  • Giants Fall Short of Tigers, Settle for 2nd Place — 5ch: ‘Young Players Aren’t Developing At All’

The Giants couldn’t close the gap with the Tigers, even in their head-to-head matchups, and the thread already had a resigned mood of just locking down 2nd place, with posts like “Might as well root for the Tigers too, just to keep 2nd safe.” Talk then shifted to comparing Japanese players’ home run totals over the years, with posters venting that — aside from Okamoto — Oshima and Sasaki’s 8 homers are the team’s best this season, and grumbling that the young players simply aren’t developing.

    Background and Key Points

The Yomiuri Giants and Hanshin Tigers are Nippon Professional Baseball’s oldest and fiercest rivalry, dating to the 1936 founding of Japan’s first pro league; head-to-head results between them carry outsized weight in the standings and in fan psychology all season. In NPB’s Central League, though, “settling for 2nd” isn’t a dead end the way it would be in a league with only one playoff spot — the top three finishers advance to the Climax Series, and 2nd- or 3rd-place teams have gone on to win the Japan Series before, so a runner-up finish still keeps a title alive, just through a harder bracket. The homer numbers posters cited (Maru and Sakamoto putting up 18-27 a year through 2021-23, versus Oshima and Sasaki’s 8 this year) track the erosion of the Giants’ Japanese-player power core now that Okamoto Kazuma is carrying the load essentially alone.

The thread’s real fault line wasn’t optimism versus pessimism — nearly everyone conceded the pennant is out of reach — but where to place blame: the front office, for not drafting a college or corporate-league power hitter since 2010, versus the coaching staff, for promoting a manager up through the farm system without him developing anyone once in the majors.

What outside readers may miss is that the one comeback precedent posters invoked, the Giants erasing a Tigers lead via a season-ending sweep, is a real and famous NPB moment — not idle nostalgia — which is why even resigned fans keep half-mentioning it.

It's not the Fighters that are hated —
it's Shinjo and his Hokkaido-native fanboys that are hated

    Background and Key Points

The Pacific League is one of NPB’s two six-team circuits and, unlike the Central League, has used the designated hitter since 1975 — worth noting since Lotte’s win here was built on a leadoff bat (Fujiwara) and a reliable innings-eater (Jackson) rather than pitcher’s-spot maneuvering. The Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, meanwhile, are a franchise in transition: they left the Sapporo Dome for the new ES CON FIELD HOKKAIDO in 2023 and are managed by Tsuyoshi Shinjo, the flamboyant former star who dubbed himself “BIG BOSS.” Their mascot, Koropokkuru, is drawn from Ainu folklore tied to Hokkaido. SoftBank, invoked repeatedly here even though they weren’t playing, carries baggage from unproven 2018-era allegations that they used a scoreboard camera to steal signs — a grudge Pacific League rivals still bring up reflexively.

The thread didn’t really split over the Lotte-Fighters game itself, which was fairly one-sided; the actual disagreement was over the “one-man Reyes team” framing of the Fighters. Some posters ran with it as proof Shinjo’s roster-building has produced a hollow team propped up by one import bat, while others pushed back that this narrative is exaggerated or “made-up.”

What outside readers will likely miss is that the SoftBank sign-stealing jabs are a non sequitur — several posters themselves note “today’s opponent was the Marines,” flagging that the Hawks bashing is just reflexive rivalry noise carried over from other games, not commentary on this result.

    Re: #99
Replacing it every six months is pointless anyway, so I just keep using it while seething.

    Background and Key Points

Teflon and other PTFE non-stick coatings are inherently sacrificial: the slick surface is a thin polymer layer bonded to the pan’s base metal, and every use — especially at high heat — degrades it by microscopic amounts until food starts sticking, typically after months rather than years. Manufacturer manuals, including for budget lines and premium brands like Tefal (the French cookware maker sold in Japan), generally cap recommended stovetop temperatures and specifically warn against high heat on induction (IH) ranges, which can exceed the coating’s tolerance faster than gas ever could. In Japan, IH stoves are extremely common in apartments and rented housing, which makes this a live issue for many households, not a niche complaint.

The thread’s real fault line wasn’t “does Teflon wear out” — everyone agreed it does — but whether that’s a legitimate consumer grievance or a user-error problem. One camp treated six-month failure as an industry-wide defect worth mass-emailing manufacturers over; the other insisted the OP’s household, specifically a roommate who won’t stop using high heat, was the actual cause, and that any pan would suffer under those conditions.

What outsiders likely miss is that this isn’t really about Teflon’s quality at all — it’s a roommate-dynamics story wearing a product-complaint costume. The OP’s own posts reveal he can’t get the person actually damaging the pan to change behavior, so the anger gets redirected at the manufacturer instead. No one in the thread mentions the obvious fix posters gestured at only briefly: cast iron or carbon steel pans have no coating to lose, making them immune to exactly this failure mode, at the cost of needing seasoning and different care.

  • Chinese Video Site ‘bilibili’ Launches Global App in Japan — Android First

On August 19, Chinese video-sharing service “bilibili” began rolling out its global app for Android. The service stands out for letting users sign up without submitting ID verification documents, and the thread ranged from wariness toward Chinese-made apps and comparisons to Niconico’s decline, to practical speculation that YouTube’s tightened monetization rules could push long-form creators to migrate there.

Chinese video-sharing service “bilibili” announced via its official X account on August 19 that it has begun offering a global version of its app. Only the Android version is available so far, and it can be downloaded from Google Play in Japan as well. An iOS version is expected soon.

The company touted several features of the global version: access to videos from around the world, optimization for users in each country, and a simplified sign-up process that doesn’t require submitting identity verification documents. It says it will keep improving localization and adding features going forward.

The global version’s icon is the same pink as the existing app, but has a small globe mark in the upper left corner to distinguish it. Bug reports and feedback are handled through the official Discord server, and the company plans to expand to more countries over time.

Niconico, which was supposed to be the original, is honestly so lame.
Natsuno blew money on pointless stuff
while slacking on server upgrades and system improvements,

Long-form YouTube creators are pretty fed up right now, so if this becomes a place for them to migrate to, the timing might actually work out…
Since it costs no extra effort and there's zero downside, expect a wave of creators to just cross-post to both platforms while they wait and see.

From a creator's perspective, Japanese content has been stuck in its own "Galápagos" bubble, and impressions have been treated poorly on YouTube.
With AI translation and dubbing, views should climb at least among audiences with similar grammar like Korea, or across Asian regions with high cultural familiarity, boosting playcounts
(like how Japanese-language posts are booming overseas on X right now).
Since both impressions and payouts weight retention heavily, long-form creators are bound to be interested.

And since YouTube picked this exact moment to raise the monetization bar and shut the door on newcomers, new long-form creators will naturally just start out on bilibili instead.
bilibili was definitely timing this lol

    Re: #39
The monetization bar for new long-form creators just got twice as hard, and starting August 24 even existing creators face a downgrade where a click instantly counts as a view — which just tanks retention and squeezes revenue. So yeah, everyone's simply interested.
And thanks to TikTok, both creators and viewers stopped caring ages ago about whether a platform is Chinese lol

    Re: #72
TikTok apparently has over 40 million users in Japan lol.
What even is a "decent Japanese person" lmao

    Background and Key Points

bilibili isn’t a new entrant to Japan so much as a name Japanese anime and Vtuber fans have already known for over a decade. Founded in 2009 (originally as “Mikufans”), it built its identity on danmaku, the scrolling bullet-comment overlay that floats across the video — a format it borrowed directly from Niconico’s own commenting system, which launched a few years earlier. That lineage is exactly what post #24 gestures at: the “original” (Niconico) stagnating while the platform that copied its signature feature became a Nasdaq-listed giant with heavy anime licensing deals and, notably, investment from Sony. Domestically in China, bilibili operates under strict real-name registration law, which makes the global app’s ID-free signup a deliberate carve-out for overseas users rather than a loosening of its home-market policy — a distinction the thread never raises.

The thread doesn’t really disagree about facts; it splits on how much a Chinese app’s origin should matter anymore. One camp treats it as a security and censorship risk (the Tiananmen-date jokes, the “wumao” suspicion, calls to block it outright). The other side, exemplified by the TikTok comparison in #74, points out that with 40 million-plus Japanese users already on a Chinese-owned app, treating “Chinese-made” as disqualifying is no longer realistic. A secondary, more substantive split is whether creators will actually migrate — hinging on real, dated YouTube policy changes (tighter monetization thresholds, view-counting changes from August 24) that the posters cite but the article itself doesn’t independently verify.

A thread for what looks like a Sunday tradition on News VIP — the “Tenimyu Roleplay” thread — went up, and regular poster “Ego-chan” and the other posters had a blast catching up and trading illustrations.

The chat ranged from casual details like her height (154cm) and weight (45kg) to living in Aichi Prefecture and plans to attend a doujin (fan-made works) event in October. In the second half, things turned into posters drawing and showing off boy-character illustrations.

    Background and Key Points

Anonymous message boards on 5channel (5ch, the successor to the original 2channel) are organized into hundreds of themed “itaraban” boards, and News VIP (ニュース速報VIP) is one of the site’s oldest and most trafficked, prized for a chaotic, in-joke-heavy culture built around total anonymity. Crucially, VIP does not display poster IDs by default, so regulars cannot verify who is who from post to post — a structural quirk that has spawned “narikiri” (roleplay) threads, where a poster adopts a persistent persona and returns week after week to interact with the same crowd, essentially running an ongoing character rather than a one-off post. “Tenimyu” is fan shorthand for the Prince of Tennis Musical, a stage adaptation of the tennis manga/anime “The Prince of Tennis” that launched in 2003 and became a flagship of Japan’s “2.5-dimensional” musical theater boom, casting young idol-adjacent actors as the show’s teenage tennis players; it has a large, mostly female fanbase, which is the joke underpinning a male-dominated board hosting a “Tenimyu roleplay” ritual.

The thread doesn’t really argue over facts so much as it splits in tone: most posters treat Ego-chan’s return as a nostalgic, low-stakes hangout (fan art, teasing about her look), while a few push it toward flirtation and declarations of romantic interest, which she deliberately downgrades to “fellow member” status.

What outsiders will likely miss is that none of Ego-chan’s personal details — age, measurements, prefecture, even gender — can be confirmed on an ID-less board; the persona’s consistency across weeks is itself the performance, not verified biography.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (News VIP) thread “I’m Ego-chan, and Since It’s Sunday, Let’s Play Tenimyu Roleplay”.

  • Saint Seiya “Weakest Gold Saint” Debate — 5ch: “15 Hits? That’s Just Waiting for You to Surrender”

A claim that “Milo might be the weakest Gold Saint” in Saint Seiya sparked a lively debate on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G board.

Starting from whether it’s really fair that his Antares needs 15 hits to finish an enemy off, the thread spiraled into Death Mask’s fitness for the Underworld, Aiolos’s lack of named techniques, and even a “weakest four” theory covering Cancer, Pisces, Taurus, and Scorpio.

    1AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:14
So apparently he can't beat an enemy unless he lands 15 hits or something?
    6AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:17
"Guaranteed to kill after 15 hits" sounds strong on paper, but you'd die just as dead from 15 hits of Rozan Shouryuuha (Rising Dragon), too.

It's just Death Mask himself who's pathetic — every generation's Cancer Saint has been a genuinely strong character.

    Background and Key Points

Saint Seiya (known in the West as Knights of the Zodiac) is Masami Kurumada’s Weekly Shonen Jump series from 1986-1990, whose central conceit is that Athena’s strongest bodyguards, the twelve Gold Saints, are each modeled on a zodiac constellation and each guard one of the twelve astrological “houses” leading to her sanctuary. Milo is Scorpio, whose finishing move Scarlet Needle requires driving fifteen strikes into an opponent’s meridian points before the “Antares” kill-strike lands. Death Mask is Cancer, whose Sekishiki Meikaiha technique banishes a foe to a death-like dimension. Aiolos is Sagittarius, killed roughly a decade before the main story while shielding the infant Athena from his own treacherous master. Worth flagging for non-Japanese readers: although the Saints’ cosmology is nominally Greek, the manga freely folds in Shinto and Buddhist elements too, including Yomotsu Hirasaka, the mythic slope to the land of the dead from the Kojiki, and Shaka, whose name is simply the Buddha.

The thread wasn’t actually arguing about a power ranking; it split over whether traits that look like weaknesses (fifteen hits needed, an underworld-themed attack, no flashy named move) are real limitations or just restraint, mercy, or narrative flavor.

What’s easy to miss if you don’t follow the franchise: none of this reflects an official strength tier, and the “weakest Gold Saint” framing is fan speculation the manga never settles, further muddied by how later spin-offs like Soul of Gold have retconned Milo’s characterization into something closer to what several posters push back against here.

  • Mac or Makudo? NanG’s Great Abbreviation War Gets Stopped Cold by ‘Donki’

A casual thread on the Nandemo Jikkyo (NanG) board that started out swapping store-name abbreviations like “Famima” (FamilyMart), “Misudo” (Mister Donut), and “Donki” (Don Quijote) somehow snowballed into a full-blown Kanto-vs-Kansai showdown over “Mac” vs. “Makudo” — the two rival ways of shortening McDonald’s.

What began as a logical back-and-forth over whether “Mac” refers to the product or the store name soon heated up, spiraling into regional trash-talk with jabs like “Tokyo doesn’t even have a culture of its own.”

Tokyoites really do love their rankings, huh
They're the only ones in Japan who seem into rankings like this
People from every other prefecture don't seem nearly as interested

    Background and Key Points

McDonald’s has been in Japan since 1971, when its first store opened in Tokyo’s Ginza district, and the “Mac” versus “Makudo” divide is one of the most-cited examples in Japanese dialect studies of Kanto (Tokyo-centered) versus Kansai (Osaka-centered) speech patterns. Tokyo speakers clip words from the front (“Mac,” “Sutaba” for Starbucks), while Kansai speakers historically clipped differently, giving “Makudonarudo” as “Makudo.” NanG (Nandemo Jikkyo), the 5ch board this thread comes from, skews heavily toward Kansai-identified posters and baseball fandom, which is why Kanto-vs-Kansai flame wars are a recurring genre there rather than a one-off dispute. Don Quijote, referenced as the unanswerable finishing move, is unusual in that “Donki” isn’t a grassroots nickname at all — the company itself uses it in official branding and store signage, which is why no one in the thread could mount a counter-argument.

The actual fault line in the thread isn’t really Mac vs. Makudo as store names — nearly everyone agrees Kansai says Makudo for the restaurant. It’s whether that extends to product names, with posters splitting over whether “Big Mac” becomes “Big Makudo” in Kansai speech, and several arguing the product name stays “Mac” even for Kansai speakers who call the restaurant Makudo.

What the thread never establishes is any actual source for the claim that young Kansai speakers are abandoning “Makudo” for “Mac” — it’s asserted from post 25 onward and treated as settled, but no survey or citation is given, only anecdote about “geezers and grannies.”

  • “We Wanted to Feel That Sense of Unity”: Fukuoka Biker Gang Ditches Motorcycles (Wallets and All) Mid-Chase, Then Turns Themselves In

In Miyama, Fukuoka Prefecture, four men aged 18 to 19 were referred to prosecutors after repeatedly weaving through traffic and running red lights on motorcycles. When a patrol car gave chase, they abandoned their bikes—wallets and all—and fled on foot, but it later emerged that they turned themselves in to police, saying they “figured they’d give it back.” On 5ch, the discussion ranged from exasperation at the young men’s selfishness, to whether penalties should be toughened, to whether the responsibility for discipline lies with the family or the schools.

This footage was filmed in Miyama, Fukuoka Prefecture.

A motorcycle weaves back and forth, drifting into the oncoming lane. Another bike then appears, and together they ride straight through a red light at an intersection.

Four men aged 18 to 19 were referred to prosecutors on suspicion of this kind of reckless driving.

Rather than harsher penalties, it'd be better to write clear legal standards for measuring noise levels, and revise the law so police can force a stop—even by methods that risk a fatal accident—on people who ignore a stop order and try to flee.
Harsher punishment doesn't really deter crime.

    Re: #150
Evidence items generally get returned once the whole investigation wraps up and the sentence (or disposition) is finalized

    Background and Key Points

In Japan, gangs of young motorcyclists who weave through traffic and run lights are called bosozoku — a subculture that peaked at roughly 40,000 registered members nationwide in the early 1980s and has shrunk to a small fraction of that today as police crackdowns and an aging youth population thinned the ranks. Miyama is a quiet, semi-rural corner of Fukuoka Prefecture, not a nightlife district, which is part of why dashcam-style footage of bikes running a red light there drew attention. Because the four men are 18 or 19, they fall under Japan’s “specified juvenile” (tokutei shonen) category, created when the Diet lowered the age of adulthood to 18 in 2022 but kept a modified juvenile-law track for 18- and 19-year-olds — they can be named and tried more like adults than younger teens, yet the case still moves through prosecutors rather than an immediate criminal trial.

The thread’s real disagreement wasn’t over whether the riders were foolish — that was assumed — but over what would actually stop this behavior: posters calling for harsher sentences and confiscated bikes clashed with posters arguing that certainty of being caught, not severity of punishment, is what deters, with one reply noting that legalizing forcible stops requires harsher penalties to already be in place first. A second, separate fault line was whether this reflects failed parenting or a school system too afraid to discipline students.

What outside readers may not realize: abandoning wallets and turning themselves in doesn’t guarantee leniency, and as one poster noted, seized items are typically returned only after the case is fully resolved — turning yourself in speeds up processing, not necessarily the outcome.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (News Express+) thread “[Fukuoka] “Wanted to feel that sense of unity as we all rode wild together”—Bikers flee patrol car, ditch motorcycles with wallets still inside…turn themselves in, saying “I figured they’d give it back”.”

  • El Niño Forecast to Reach “Historic Strength” in Late 2026 — 5ch: “Supposed to Be a Cool Summer, But It’s Hot Again This Year”

El Niño — the ongoing pattern of above-average sea surface temperatures across the equatorial Pacific — is forecast to reach historic strength between fall and winter 2026.

On 5ch, users expressed confusion that despite El Niño years typically bringing cooler summers, hot days continued in western Japan and Tokyo this year, with some pointing to jet stream meandering as the cause.

El Niño continues to develop, and is forecast to reach historic strength in the latter half of 2026

El Niño is a phenomenon in which sea surface temperatures remain higher than average across a band of the equatorial Pacific stretching from near the International Date Line to the coast of South America, and it causes extreme weather worldwide, including in Japan.

El Niño conditions have persisted since spring 2026, and are forecast to reach historic strength from fall into winter.

Why not just drain the gas out of the South Kanto gas field and fill it with water instead?

    Background and Key Points

El Niño refers to a periodic warming of surface waters across the equatorial Pacific, from around the International Date Line to the coast of South America; it’s tracked by agencies like Japan’s Meteorological Agency and NOAA because the shift in ocean heat reliably distorts atmospheric circulation worldwide. In Japan’s seasonal folklore, an El Niño year is supposed to mean a cool, rainy summer (Japan gets less of the Pacific High’s push) and a mild winter, a rule of thumb many older posters grew up hearing on the news. The current event has been building since spring 2026 and is forecast to peak at “historic” intensity by winter, meaning the textbook effects should, in theory, be more pronounced than usual this year.

What the thread actually disagreed about wasn’t whether El Niño is happening, but why the “cool summer” didn’t show up as expected: some posters blamed jet stream meandering (a wavier, more erratic polar jet that can trap heat domes over specific regions even during a cooling pattern) for western Japan’s brutal heat, while others pointed to eastern Japan feeling comparatively mild, with fewer nights failing to drop below 25°C, as evidence the pattern was working as advertised just regionally.

What’s easy to miss is that El Niño’s textbook effects are statistical tendencies, not guarantees, and they’re increasingly running on top of a warmer baseline climate — so the “cool summer” comparison itself is misleading when the reference point is decades of general warming rather than El Niño years alone. No one in the thread mentioned that Japan’s cool-summer/mild-winter association with El Niño is itself a simplification; the actual regional effects vary considerably by which ocean basin and jet stream configuration dominate in a given year.

  • Is “Material Desire” What Gets NEETs Back to Work? 5ch: “I’m Working Now So I Can Relax Sooner”

A thread titled “I think material desire is what drives people out of NEET life” took off on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” (Anything-Goes Live) board. Some posters said they started working because they wanted games or other things, while others pointed to the need for approval, the drive to reach FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) for peace of mind, or simply the desire to become somebody — the takeaway being that everyone’s motivation to work is different.

Take it further and you start abstracting into questions like "what is functional beauty" or "what is consciousness," and the gadget itself stops mattering at all.
    35AnonymousAug 23, 2026 18:01
Also, when your life is idle and low on stimulation, your thinking gets more abstract and you stop caring about material things.
    36AnonymousAug 23, 2026 18:02
    Re: #35
I wanted stimulation so badly that I craved new things —
that's part of why I'm working.
    54AnonymousAug 23, 2026 18:12
What do people who work regular jobs think of those who earn more for less effort than them?
    63AnonymousAug 23, 2026 18:16
    Re: #54
There are just people like that, that's all.
That's the difference between me and NEETs who justify not working by constantly comparing themselves to others.
    64AnonymousAug 23, 2026 18:19
    Re: #54
Just because someone else earns more with less effort than me doesn't mean I get to skip working.
Higher-paying jobs come with heavier responsibility to match, so I think it matters more whether you've found an environment that suits you.

    Re: #54
You're working for the things you want — what does it have to do with anyone else?
    72AnonymousAug 23, 2026 18:28
From there I start thinking I have no talent for earning money, so I should live with less material desire — but if you can still believe in your own money-earning talent even after comparing yourself to others, why is that?
    73AnonymousAug 23, 2026 18:29
    Re: #72
    What are you even saying?
    82AnonymousAug 23, 2026 18:39
    Re: #73
No, like — you've seen cases where someone with lower academic ability tries hard but their grades don't improve, so they lose motivation to study, right?
I sometimes wonder whether people who aren't cut out for earning money should even have material desire in the first place.
Something like — it's better not to make what you're not good at your own measure of value.
    86AnonymousAug 23, 2026 18:41
    Re: #82
So what even is "talent for earning money" in the first place?
You can just work a normal job as an employee.
Nobody said you have to satisfy material desires beyond your means.
    88AnonymousAug 23, 2026 18:44
By Re: #82's standard, how much would you need to make a month to count as having talent for earning money?
    84AnonymousAug 23, 2026 18:39
I've got no material desire and don't want to work,
so I'm putting almost my entire paycheck into investments and aiming for FIRE.
    92AnonymousAug 23, 2026 18:50
    Re: #84
Earning enough through investing right now to get through the rest of your life without working —
that's a move steeped in material desire, backed by solid calculations of what the rest of your life will cost.
    98AnonymousAug 23, 2026 18:53
    Re: #92
Would you really call that material desire? I feel like material desire is specifically about wanting things.
What Re: #84 has is more like a desire to take it easy, maybe.
    96AnonymousAug 23, 2026 18:51
    Re: #86
I don't really get what "material desire that fits your means" means,
but if that means just a bare-minimum standard of living,
then in some cases the motivation to work disappears too.
    Re: #88
It's not a hard number I have in mind, but for me —
something like earning 100,000 yen a month through struggle so intense you can't focus on anything else, never getting used to the job, and that situation never changing —
that's when I'd say someone has no talent for earning money.
    97AnonymousAug 23, 2026 18:52
    Re: #96
Isn't that just a sign the job itself isn't a good fit?
    102AnonymousAug 23, 2026 18:56
    Re: #96
    Same opinion as Re: #97.
There are a huge number of different jobs just among employee positions, so it'd be better to switch jobs.

    Background and Key Points

Japan’s NEET category (“Not in Employment, Education, or Training”) isn’t just slang — it’s a statistic the Cabinet Office and Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare have tracked since the early 2000s, originally covering ages 15–34, with numbers hovering in the mid-hundred-thousands for over a decade. The term overlaps heavily in public discourse with hikikomori (social withdrawal), and posts like #25’s image of a shut-in “wasting away” after their parents die are a direct, if unlabeled, reference to Japan’s “8050 problem” — aging parents in their 80s still housing and supporting children in their 50s who never entered the workforce, a crisis that becomes visible only when the parent dies or can no longer provide care. FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) and its “Lean FIRE” variant are imported Western finance-culture terms that have found a receptive audience in Japan’s low-wage, high-cost-of-living urban economy, explaining why several posters frame early retirement as their actual motivator.

The thread’s real fault line isn’t whether material desire matters, but whether it’s the only legitimate kind of desire — posts #84, #92, and #98 argue over whether wanting to stop working (via FIRE) even counts as “material desire,” or whether it’s a separate craving for ease that happens to require money. A second, sharper split is over method: can external pressure (cutting off a NEET’s support, as in #6) substitute for desire that has to come from inside, as #12, #25, and #28 insist it can’t.

What the thread never spells out is why this matters publicly: yami baito, the shady gig-work scams mentioned in passing at #10, have become a genuine crime wave in Japan since around 2022, with anonymous social-media recruiters pulling underemployed or desperate young people into robbery and fraud rings — the dark mirror of the “material desire” the thread otherwise treats lightly.
