  • ‘I support them without spending a cent’ post splits opinion — 5ch: ‘Just showing up to a venue means you’ve already spent money’

A post on X read: “I don’t go to concerts, I don’t buy merch, and I don’t spend money on the idol I support. But I watch livestreams and leave comments on social media — I cheer them on as much as I can, in whatever way I’m able to.” A thread on 5ch’s Hello! Project board quoted the post and set off a heated for-and-against debate. Since idol events earn most of their revenue from face-to-face spending — things like cheki photo sessions and merchandise — the thread’s central question became whether “supporting without spending money” counts as real support at all. Posters split along the usual line between “genba wota” (fans who pay to physically attend events) and “zaitaku wota” (fans who engage only through streams and social media), with some arguing “just by showing up to a venue, you’ve already spent money” and others countering “everyone’s entitled to support in their own way.”

I don't even go to concerts. I don't buy merch. I don't spend money on the idol I support!
But I watch livestreams, comment on social media posts, and cheer them on as much as I can, in whatever way I'm able to.

Being a longtime fan, or someone who travels far and wide to every show, has nothing to do with being 'amazing.' The person who's truly amazing and admirable is the one enduring the situation of wanting to go to a concert but not being able to.
How many concerts you've been to, how many years you've been a fan, how many cheki photos (instant meet-and-greet photos) you've taken — none of that matters at all. That goes for every kind of fan.

Idols battling it out over how much fans spend is tame stuff. Adult-video actresses run way more events with ¥100k/¥300k/¥500k spending tiers, and the more you pay to join, the better you get treated — it turns into an ever-escalating pecking order.

Buying tickets is just a hassle.
    Don't need the merch either.
But I do like Hello! Project's shows and the members, so sometimes I end up criticizing stuff too.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Revenue at idol events tends to center on “in-person spending” — things like cheki photo sessions and merchandise — while watching livestreams or leaving comments on social media doesn’t translate directly into revenue. Because of this, whether “supporting without spending money” counts as being a real fan is a theme that has come up again and again across the idol world, not just within Hello! Project, and this thread is just the latest example. What split the thread was whether to measure support by “money” or by “feelings”: fans who physically attend events are conscious of the time and physical cost they’re paying, which creates a structure where they tend to push back against people claiming to “support” the idol without spending anything. On the other hand, view counts and social media reactions do sometimes factor into promotion and how songs get evaluated, so it’s not entirely fair to say non-monetary support is meaningless. Since this backdrop isn’t spelled out in the quoted replies themselves, it helps readers to know going in that the divide between “genba wota” (fans who attend in person) and “zaitaku wota” (fans who engage only from home) is itself a long-standing, customary line drawn within the idol industry — understanding that makes the thread’s temperature easier to read.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “A post on X (Twitter): “I don’t go to concerts. I don’t buy merch. I don’t spend money on the idol I support. But I watch the livestreams and comment on social media — I support them plenty!”“.

  • “For the Athletically Challenged, PE Class Is a ‘Public Execution’” — The Flaws in Japanese Education That Breed a Hatred of Sports

Following an article on “hating sports” published by Daily Shincho on October 4, reactions poured in on 5ch’s Geisports Sokuho+ board over the phrase “PE class is a public execution.” Posters swapped stories of dreading specific moments — dodgeball, swimming, the back-hip circle on the bar — while others pushed back, arguing “it’s not just PE; you can be humiliated in music, art, and academics too.” The debate split along a central fault line: is this a problem unique to PE, or a problem with education as a whole? Some pointed out that PE grades affect the internal assessment scores used for high school admissions, while others raised the contradiction that athletic ability is treated as genetic while academic performance is treated as a matter of effort — pushing the discussion toward the education system itself.

    Daily Shincho, 10/4

They call it “sports season” in autumn, but there must be no shortage of people who hate sports. For them, this might just be the start of a dreary season. But is “hating sports” really such a bad thing?

In PE volleyball it's usually just amateur lob serves that are easy to return, and even the athletic guys usually don't have much actual volleyball experience, so I didn't think the skill gap was that big.

The problem is too many people know athletic ability is mostly genetic but somehow don't realize learning ability is too.

PE teachers are, obviously, people who loved PE themselves, so naturally they've got nothing to teach a kid who "couldn't do anything from the start" — and since they already looked down on those kids to begin with, they never had much motivation to actually teach them anyway.
    138AnonymousOct 4, 2026 11:57

They rounded up just the kids who couldn't do it — after school, I think, or during free periods — and made us practice over and over, about 5 of us.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

In many regions, Japan’s public high school entrance exams factor in not just the academic test score but also the junior high “naishinten” internal assessment (grades across all subjects), which means PE, music, and art grades feed directly into which high school a student can get into. That’s the system behind the thread comment about having “to settle for a lower-ranked high school because of PE grades.” The debate split between those who see this as a problem unique to PE and those who argued that “music and schoolwork carry that same sense of being put on display” — though both sides shared frustration with PE teachers’ lack of teaching skill. Some argued athletic ability is purely genetic, but the thread never actually examined the relative weight of effort versus environmental factors, so it’s worth noting no definitive conclusion was reached.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

When constipation becomes chronic, it’s known to develop into a condition called ‘retained stool’ (shukuben), where waste sits lodged in the intestines for extended periods — in severe cases, medication or medical procedures become essential just to have a bowel movement. In the thread, people who regularly rely on laxatives pointed out that ‘with habitual use, they stop working as well and you end up needing bigger doses,’ a phenomenon also recognized in medicine as laxative tolerance, which overlaps with Matsumoto’s confession that she can no longer pass stool on her own. At the same time, opinions in the thread split between those blaming diet and those pointing to lack of exercise, weak muscles, or stress, with no clear consensus reached. Readers should note that the 4kg figure is simply Matsumoto’s own self-reported account, not a medically measured value. It’s generally known that when stool keeps building up in the intestines over a long period, cases can arise where manual disimpaction or surgery ultimately becomes necessary — but exactly what kind of surgery Matsumoto underwent isn’t made clear from her remarks in the video.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread ‘[Entertainment] Akiko Matsumoto Confesses Her ‘Horrific History of Intestinal Stool Buildup’: ‘It Got So Bad I Needed Surgery’ / ‘My Body Can No Longer Pass Stool on Its Own’ — 4kg of Stool Constantly Accumulated in Her Intestines.’

  • Southern All Stars’ Kazuyuki Sekiguchi’s company under-reported ¥580 million in income — 5ch: “How much is this guy even making?”

A Fuji TV report revealed that a company run by Southern All Stars member Kazuyuki Sekiguchi was found by the Tokyo Regional Taxation Bureau to have under-reported roughly ¥580 million in income following a tax audit. The report noted that the stock transactions in question were processed only on the books, with no actual money changing hands, and attention focused on the sheer size of the amount already said to have been paid. On 5ch, discussion centered on the view that this looks less like tax avoidance and more like outright tax evasion, alongside surprise that a member who doesn’t write the band’s lyrics or music could be earning this much — with the conversation spreading into speculation about just how much frontman Keisuke Kuwata himself must make.

Honestly, as long as you've got Kuwata and his wife, you don't need the other members.
Unless Sekiguchi is actually the one writing the lyrics and music, honestly Southern All Stars would work fine even if the other members got swapped out for completely different people, as long as Kuwata and his wife are there.

Background and Key Points of This Story

“Under-reported income” and “tax evasion” carry different legal weight. Depending on how clearly wrongdoing and intent can be proven, a National Tax Agency audit can end simply with a finding of under-reported income and a demand for back taxes, or it can escalate into a criminal tax evasion case referred to prosecutors. What’s been reported here is the former — this has not become a criminal case. On the thread, some pointed to the article’s description of stock transactions being processed only on paper with no actual money changing hands as grounds for suspecting malicious tax evasion, while others speculated he was let off lightly because he’s a celebrity. It’s worth noting that the actual severity of the situation can’t be judged from the article’s information alone. The thread also discussed a claim that songwriting and composing royalties go only to Keisuke Kuwata and Yuko Hara, with the remainder split five ways among the other members — but it should be noted this is unverified information from the thread itself, with no cited source.

  • Tokugawa Ieyasu Casting Ranking Revealed: Matsumoto Jun Takes #1 — 5ch: ‘Tsugawa at #2 Made Me Think It Was a Prank’

The results of a TRILL survey asking 300 men and women aged in their teens to seventies “Which actor was best suited to play Tokugawa Ieyasu?” became a hot topic on 5ch’s Geinou/Sports News+ board. Masahiko Tsugawa came in 2nd, Toshiyuki Nishida 3rd, and taking 1st place was Matsumoto Jun, who played Ieyasu in NHK’s 2023 taiga drama “What Will You Do, Ieyasu?” The thread saw confused reactions like “Tsugawa at #2 and Matsujun at #1 is basically a troll,” while others argued “Ieyasu’s a minor-league character anyway, so casting doesn’t matter much,” and plenty of posts fondly recalled past acclaimed Ieyasus played by Hisaya Morishige, Rentaro Mikuni, and Sakae Takita. Opinions were split on which actor got it “right.”

    TRILL, Oct. 4

When you hear “actor who played Tokugawa Ieyasu,” many of you probably recall the mood of each particular drama, along with that actor’s expressions, voice, and bearing. From the weighty “old crafty fox” image to a more human figure wrestling with doubt and conflict, each actor who has taken on Ieyasu has left a different impression.

This time, we surveyed 300 people nationwide, aged in their teens through seventies, on “which actor was best suited to play Tokugawa Ieyasu.” The responses reveal just how much affection people have for their own personal image of Ieyasu. Be sure to check it out!

More than in 'Aoi Tokugawa Sandai,' it's Masahiko Tsugawa's Ieyasu in 'Dokuganryu Masamune' that makes you think, 'Ah, so this is probably what Ieyasu was really like.'
When Katsu Shintaro's Hideyoshi and Watanabe's Masamune first met at the siege of Odawara, with Masamune in his white funeral robes, Ieyasu watched it all coldly yet composedly — it was wonderful how it captured the sense of a man serving Hideyoshi faithfully, as he was known to be at the time.

    Re: #119
I couldn't understand a single word Katsu Shintaro's Hideyoshi was saying lol

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

It’s worth noting that this survey was a consumer poll of 300 people conducted by TRILL, not an assessment of acting skill by experts. Ieyasu is often discussed in terms of a weighty ‘old crafty fox’ image, and the 2nd- and 3rd-place actors, Masahiko Tsugawa and Toshiyuki Nishida, both belong to a generation known for that kind of heavyweight performance. The 1st-place pick, however, was Matsumoto Jun, who played Ieyasu in NHK’s 2023 taiga drama ‘What Will You Do, Ieyasu?’ — a very different generation and image. That gap is exactly what split opinion in the thread: posters familiar with older taiga dramas argued that ‘the role suits a more small-time-looking Ieyasu’ and that ‘Tsugawa comes closest,’ while their standards didn’t line up with those of posters who’d watched the newer series. The fact that the survey spanned respondents from their teens to their seventies is likely another reason the generations disagreed on what counts as well-cast. It’s also worth noting that the thread never specified exactly which work Nishida’s ‘well-suited’ performance referred to — the real point of debate wasn’t so much whether the casting itself was appropriate, but what standard should even be used to judge a ‘well-suited’ performance.

※This article is an excerpt/summary based on the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[Ieyasu] 2nd Place ‘Masahiko Tsugawa,’ 3rd Place ‘Toshiyuki Nishida’ — 300 People Pick the ‘Most Fitting Actor to Ever Play Tokugawa Ieyasu,’ with 1st Place Praised as ‘A New Kind of Ieyasu’ and Having ‘Charismatic Aura’.”

  • Shiori Sato Thrilled as Saitama Escapes Last Place in Prefecture Appeal Rankings: “Amazing!” — Saga, Ibaraki, Gunma Round Out the Bottom Three

In a special program aired on Nippon TV on the 3rd, “The World’s Most Useful School: Tonight’s Big Reveal! The 2026 Prefecture Appeal Rankings of All 47 Prefectures SP,” the latest prefecture appeal rankings were announced. Talent Shiori Sato, a Saitama native, was overjoyed that her home prefecture — a perennial last-place finisher for years — finally escaped the bottom spot, exclaiming, “Wait, really? Amazing!” Meanwhile, Saga, Ibaraki, and Gunma rounded out the bottom three. On 5ch threads, comments pointed out that the ranking may just be measuring name recognition as a tourist destination, while others noted the contradiction with Gunma ranking No. 1 for two years running as a desired relocation destination in a separate survey — fueling debate over how reliable the rankings really are.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The prefecture appeal rankings are an annual survey that always sparks discussion, and this time Saitama escaped last place while Saga, Ibaraki, and Gunma landed in the bottom three. The thread split over what “appeal” actually measures — some argued it merely reflects tourist numbers and name recognition, while others pushed back, pointing out that livability and popularity as a relocation destination are a completely separate matter. In fact, a different survey has Gunma ranked No. 1 for desired relocation destinations for two years running, showing that a low ranking here doesn’t necessarily match how people actually evaluate these places — a point that’s easy to overlook. Distrust of the ranking methodology itself also came up, though that’s a view expressed on 5ch rather than a verified fact. The fact that the governors of Ibaraki and Gunma have publicly complained about their rankings before also suggests this survey carries more influence than just being a talking point.

  • Watabe Ken Returns to Terrestrial TV via Akita TV — 5ch: “Wait, He Hadn’t Already?”

The YouTube show “The Location-Scouting Show, Starring Watabe,” led by Anjash’s Ken Watabe (54), is set to air on terrestrial broadcast TV via Akita TV, in Akita Prefecture — the hometown of his wife, Nozomi Sasaki. The news was announced on the show’s official X account on October 3, and Watabe himself reacted with surprise and delight in the video, exclaiming, “Seriously? Whoa!” On 5ch, though, the dominant reaction wasn’t celebration — it was debate over whether this really counts as a “return to terrestrial TV.” Commenters repeatedly pointed out that Akita TV, as a network affiliate station, occupies a different standing than an independent UHF station like Chiba TV, sparking a broader argument about how regional stations should be classified.

Watabe Ken set for a terrestrial TV comeback in Akita Prefecture with “Watabe Location Scouting” — in wife Sasaki Nozomi’s hometown, calling it “one big, important step”

The YouTube channel starring comedy duo Anjash’s Ken Watabe (54), titled “The Show Where Anjash’s Watabe Location-Scouts While Dreaming of One Day Appearing on a Terrestrial Food Show,” updated its official X account on the 3rd. Watabe announced, “I’m finally back on terrestrial TV.”

The official X account posted, “Anjash’s Watabe — finally back on terrestrial TV,” alongside a video over a minute long. When staff told him, “It’s been decided that ‘Watabe Location Scouting’ will air on terrestrial TV in Akita,” Watabe clapped for himself in delight, exclaiming, “Seriously? Whoa!”

    Re: #56
The definition of 'terrestrial' gets pretty loose in cases like this, but yeah — a regional station tied to a key-station network does feel a notch above an independent station.

Background and Key Points of Debate

Ever since his affair was reported in 2020, Ken Watabe has stepped away from regular TV programs and built his career mainly around YouTube — which is the context that made this “terrestrial broadcast” news notable. That said, this isn’t a nationwide network airing but a single-station deal limited to Akita TV, and that’s exactly what split opinion in the thread: can this really be called a “terrestrial comeback”? At the root of the disagreement is the distinction between Akita TV, a key-station network affiliate, and independent UHF stations like Chiba TV or TOKYO MX. Affiliate stations run programming slots supplied by the key stations, so they’re more readily seen as “terrestrial,” whereas independent stations source their programming differently — and by convention, some viewers don’t count them as “terrestrial” at all. That ambiguity in definition is what creates the gap between the headline phrase “terrestrial comeback” and the actual scale of the broadcast.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Geisupo Sokuhou+) thread “[Entertainment] Watabe Ken Set for a Terrestrial TV Comeback in Akita Prefecture with “Watabe Location Scouting” — In Wife Sasaki Nozomi’s Hometown, Calling It “One Big, Important Step”.”

  • Juice=Juice’s Autumn Tour Setlist Sparks Debate: ‘Snubbing the Newbies’ or ‘Smart to Save the Hits’?

During Juice=Juice’s autumn tour, X (formerly Twitter) buzzed with talk that the first half of the show featured few of the standard songs even newer fans would recognize, leaving the venue oddly quiet. On 5ch, opinions clashed: some argued ‘they already played plenty of newbie-friendly songs back in spring and last autumn’ and ‘holding back the surefire hits and saving them for later is reasonable,’ while others countered that ‘there are actually more newcomers now, so this shows a lack of consideration’ and ‘the old-school fans are using the spring setlist to lord it over everyone.’ The debate over how the setlist was put together left fans divided.

There's only a limited number of songs that actually land with newbies, so think a bit about the timing of when to use them live.
Holding back the surefire hits and saving them for later seems like a reasonable call to me.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Hello! Project idol groups tend to alternate between setlists built around ‘surefire hits’ that even newer fans recognize, and setlists aimed at longtime fans that drop the standards for a different lineup — and this thread’s debate is essentially a reaction to that swing. In idol live culture, the audience’s synchronized ‘calls’ create a sense of unity, but when unfamiliar songs run back-to-back, the calls don’t come and the venue goes quiet — the so-called ‘jizo’ (stone-statue) state. In the thread, opinions split between ‘they already did plenty of newbie-friendly shows in spring and last autumn, so holding back the surefire hits now is reasonable’ and the counterargument that ‘there are actually more newcomers now, so this shows a lack of consideration’ — with no clear consensus on which view is right. It’s also worth noting that the full setlist itself was never confirmed within the thread, and the posts are based solely on individual audience members’ impressions from their respective venues.

  • Hiroshima Manager Arai Apologizes to Fans Over Scandal: ‘We Will Be Reborn Next Season’

On October 3, the Hiroshima Carp came back to beat the Hanshin Tigers 6-4 in their final home game of the season at Mazda Stadium. In the post-game ceremony, manager Takahiro Arai (49) apologized to fans over an in-team scandal, saying, “We the Carp will be reborn next season.” On the 5ch thread (Geisoku Sokuho+), discussion centered less on the apology itself than on claims that nothing will really change unless the team’s upper management — owner Motoo Matsuda and executive director Seimei Suzuki — changes too, with debate also continuing over how the team should handle the player said to be at the center of the scandal.

Well, but it's precisely because he's someone with a track record of sketchy behavior that he ended up photographed getting chummy with anti-social types like drug dealers — and conversely, there's no going after people who don't have photos like that floating around.

And someone who had ties to anti-social forces but still held a press conference with that kind of attitude is, by any measure, a rotten orange (a bad apple that spoils the whole bunch). Now that they've managed to push a player like that out, I think the atmosphere will improve at least a little.

Doesn't matter how many show up, as long as they pay the stadium usage fee properly and help recoup the construction costs. A team like Sanfrecce that never intended to pay toward construction costs in the first place is out of the question, even playing to a full house.

If the team had just taken the lead right away — investigated, made it public, and sent him down to the minors — I don't think this would've blown up this big.
Old-school companies especially love to cover things up, which just drags the news cycle out and ends up handing the tabloids more material, so the team winds up taking the maximum amount of damage in the end.

If they'd dropped the announcement and the punishment themselves right at the start, the initial hit would've been strong, but the news value would've faded fast after that, so the overall damage would've been smaller.

It'd be cruel to make a new manager deal with that, and there probably aren't many people who'd even take the job anyway.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Manager Takahiro Arai’s apology came in response to an “in-team scandal,” but the original article itself never actually spells out what that scandal involved, and the thread’s discussion centered mainly on frustration with the player’s own conduct and with how the front office handled things. Where opinion split was over the question of who should actually be held responsible: many argued that a manager bowing his head alone won’t prevent a repeat unless management itself changes too, pointing to the owning family said to have transferred its shares to the city of Hiroshima, and to Seimei Suzuki, who has held the executive director post for years. On the other hand, almost no one spoke up for the player said to be at the center of it, with some even arguing that the manager’s leniency helped make him worse. The article doesn’t spell out how far “we will be reborn” actually extends into concrete organizational change, so whether next season’s roster moves and front-office shake-up really follow through looks to be the thing worth watching.

  • Arcade burns ¥10,000 an hour”—cost-per-hour hobby comparison sparks pushback

A thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board compared the cost-efficiency of different hobbies: arcades supposedly burn through ¥10,000 in an hour, movies cost ¥1,000 for two hours, and fishing can fill a whole day for just ¥500.

Commenters immediately questioned the numbers themselves, picking apart the movie ticket price and whether anyone really spends ¥10,000 an hour at an arcade. The debate over fishing then split over whether to factor in the upfront cost of rods and reels, and the thread expanded to cover free alternatives like libraries and walks.

If you use the rod and reel for about 10 years, that's just ¥4,000 a year

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The original format—”kills X hours for ¥Y”—is a classic nanG (Nandemo Jikkyo) template for jokingly comparing the hourly cost of different hobbies, and this time arcades, movies, and fishing were the subjects. The thread split mainly over two points. First was whether the original figures—¥10,000 and ¥500—made any sense, with posters like #13 and #59 picking apart the movie ticket price and arcade spending, while others like #14 and #16 pointed to specific ways to blow ¥10,000 an hour at an arcade (medal games, crane games). Second was the premise behind the fishing cost calculation: as the back-and-forth in posts #34, #56, #86, and #90 shows, the “one day for ¥500” claim wobbles depending on whether you count the upfront cost of rods and reels. Readers might easily assume fishing is a casual, low-budget hobby, but the thread shows gear alone can run into the tens of thousands of yen—making it a hobby that doesn’t fit neatly into a simple hourly-rate comparison.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyo G) thread “Arcade: ‘Kills 1 hour for ¥10,000’ / Movie: ‘Kills 2 hours for ¥1,000’ / Fishing: ‘Kills 1 day for ¥500’.”
