  • Palm-Sized Dinosaur Quiz Gets 5ch’s VIP Board Buzzing — ‘That’s What the Manual Said!’

A thread popped up on 5ch’s VIP board with a photo of a palm-sized dinosaur figure and the question, ‘Can you guess what kind of dinosaur this is?’ The poster played a character voiced through the text emoticon ‘(っ´ω`c)’, kicking off a naming quiz where other posters threw out guesses like ‘Allosaurus’ and ‘some kind of Honehone Zaurus figure.’ The correct answer was ‘Fukuisaurus,’ and whoever got it right was even promised a handshake. From there, the thread drifted into casual chatter, with another poster showing up to do some palm reading.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

On 5ch’s VIP board, threads where posters role-play as a text-emoticon (AA) character like ‘(っ´ω`c)’ — narrating events and chatting in the first person — are a classic genre; the appeal lies less in the content than in the snappy back-and-forth between posters. The answer to this quiz, ‘Fukuisaurus,’ is the genus name of a real dinosaur whose fossils were discovered and named in Fukui Prefecture, one of the names that symbolizes Japan’s dinosaur research. ‘Allosaurus,’ one of the guesses, is a different genus from North America, treated here as a wrong answer that just happens to sound similar. Once the quiz wound down, the talk drifted loosely into unrelated chatter — a promised handshake, a bit of palm reading — which is typical of the pacing in these AA-character threads. Note that the thread also included some exchanges poking fun at crude jokes and sexual orientation, which have been left out of this article.

  • Risa Ogata Suddenly Starts Hearting Fan Comments — A Desperate Bid to Stop an Exodus?

Former idol Risa Ogata has been going through her YouTube comments hitting the heart button one after another, sparking discussion on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. Fans reacted with confusion — “It’s been two years of radio silence, why suddenly now?” — while others voiced worry over ticket sales for her upcoming shows: September 20 at Ebisu Garden Hall in Tokyo and November 3 at Gorilla Hall in Osaka. Having left her agency to pursue an independent artist career, the episode highlights just how hard it is for her to hold onto her fanbase.

    Background and Key Points

Risa Ogata left the Hello! Project-affiliated group she once belonged to and now works independently as an artist without an agency. Unlike an agency-backed idol, going independent means she has to handle ticket sales and turnout herself, and this show is scheduled for Ebisu Garden Hall and Gorilla Hall Osaka. In the thread, some pointed out that the latter venue was previously used by another group for a standing-room show, raising concerns about turnout for a seated performance. It’s worth noting that whether the “likes” on her comments are really a countermeasure against fans drifting away has not been explained by Ogata herself — this remains pure speculation among fans.

  • Juice=Juice’s Reiruru Wins Over Social Media at Hamada Music Festival — But Fans Split Over Her Singing

Reiruru, the unit within Hello!Project’s Juice=Juice made up of Dambara Ruru and Inoue Rein, appeared on the music special “Hamada Music Festival” and won favorable reactions across social media, including TikTok. On the other hand, harsher comments reportedly turned up in the TV broadcast’s live viewer comments, and this split in reception became a hot topic on the Hello!Pro board of 5ch as well. In the thread, negative opinions like “she’s just a pretty face” and “her singing is bad” mixed with favorable takes like “their high notes complement each other well” and “this is just reality,” while posts comparing the vocal ability of other members besides Dambara and Inoue also piled up.

It's not really about whether Dambara and Inoue are good or bad — it's that the idol industry is so far gone (thanks to =LOVE, Kawara Lab, and the Sakamichi groups) that they end up looking like good singers by comparison

It's seriously turning into something else
"Body&Soul" got split between two of them and ended up like this

    Background and Points of Discussion

The word “acme,” which came up repeatedly in the thread, is slang used among Hello!Project fans, often used mockingly to describe a singing style built on forcing out high notes with sheer breath power. The split in how people rated Dambara and Inoue largely comes down to a difference in taste over how that style lands on the ear. Another point of debate was the gap between the harsh reactions in the TV’s live comments and the warmer reception on social media like TikTok. Live-broadcast comments tend to be swayed by split-second impressions, and it’s common for perception to shift once clipped highlight videos start circulating afterward. This gap in temperature is also thought to reflect a difference between longtime fans and new viewers in how they interpret the word “acme” itself. It’s also worth noting that “Reiruru” is not a name for Juice=Juice as a whole, but the name of a unit formed by just two members, Dambara Ruru and Inoue Rein — a point that’s easy to misread, and it’s precisely because the unit’s makeup is so simple that the thread’s discussion expanded into comparing the singing ability of individual members.

  • Beef or Pork in Curry? Kansai vs. Kanto Clash Online — “Why Settle for Pork? That’s the Real Mystery”

A thread titled “Kansai people use beef in curry,” posted on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G (Anything Goes Live) board, sparked a wider debate over whether curry should be made with beef or pork. Team Beef argued that “beef is obviously tastier, so why settle for pork? It’s a mystery,” while Team Pork fired back with practical points like “curry roux brands such as Vermont Curry and Java Curry are seasoned assuming you’re using pork.” The thread veered into tales of beef-tendon curry curdling into a jelly-like mess, and even a detour into cultures that eat water buffalo instead of cow — turning into a wide-ranging chat that went well beyond a simple East-vs-West rivalry.

    Re: #96
It's just personal preference, that's all

    Background and Key Points

The “beef or pork in curry” divide is a classic topic that often comes up when discussing food culture differences between western and eastern Japan, with a long-standing pattern noted across dishes like nikujaga (meat and potato stew) and gyudon (beef bowl) of “beef in the west, pork in the east.” Even within the thread, one comment noted “there are beef days, and there are pork and chicken days too” (Reply 5), suggesting the split really comes down to individual households and personal taste rather than a strict regional rule. This particular debate mainly split over “why people choose pork,” with some citing cost (Reply 72) and others chalking it up to plain preference (Reply 97). What readers should be careful not to misread is that claims in threads like this aren’t based on any survey or statistics — they’re just a pile of individual anecdotes — so it would be premature to take “Kansai = beef, Kanto = pork” as a strict, clean-cut rule.

  • Private Pharmacy Schools: ‘Tuition’s Sky-High and Your Odds of Becoming a Pharmacist Are Low’ — So Why Do So Many Students Still Apply?

A thread on 5ch turned into a discussion of why private pharmacy schools keep filling their enrollment quotas despite high tuition and low national licensing exam pass rates. Data cited in the thread put private universities’ pharmacist national exam pass rate at 67.4%, lower than national universities’ 79.4% and public universities’ 82.9%, and noted that since the shift to a 6-year curriculum, total tuition at some schools now tops 10 million yen. Posters shared anecdotes claiming schools deliberately tighten graduation requirements to avoid producing students who keep failing the national exam, along with discussion of how entrance-exam difficulty has shifted over the years, with opinions split on whether the tuition is actually worth the qualification.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Pharmacy programs in Japan switched to a 6-year curriculum starting in the 2006 academic year, after which new pharmacy schools opened one after another nationwide, causing enrollment quotas to balloon and entrance-exam difficulty to drop. One reason cited for private universities’ lower national exam pass rates compared to national and public schools is that some private universities reportedly tighten grade-advancement and graduation requirements to filter out weaker students before they can sit the national exam — a ‘pass-rate management’ practice that overlaps with issues previously covered in the press. Total tuition varies widely by school, and since the shift to a 6-year program some schools now charge over 10 million yen. That said, the anecdotes shared in the thread describe specific universities’ internal circumstances secondhand, so the timing and details may not reflect the current reality.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyo G) thread “Private Pharmacy Schools: ‘Low academic caliber. Low odds of becoming a pharmacist. High tuition.’ ← So Many Reasons Why.”

  • Luffy Gets Crushed Flat by a Hammer, Charges the Final Boss Mid-Grimace

On 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G (“Anything Goes Live”) board, a single panel from the latest chapter of “One Piece” became a hot topic. A giant swings a hammer down, Luffy jumps in the way, and as he’s getting crushed flat — pulling an absurd face the whole time — he just keeps charging straight at the final boss. Confusion set in first, since the panel alone barely conveys what’s actually happening. From there the discussion snowballed into a debate over the artwork itself: some compared the rough, panel-skipping style to “Higanjima,” others got nostalgic for the careful, single-illustration artwork of early One Piece, and still others praised the new style for its brisk pacing.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Since 2023, when Eiichiro Oda introduced Luffy’s new form “Nika” in “One Piece,” the artwork for battle scenes has leaned heavily into Tom-and-Jerry-style exaggerated, panel-skipping “toon force” expression. “Higanjima,” which the thread brought up for comparison, is a separate manga known for boldly cutting explanatory panels in favor of raw visual impact — pairing the two is actually a go-to comparison that shows up regularly in 5ch manga threads. The dispute splits over whether to read this shift in art style as “the inevitable evolution of expression that comes with going Nika” or as “a decline where the art gets rougher for the sake of pacing.” Many posts line up early-volume artwork against the newest chapter not out of simple nostalgia, but because the debate itself is really about how a character’s role and art style shift over the course of a decades-long serialization — context that’s easy to miss from the replies alone.

A thread has popped up on 5ch’s Love Live! board over “Sports Day,” a fan event being held by “Liella!,” the new group from the Love Live! School Idol Project franchise. The event centers on competitions like a cosplay relay race, a “Love-ka” memory-matching card game, and tug-of-war, and complaints arose over the lack of any live performance segment. What’s more, with the event just a day away, not a single show had sold out — to the point where day-of tickets are even being made available. 41AnonymousSep 4, 2026 20:18
For starters, the "upgrade" seats this time are only about 900 per team.
    900 × 3 = 2,700
The rest comes down to how many regular fixed seats they can fill, but I doubt this event breaks 5,000 people per show.

Wouldn't be shocked if they lose out in attendance to the "Ikizu Live" 2-day show at Musashino Forest (a snarky nickname some fans use for a rival Love Live! sub-unit's live shows).

Threw together a rough attendance estimate.
    [Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium capacity]
    Arena: 4,000; 2nd/3rd floor stands: 5,000; max total 9,000.
    [Sports Day attendance forecast]
    Arena: 10 rows × 30 seats × 3 teams = 1,000
Going by what I'm seeing on X, the stands look 60-80% full, so 3,000-4,000
    Combined, I'd guess 4,000-5,000?
I also went to the Shinymas (Shiny Colors) sports festival, and I think this one's turnout is about the same ballpark.

Seriously, who out there is even asking for a Sports Day?
If you're school idols, just do a stage show.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Sports Day appears to be a fan-meeting-style event planned separately from any live concert, centered on participatory competitions like cosplay and games meant to let fans interact with the cast. The venue is split between limited-capacity “upgrade” (アプグレ) seats and general fixed seating, and posts estimating turnout based on that seating breakdown stood out in the thread. It’s not unusual in itself for tickets to a non-concert event to fail to sell out right away, but some pointed out that a song released the same day had been outpaced by other groups on the charts, and this was taken by some as a reflection of Liella!’s current standing in popularity. On the other hand, since Sports Day was conceived as a fan-interaction event rather than a concert, some in the thread cautioned that it would be hasty to immediately equate empty seats with declining popularity.

YouTuber Komeo served 500 bowls of “Death Crab Ramen” from a food stall, and 160 cases of food poisoning were reported, sparking a thread on 5ch. In addition to salmonella, the bacteria detected reportedly included Plesiomonas, typically associated with freshwater organisms, and photos circulated showing cardboard boxes stored inside the kitchen. The thread split between commenters slamming the sloppy hygiene management and those defending the stunt itself.

Boxes that held frozen goods get wet and breed bacteria there, and bacteria breed in the holes of the cardboard itself anyway.
So when stuff arrives boxed, most places immediately move it into the freezer and fold up and toss the box.
There are probably plenty of shops that keep them around just because they've got nowhere else to put them, though.

On paper, the basic format is just "this kind of shop will sell this kind of item, here are the details."
In this case there was apparently some rule about heat treatment, but I think he got around it by saying the heating is done in-store and then it's chilled before being sold.

Honestly it all comes down to paperwork in the end, so that part's pretty easy to clear.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Operating a food business in Japan requires a permit under the Food Sanitation Act and the appointment of a food hygiene supervisor, but meeting the paperwork requirements doesn’t guarantee that on-site hygiene practices actually measure up. In this case, critics pointed to the unheated, chilled preparation method and cardboard boxes left inside the kitchen, suggesting that holding a business permit is a separate issue from the actual hygiene standard in practice. On the thread, arguments defending the stunt with the view that “society has become intolerant of taking risks” ran alongside criticism that the scale of harm shouldn’t be downplayed — worth noting is that the discussion proceeded without clearly separating whether the stunt itself was appropriate from the separate issue of poor hygiene management.

The poster is a 29-year-old unemployed man, the youngest of six siblings. His 70-year-old father, whose dementia had been progressing, was hospitalized with aspiration pneumonia. When the news that he was in critical condition arrived over LINE, the poster was asleep and missed it — his father passed away before he ever saw the message. Still unable to process it, he posted photos of drinks and snacks while asking thread regulars for advice ahead of the wake the next day: could a Uniqlo suit stand in for mourning clothes? Where should he buy condolence-money envelopes and prayer beads? What’s the difference between a family funeral and a general funeral? Other posters also discussed inheritance procedures and voiced concern about the toll losing a longtime spouse can take on a surviving parent’s mind and body, while opinions split over the poster’s detached, matter-of-fact attitude.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Aspiration pneumonia is a common cause of death among the elderly; as swallowing ability declines, and dementia makes patients more resistant to being fed or assisted with meals, the risk of aspiration rises further. The thread’s observation that “choosing a family funeral actually means visitors trickle in separately, which drags out the return-gift arrangements for condolence money” points to a practical burden — smaller in scale than a general funeral but more spread out over time — that only someone who’s been through it would think to mention. On inheritance, as one poster corrected another, many people mistakenly assume a surviving spouse inherits everything, when in fact children count as legal heirs too. Reactions to the poster’s detached, matter-of-fact attitude split between those who found it disrespectful and those who felt everyone processes a family member’s death differently — no consensus was reached either way.

  • New Home, 7 Months In: ‘Top-Tier Features’ Claim Splits 5ch — ‘Once Things Break, the Money Flies Out’

A thread starter who built a new single-family home seven months ago touted its comfort by listing specific features: a dishwasher, whole-house air conditioning, a parcel delivery box, Ecocarat tile walls, a smart-key entrance, and an app-connected fridge and microwave oven. This drew pushback — comments like ‘rentals are comfortable too’ and ‘used homes are good enough’ — along with the observation that ‘the difference shows up around the 20-year mark,’ splitting the thread between those who valued new-build comfort and those focused on future repair costs. The thread starter also revealed that the home is actually a rental apartment building built as an investment, with the top floor set up as a penthouse where they live.

    1AnonymousSep 4, 2026 22:48
    Seriously comfortable.
    3AnonymousSep 4, 2026 22:48

For example, the kitchen is the latest Graphtect (LIXIL kitchen line) model.
The range hood buttons are touch-panel style,
the toilet has an auto-cleaning function, and the hallway has sensor lights.

    Re: #17
Also, a somewhat unusual one is the built-in hair dryer niche —
having it as wall storage keeps things looking clean.
The washbasin is Aica's Smart Sanitary, which looks stylish.
The fridge is a Vegeta (Toshiba) and the microwave oven is an Ishigama Dome (Hitachi) — both connect to an app, which is convenient.
    23AnonymousSep 4, 2026 23:00
    Re: #17
Also, the entryway hall and the wall behind the living room TV use LIXIL's Ecocarat tiles (moisture-absorbing decorative panels).
They absorb humidity and look good, so I really like them.
The robot vacuum is an Anker Eufy e25 —
it even does wet mopping, it's great.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The “standardization” of housing equipment has been advancing year by year, and features like parcel delivery boxes, bathroom dryers, and highly insulated building materials are no longer unusual in new homes today. On the other hand, homes built 20 years ago were constructed to the standards of an era when insulation grade 2–3 was the norm, making a direct performance comparison difficult. It’s also worth noting that the thread starter is in an unusual position — having built a rental apartment building as an investment and living on the top floor as a penthouse — which differs from a typical single-family home purchase. Alongside envious comments in the thread, there were also concerns that “repair costs could pile up a few years down the line” and counterarguments that “rentals are plenty comfortable too,” so opinions on new-build features were far from unanimous. The fact that specific fixtures like Ecocarat tiles and sensor lights were named in detail also makes it useful as a firsthand account.
