  • Kazushige Nagashima and Yoshizumi Ishihara Shows Collide in Primetime — Ratings ‘Triple Crown’ Battle Behind It

On the evening of September 8, during the 7pm hour, Nippon TV and TV Asahi each aired shows featuring Kazushige Nagashima (60) and Yoshizumi Ishihara (64) in the very same time slot. Reactions on 5ch’s Geinou/Sports Breaking News+ board were split, ranging from “nothing but nepo-baby talents” to “nothing wrong with going head-to-head.”

The article’s headline cited comments like “no wonder young people are giving up on broadcast TV,” but many in the thread argued the causality runs the other way — networks cater to older viewers precisely because younger viewers tuned out first. Behind it all is the networks’ ongoing battle for the ratings “Triple Crown.”

“No wonder young people are giving up on broadcast TV” — Kazushige Nagashima and Yoshizumi Ishihara’s shows clash in primetime… ratings “Triple Crown” race also a factor

Starting at 7pm on the 8th, Nippon TV aired “Kazushige x Kamaitachi: Genba 2-Hour Special,” hosted by Nagashima and comedy duo Kamaitachi.

    No wonder people hate comedians
Nepo-baby talents, and from the same generation to boot?

No, it's the other way around — even when they hand shows to younger talent, young people don't watch, so it ended up like this.

Besides, the youngest guy in primetime is what, Ninomiya, who's over 40? lol
    27AnonymousSep 9, 2026 18:35

    Re: #78
    Oh, media criticism, huh
Just trying out what everyone else is already doing lol

Background and Key Points of This Story

Behind this lies the commercial networks’ ongoing battle for the ratings “Triple Crown” (household ratings, individual ratings, and Golden Prime-time ratings). Second-generation celebrities are easy to cast because they come with built-in name recognition and a loyal following. In this case, Kazushige Nagashima’s and Yoshizumi Ishihara’s signature shows simply happened to overlap in the same 7pm slot on the 8th. Despite their different public personas — a former pro baseball player versus a former weather forecaster — both share the trait of being children of famous parents.

The thread was divided over the order of causality: whether broadcast TV skews toward older viewers because young people left first, or whether the older-skewing lineup is what drove young people away. Both positions had a fair number of supporters. One easy misreading is to assume this scheduling overlap proves network mismanagement or that the talents are unpopular — in reality, some pointed out that the casting also reflects the talent agencies’ bargaining power and past ratings success, meaning a simple generational narrative doesn’t fully explain it.

  • Actor Jiro Sato casually reveals his height on X, sparking surprise: “I didn’t know he was that tall”

On the 9th, actor Jiro Sato (57) revealed on his own X account that he’s “181 cm tall” while sharing an exchange with his wife. In the episode, his wife climbed onto a stool and ended up level with him, exclaiming in surprise, “You’re so tall, so tall!” But readers reacted to the height figure itself. On the 5channel entertainment/sports news board, threads split between people surprised (“I didn’t know he was that tall”) and people saying “no, he always seemed big to me,” with opinions divided over how big a gap there is between his perceived build and his actual height of 181 cm.

    9/9 (Wed) 16:29

Actor Jiro Sato (57) updated his own X account on the 9th. He revealed his height, and the reaction has been one of surprise.

Sato posted about everyday life with his wife: “My wife is 147 cm tall, but when she climbed onto some kind of stool to reach something up high, she happened to end up about the same height as me (181 cm). Looking down, she said, ‘Whoa, that’s high, so high! You must be afraid of heights, huh? That must be rough.’ But something about that logic feels a bit off to me.”

    76AnonymousSep 9, 2026 17:43
So Jiro Sato was already 181cm back in high school

Background and key points of this discussion

The impression of someone’s height tends to be shaped more by the balance of their facial features and build than by the actual number. Because of his solid build and somewhat baby-faced looks, Jiro Sato tends to be seen as “short” or “stocky,” but at 181 cm he’s clearly on the tall side among Japanese men. Even in the thread, opinions split between the camp saying “you see plenty of 181 cm salarymen around” and the camp saying “that height stands a head above everyone on the train,” which shows that what counts as “tall” has less to do with the actual number than with the viewer’s own environment (city vs. countryside, the age range of the people around them, etc.). Also, as the exchange about a single photo with a co-star changing the impression of a height difference shows, comparing celebrities’ heights is easily thrown off by camera angle, shoes, and framing, so it’s not unusual for the officially stated number to diverge from the “visual impression.”

  • Report on Tomomi Itano’s ‘After-Hours Filming’: Lawyer Kito Says It Also Exposed the Ritz-Carlton’s Own Lack of Common Sense

A family trip video posted by former AKB48 member Tomomi Itano has drawn criticism on social media as an “invasion of privacy” and “akin to voyeuristic filming,” over a scene showing her drying her eldest daughter’s hair in the changing room of the large communal bath at the Ritz-Carlton Nikko in Tochigi. On the 9th, lawyer Masaki Kito addressed the matter on his blog, pointing out the possibility that while the hotel had permitted use of the facility outside business hours, it may not have given permission for filming. On 5channel, the discussion split between those questioning Itano’s lack of consideration and those criticizing the hotel for allowing after-hours use while leaving the question of filming permission ambiguous.

    Tue, Sep 9, 15:55

Lawyer Masaki Kito posted an update on the 9th, addressing the online backlash over a video uploaded by former AKB48 member Tomomi Itano.

Itano posted a family trip video to YouTube showing her stay at the luxury Ritz-Carlton Nikko hotel (Tochigi Prefecture), but a scene in which she used a hair dryer on her eldest daughter’s hair in the communal bath’s changing room sparked a wave of criticism on social media over alleged privacy violations and voyeuristic-style filming.

    Re: #49
The hotel was just being considerate so she, as a celebrity, wouldn't be seen naked by other guests — and she went and turned it into a video, flexing about the special treatment. That's the issue, right?
    61AnonymousSep 9, 2026 16:43
    Re: #49
In that case, if the hotel is giving special treatment by letting someone have exclusive use, they'd naturally ask what it's for
"Just figure out it's for filming" doesn't fly simply because someone books it out during off-hours
If that logic worked, it'd mean the hotel hands any big-spending guest a free pass for exclusive facility use without ever asking the purpose
    71AnonymousSep 9, 2026 17:00
    Either way
a hotel that allows voyeuristic-style filming and streaming in a place like this, of all places, is too risky to ever use
    75AnonymousSep 9, 2026 17:07
    Re: #71
You were never going to go there in your whole life anyway

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This controversy unfolds against the backdrop of Japan’s stealth-marketing regulations under the Act against Unjustified Premiums and Misleading Representations, which took effect in October 2023. When an influencer makes a video after receiving some benefit from a hotel or similar business, a “PR” (sponsored content) label is increasingly required regardless of whether money changed hands — several posts in the thread pointed this out. The debate largely split into two camps. One questioned Itano’s own conduct, raising concerns about using a communal bath — a space with a strong public character — as a filming location even if it was after hours, and about the lack of fairness toward other guests. The other camp criticized the hotel’s response, pointing out a contradiction in lawyer Kito’s explanation that the hotel permitted after-hours use but not filming. There were also posts online claiming a third party “witnessed the filming take place,” but this has not been verified and is treated here as unconfirmed information. A post (No. 73) containing baseless accusations against Itano and associates, including claims linking her to a special fraud group, has been excluded as unverifiable defamation.

According to Takasu, the show’s special broadcast drew a disappointing 8% rating, and Matsumoto Hitoshi reportedly voiced his discouragement at the time. The story also touched on how the show was abruptly cut short after a scheduled broadcast got bumped for extended professional baseball coverage. The thread mixed reactions to that sudden ending back then with divided opinions on individual sketches like “Lizard Old Man,” and debate over how much the ratings slump connected to the later struggles of Matsumoto’s subsequent sketch shows (MHK and Zassaa).

Broadcast writer Takasu Mitsuhiro and comedian/writer Kimura Yuichi appeared on the late-night radio program ‘Takasu Mitsuhiro’s Fantasy Media’ (TOKYO FM) on the 6th, sharing behind-the-scenes stories about ‘Downtown no Gotsu Ee Kanji’ (Fuji TV).

‘Downtown no Gotsu Ee Kanji,’ which aired from 1991 to 1997, was a legendary sketch comedy show starring Downtown’s Matsumoto Hitoshi and Hamada Masatoshi.

Matsumoto later revealed that a scheduled broadcast of the show was abruptly cancelled after being bumped for extended professional baseball coverage.

They're heroes to the crowd that cracks up watching someone eat and shout "Delicious~"

Background and Key Points of Debate

‘Gotsu Ee Kanji’ aired from 1991 to 1997, and Matsumoto Hitoshi himself later revealed that a scheduled special was abruptly cancelled after being bumped for extended professional baseball coverage. Takasu Mitsuhiro’s latest account adds that behind that cancellation lay an 8% rating and some discouraged comments from Matsumoto. The thread was split on how to judge the sketches themselves — some saw experimental bits like “Lizard Old Man” as a sign the show had “lost its way,” while others said they found them funny on rewatching years later. There was also disagreement over how directly the ratings slump connected to the later struggles of Matsumoto’s sketch projects like MHK and Zassaa, with some posts even mixing up the chronology (which came first, MHK or Zassaa), showing how memory-based claims can conflict. The gap between the show’s reputation for high ratings at the time and its actual struggles in the numbers is easier to understand once you factor in its separate, enduring popularity on video and DVD.

  • Tomomi Itano Changing-Room Filming Row: Hotel Adds “It Happened Outside Bathing Hours” Explanation

On September 3, a video posted by Tomomi Itano to her own YouTube channel raised questions about whether she had permission to film in the changing room of the large communal bath at The Ritz-Carlton Nikko in Tochigi Prefecture. The hotel had initially been confirming the facts, but in an additional response it revealed that “the filming in question took place outside the large bath’s operating hours.” With operating hours set from 5:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., the main points of contention on the thread became whether this time frame lines up with when Itano’s child would have been bathing, and the discrepancy with social media posts claiming to have “seen Itano filming.”

    2026/9/8

The “changing-room filming controversy” involving Tomomi Itano took a major turn after The Ritz-Carlton Nikko flatly denied ever giving filming permission. It all began with a single video she uploaded to her YouTube channel on September 3.

    Re: #162
So probably Itano and her daughter were already bathing, and the changing-room filming started right at 11 p.m.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Behind this controversy is the common rule at lodging facilities banning filming and social media posts in large communal baths and changing rooms. This hotel, too, had officially stated the same prohibition, and suspicion initially fell on Itano’s side for not checking the rules. The focus has now shifted to the credibility of the hotel’s later explanation that “the filming took place outside operating hours.” Since operating hours run from 5:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., this would mean she bathed and filmed her child sometime between late night and early morning — some see the behavior as unnatural, while others argue a hotel backed by a publicly listed parent company would be unlikely to risk a false statement, leaving opinion divided. Meanwhile, the social media posts claiming to have “seen Itano filming” have not been verified by Itano herself, so the truth remains unclear.

  • Short sleeper Daisuke Hori’s 7-day livestream rules draw skepticism — 5ch: “So many restrictions, like he’s about to do something special”

Daisuke Hori, a self-proclaimed “short sleeper” who says he only sleeps 30 minutes a day, has announced a continuous 24-hour livestream running for 7 days starting September 10. However, the rules he published were lined with exceptions: the stream ends immediately if a clip surfaces, he won’t wear a sleep-detecting “smart ring,” and there will be several hours of stream downtime during “training sessions.” On 5ch’s “Nanimo Jikkyo G” board, opinions split over whether all these exceptions actually undermine the point of proving he doesn’t sleep, and the thread spiraled into alternative proposals covering everything from how he should bathe to how he should be monitored.

・The stream ends immediately if a clip surfaces
・I won't wear a smart ring — wearing one wouldn't reflect my normal daily life, since I don't normally wear one
・There are daily training sessions with clients, and since I can't reveal the methods behind the sleep-improvement program, there will be a few hours of stream downtime

lol, every single rule here is just cover for whenever he actually falls asleep.

Background and Key Points of Debate

Short sleepers — people who function on unusually little sleep — are medically confirmed in only a very small number of cases, and self-proclaimed short sleepers who turn the claim into a livestream stunt have repeatedly drawn criticism as “controversy marketing.” This time, the discussion centered on the fact that the rules Daisuke Hori published for his 7-day, 24-hour livestream included several exceptions that weaken any actual verification. On the thread, many pointed out that his reason for not wearing the heart-rate- and sleep-tracking “smart ring” — that he doesn’t normally wear one — doesn’t really prove anything. The rule ending the stream the moment a clip surfaces, along with stream downtime during “training sessions,” was also seen as a convenient way to pause the broadcast whenever needed. That said, extreme no-sleep endurance streams aren’t unprecedented — one past example ran over 230 hours (see post 38). Rather than focusing on whether Hori truly sleeps only 30 minutes a day, the thread’s real debate was over whether these rules could prove anything at all.

  • Komeo, Who Apologized for Food Poisoning, Caught Reusing Spoons at ‘Kani wo’ Too — 5ch: ‘Good Thing Nobody Died’

A mass outbreak of food poisoning struck at the Azabu-juban Summer Festival on August 22–23, traced to chilled crab ramen served by “Kappo Komeo.” A Minato Ward investigation found 78 male and female patients and confirmed Salmonella as the cause. The restaurant was hit with a business suspension from September 3 to 9, and on September 5 owner Komeo shaved his head on YouTube to apologize. But then it emerged that Komeo’s other ramen restaurant, “Kani wo,” also had hygiene problems — a September 7 video from Biwako-kun, a YouTuber with 830,000 subscribers, showed a topping spoon being reused, and 5ch erupted with criticism of the restaurant’s management.

The mass food poisoning outbreak stemmed from the “chilled crab ramen” served at a food stall by “Kappo Komeo” during the Azabu-juban Summer Festival on August 22–23. According to a Minato Ward investigation, there were 78 male and female patients. It was confirmed as Salmonella food poisoning caused by the chilled crab ramen, and Kappo Komeo received a seven-day business suspension order (September 3–9) from Minato Ward.

In response to the uproar, Komeo updated his YouTube channel on September 5. He appeared with his head shaved to apologize for the food poisoning incident — but now criticism is mounting over the hygiene management at “Kani wo,” the ramen restaurant where Komeo serves as owner.

The scrutiny of “Kani wo”‘s hygiene management was sparked by a video posted on September 7 by the popular YouTuber “Biwako-kun,” who has 830,000 subscribers. Posting under the title “A Food Poisoning Incident Happened! Going to Eat Komeo’s Crab Ramen,” Biwako-kun said, “There’s a chance I won’t be able to eat here anymore,” and went to check out “Kani wo” right after the scandal broke.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Salmonella food poisoning is typically caused by undercooked ingredients or secondary contamination via utensils or hands. The “reused spoon” that became a hot topic on the thread is one example of this kind of secondary contamination. The point of debate was how far this kind of lax hygiene management actually translates into real harm, splitting posters between skepticism (“can something this minor really cause food poisoning?”) and pushback (“it absolutely can”). Restaurants are legally required to appoint a food hygiene manager, but who actually held that responsibility here remains speculation on the thread and was not confirmed in the article itself. Some argued that, compared to buffet-style dining, people were “overreacting” — but it’s easy to overlook that a restaurant which just caused a food poisoning outbreak is held to a higher standard of accountability than usual.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Kaito Kozono is a key shortstop for the Hiroshima Carp who won the Central League batting title in 2023. He married in 2021 to a woman whose identity was initially withheld, later revealed to be influencer Lisa Watanabe. This mid-season divorce announcement is unusual, and the facts are tangled — from the “close-up photos” Bunshun reported involving another woman, to counter-allegations of an affair on Watanabe’s side. Reactions in the thread mixed criticism of and sympathy for Kozono with suspicion toward Watanabe, resisting any simple “perpetrator vs. victim” framing. The discussion also branched into topics unrelated to the divorce itself — rumors of a posting-system move or trade next season, and grumbling about the team’s treatment of players — showing that his on-field reputation (as a former batting champion) and his personal-life reputation are being judged on separate tracks. It’s worth noting that Bunshun’s report may reflect only one side’s account, and with no official comment yet from either party, much of this remains speculation.

Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island (released July 24) has surpassed ¥13.89 billion in box office gross and 9.6 million admissions over 45 days since release. That figure makes it a smash hit, surpassing both the currently-running Detective Conan: Highway Fallen Angel (released April 10, ¥13.7 billion gross) and Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (released 2021, ¥13.89 billion gross), landing it at No. 23 on the all-time box office rankings. It has become this year’s top-grossing hit film (according to Kogyo Tsushinsha). While the all-time ranking shows the same figure as Jujutsu Kaisen 0, the company clarified in an interview that Chiikawa has in fact already surpassed it, and that rounding to the nearest million yen puts the gross at ¥13.9 billion.

    64AnonymousSep 9, 2026 11:54
    Re: #46
Owning their own theater chain is apparently one big reason.

And TOHO Cinemas locations are all prime real estate, putting them a couple tiers above everyone else. Being able to handle everything in-house from production to distribution is a strategy other companies can't easily copy, or so they say.
    67AnonymousSep 9, 2026 11:55
    Re: #46
Also, they simply have more theater seats, so they don't hit a ceiling — meaning fewer lost opportunities.
    166AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:15
    Re: #46
Also, Toei basically only handles its own productions, and Shochiku's really just got Gundam. That's the whole picture.
    73AnonymousSep 9, 2026 11:56
In terms of what the creator's actually making, this has got to be way ahead of everything else.
    83AnonymousSep 9, 2026 11:59
    Re: #73
That common line about 'no matter how big a movie hits, the creator only gets original-work royalties' doesn't really apply here, since they're heavily involved all the way from the screenplay to overall supervision. Not sure what the profit split looks like, but combined with merchandise rights it's probably a serious amount.
    74AnonymousSep 9, 2026 11:56
    Re: #66
Toho's mostly just distributing though — barely any of it is actually their own production.

    Re: #74
Even so, this has to move the stock price, right?

Wish they'd bring back the Toei Manga Matsuri (a classic anime-movie festival event).

    Re: #88
They still do it periodically, it just doesn't get any buzz (though admittedly it's quite different from the old days).

Wait… a butt as the main character… somehow that's kind of wholesome.

    Re: #102
    Yeah. Dragon Ball too.
    89AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:00
This really highlights how cost-inefficient Demon Slayer is by comparison. Chiikawa's character designs are simple, so it's cheap to produce and easy to turn into merch.
    119AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:07
    Re: #89
Demon Slayer's stuck with this pressure to always deliver high production quality, which is brutal. They push the studio to its limits over long stretches to make it — being able to crank films out quickly like Conan or Chiikawa is way better.
    111AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:06
Some people are acting like this movie was some huge windfall, but Chiikawa's market size was already said to be in the hundreds of billions of yen — it was already selling like crazy even without the movie. Weird, considering it's been constantly buzzing on X too.
    121AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:08
    Re: #111
Compared to all that, even the entire movie's box office take is basically just a bonus.
    130AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:09
    Re: #111
Up until now it's mostly stayed within Japan and parts of Asia, but with the movie as a springboard, the odds of a full worldwide rollout are rising.
    156AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:14
    Re: #111
Honestly it's baffling that people who post here don't know about the My Hero Academia collab from four years ago, or the Hankyu Railway collab from three years ago. You'd think that given how much manga, trains, and reselling get talked about here… well, I guess if you're not interested in something it just doesn't register.

    Chiikawa:
    Serialization → X (not usable by under-13s)
Collected volumes → published under Morning
    168AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:17
What was the plan for the bonus goods if the movie had flopped? Did they just throw them together in a rush once it looked like a hit?
    174AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:18
    Re: #168
Given the sheer number of collabs, they clearly took the risk and went all in.

    Re: #168
There's no way they threw that stuff together last minute.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Because the box office rankings are preliminary figures from Kogyo Tsushinsha rounded to the nearest million yen, the “identical figure” shown for Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is just a rounding artifact — in reality, Chiikawa has already pulled ahead. The thread’s confusion over Demon Slayer’s ¥40 billion versus ¥120 billion came from comparing domestic gross to worldwide gross; measured on a consistent basis, the actual increase is much smaller. An often-overlooked factor behind Toho’s recent dominance of major hits is the structural advantage of owning its own theater chain (TOHO Cinemas), letting it handle everything in-house from production through distribution and screening. Also, how much money flows back to the original creator varies enormously depending on the contract — since the creator is involved here in the screenplay and overall supervision, the payout is likely well above the usual “original-work royalty only” rate.

  • Erika Sawajiri’s Reported “Bar-Hopping Date” with A.B.C-Z’s Ryosuke Hashimoto Sparks Truth-or-Fiction Debate on 5ch

On September 9, 2026, NEWS Postseven reported that actress Erika Sawajiri (40) was spotted near a high-end Italian restaurant in Tokyo. She was reportedly wearing a long white dress and flashing a girlish smile, and the headline used the phrase “six-hour bar-hopping date” with A.B.C-Z’s Ryosuke Hashimoto. On 5ch’s Geinou/Sports Breaking News+ (Geisoku) thread, reactions split over whether the report is true, what it could mean for Hashimoto and his agency, and how to judge “the Sawajiri of today” given her past divorce and drug arrest.

    2026.09.09 11:00 NEWS Postseven

Night had fallen over Shibuya. A luxury car pulled up to the curb, and a woman in a lovely white long dress stepped out. Even with a cherry-blossom-pink cap pulled low over her eyes, there was no hiding her small face and long limbs. Actress Erika Sawajiri (40) — known to fans as “Erika-sama” — radiated an overwhelming glow.

Without hesitation, she headed straight for an upscale Italian restaurant facing the street. The glass-walled storefront let passersby see inside. From the sidewalk, Sawajiri glanced into the restaurant, flashed a girlish smile, and gave a small wave.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

This article is based on a sighting reported by NEWS Postseven — there has been no official comment or relationship announcement from either Erika Sawajiri or A.B.C-Z’s side. Ryosuke Hashimoto is a member of A.B.C-Z, part of the former Johnny’s Entertainment (now STARTO ENTERTAINMENT). Sawajiri was arrested for possession of a synthetic drug in 2019 and has a marriage and divorce in her past, so the thread was a mix of voices doubting the report’s accuracy, others judging her harshly in light of her history, and still others simply praising her looks. It’s worth noting that the phrase “six-hour bar-hopping date” was coined by the magazine’s editorial team and isn’t primary evidence confirming an actual relationship. Some posters also worried about the impact on Hashimoto’s fanbase, with the conversation drifting more toward reactions to the report than the report’s substance itself.
