  • “I graduated from Kyoto University, lol” — wakatte.tv’s Aka actually dropped out, only has a high school diploma

“Aka,” a panelist on the YouTube debate show “wakatte.tv,” has come under fire after old footage resurfaced of him saying, “I graduated from Kyoto University, lol” — when in fact he never graduated and had dropped out. The show is known for its style of panelists openly roasting each other’s academic backgrounds and work performance, so the irony of the very person who dishes out that mockery having padded his own credentials struck a nerve. On 5channel, opinions split between defenders and critics, and the discussion spread to cover the response of a politician said to have defended the show, as well as a debate over a co-star’s educational background.

He got into Kyoto University to prove his bullies wrong, and now this — what a waste.
    18AnonymousSep 4, 2026 22:55
Okay, so we get that he didn't graduate, but what year did he actually drop out?
    19AnonymousSep 4, 2026 22:56
He's clearly smart enough, so what's wrong with just being a high school grad?
What's there to be embarrassed about?
    20AnonymousSep 4, 2026 22:56
If a Kyoto University degree rates 100 on the envy scale, dropping out of Kyoto University still gets you like a 95.
Just getting accepted is impressive enough on its own.

Background and Key Points of This Story

wakatte.tv is known for its debate format in which panelists openly roast each other’s academic backgrounds and work performance, and “Aka” was often the one dishing out jokes about other panelists’ schools. This time, the controversy centers on the fact that Aka himself — despite usually being the one doing the roasting — had once said, “I graduated from Kyoto University, lol,” even though he never actually graduated and had dropped out instead. On the thread, opinions split between defenders (“just getting in is impressive enough”) and critics (“it’s rich for someone who’s used his academic background to mock others to have exaggerated his own”). The discussion also spread to cover exchanges about co-star Taizo Sugimura’s educational background and the response of a politician said to have defended the show — though claims lacking solid grounding, along with anything amounting to excessive personal attacks on real politicians, have been left out of this piece.

  • September 5th is ‘Propose With a Bulb Day’ — 5ch: ‘My oshi! ❤😎’

September 5th is “Propose with a Bulb Day,” established by Flower Garden Karen, a flower and houseplant shop in Osaka. The date comes from a wordplay on the numbers 9 (“kyu”) and 5 (“kon”), spelling out “kyu-kon” (bulb/proposal). The idea is for men to give women flower bulbs as a way to pop the question. On 5ch’s live-discussion board, a late-night thread kicked off with this trivia, but the conversation quickly drifted away from the anniversary itself and spiraled into unrelated chatter — whether a guy named Daisuke Hori is the real deal, how little sleep comedian Sanma gets, who’s actually been to a wedding, and fan-casting for a One Piece live-action movie.

    1AnonymousSep 5, 2026 00:56
"Established by Flower Garden Karen, an Osaka-based shop in Chuo Ward, Osaka City, that sells flower bulbs and houseplants mainly online.
The date comes from the wordplay 'kyu (9) kon (5)' — read together as 'kyukon,' meaning both 'bulb' and 'proposal.'
Unlike Valentine's Day, where women confess their feelings to men, this day flips the script: it's meant to give men a reason to propose to women, with the hope that they'll gift a flower bulb on this date to set the moment in motion.

    Background and talking points

“Propose with a Bulb Day” is an anniversary established by Flower Garden Karen, a flower and houseplant shop in Osaka’s Chuo Ward, set on September 5th based on the wordplay “kyu (9) kon (5)” for “kyukon” (bulb/proposal). The idea, mirroring Valentine’s Day in reverse, is for men to give women flower bulbs as a prompt to propose — but within the thread, this trivia served only as a jumping-off point, and the actual discussion had little to do with the anniversary itself. On “nandemo jikkyo” (anything-goes live commentary) boards like this one, the founding topic is often just a pretext for starting a thread, with conversation routinely veering off in all directions — and true to form, this one drifted into questions about whether a man named Daisuke Hori is real, rumors about celebrities’ private lives, and fan-casting chatter for a movie adaptation. Readers going in expecting a deep dive on the anniversary itself, based on the headline alone, may be surprised to find the actual thread barely touches on it.

  • 5ch Users Get Hyped Over MBTI Tests, Debate Color-Coded Types and Compatibility

In a thread titled “Tell me your MBTI” posted on the Nandemo Jikkyo G (Anything Goes Live) board, users shared and compared their 16Personalities test results. Results like ENFP, “Commander,” and “Debater” poured in one after another, and the conversation turned to type-based stereotypes: NT types (purple) love arguing online, SJ types (blue) tend to be well-adjusted to society, and SP types (yellow) skew toward being outgoing extroverts. Some pointed out that results can flip easily depending on how you answer, while others checked their compatibility with their partners’ types — revealing a range of opinions on just how much stock to put in MBTI.

Case in point: me, extremely skewed and never changing

    Background and Talking Points

The 16Personalities site used in the thread is a free personality test, but it’s a separate private service from the official MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) developed by psychologists Myers and Briggs, and it’s said to have no connection to The Myers-Briggs Company, the U.S. trademark holder. The thread’s remark “reminder: that’s a fake MBTI test site” appears to reflect this distinction. Likewise, the idea of color-coding the four-letter types — like calling NT types “purple” — comes from the “temperament theory” proposed by psychologist David Keirsey, and isn’t part of the original MBTI framework. Because MBTI sorts personality into a definitive combination of four categories, it tends to make for lively, entertaining discussion, even though psychologists still widely question its reliability and validity. The thread showed both skeptical comments (“it changes easily depending on how you answer,” “can’t believe people still buy into this stuff”) alongside posts genuinely interested in the cognitive-functions theory — suggesting many people enjoy it less for the results themselves than as a way to better understand themselves and others.

Honestly, if you actually want to be a voice actor, Love Live! isn't the right path for it.
The time you should spend building experience as a rookie voice actor ends up tied up in singing and dancing instead.
You're better off being the type who's happy as long as she gets to sing, dance, and do solo work, and doesn't care much about the rest.

    Re: #75
Even so, that's still the elite track compared to the vast majority of voice actors who never get anywhere.

    Background and Discussion Points

Hanamiya Uina debuted as a member of “Love Live! Hasunosora Girls’ School Idol Club,” and alongside the anime’s second season, she has taken on a growing list of outside work, including Bushiroad’s new project and “The Elusive Samurai.” The thread’s comparisons to a “rickety old ship,” a “speedboat,” and a “luxury liner” reflect how posters were rating cast members who’ve landed opportunities outside Hasunosora — and it’s nothing unusual these days for voice actors who debuted through social games to juggle multiple IPs at once. It’s a common misconception that one cast member having a heavier workload says anything about another member’s talent; casting comes down to individual auditions and offers. The Kyomafu talk show itself brings together a mixed cast from Nijigasaki High School Idol Club and Hasunosora, reflecting a broader trend of events that cross over multiple projects within the Love Live! franchise.

  • L’Arc-en-Ciel vs. GLAY: Which Reigned Supreme in Their Heyday? 5ch Weighs In

In the late 1990s, L’Arc-en-Ciel and GLAY were spoken of in the same breath as two of the most nationally beloved rock bands in Japan. A thread on 5ch titled “So which one was actually better, L’Arc-en-Ciel or GLAY?!” reignited the debate, with posters weighing in on peak-era concert attendance, sheer number of hit songs, the “visual-kei vs. mainstream pop” divide, and even the historical feud with talent agency Burning Production. Opinions split hard across more than 40 replies.

    Re: #63
That song's got kind of a corny intro, but the lyrics are so heartbreakingly good it's incredible.

Background and key points of the debate

L’Arc-en-Ciel and GLAY both rose to prominence in the mid-1990s, leading the wave of J-rock bands that defined the era, and have long been discussed as peers of the same generation. GLAY is often cited as the symbol of mass popularity thanks to their two-day open-air concert at Makuhari Seaside Park in 1999, which drew a massive crowd, while L’Arc-en-Ciel, despite its visual-kei roots, has broadened its fanbase across generations since the 2000s through anime theme-song tie-ins. GLAY’s lawsuit against their talent agency, Burning Production, is another historical episode frequently brought up when comparing the two. The thread kept coming back to a “mainstream GLAY” versus “L’Arc-en-Ciel for connoisseurs” framing, but opinions diverged depending on whether the yardstick was sales, concert turnout, or personal taste in songs — and readers should note that posters never actually agreed on what “better” even meant.

  • JoJo’s Final Boss Fights: Were Parts 4 and 6 the Only Ones That Actually Made Sense? 5channers Debate

Final boss battles in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure are often criticized part-by-part for relying on convenient plot developments, but a thread on 5ch’s “Nanidemo Jikkyo G” board sparked a broader debate after someone claimed “only Parts 4 and 6 had a boss fight that actually made sense.” Posters pointed out that Part 1 never truly defeats DIO, Part 2 wins mainly thanks to the power of nature, and Part 3’s sudden ability for a Stand to stop time feels like it comes out of nowhere — while many praised Part 6’s structure, where Emporio, who inherits Pucci’s fate, is the one who finally settles things. The thread also drifted into side debates about how Joseph is rated and how Stand awakening actually works, which kept the replies coming.

    44AnonymousSep 4, 2026 18:26

Climbing the oil-covered pillar wasn't for building physical strength, it was Ripple training. People who can produce a Stand naturally from birth (or via the bow and arrow) don't need that kind of training.

Joseph used Ripple constantly from a young age, so it's said his Stand manifested as a materialization of that Ripple energy. Maybe, actually, someone who knows nothing about Ripple at all is more likely to manifest a powerful Stand shaped by their own tastes, desires, and subconscious?

Someone desperate to win at gambling gets a gambling-specialized Stand, a guy who loves guns gets a gun Stand, and someone who secretly fears the Joestar family as an arch-enemy gets an unbeatable, combat-specialized Stand.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure began serialization in 1987 and is known for swapping out its protagonist and ability system with each new part. Final boss fights in shonen manga are an easy target for criticism over “last-minute convenient plot developments,” and this thread follows that pattern. Opinions were especially split over Parts 3 and 4: some argued Part 3 isn’t really “convenient” since Kakyoin and Avdol work step by step to uncover the enemy’s true identity, while others questioned how Jotaro’s Stand ability to stop time came about in the first place. Kira’s declaration of his own name in Part 4 also drew mixed readings — some called it “a slip caused by overconfidence,” others saw it as “the best outcome of repeated attempts outside the main story.” Note that the explanations of Stand-awakening mechanics discussed here aren’t confirmed by the original work — they’re fan theories and speculation.

According to Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare data, the number of blood donors in their 20s fell from roughly 1.13 million in fiscal 2009 to about 660,000 in fiscal 2024. A Nippon Foundation survey found that fewer than 10% of people in their teens and 20s have ever donated blood. On 5ch’s “Live News (Anything Goes)” board — a general live-commentary board — this figure sparked a thread with over 40 replies debating why young people won’t donate, from the point that being on regular medication disqualifies you, to frustration with a system that leans on unpaid “goodwill,” to calls for paid donations or tax breaks.

A Nippon Foundation survey found that fewer than 10% of people aged 10 to 29 have ever donated blood, even once.
Recent statistics show about 210,000 donors aged 16-19, about 660,000 in their 20s, and about 700,000 in their 30s — the younger the age group, the fewer the donors.

    Re: #108
A tax break for donors sounds reasonable
Though honestly, taxes are too high even without that — they should just scrap the consumption tax

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Japan’s blood supply shifted entirely to unpaid, volunteer donation in 1964, after an incident in which the U.S. ambassador to Japan was stabbed and the poor quality of “purchased blood” used in his transfusion became a public scandal — ever since, “voluntary, unpaid donation” has been national policy. The 1980s also saw the drug-induced HIV scandal, in which unheated blood products imported from overseas spread HIV infections; the exchange in replies #27 and #31 is a reference to that history. Elderly people often fail to meet donation eligibility criteria because of high blood pressure or regular medication, which is part of why the burden of supplying blood falls disproportionately on the working-age population — feeding young people’s sense of being unfairly squeezed. Calls for paid donation remain persistent, but the Japanese Red Cross Society’s blood donation program itself reportedly runs at a loss, which is why some in the thread proposed alternatives like tax breaks instead.

  • Fee-free, delivery-free ‘Rocket Now’ takes aim at Uber Eats — 5ch: ‘They’ll jack up prices once they’ve crushed the competition’

Food delivery app Rocket Now has been ramping up its challenge to Uber Eats by scrapping both delivery fees and service charges while matching in-store prices — and it’s become a hot topic on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G board. The operator is reportedly affiliated with South Korea’s Coupang, and thread posters repeatedly speculated that ‘they’re covering the losses with profits from the Korean parent company, and plan to raise prices once they’ve driven Uber Eats out of the market.’ Some pointed out that Wolt and menu have already pulled out of Japan, while others questioned how sustainable this is given the strain on driver recruitment and the risk of dumping.

    28AnonymousSep 4, 2026 18:17

That ad is way too annoying 😯

Background and key points of the debate

Rocket Now’s operator is reportedly South Korea’s Coupang, the e-commerce giant known for rapid growth built on same-day delivery, which has a track record of running deliberately loss-making, low-price strategies in its delivery operations across multiple countries. Japan’s food delivery market already had Uber Eats and Demae-can, and Wolt and menu also entered — but those two later entrants have since withdrawn, underscoring just how much this is a battle of financial staying power. The thread was split on whether to view this price war as ‘healthy competition’ or as ‘dumping in anticipation of price hikes once the market is cornered,’ with some questioning whether it amounts to unfair below-cost pricing under antitrust law. Practical worries also came up repeatedly — that driver recruitment can’t keep pace and that rural areas simply don’t generate enough orders to retain delivery workers — pointing to service-quality issues that price alone doesn’t capture. Note: a few posts tied this price war to a specific nationality or origin, but since those claims were unsubstantiated generalizations, they have been left out of this article.

On 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G board (NanG), a thread appeared in the well-known “Ojou-sama Club” (Young Lady Club) format. Posters converse in elegant, Meiji- and Taisho-era noblewoman speech (sentences dressed up with flourishes like “…desuwa” and “…desuno”), while the actual content is a nonstop stream of crude material — “I’ve had an accident,” “I’ve soiled myself,” “the cleanup can’t keep pace.” The humor comes entirely from the gap between the refined diction and the filthy subject matter. Replies joke that cleaning isn’t their job but rather the family butler’s (“Jiiya’s”), and some note that this thread format actually originated on “NanJ” before migrating over to “NanG” — a nod to the fact that this is very much an in-joke among the regulars.

    Background and Points of Discussion

On 5ch, there’s a well-established thread format called the “Ojou-sama Club” (Young Lady Club), which gets its laughs from the gap between elegant noblewoman speech and crude content. The style is said to have originated on “NanJ” (Nandemo Jikkyo J) and later took root on “NanG” (Nandemo Jikkyo G), a board descended from NanJ. This very thread touches on that history in reply #56, where a poster notes “this originally comes from NanJ, you know.” It’s easy to mistake this for targeting any specific real person — in fact, it’s simply anonymous-board character roleplay. Likewise, exchanges like “cleaning isn’t our job” or “that’s the butler’s job” are just stock responses that fit the young-lady setup, not genuine commentary on domestic staff. Best read not as a serious discussion but as an in-joke thread the regulars enjoy purely for its stylized humor.

  • Tattoo Bans at Pools, Hot Springs, and Beaches in Japan Spark Mixed Reactions

In Japan, it’s not unusual for people with tattoos to be turned away from pools, hot springs, and public bathhouses, and some beaches also restrict entry depending on the facility. On 5ch, this custom sparked discussion: against the claim that “tattoos are accepted as fashion overseas,” others countered that refusing entry over dress codes is common overseas too, and pointed to the historical background of tattoos once used to identify fishermen or Edo-era firefighters, or as a symbol of yakuza gang membership. Many comments found merit on both sides — those who ban tattoos and those who have them — making this a debate that doesn’t reduce to simple right and wrong.

    Even cops there have tattoos
It's not like they're actually hurting anyone

    Re: #6
Cops aren't as noble a profession as you seem to think
    Especially in America

    Re: #6
Tattoos actually work pretty well as a way to identify a body after death

When in Rome, do as the Romans do

That's just common sense in any country
    8AnonymousSep 4, 2026 13:57
I've never had a bad experience over it, so I don't really care
    9AnonymousSep 4, 2026 13:57
I once saw a scary-looking old guy at the public bath with "monmon" (slang for tattoos) covering his whole back, and it made the whole place so tense I couldn't relax — honestly, please don't come
    10AnonymousSep 4, 2026 13:57
Plenty of places have dress codes
The "tattoos are just fashion" argument doesn't hold up
    20AnonymousSep 4, 2026 14:02
Isn't beach swimming not actually banned?
I've seen groups with full traditional wabori tattoos, let alone regular ones
    22AnonymousSep 4, 2026 14:04
    Re: #20
    Depends on the beach
    30AnonymousSep 4, 2026 14:07
    Re: #22
Then again, plenty of hot springs and bathhouses do allow tattoos
Actually, old-school public baths (not the fancy "spa-sen" type) are basically fine with tattoos by default
    95AnonymousSep 4, 2026 14:57
    Re: #22
Still, beaches don't really have any enforcement power
    They're not private property
    29AnonymousSep 4, 2026 14:07
Historically in Japan, tattoos were basically only for fishermen (so drowned bodies could be identified) or yakuza ink
So to ordinary people, they just come off as intimidating
    33AnonymousSep 4, 2026 14:09
    Re: #29
Also, Edo-era firefighters had tattoos too
Same reason as the fishermen — it made identifying bodies easier
    38AnonymousSep 4, 2026 14:13
    Japan's national swim team

    Bans tattoos under pool rules
    Dyed hair and piercings too
    40AnonymousSep 4, 2026 14:15
    Re: #38
They should really allow dyed hair and piercings though
You can hide hair color under a cap, and just take piercings out while swimming
    42AnonymousSep 4, 2026 14:16
    Re: #40
Not sure about hair dye, but piercings are an infection risk
There's a risk both of catching something and spreading it

If you've got time to worry about fashion, go practice
You're funded by the government, after all
    39AnonymousSep 4, 2026 14:14
Getting a tattoo is your freedom, but recognize other people's freedom to be averse to it too

    This, completely
If you're going to preach freedom, recognize the other side's freedom too
    41AnonymousSep 4, 2026 14:15
Reminder: even overseas, tattoos still get plenty of side-eye
    48AnonymousSep 4, 2026 14:18
    Re: #41
In Hollywood movies tattoos are basically used as an easy visual shorthand for "this guy's a villain"
    50AnonymousSep 4, 2026 14:21
For a publicly-funded facility to refuse tattoos is honestly going too far
By that same logic, beaches banning them doesn't make sense either
    52AnonymousSep 4, 2026 14:22
    Re: #50
It's weird to get a tattoo knowing full well some places will turn you away, and still want to go there anyway
    53AnonymousSep 4, 2026 14:23
    Re: #50
Oh, a rare constructive opinion for a tattoo thread

"If it's publicly funded it has to accept absolutely everything" is a weird take too
    65AnonymousSep 4, 2026 14:27
It's fine for the military or jobs with a risk of getting lost/stranded (as an ID method)
Even then, plenty of places still ban them out of concern it undermines discipline
    68AnonymousSep 4, 2026 14:32
    Re: #65
Even in the military, guys with obvious tattoos get mocked as meatheads
    90AnonymousSep 4, 2026 14:52
Yakuza guy: "I want people to fear me and not look down on me, but I also wanna go to the hot springs… I know! I'll cut off my pinky!"

    Apparently that actually happens

Cutting off a finger is an act of apology for screwing up — meaning it marks you as someone whose screw-up was too big for just bowing your head, you know?
    100AnonymousSep 4, 2026 14:58
Getting a tattoo knowing all this and then complaining about it afterward is incredibly uncool and lame
    109AnonymousSep 4, 2026 15:06
    Re: #100
For example, it was only in 2014 that a beach in Zushi started banning tattoos and it became big news — that's a pretty recent development
Plenty of people got their tattoos long before that
This whole "don't complain after the fact" argument is just rubber-stamping the status quo, and it doesn't even seem to understand the history — makes no sense
    102AnonymousSep 4, 2026 15:00
I went to a famous day-trip hot spring in Hakone
and was shocked tattoos were allowed
There were more tattooed guys than regular customers
Felt like I went there to see ink, not the scenery
    106AnonymousSep 4, 2026 15:04
    Re: #102
And then Japanese customers stop coming
and at some point foreign tourists stop coming too, so the place is in trouble, it makes the news, and there's a nationwide "let's help them out" mood — and then their whole tattoo-friendly-hot-spring era gets exposed and it's "serves you right! go under, idiot!"? Is that how this plays out?
    110AnonymousSep 4, 2026 15:07
    Re: #106
Actually there were plenty of foreigners, but
there were also plenty of guys who looked like your typical crude Japanese construction-worker type
Well, that said, it's not like they were super intimidating or anything, but it still wasn't a great atmosphere
so I figure regular customers will end up drifting away
    112AnonymousSep 4, 2026 15:07
    Re: #106
That's basically the same thing Kyoto City has been saying
"Inbound tourism is great!" → "No one's here because of COVID, Japanese people please come" → "COVID's over, inbound tourism is great again!"

Background and key points of this topic

The custom in Japan of turning away tattooed people from pools, hot springs, and public bathhouses has its roots in the historical conflation of tattoos once used by fishermen and Edo-era firefighters for identification with the body art associated with yakuza gangs. One of the events that made “tattoo bans” at beaches widely known was in 2014, when a beach in Zushi, Kanagawa Prefecture, made news for restricting entry to tattooed visitors and formalizing the rule — commenters note this is a relatively recent development. On the other hand, it’s often overlooked that beaches themselves are usually not private property and largely lack any real enforcement power, and that many old-fashioned public bathhouses still don’t make an issue of tattoos today. In the thread, the very premise that “tattoos are tolerated as fashion overseas” was pushed back on, with counterexamples such as dress-code-based entry refusals happening overseas too, and the fact that even in the military, visible tattoos aren’t looked upon favorably — revealing that this can’t be reduced to a simple Japan-versus-the-West divide. Concerns were also raised that lifting tattoo bans at hot springs in tourist areas could drive away local customers, adding a more practical point about balancing inbound tourism demand with consideration for existing regulars.
