  • ‘Tribute Girl’ Riri Sends Letter From Prison, Says She’s Cut Ties With the ‘Bad World’

On September 17, the YouTube channel “Maruyama Gonzalez’s Deep World” posted a video titled “What Is ‘Tribute Girl’ Riri Up to Now?”, in which writer Shinya Kusaka revealed he has received two letters this year from inmate Mai Watanabe, who is currently serving her sentence. Watanabe was sentenced to 8 years and 6 months in prison plus a fine of 8 million yen for swindling roughly 150 million yen out of three men, among other charges — a ruling that has since been finalized. In the letters, she reportedly said she had cut ties with “people from the bad world” and pleaded, “Please, I want to talk again.” On 5ch, reactions split over how to take her words of repentance, with plenty of comments also focused on the harshness of her sentence and the fact that she’s profiting off broadcasting even from behind bars.

On September 17, the YouTube channel “Maruyama Gonzalez’s Deep World” (1.59 million subscribers) posted a video titled “What Is ‘Tribute Girl’ Riri Up to Now? Things Have Taken a Major Turn [Underworld Times],” in which writer Shinya Kusaka revealed he has received two letters this year from inmate Mai Watanabe, the “tribute girl” known as “Riri-chan” (10,000 subscribers on her own channel), who is currently serving her sentence.

Restitution project derailed by a romance with a pen pal

Watanabe was charged with swindling roughly 150 million yen out of three men and with aiding fraud by selling a manual detailing her methods, among other charges, and in January 2025 her sentence of 8 years and 6 months in prison plus a fine of 8 million yen was finalized.

Her supporters and the people around her seem kind of unhinged, or maybe they've been brainwashed? Like, they see her as beneath them, feel some sympathy, and it turns into a warped sense of justice. Apparently she has some kind of support or rehabilitation team, and it's bizarre how the people who deal with her directly — lawyers, reporters — keep turning into allies one after another.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Mai Watanabe, known as “tribute girl Riri-chan,” had her sentence of 8 years and 6 months in prison plus a fine of 8 million yen finalized in January 2025 for swindling a total of roughly 150 million yen out of three men, among other charges. The reason someone behind bars can get information out to the public is that writer Shinya Kusaka acts as a go-between through visits and letters, and Watanabe’s writings are reportedly published for a fee, pulling in nearly 3 million yen in under two months. On the thread, opinions split between those questioning how harsh the sentence is and those calling it “practically light compared to other heinous crimes,” with some describing the way supporters, lawyers, and reporters keep becoming cooperative one after another as “brainwashing.” At the same time, exchanging letters and broadcasting from prison are not illegal in themselves, and the fact that her restitution project has reportedly stalled due to her relationship with a pen pal is a piece of the factual record worth noting separately from the emotional backlash.

  • Hiroyuki Weighs In on Why There Are No Amateur Debate Shows: ‘It’s Boring, and Few People Can Actually Talk’

Businessman Hiroyuki Nishimura (49), on his own YouTube channel, was asked by a viewer to “do a debate show with a bunch of amateurs,” and flatly shot the idea down: “It’s boring, and there are few people who can actually talk.” On 5ch’s Entertainment & Sports News+ board, his comment sparked a wave of discussion citing real debate and talk shows like Serious Teens’ Talk Room, Abema Prime, and Asa made Nama TV as examples. While some argued that amateur participants tend to just sit there like furniture, many others pointed out the reality that these shows are often “scripted first,” with writers and editors shaping things beforehand — making the production structure of debate shows itself the main topic of discussion.

Businessman Hiroyuki Nishimura (49) updated his YouTube channel by the 18th, sharing his personal take on why there are no debate shows featuring amateurs.

[Photo included] “Until 5 AM…” Reactions to the ultra-luxe trio: “What an incredible lineup”

A viewer left a comment saying, “I’d like to see the Hiroyuki Channel do a debate show with a bunch of amateurs,” but Hiroyuki cut it down flatly: “Why do you think shows like that don’t happen? It’s because they’re boring, and there are few people who can actually talk.”

I saw a clip from Ariyoshi's radio show where he said guys from the Yoshimoto talent agency basically only toss the ball to their own Yoshimoto buddies, so even a fellow comedian from a different agency can end up barely getting to talk for hours.

"What do you mean by that?!"
"You're wrong about that! Completely wrong!"
And if he's not interested, he just completely ignores you and goes,
    "What do you think?"

Tahara riles everyone up and then gets heated himself, so it turns into a shouting match, not a debate.

That's a line Yamamoto Taro uses a lot.
Though at his own party-dissolution press conference, his true colors seemed to show and he talked in a really careless, throwaway tone.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

How much scripting or editing goes into a debate show varies from program to program, and production teams rarely say so outright. Even amateur-participation and debate-style shows like Serious Teens’ Talk Room and Asa made Nama TV, despite their near-live format, are widely believed by viewers to involve pre-arranged discussions and editing behind the scenes, and comments in the thread speculating about that reality stood out. Hiroyuki’s remark that “few people can actually talk” is simply his own personal opinion stated on his YouTube channel, not a verified account of what goes on behind the scenes in production. The thread’s debate split between those who blame amateur participants themselves for lacking speaking skills, and those who point to the structure of the shows — the network choosing who gets the mic, limited speaking time — as the real cause.

  • FC’s ‘King’s Knight’ Turns 40 — 5ch: “Controls Were Terrible, Game Was Boring”

King’s Knight, the Famicom game released by Square (as it was known then) on September 18, 1986, celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. An article spotlighting retro games sparked a wave of nostalgia on 5ch, but opinions split sharply down the middle: harsh takes like “the controls were the absolute worst, total garbage, boring” versus high praise like “as much fun as Super Mario.” Many recalled picking it up expecting an RPG based on the box art, only to be thrown off when it turned out to be more of a shooter-style action game, and there was also a stream of posts mixing it up with similarly named but unrelated titles like King of Kings and King’s Field.

Pretty much every game that shows up on those retro-game walkthrough channels on YouTube is a bad game, honestly.

Most people probably saw a clear video of this on YouTube for the first time too.

    Background and Discussion Points

King’s Knight was one of the early titles Square put out in 1986, years before it would go on to create Final Fantasy, with music composed by Nobuo Uematsu. At the time, Square was still mostly known for porting PC games and putting out titles that resembled other companies’ work — this release predates the studio’s full pivot to RPGs. As a result, despite its fantasy-style box art, the game itself leaned heavily toward shooting-style action, and the thread kept circling back to the same disconnect: “I rented it expecting an RPG and it turned out to be a shooter.” The thread also pointed out a mechanic where the final stage can’t be cleared unless all the characters have been gathered together, suggesting this was a game that was genuinely hard to fully grasp without a manual or strategy guide back then. Note that despite the similar name, it’s unrelated to King’s Field (from From Software).

  • Sandwichman’s Takeshi Tomizawa Reveals His Illness: ‘People With This Body Type Get It’ — Idegawa: ‘Me Too,’ Kondo Haruna: ‘Same Here’

Sandwichman’s Takeshi Tomizawa appeared on TV Tokyo’s “Lazy but Healthy! Idegawa & Sandwichman’s Tomizawa Body Excuses,” which aired on the 16th, in a segment where he revealed a chronic condition. Filling in for Mikio Date, who is recovering from a stroke, Tomizawa co-starred with Tetsuro Idegawa and Haruna Kondo. When Tomizawa said, “People with this body type get it,” Idegawa chimed in with “Me too,” and Kondo added, “Same here.” On 5ch, the confession sparked a wider health debate about the value of full-body checkups and the risks tied to obesity, with opinions split.

Takeshi Tomizawa (52), of the comedy duo Sandwichman, appeared on TV Tokyo’s “Lazy but Healthy! Idegawa & Sandwichman’s Tomizawa Body Excuses” (airing 6:25 PM), broadcast on the 16th. During the show, he revealed a health condition he’s suffered from.

The special is a health variety show introducing super-simple health methods. Mikio Date, originally scheduled to appear, is recovering from a stroke, so Tomizawa appeared alongside Tetsuro Idegawa and Harisenbon’s Haruna Kondo instead.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This episode aired with Takeshi Tomizawa filling in for Mikio Date, who is recovering from a stroke, on TV Tokyo’s health variety show built around full-body-checkup-style segments. The thread’s opinions split over whether full checkups are actually worth getting — some praised their value for early detection, while others were skeptical, arguing that going just once a year doesn’t move the odds much. On the popular belief that “fat people don’t get cancer,” commenters pointed out that other risks like heart disease, diabetes, and high uric acid tend to surface first, and that obesity itself is also said to raise the risk of certain cancers, including colon cancer — so it’s not as simple as the stereotype suggests. Note that the exact illness Tomizawa revealed on the show isn’t specified within the quoted portion of this article; some thread comments are speculation based on his known history of kidney stones, so the official diagnosis should be confirmed via the original article.

  • Takarazuka Revue to Stage ‘Dangerous Detectives’ — Fans React: ‘Suits! Sunglasses! They’ll Nail It!’

On September 18, the “ABDK40+” project marking the 40th anniversary of the detective drama Dangerous Detectives (Abunai Deka), starring Hiroshi Tachi and Kyohei Shibata, announced on its official Instagram that the series will be adapted into a Takarazuka Revue stage production. The drama, which began airing in 1986, became a hit for its breezy banter and stylish action, and was later made into films. News of the announcement lit up 5ch’s Entertainment & Sports News+ board, with welcoming comments like “Suits! Sunglasses! They’ll totally pull it off,” alongside a mix of anticipation and skepticism over how the stage could recreate the original’s motorcycle stunts and jump scenes, and more chatter about casting than the story itself.

“ABDK40+ (Abu-Deka 40 Plus),” the project celebrating the 40th anniversary of the legendary detective drama Dangerous Detectives starring Hiroshi Tachi and Kyohei Shibata, announced on the 18th via its official Instagram and other channels that the series is set to be adapted into a Takarazuka Revue stage production. Online reactions spread quickly, with comments like “Suits! Sunglasses! They’ll definitely pull it off, but seriously?!”

Dangerous Detectives began airing on Nippon TV in 1986. Tachi and Shibata played the stylish, unconventional pair of detectives Taka (Toshiki Takayama) and Yuji (Yuji Oshita), and the show became a hit for its breezy dialogue, fashion, and flashy action sequences, later spawning film adaptations.

Apparently it's an original character named Amy.

Set in Yokohama in 1989, just before the opening of the Yokohama Expo, the story follows Taka and his partner Yuji as they close in on the truth behind the death of their fellow officer Yamazoe, who was killed seven years earlier in a conspiracy. The production dramatically portrays, through Takarazuka's own lens, Taka's fierce way of life and sense of manly aesthetics as he stands by Amy — Yamazoe's grief-stricken former fiancée.

Wait, did they actually do Aibou (Partners)?

    Background and Key Points

The Takarazuka Revue has previously adapted live-action dramas for the stage, including Aibou (Partners), and this new Dangerous Detectives production fits that same pattern. The original is a Nippon TV detective drama that began airing in 1986, and its popularity rested on the breezy banter and stylish action between Taka and Yuji, played by Hiroshi Tachi and Kyohei Shibata. In the thread, the main points of discussion were technical questions about how the stage production would recreate signature elements of the original — motorcycle scenes, jumps, running shots — along with speculation about who would play the supporting and villain roles. It’s worth noting that in 2023, Takarazuka Revue’s management acknowledged bullying (power harassment) in connection with a troupe member’s death, and some posters referenced that history to criticize the company’s management — though that is a separate issue from this stage adaptation announcement.

This time, a shared scene between the two has finally come to pass, and Yamamoto commented, “I’m glad I was born on this Earth.” On 5ch, favorable reactions like “Even Oda’s mellowed out” stood out, though some saw the collaboration as little more than a publicity stunt, splitting opinion.

The one where he showed up late to a press conference, tried to lighten the mood by saying 'I was in the bathroom,' and nearly got killed backstage for it.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Takahiro Yamamoto’s impression of Yuji Oda is built on a bit from an eye-drop commercial (the Sanwell series) famous for the catchphrase “Kitaa!,” and he’s kept it as his signature act for over 20 years, dating back to when he was still unknown. In the entertainment industry, continuing an impression without the celebrity’s blessing has, in some cases, damaged relations with the person or their agency, and there’s a history of Yamamoto reportedly being kept at arm’s length by Oda’s side in the past. This announcement of their shared scene comes against the backdrop of that “long-running rift,” and on the forum, opinions split between those who took a favorable view of Oda’s apparent change of heart and those who saw it as just a publicity stunt. It’s also worth noting that comments about opening-day seat availability and box-office draw reflect individual posters’ personal observations, not official box-office figures.

  • ‘Japan Was Supposed to Be Perfect’… Asian Games Shatter the Myth, Indian Magazine Slams Organizers: ‘Could Shake Japan’s Reputation’

Ahead of the Asian Games opening on the 19th in Aichi/Nagoya, India’s sports magazine “Sportstar” published an article titled “Chaos, Complaints, Crisis,” criticizing the event’s mismanagement. According to the article, the first group of the Indian delegation — including rowing athletes — was left waiting nearly 12 hours after arriving on site, with neither accommodations nor meal arrangements in place. On 5ch, comments crossed multiple lines: some pointed out that operations are run by France’s GL events with Japan playing only a minor role; others took issue with the roughly 370-billion-yen total project cost; and still others lamented “Japan’s declining national strength” against the backdrop of the weak yen and rising prices — broadening the discussion well beyond an assessment of the Games themselves.

Opening at last on the 19th

The Aichi/Nagoya Asian Games open on the 19th. Some events have already begun, but Indian media have been critical of the Games’ operational missteps.

The article, published under the provocative title “Chaos, Complaints, Crisis: How the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games Created a View at Odds with Japanese Perfection,” appeared in India’s sports magazine “Sportstar.”

That one's not really a big deal lol
They sound pretty much the same anyway.

Background and Key Points of This Story

The immediate trigger for this criticism was a specific complaint: after arriving on site, the Indian delegation was left waiting nearly 12 hours with neither accommodations nor meals arranged. The event’s operator is France’s GL events, while overall authority rests with the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), headquartered in Kuwait — threads on 5ch repeatedly note that Japan’s own say in running things was limited. Total project costs are estimated at roughly 370 billion yen, and that scale of spending has also become a point of contention. At the same time, criticism of the operational setup itself tends to blur together on the thread with laments framed around “Japan’s declining national and economic strength,” making this a topic where it’s hard to draw a clean line between fact and impression. Commentary about the Aichi governor and the current administration also crept into the discussion at points, so it’s worth noting how easily criticism of event management gets tangled up with political likes and dislikes.

What an MC needs is the ability to put things into words.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Tontsukatan was a duo made up of Morimoto and his partner Sakurada (Omattya), but the pair disbanded this past April and the duo’s name stayed with Sakurada’s side rather than Morimoto’s. The official reason for the name change hasn’t been disclosed, but the thread focused heavily on the fact that “Morimoto Shintaro” shares the exact same name as SixTONES’ Morimoto Shintaro. Celebrities sharing identical names isn’t unusual, and the resulting confusion in TV listings and search results has been a recurring topic in the past as well. Since Tontsukatan started out as a unit that Morimoto joined after the fact, it’s said that this is why his side wasn’t able to keep the duo’s name when it disbanded. That said, neither party has explained the details of the exchanges behind the breakup or the direct reason for the name change, so it’s worth noting that everything in the thread remains speculation.

    Background and Talking Points

Tomoya Nagase has long been known for his trademark long hair, so this short-haired look came as a big surprise to many fans. Hiroshi Fujiwara, who appeared alongside him, is a major figure in Japan’s street fashion and DJ scene on par with names like NIGO, and thread users well-versed in the scene brought up brand names like Neighborhood. Meanwhile, some expressed confusion over Nagase’s current title being listed as “expressionist” and “challenger,” suggesting his position hasn’t fully settled since he stepped back from mainstream entertainment work. Some posts in the thread also speculated about his health, but since that isn’t an officially confirmed fact and remains unverified personal opinion, it has been left out of this article.

  • Sankyu Mart Cancels Merch Launch After Fans Say It “Evokes M!LK”

Sankyu Mart, a variety-goods chain where everything is priced at a flat 390 yen (429 yen tax included), has canceled the launch of “Growing Fast with Your Oshi and Milk!” — a line of fan-merch that had been set to open pre-orders on the 18th. The series, themed around fruit milk with milk- and cow-motif costumes for plush toys, acrylic keychains, and more, had been planned for release at stores nationwide from mid-November. The cancellation came after a wave of complaints from fans that the goods’ color lineup overlapped with the member colors of the five-member group “M!LK.” On 5channel threads, though, plenty of posters questioned the complaint itself, pointing out that “milk” is a generic word to begin with and that similar color lineups aren’t unusual for other idol merch either.

The product had drawn a wave of comments saying it evoked the five-member dance-and-vocal group “M!LK.”

The series was themed around “fruit milk,” offering fan-merch items with milk and cow motifs — including costumes for plush toys, card holders, and acrylic frame keychains. Pre-orders were set to open online at noon on the 18th, with sales at stores nationwide to follow from mid-November.

    20AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:50
Wait, does MiLK sell milk merch or something?
    21AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:51
So "loving them so much it kills me" turned out to mean it literally, huh.
    22AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:52
Milk's been around way longer, they should've just stood their ground
Did they really do a 5-color lineup?
    34AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:56
    Re: #22
Those 5 colors are literally M!LK's member colors
    23AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:52
If anything, it's on them for naming themselves after a common noun like "milk"
At this rate no one could ever use dairy products in merch again
    25AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:53
It's not even copyright infringement, so what's the actual problem?
    Makes no sense
    28AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:54
Feel bad for Sankyu Mart and the manufacturer
    29AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:55
"Growing Fast with Your Oshi and Milk"
Whoever at the company approved that title is dumb, and whoever wrote that catchphrase — in-house or an outside copywriter — is way too dumb
    30AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:55
Could this mean merch and accessories won't even be able to print "MILK" on them anymore?
Are this group's fans mostly the difficult type?
    32AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:56
Don't name yourselves after everyday words like "milk"
You're the ones getting in everyone's way
    33AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:56
No way… don't tell me they actually complained just because the colors overlapped?
    35AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:56
    Re: #24

Been active since way back then and only just now broke through
    Gotta respect the persistence
    37AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:57
You're the ones who used a common noun as your group name in the first place
You already swamped search results for "Stones," and you're still at it? (referencing past complaints that fans flooded web searches for an ordinary word)
    38AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:58
M!LK, you're the ones causing the trouble here, so you should be the ones changing your name
    40AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:59
Ugh, Johnny's fans causing trouble again?
    44AnonymousSep 18, 2026 18:01
    Re: #40
    Stardust fans, not Johnny's
    42AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:59
    Re: #1
Does this actually touch on copyright or portrait rights or anything?
    48AnonymousSep 18, 2026 18:03
I think it's about time companies started pushing back on complaints like this
    49AnonymousSep 18, 2026 18:04
They did use the word "oshi," after all
It's not a word used exclusively for idols, but you can see why people would read it as intentional
A retreat born from pushing it right up to the line
    51AnonymousSep 18, 2026 18:05
Stardust literally just put out a statement saying they'll deal strictly with slander and rights infringement
Whoever planned this was an idiot
    52AnonymousSep 18, 2026 18:05
So what does big sis P!nk have to say about all this?
    53AnonymousSep 18, 2026 18:07
    What about Super Milk-chan, then?
    62AnonymousSep 18, 2026 18:10
Would something like this get people fired up nowadays?

    Background and Points of Debate

M!LK is a group under Stardust Promotion whose member colors are white, yellow, pink, red, and blue — five colors in all. Since the new milk-themed merch used an almost identical five-color lineup, fans flagged it as “evocative” of the group. It’s easy to miss that no copyright or trademark infringement was ever established here — this was a voluntary cancellation by the company in response to complaints about impression alone. Thread opinion was split: some questioned why a mere color overlap should be enough to force a product’s cancellation, while others criticized the group for adopting a generic word like “milk” as its name in the first place. As the fan-merch market keeps expanding rapidly, clashes like this — between member colors or motifs and products from unrelated genres — seem likely to keep happening.
