  • Japan’s Criminal Justice System Under Fire on 5ch Over UN ‘Shut Up’ Outburst and String of Wrongful Convictions

A 5ch thread titled with the baiting claim that “Japan ranks 4th among major developed nations for judicial human-rights compliance” quickly spiraled into a broader pile-on against Japan’s criminal justice system. Posters brought up the real-life episode from Japan’s 2013 review before the UN Committee Against Torture, when the ambassador for human rights shouted “shut up” in English, alongside a string of wrongful-conviction cases — including the Iizuka case and the torture and evidence fabrication committed by detective Asao Kurebayashi. While many comments zeroed in on Japan’s notoriously long pretrial detention and the secrecy of interrogations, others argued the deeper problem isn’t the legal system itself but the public’s poor grasp of the presumption of innocence — splitting the debate into criticism of the system versus criticism of public attitudes.

'Shut Up' at the UN: Japan's Human Rights Ambassador Speaks Out During Japan Review

[Geneva, Kyodo] It was revealed on the 13th that on May 22, during Japan's review before the UN Committee Against Torture under the human rights treaty, Japan's Ambassador for Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs, Hideaki Ueda, loudly shouted "shut up" in English. "Shut up" is considered an impolite expression in formal settings.

According to a Japanese NGO, during the review a committee member on the Committee Against Torture pointed out that "Japan's criminal justice system relies too heavily on confessions — it's like something out of the Middle Ages." When Ambassador Ueda countered, "Japan's human rights record is advanced. It's not like the Middle Ages," laughter broke out in the room, at which point Ueda reportedly shouted, "What's so funny? Shut up."

    The King of Wrongful Convictions
    Asao Kurebayashi

In the cases he personally handled — the Koura case (death sentence, later acquitted), the Futamata case (death sentence, later acquitted), the Kojima case (life sentence, later acquitted), and the Shimada case (death sentence, later acquitted) — he tortured innocent people into false confessions and fabricated evidence, manufacturing one wrongful conviction after another. His methods went on to influence other Shizuoka Prefectural Police officers, including his own subordinates, and even though Kurebayashi himself wasn't directly involved in the investigation, they helped create the conditions for later wrongful convictions like the Hakamada case (death sentence, later acquitted).

Because he used every method imaginable to torture suspects into confessing, he's known as the "Torture King of the Showa Era" and the "King of Wrongful Convictions."

Kurebayashi devised various torture methods himself but didn't carry them out directly, instead ordering his subordinates to do so. A book about the Futamata case by Heihachi Yamazaki also alleges that Kurebayashi took bribes from the person believed to be the actual perpetrator.

Even medieval witch trials needed physical evidence before they'd burn you at the stake
So that means Japan is below medieval Europe

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Ambassador Hideaki Ueda’s “shut up” outburst was a real, documented incident from Japan’s review before the UN Committee Against Torture in Geneva in May 2013, triggered while he was pushing back against criticism that Japan’s confession-heavy interrogations were “like the Middle Ages.” The Iizuka case dates back to 1992; the death sentence was finalized in 2006 and carried out in 2008, and requests for a retrial have continued since, centered on questions about the reliability of the DNA evidence. Asao Kurebayashi was a real Shizuoka Prefectural Police detective from the Showa era whose work turned multiple death and life sentences into later-overturned wrongful convictions. All of these are well-documented, repeatedly reported facts cited as evidence of structural problems in Japan’s justice system — but the thread title’s specific claim that Japan ranks “4th in the world” cites no source and was never verified within the thread itself, something readers should be careful not to take at face value. Alongside criticism of the system itself, this discussion was also notable for raising the view that the deeper issue is public misunderstanding of the presumption of innocence.

  • Japan vs. New Zealand: 5ch Reacts to Haruka Fukuhara Watching From the Stands — ‘She Looks So Happy’

On October 5, 2026, the Kirin Cup match between Japan and New Zealand kicked off at 19:30 at the National Stadium. The starting lineup included captain Ritsu Doan, Daichi Kamada, Ayase Ueda, Takefusa Kubo, and Ayumu Seko, among others. On a 5ch thread (Hello! Project board), alongside tactical talk about formations, New Zealand’s size advantage, and how to defend against their tall, long-ball-heavy style, much of the attention centered on the fact that actress Haruka Fukuhara — wife of Takefusa Kubo — was watching from the stands. After the match, news photos of Fukuhara watching the game were posted in the thread, and the discussion spread to cover both the action on the pitch and the celebrity in the crowd.

Replying to Re: #101: It's a FIFA-sanctioned match, so you'd think they'd bring their full squad

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Kirin Cup is an invitational tournament hosted by the Japan Football Association, usually held at venues like the National Stadium, which in principle should give the host nation an edge in matchups. Even so, commenters in the thread pointed out that Japan hasn’t won the title in 15 years — an easily overlooked fact showing that home-turf advantage hasn’t necessarily translated into results. Also worth noting, as poster #105 mentioned, is that while this match counted as an official FIFA fixture, New Zealand reportedly didn’t field their strongest lineup, suggesting a somewhat friendly-match level of intensity on their side. The thread itself was posted on a Hello! Project (idol) board, which explains why so much of the conversation gravitated toward actress Haruka Fukuhara — wife of Takefusa Kubo — watching from the stands rather than staying strictly on-pitch. That mix of genuine interest in the match itself and lighter, celebrity-watching chatter is what defines the character of this thread.

  • Yoshihiro Togashi Refuses All Deadline Work Citing Health Issues, Will Prioritize Hunter x Hunter Manuscript

On October 5, Hunter x Hunter creator Yoshihiro Togashi announced on his X account that, citing mental and physical health issues, he will turn down all future work requests that come with deadlines and prioritize writing the Hunter x Hunter manuscript instead. The series, which began serialization in 1998, has sold over 100 million copies in total (including digital editions) and remains hugely popular, but it’s also well known for its repeated long hiatuses. On 5channel, many questioned the premise of the announcement itself, asking “Was he even doing other deadline work to begin with?”, while others compared him to manga artists like Takehiko Inoue and Kazushi Hagiwara, whose own long-running series have similarly stalled out.

Yoshihiro Togashi, creator of the manga Hunter x Hunter, updated his X account on the 5th to announce that, due to mental and physical health issues, he will turn down all future work requests that come with deadlines and instead prioritize producing his own manuscript.

On X, he wrote: “With my mental and physical health issues piling up, after I finish the request I’m currently handling, I’ve decided to turn down all future work requests that have deadlines and prioritize producing my own manuscript. I’ll post an update here once manuscript production resumes.”

Hunter x Hunter, which began serialization in 1998, is an adventure fantasy following the boy Gon as he journeys with friends including his best friend Killua. The story is currently in the “Dark Continent Arc” (Succession War Arc), depicting the clashing agendas of characters like Kurapika and members of the Phantom Troupe aboard a ship bound for an uncharted continent. The series has sold over 100 million copies in total (including digital editions).

    Background and points of debate

Togashi is known for having repeatedly taken long hiatuses from Hunter x Hunter, so the stated policy of “prioritizing manuscript work” itself echoes his past hiatus announcements. Where opinions split on the thread was over the premise of the announcement itself — whether he had actually been taking on other deadline work besides HxH over the past decade or so. While there are related projects like game adaptations and merchandise, it’s unclear from this announcement whether he personally had been taking on individual deadline jobs. Many commenters also drew comparisons to artists like Takehiko Inoue and Kazushi Hagiwara, whose long-running series have similarly stalled, though the circumstances behind each artist’s hiatus differ and can’t simply be equated. In the end, readers’ real concern is whether the “Dark Continent Arc” will actually be completed once serialization resumes — but for now, the only confirmed fact is this change in policy.

  • Concerns Rise Over GTA6’s Quality — 5ch Fires Back: ‘It’ll Sell 50 Million in Week One, So It’s Fine’

On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, concerns have been raised about whether GTA6’s quality will hold up. Reasons cited include it being the first title since key developers left the studio, repeated delays, a surprisingly low-key marketing push, and negative reactions to leaked gameplay footage. On the other hand, market research reports were also cited, noting that pre-orders alone reportedly brought in about $180 million across the five major markets, with worldwide launch-week sales projected at $3.3–5.2 billion. Opinions split between optimists who say sales figures alone put any worries to rest, and cautious posters who kept pointing to past big-budget games that flopped despite high expectations, refusing to let go of their quality concerns.

Sales-wise it's fine since it'll move 50 million units in week one, but is the quality actually going to hold up?
    2AnonymousOct 5, 2026 17:51
First title since key developers left
    Repeated delays
    Surprisingly low-key marketing
Latest footage turned out to be a misleading trailer (PV sagi)
Tons of leaked gameplay videos, almost universally panned
    No online mode at launch
Retail copies are just a code in a box (no disc)

It probably won't be a total trainwreck, but the quality seems like it'll fall way short of expectations — personally I've got nothing but worry.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

GTA6 is in a situation where “is it really going to be okay?” concerns come easily before release, thanks to the departure of key developers, repeated delays, a marketing push that’s still low-key this close to launch, and poor reactions to leaked gameplay footage. On the other hand, the market research report cited in post 60 notes that pre-orders alone brought in about $180 million across the five major US and European markets, with worldwide cumulative launch-week sales projected at $3.3–5.2 billion. The ’50 million units’ figure is a back-calculation from that estimate, and as posts 51 and 70 point out, some are questioning the basis for the calculation and whether there’s any precedent for it — so it’s worth noting this isn’t a confirmed number. The thread split between the camp saying ‘if the sales are there, quality is secondary’ and the camp pointing to past cases like Anthem, Cyberpunk 2077, and Dragon’s Dogma 2, where hype outran the final product and fans ended up disappointed — with past big-budget game flops being cited again and again.

  • Unauthorized access at Yakiniku King leaks data on 10.78 million people — passwords confirmed unaffected

Monogatari Corporation, which operates the yakiniku (Japanese BBQ) chain Yakiniku King, announced on October 5, 2026 that its official app’s member management system had suffered unauthorized access by a third party, leaking information on 10,788,963 members. With the app’s total registered users at 10,808,784, that means almost everyone who ever signed up was affected — a massive breach. The leaked data includes membership numbers, names, email addresses, and phone numbers; according to the company, login passwords, birth dates, and payment information were not included. On 5ch, speculation that “passwords must have leaked too” spread immediately after the announcement, but was quickly corrected by posters quoting the official statement directly, and the thread then veered off into a tangential debate about registering “throwaway accounts” on LINE.

As long as the card company itself isn't breached, you're mostly okay

Any system in this day and age that still stores full card numbers is garbage

Background and Key Points of This Story

The data leaked this time belongs to Yakiniku King’s official app membership system. The company states it doesn’t hold credit card information, so that wasn’t exposed, and that passwords, birth dates, and store usage history (including accumulated points) also weren’t leaked. Still, the leaked membership numbers, names, email addresses, and phone numbers could on their own be used as material for targeted phishing or impersonation, so caution is warranted. On the thread, speculation that “even the passwords leaked” spread right after the announcement, but was corrected early on by posters quoting the official statement directly. Some also argued that “registering through a LINE throwaway account would have prevented this,” but since LINE generally allows only one account per phone number, opinions remained split on how effective that countermeasure would really be.

  • Are Today’s 30-Somethings “Childish”? 5ch Reacts to the Generation Gap: “We’re Doomed”

A post on 5ch’s “Live Commentary General” board claiming that today’s 30-somethings have childish hobbies sparked a debate. Posters painted a picture of a generation priced out of cars, brand-name goods, and overseas trips, turning instead to capsule-toy machines (gachapon) and anime and video games — and many compared them to 30-somethings from 20 to 30 years ago. Others pushed back, arguing that the earlier generation’s “grown-up” image wasn’t just about having more money, but also about Showa-era social norms. In the end, the thread never settled on whether the “childishness” comes down to economics or a shift in values.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The thread’s framing — “30-somethings priced out of cars, brand-name goods, and overseas trips” — reflects wage stagnation and shrinking disposable income since the 1990s. The trend of high-end tenants pulling out of department stores and shopping centers like Marui, replaced by dedicated gachapon (capsule toy) shops, is a real phenomenon happening across Japan in recent years, matching what posters describe firsthand. Where opinions diverged was over whether the “childishness” stems from economic constraints or from the erosion of Showa-era social norms. Some pointed out that the “grown-up” image of 30-somethings in the past may have had less to do with personal maturity than with a society that placed heavy weight on appearances and social standing — a reminder to be cautious about simple generational comparisons. The view on anime and games is similarly split: once a hobby people felt they had to hide, it’s now mainstream among younger people, while the gaze directed at middle-aged and older men remains harsh — and that asymmetry is where the real disagreement lies.

  • Blog Update Gap Between Juice=Juice and Tsubaki Factory Sparks 5ch Debate: ‘Liars Use Numbers’

Among Hello! Project groups Juice=Juice and Tsubaki Factory, the number of times members updated their official blogs in September became a hot topic on 5ch. Specific figures like “Ebata: 28, Hayashi: 29” set the thread off — some posters sniped, “And people still want them headlining Budokan after this?” while others pushed back with “Tsubaki Factory doesn’t get announcements or hint-dropping gigs, so there’s nothing to blog about.” Opinion split between those who read the gap as a difference in personal motivation and those who saw it as a structural issue of workload and treatment, and the back half of the thread spiraled into comparing Instagram follower counts.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Official blogs for Hello! Project groups are a key channel for members to share personal updates and glimpses of their work, and update frequency often gets read by fans as a gauge of popularity or motivation. This time, specific September update counts (Ebata with 28, Hayashi with 29, and so on) sparked the debate, with views split between tying the gap to personal motivation or to differences in agency treatment, versus a structural explanation — that Tsubaki Factory simply has less promotional material to blog about in the first place. The Instagram follower comparisons raised later in the thread were also cited as a popularity gauge, but follower counts don’t necessarily track directly with real popularity or sales, so these social-media metrics should be read with some caution. Note that posts amounting to unfounded personal attacks on specific members have been excluded from this article.

  • Which celebrities have vanished from TV lately? 5ch: “It’s sad seeing Hideki Takahashi doing shopping-channel ads”

A thread titled “Talents who’ve completely disappeared from TV” popped up on 5ch’s Hello! Project board, with names like Rola, Angerme, and Yakkun Sakurazuka coming up one after another. The discussion centered on how former stars have vanished from terrestrial TV while shifting their careers to CS/BS satellite shopping channels, citing Hideki Takahashi and the married couple Hayato Tani and Kikko Matsuoka as specific examples. For posts like the one about Panther Ogata — “He even had his own show on NHK, but then he just disappeared” — opinion was split on whether it came down to his own career choices or circumstances on the network’s side.

Background and key points of this discussion

Many of the celebrities people feel have “disappeared lately” haven’t actually retired or gone on hiatus — more often, they’ve simply shifted from terrestrial TV to shopping channels, cable TV, or regional-based work. Within the thread, names like Hideki Takahashi and the couple Hayato Tani and Kikko Matsuoka came up in connection with shopping channels, while Dainoji was cited as an example of a duo that relocated to Fukuoka to do regional revitalization work. On the other hand, with cases like Panther Ogata, it’s unclear whether the sudden drop in TV appearances comes down to his own choice to scale back or to circumstances on the network’s side, and opinions in the thread were split, with some pushing back that it “sounds like anti-fan bitterness.” Readers should be cautious about taking posts that flatly declare someone “blacklisted” at face value, since they’re mixed in with posts that simply attribute it to generational turnover or a shift in career focus.

  • Kitami City Hikes Trash Bags to ¥135 Each Amid ¥3 Billion Funding Gap — 5ch: ‘They Had as Many Libraries as Sapporo’

Starting in October, the city of Kitami in Hokkaido raised the price of its designated 45-liter trash bags to 135 yen each. The city, known for onions and yakiniku (grilled meat), had a population of over 120,000 after merging with three towns in 2006, but has since shrunk to around 106,000. Kitami is pushing ahead with cuts to public facilities and the closure of nursery schools, aiming to achieve a fiscal effect of 3 billion yen by next fiscal year. On 5ch, comments ranged from criticism of high public-employee salaries to skepticism about whether municipal mergers and consolidation actually work, and even debate over whether to accept more foreign residents.

In Kitami, Hokkaido, which is facing a fiscal crisis, 45-liter trash bags now cost 135 yen each as of this month. At the same time, the city is ramping up new revenue-generating efforts in a push toward fiscal health.

A funding shortfall of over 3 billion yen every year

Kitami is known as a town of onions and yakiniku. When it was formed by merging with three towns in 2006, its population topped 120,000 — but it has since declined to around 106,000.

Or a final disposal site for nuclear waste (ry (ry = trailing off, a common 5ch abbreviation meaning 'and so on, you know the rest')

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Kitami merged with the three towns of Tanno, Tokoro, and Rubeshibe in 2006, pushing its population above 120,000 — but commenters in the thread point out that after the merger, the number of public facilities grew to a level out of proportion with the city’s size, leaving it with as many libraries as Sapporo, a city with more than ten times its population. Yubari City, which was designated a fiscal reconstruction entity in 2007, is often cited for context as a precedent among municipalities grappling with population decline and worsening finances. Readers may easily get the wrong impression here: charging for designated trash bags is already standard practice in many municipalities across Japan, not some unusual measure unique to Kitami. The thread was split over whether freezing public employee salaries and municipal mergers actually work, and the discussion also branched into the separate question of whether to accept more foreign residents.

On the 5ch Geinou Sports Hōchi+ thread, some posters said they’d never heard of this ordering trick and wanted to try it themselves, while others said they didn’t notice any difference in taste, and still others pointed out differences in flavor and vegetable sourcing between Gyoza no Ohsho and the similarly named “Osaka Ohsho” chain — sparking a wider debate about the “Ohsho” chains.

Hanawa relishes gyoza ordered with a “secret technique” at Gyoza no Ohsho → reactions include “I didn’t know that” and “now I want to go”

Comedian Hanawa updated his official YouTube channel on September 21, placing a “secret order” for the gyoza — the signature dish of the Chinese restaurant chain Gyoza no Ohsho — and the video has been drawing a lot of attention.

The video shows him enjoying lunch at Gyoza no Ohsho together with his staff member Harley.

Surprisingly they're picky about using domestic veggies, so I use it a lot for takeout
But the place feels greasy and dirty so I never want to eat in-store

Manshu's gyoza (rival chain Gyoza no Manshu) is way better
Ohsho isn't even in the conversation

    Wait, there's a double-sided-sear option?

    Nobody told me that!

I don't go to Ohsho because their fried rice isn't very good.

    Not tasty
The tenshin-don (crab-omelet rice bowl) wasn't good either, just greasy

Tried the double-sided sear at home but had no idea what was supposed to be better about it. Doesn't make it worse or better either way
    26AnonymousOct 5, 2026 17:48
Please save the extra-effort orders for when it's not packed, it's a pain for staff during the rush
    27AnonymousOct 5, 2026 17:48
You'd imagine double-sided searing makes both sides crispy and crunchy — sounds great — but when you actually try it, the top barely touches the pan, so the texture barely changes. Not really worth doing
    28AnonymousOct 5, 2026 17:50
I just want to go back to drinking a beer at the counter while watching some veteran old guy in a worn-out uniform silently folding gyoza

Guys think this works everywhere just because it's a chain thing, so they try ordering it at mom-and-pop Chinese places too

Hidakaya, Marugen, and Tadokoro are all on an aggressive store-opening spree.
Hidakaya's still just a regional chain for now, but it'll probably go national soon.

I want to order "well-done" or "double-sided sear" but
ugh, I hate the thought of the staff thinking 'great, a pain-in-the-ass customer just walked in'

On "Tamori Club," they brought on a Chinese celebrity for a segment asking "Does Ohsho's order lingo actually work in Chinese?" — and it led to a shocking revelation.
According to the Chinese celebrity, "kōteru ryanga" or "ryanga kōteru" actually just means a single plate with two gyoza on it in real Chinese.
And the phrase often heard at Ohsho for ordering two servings as two separate plates — "ryanga ryante kōteru" or "kōteru ryanga ryante" — would, in actual Chinese, mean "two plates, each with two gyoza on it."
The Ohsho store manager was left speechless, but Tamori smoothly wrapped it up with "Well, I guess that just means it's not Chinese — it's Ohsho-speak."
Ironically, it also seems to have reassured viewers that "there's never been a single Chinese person involved in running Ohsho, then or now."

Yeah, guess that tracks. Though at Ohsho that's the term for the double-sided sear order.

It was judo, actually. Did the oldest son join All Japan Pro Wrestling this year?

Background and key points of this discussion

“Ryōmen-yaki” (double-sided sear) and “yoku-yaki” (well-done) are long-known unofficial ordering options at Gyoza no Ohsho. Since they’re not on the official menu, how stores and staff respond varies. One fact that kept getting conflated in the thread and is easy to overlook: “Ohsho” (Gyoza no Ohsho, founded in Kyoto and run by Ohsho Food Service) and “Osaka Ohsho” (run by Eat&) are entirely separate companies with different ownership and capital, despite the similar names — which is exactly why opinions about taste and vegetable sourcing tend to get mixed up between the two. On vegetable origin labeling, posters also cited a report that Osaka Ohsho declined to answer a weekly magazine’s inquiry, hinting at interest in how transparent these chains are about sourcing. The thread’s opinions split over whether the double-sided sear genuinely makes the gyoza taste better — some felt a real difference, others noticed nothing at all. An episode from the TV show “Tamori Club” about ordering in Chinese also came up, with posters sharing the fun aside that Ohsho’s own term “kōteru ryanga” is used differently from how the phrase actually works in real Chinese.
