  • “Parasol Guys” OK for Marriage-Hunting Dates? Over 90% of Women Say “Good Impression” or “Fine With It”

A survey by IBJ, which operates a matchmaking app, found that over 90% of women said men using parasols on dates during a heatwave left either a “good impression” or was something they’d “tolerate.” Meanwhile, 74% of women said their motivation for marriage-hunting itself drops on extremely hot days. On 5ch, reactions to the results were mixed — some posters were positive about “parasol guys,” while others pushed back with comments like “I just can’t stand the look” — revealing a divide in attitudes across generations, regions, and genders.

How do you all feel about men who carry a parasol on a date during a heatwave?

A survey conducted by “IBJ Matching App Lab,” run by IBJ Co., Ltd. (Shinjuku, Tokyo), revealed that over 90% of women responded that a man using a parasol on a date left a “good impression” or was something they’d “tolerate.”

The survey also highlighted a gap in attitudes between men and women when it comes to summer marriage-hunting, with 74% of women saying their motivation drops on extremely hot days.

    Background and Talking Points

The topic of “parasol guys” has come up more often in recent years alongside growing awareness of heatwave and UV protection. That said, it’s worth noting this survey was published by IBJ itself, a company that runs a dating/marriage-hunting app — so it comes from a business with a stake in the subject. It’s also worth flagging that “good impression” and “tolerate” are actually two different reactions, even though they’re lumped together as “over 90%.” In the thread, some men expressed discomfort with the idea of carrying a parasol, while women tended to view it more favorably as a heat-countermeasure — highlighting a gender gap in perception. Some posters noted that in urban areas, men using parasols is already unremarkable, pointing to differences by generation and region as well.

  • Honda and Nissan Team Up on ‘Car Brains’ to Counter US and Chinese EV Upstarts — 5ch: ‘That’s an Alliance of Losers’

Reports say Honda and Nissan are moving to collaborate on the basic software (OS) that will serve as the “brain” of next-generation vehicles. The two companies previously explored a full business merger before it fell through, so this time they’re limiting cooperation to the software-defined vehicle (SDV) space. The aim is to counter the rise of upstart EV makers in the US and China, but on 5ch the news drew harsh assessments like “an alliance of losers,” technical skepticism over whether a common OS is even feasible given how much vehicle architectures differ by platform, and conflicting views on the two companies’ financial performance.

Honda and Nissan’s collaboration plan is now moving forward. After two years of twists and turns, the two automakers have chosen the next-generation “software-defined vehicle” (SDV) field as their starting point. By pooling resources, they aim to counter the rise of upstart electric vehicle (EV) makers.

The two companies are expected to formally agree and announce the deal as early as the 31st. This marks the first time Japanese automakers have joined forces in a core SDV area such as basic software (OS).

SDVs improve functionality through software updates, much like smartphones…(continues in the paid edition, 932 characters remaining)

    Re: #256
The "OS" being talked about here is a vehicle OS to begin with —
it's a level above things like Linux, not the OS running inside individual ECUs.
Anyone going on about real-time OS here is completely missing the point.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

SDV (software-defined vehicle) refers to a design where a car’s functions improve through software updates, much like a smartphone, with the basic software (OS) and the electronic/electrical (EE) architecture serving as the key. Toyota has already developed its own OS, “Arene,” so even among Japanese automakers there’s no unified approach. In the thread, technical skepticism stood out over whether a common OS can realistically be built from scratch when vehicle architectures differ by platform, alongside conflicting assessments of Honda’s and Nissan’s financial results. It’s also worth noting that “OS” means two different things here — a real-time OS that controls individual components versus a vehicle OS that oversees the whole car — and that mix-up fueled some of the thread’s talking-past-each-other. Chinese EV giants like BYD also drew scrutiny over financial concerns lurking behind their rapid expansion, so who’s actually ahead isn’t a simple call.

    Re: #99
    Japan might actually have more.
Things like net cafe refugees (people effectively living in internet cafes) don't even get counted as homeless.
    113AnonymousAug 30, 2026 16:47
    Re: #101
Net cafe refugees are just something TV likes to sensationalize — in reality there's hardly anyone like that. If you've got that kind of money, you could just rent a cheap apartment.
    120AnonymousAug 30, 2026 16:53
    Re: #113
Do you seriously think money alone is enough to rent an apartment?

    Re: #113
They can't afford the deposit and key money (upfront non-refundable fees required to rent in Japan). On top of that, no guarantor either.
Working day-labor or temp jobs, their pay barely covers living costs, so they can't save up enough for the deposit and key money.
Do the math on a net cafe and it comes to about ¥60,000 a month, including breakfast, drinks, showers, internet, the NHK fee, and cleaning.

But once Bhutan got connected to the internet and people could see how other countries were living, its happiness score plummeted.

Bhutan's king maxed out his likability with his personality when he visited Japan, so hopefully that helps their happiness recover somehow.
The garbage media that basically ignored the Bhutanese king's visit to Japan is a cancer on this country.
    244AnonymousAug 30, 2026 18:47
    Re: #202
This is basically the answer on happiness.
The more people who feel a big sense of inequality, the lower happiness drops.
And that "inequality" isn't really about money — a big part of it comes down to whether you feel connected to anyone.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

According to National Police Agency statistics, Japan’s homicide rate sits at its lowest level since WWII, and the mismatch between the gut feeling that “public safety is worsening” and the actual statistical trend is a recurring point of debate — the same split showed up in this thread. At the same time, Japan consistently ranks around 50th in the UN’s World Happiness Report each year, and the fact that economic security and subjective happiness don’t necessarily line up came up as a separate angle from the crime-rate argument. One thing readers might misread is that “kokugacha” (“country gacha,” or birth lottery) is slang for talking about the disparities created by which country you happen to be born into — Hiroyuki’s comment wasn’t meant as unconditional praise of Japan, but as an answer about one aspect of its relative safety. The thread did veer off into topics like immigration policy and other political tangents, but this article focuses specifically on reactions to the “kokugacha” remark itself.

  • Juice=Juice’s TV Appearance Blitz — 5ch: ‘The Goro Hiromi Collab Was the Biggest Hit’

Since the start of 2026, Juice=Juice’s TV appearances have surged, prompting a thread on 5ch’s Hello! Project board looking back at every show the group has appeared on from January through August. Topics range from variety shows like ‘Honoo no Challenger’ and ‘Omou Mai Mise,’ to the buzz from their CDTV appearance, the FNS Music Festival, a collaboration with veteran singer Goro Hiromi, and a slot at MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN 2026. At the same time, skeptical voices have pushed back, arguing ‘their agency is just paying to get them on air’ and ‘their Spotify listener numbers are actually dropping,’ leaving fans divided over what’s really driving the surge in exposure.

    Background and Points of Debate

Some in the thread view Juice=Juice as having recently inherited the kind of ‘face of Hello! Project’ TV exposure that Morning Musume. used to hold. Posters pointed to a timeline in which exposure surged after their March CDTV appearance, and cited specific programs such as the Goro Hiromi collaboration and their MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN 2026 appearance, while skeptical voices countered with claims like ‘their agency is paying to get them on air’ and ‘their Spotify play counts are actually falling.’ It’s worth noting that these claims about drawing power and contract arrangements remain fan speculation — the actual casting process and streaming figures aren’t backed by any published data. Some also pointed out that a similar dynamic once played out with Morning Musume., since how TV exposure gets distributed among Hello! Project groups has long been a recurring topic among fans.

  • WEST. Members Ryusei Fujii & Nozomu Kotaki to Leave the Group — 5ch: “LOL, Now It’s an All-Married-Guys Group”

On August 30, STARTO ENTERTAINMENT announced that Ryusei Fujii and Nozomu Kotaki will be leaving the seven-member group WEST. How the remaining five members will continue is “still under discussion,” and the group’s planned seven-member festival appearance has been cancelled. What caught the thread’s attention wasn’t so much the departure timeline as the surprising makeup behind it: four of the seven members are already married, and the two leaving are actually the unmarried, younger ones. Comments like “LOL, now it’s an all-married group” piled up, and the discussion branched into comparisons with the married/single status of other idol groups, plus casual chatter about who these members would correspond to in Nogizaka46.

    Background and Key Points

WEST., a seven-member group under STARTO ENTERTAINMENT (formerly Johnny’s Office), traces back to KANSAI Johnny’s Jr., formed in 2004, and debuted in 2014. Four of the seven members (Shigeoka, Hamada, Kamiyama, and Kiriyama) are already married, and if you include Nakama, who has been reported to have a girlfriend, that leaves Fujii and Kotaki as the only two who are single. In idol culture, the usual pattern is for a member to graduate or leave the group once they get married — but this time it’s the opposite: the two unmarried, younger members are the ones leaving, while the married members stay on, which is what drew the thread’s attention. The specific circumstances and timing of the departure have only been described as “under discussion,” and readers should keep in mind that the speculation on 5ch (about romance, marriage, etc.) has not been officially confirmed as fact.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[Entertainment] Surprise Announcement! WEST.’s Ryusei Fujii & Nozomu Kotaki to Leave — Whether the Remaining Five Will Continue Is “Under Discussion” … Seven-Member Festival Appearance Cancelled.”

  • GTA6’s Online Mode May Arrive 1-2 Years After Main Game Launch, US Media Reports

According to a report from Forbes, GTA6’s online component may not launch alongside the main game, but could arrive one to two years later instead. Developer Rockstar Games took a similar approach with the previous entry, GTA5, first polishing the standalone console version before rolling out the online mode and PC version afterward. The report sparked debate on 5ch’s hardware/industry (“geha”) board, pitting frustration over the PS5 version being locked at 30fps with no 4K support against hopes that the eventual PC version is the “real” release worth waiting for — with some mockingly dubbing the console version an “early access debug build.”

    Background and Key Points

GTA6 is a massive project reported to have taken around 13 years to develop, and its trailer had already surpassed 13 million views early on. This “online delayed” report is worth treating as speculation rooted in Rockstar’s track record with GTA5 — finishing the console version first, then rolling out the PC version and online features afterward — rather than an official announcement. Rockstar itself has not formally confirmed a release date or an online rollout schedule. Opinions on the thread split over how to weigh the PS5 version’s specs, locked at 30fps and capped at WQHD, pitting hardware frustration against those who saw it as just Rockstar’s usual development playbook. Reactions to the main trailer were similarly mixed, with some noting there’s little to talk about beyond the graphical improvements — reflecting a reception caught between anticipation and dissatisfaction.

  • Gaming PCs — ‘Too High a Barrier to Get Into Now’? 5ch Erupts Over Pricing

On a gaming hardware industry board, a debate broke out over how high the barrier to entry for gaming PCs has become. It started with a post claiming ‘it’s way too much of a hurdle to get into PC gaming now,’ which snowballed into posters trading specific build lists and prices for a roughly 200,000-yen self-built PC, along with the specs needed to run GTA6 comfortably. Opinions split further over cost-performance compared to the Switch 2 and PS5, and whether 16GB of RAM is really enough, keeping the thread buzzing for hours.

Base OS usage: 4.5GB, Wilds left idling in the background: 6-8GB, browser with like 20 tabs open: 2-4GB, misc background standby stuff: 2GB.
Being real, that's my actual breakdown — even accounting for Wilds' terrible optimization, 16GB isn't exactly 'plenty,' but it's absolutely not 'not enough' either.
And technically that background standby stuff isn't even necessary, so drop it and you fit right in the budget.

Sure, thinking long-term I'd want 24GB, but that's a 'deal with it once things settle down' kind of thing.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Price arguments over gaming PCs crop up on 5ch regularly, and the sticking point almost always comes down to ‘what assumptions the estimate is built on.’ The roughly ¥170,000 self-build listed in the thread assumes 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD, prompting pushback that adding more storage or memory would push the real cost higher. There was also disagreement over the actual street price of the RX 9060 XT 16GB — self-build estimates like these tend to swing by tens of thousands of yen depending on the exact model and stock availability. Underlying all this is rising interest in what specs are needed to run the PC version of GTA6 comfortably, given its reported November 19 release date. The phrase ‘leather jacket guy,’ used to vent frustration over NVIDIA’s rising GPU prices, is a standard bit of sarcasm referencing the CEO’s trademark outfit, and it shows up constantly in PC-related threads on 5ch.

    The drama's at 1583 now
Hidenaga dies in 1591, so that's 8 more years to cover
Battle of Komaki-Nagakute → Tenshō earthquake → conquest of Shikoku → conquest of Kyushu → siege of Odawara → pacification of Ōshū
Guess it'll wrap up around there?

I'd like at least one episode devoted to the Toyotomi clan after Hidenaga's death
The screenwriter apparently said Hideyoshi and Hidenaga are like Nobita and Doraemon,
so maybe we get a senile, cornered Hideyoshi — after the invasion of Korea fails and he's purged Hidetsugu too — wandering Osaka Castle at night calling out for 'Koichiro' [Hidenaga's childhood name]
    213AnonymousAug 30, 2026 22:16
    Re: #118
It's fiction at the end of the day, so they'll probably just kill Hideyoshi off with a narration-only death (a common taiga-drama shortcut) and have Hidenaga effectively stand in for him
    133AnonymousAug 30, 2026 21:33
Does anyone remember how the old general died in the Sado arc of 'Hana no Keiji'?
'This head will earn you honor, take it' → 'His face is starting to burn, hurry and finish him!' → Keiji beheads him → 'Know that killing, too, can be mercy'

If they're going to fabricate stuff anyway, they should've given him a cool death like that
No one complains when the embellishment makes things better

Miyazaki Aoi and Yamaguchi Makiya's acting was great, but I burst out laughing when they held hands and dove at the end

Actually, the missionary Luís Fróis left a detailed written record of Katsuie's final moments

Basically, historical consultants only respond when screenwriters actually ask them something, explaining what really happened according to the record

In other words, if the writers or production team just decide to disregard history entirely, there's nothing the consultant can say about it

    Re: #218
Consultants can flag issues in the script, but if NHK says 'we can't do that,' there's nothing more they can do

    241AnonymousAug 30, 2026 22:25
    Re: #218
At the end of the day they're just hired help lol. All they can do is say their piece. The writers and director will hear them out, sure, but it ends with 'the final call is ours.'
They have zero real power lol. It's a bit different if you're the original novelist, but since dealing with an author threatening to walk is a hassle, that's probably why more recent taiga dramas have shifted to original screenplays lol

Hidenaga dies while Chacha's first son is still alive

The Hidetsugu incident happens after that child dies and Hideyori is born
so it's several years after Hidenaga's death

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

The main tower of Kitanosho Castle, where Shibata Katsuie made his last stand, is said to have had nine stories — larger in scale than Azuchi Castle. Regarding the deaths of Katsuie and Oichi, the missionary Luís Fróis left a detailed account, including an anecdote that an old woman was allowed to escape in order to give eyewitness testimony. Meanwhile, the role of historical consultants on taiga dramas is limited to flagging inaccuracies in the script — the decision of whether to actually act on their input rests with NHK and the screenwriters — so it isn’t unusual for a consultant to later reveal at a talk event, after broadcast, that “I objected to that scene.” Opinions in the thread split between those who found the staging acceptable (“fine if the embellishment works in a good direction”) and those who found leaping from a nine-story tower unnatural, as well as over the cast’s acting. On the historical side, some pointed out that Oichi didn’t actually commit seppuku, explaining that seppuku was samurai etiquette and that women of samurai households customarily took their own lives by other means. Underlying it all is a debate common to taiga dramas in general: how far to separate dramatic embellishment from historical fact in order to enjoy the show.

  • Michihiro Uchimura Sends Live Cheer to Sandwichman’s Mikio Date, Recovering from Stroke: “Go, Go, Date!”

On the August 30 broadcast of “24-Hour Television 49,” general host Michihiro Uchimura sent a live on-air cheer to Sandwichman’s Mikio Date, who is on hiatus due to a stroke, shouting “Go, go, Date! Everyone’s waiting for you!” Date has appeared alongside Uchimura on Nippon TV’s “THE Toppa File,” and was reportedly scheduled to take part in this segment as a member of the “Toppa Cheer Squad.” Reactions on 5ch were divided — some welcomed the shoutout, while others asked “Is it really appropriate to give a personal show of support on an unrelated program?” and “Shouldn’t disaster relief support come first?”

    August 30, 2026, 6:34 PM

Nippon TV’s annual summer charity program “24-Hour Television 49 — Love Saves the Earth —” was broadcast live on the 30th from Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo. General host Michihiro Uchimura of “Uchan Nanchan,” who has appeared alongside Sandwichman’s Mikio Date on the network’s “THE Toppa File,” sent a cheer to Date, who is currently on hiatus due to a stroke.

Backed by the “Toppa Cheer Squad,” Uchimura pumped his right fist and shouted, “Go, go, Hoshino! Fight, fight, Japan! Go, go, Date! Everyone’s waiting for you!”

Well, that's true for mild cases.
When I was hospitalized for a vascular bypass surgery, a stroke patient who got rushed in late at night was actually pretty mild on the case scale. But there was another patient in the ICU whose relatives
kept showing up in droves to cheer him on
and overhearing that from the next bed, I remember thinking, "yeah, this one's not gonna make it."

    Background and Points of Debate

Sandwichman’s Mikio Date has appeared alongside Michihiro Uchimura on Nippon TV’s “THE Toppa File,” but officially, no detailed information has been released about the severity of the condition behind his stroke-related hiatus. On the thread, posters traded guesses about whether it’s the type that leaves lasting after-effects or whether it was caught at a mild stage — but these remain baseless speculation either way. Opinions were also split over whether it’s appropriate to offer a personal well-wishing gesture within a charity fundraising program like 24-Hour Television, and over how that should be weighed against other causes like disaster relief support. Worth noting: this shoutout was an extension of a segment Uchimura and Date have long appeared in together, not a spur-of-the-moment idea.

  • Sony Offers a PS5 Discount If You Trade In Your PS4 at a Used Game Store — 5ch Calls It Unheard Of

A Sony campaign that gives you a discount coupon toward a PS5 purchase when you sell your PS4 at Furuichi, a used-book store chain under the GEO umbrella, has become a talking point on 5ch. The promotion runs until September 13, 2026, and the number of coupons available is capped. Many posters on the thread expressed surprise, saying they’d “never heard of a manufacturer telling people to sell their own hardware to a used shop,” and debate broke out over how this differs from trade-in programs run by Microsoft or smartphone makers, as well as how it squares with the fact that the current PS5 doesn’t even come with a disc drive included.

Sony's the one driving these kinds of promotions
The New Year's sale bundling a disc drive with the PS5 Digital Edition had a bunch of different stores running the exact same deal like they'd all coordinated it

And on top of that, they're pulling out of physical media entirely
Maybe optimize your own internal structure before dragging retailers into this
Probably some department's performance metrics that don't actually mean anything to the company as a whole
That's what you call sloppy, broken governance
    223AnonymousAug 30, 2026 13:16
    Re: #219

    227AnonymousAug 30, 2026 13:21
    Re: #223
That's a nasty way to do it
Once they drop discs entirely, a disc drive is genuinely just trash
    228AnonymousAug 30, 2026 13:21
Selling the disc drive separately has its own built-in contradictions

    Want to lower hardware cost
    Want to push digital
But disc drives have high margins, so sell them separately for extra profit
→ Plan backfires, drives pile up unsold → dump them in the New Year's sale
→ Still barely sell → force an end to packaged (disc) sales entirely
→ Retailers run a clearance sale on physical stock as they prep to ditch PlayStation

Basically, retailers gave up on this a long time ago
Big chain stores only went along with it because they need product variety and there are manufacturer incentives

    Re: #223

GEO has 2,000 stores, while the used-book chain Furuichi only has 170

If they're not using GEO — which could obviously reach way more people and make selling easier — that probably means either
GEO has given up on them, or the campaign is embarrassing enough (it's using the very secondhand system the fanboys used to trash) that they don't actually want much attention on it

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This campaign lets users sell their PS4 at Furuichi, a used-book store chain under the GEO umbrella, in exchange for a discount coupon (worth around ¥10,000) toward a PS5 purchase; it runs until September 13, 2026, and the number of available coupons is capped. Discussion on the thread centered on the point that “it’s unusual for a manufacturer to officially tell people to sell to a used shop,” with posters noting that trade-in programs from companies like Microsoft or Google are different in nature since those companies collect the old hardware themselves. Some brought up a similar past promotion for the PS Vita, pushing back on claims that this was an “industry first.” Another major point of contention was how this squares with the fact that the current PS5 doesn’t come with a disc drive included, meaning PS4 owners switching over would still need to buy one separately — a contradiction several commenters called out. Real trade-in price examples were also shared (around ¥15,000 for a PS4, about ¥19,000 for a Pro), with some reacting that the amounts were higher than expected. There were also posts referencing a past figure who made dismissive remarks about the secondhand market, mockingly contrasting that stance with this campaign, but since that person is difficult to identify with certainty, this article omits those references.
