokyo’s more affluent, family-heavy wards, yet posters cite its low ownership rate as proof that “necessary” is wrong — without noting that affluent central wards simply have the best transit access, so wealth and low car ownership aren’t contradictory there at all.
