  • Yuki Uchida (50) Stuns Fans With Her Youthful Looks — 5ch: ‘She Looks 29, Tops’

A thread on 5ch’s Hello! Project board lit up over the news that actress Yuki Uchida had turned 50. Commenters who saw the posted photos were floored, with reactions like “She looks 29, tops” and “Is it even allowed for a 50-year-old to be this cute?” The discussion soon spread to her relationship with her husband, actor Takashi Kashiwabara, comparisons with fellow celebrities born in 1975 like Ryoko Yonekura, Michiko Kichise, and Vivian Hsu, and eventually a broader look back at the shifting eras of idol history — from Yuki Uchida to Ryoko Hirosue, and on to Morning Musume and SPEED.

These days they'd just airbrush out every wrinkle on the armpits, waist, and stomach anyway.

    Background and Talking Points

Yuki Uchida, born in 1975, was one of the defining actresses and idols of the 1990s. She married actor Takashi Kashiwabara in 2001, and commenters spent plenty of time discussing their marriage. This round of photo comparisons picked up steam partly because several other female celebrities also born in 1975 are hitting 50 around the same time — though it’s worth noting that these “youthfulness” comparisons don’t really account for differences in photo editing or shooting conditions. The later discussion about the idol lineage moving from “Uchida Yuki to Hirosue Ryoko” and then into the group-idol era also tracks with the real history of the industry, as SPEED and Morning Musume rose to prominence in the late 1990s — so it’s more than just nostalgic chatter.

  • NHK’s ‘Close-Up Gendai’ Frugal-Living Video Raises Eyebrows: Empty Fridge, Awkward Onigiri Skills

A video posted by NHK’s ‘Close-Up Gendai’ (Closeup Gendai), following the frugal life of a man in his 20s, became a hot topic on 5channel. The segment showed him cooking for himself on a weekly food budget of just 6,000 yen (roughly $40), but viewers fixated less on the substance of his frugality than on details like his “nearly empty fridge” and his “awkward hand movements while shaping rice balls (onigiri).” The same episode also featured a dual-income couple with a combined take-home pay of 4.1 million yen (about $27,000) who said they’d given up on having kids — that story drew skepticism too, with commenters calling it “baffling” that a full-time employee in Tokyo would earn under 2 million yen ($13,000) a year. Discussion online centered on whether the show’s staging and reporting reflected real life.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

‘Close-Up Gendai’ is one of NHK’s flagship current-affairs programs, airing on weekday evenings, and it frequently tackles topics like inequality and poverty. What caught fire this time was a related video posted for social media, and what stands out is that thread commenters focused less on the segment’s main theme — tips for frugal living — and more on incidental details in the footage, like what was in the fridge or how awkwardly the subject shaped his rice balls. Opinions in the thread are split: some see a 6,000-yen weekly food budget as “way too extravagant,” while others argue that a breakdown of 200 yen for breakfast, 150 yen for lunch, and 500 yen for dinner is a perfectly achievable level. Commenters also raised doubts about the income and take-home-pay figures for a separate household featured in the same episode, but it’s worth noting all of this is speculation from thread participants — NHK itself has not officially addressed whether any of it was staged.

  • ASKA Steers Fans Toward Crypto Exchange — 5ch Reacts: ‘He’s Basically a Cult Leader at This Point’

Weekly Gendai reports that singer ASKA has been steering fans toward a Kyrgyzstan-based cryptocurrency exchange, sparking investment trouble among them. Reactions on 5ch to the latest report were split: many were coldly unsurprised (“a bit late for this,” “anyone who believed him is the fool”), while others voiced concern for the impact on longtime fans, and some even called for a CHAGE and ASKA reunion.

Chage, maybe — but ASKA's a lost cause.
He's even got a post-arrest song that ripped off The Police, and at this point he's just coasting on royalties from the old CHAGE and ASKA days.

    Background and points of debate

ASKA rose to fame as one half of CHAGE and ASKA starting in the 1980s, and his career and relationship with fans changed dramatically after his 2014 arrest for violating the Stimulants Control Act. This latest report centers on trouble that broke out among fans over a cryptocurrency ASKA himself promoted — it’s worth noting that no illegality has been established regarding the investment solicitation itself. Thread reactions split between a self-responsibility camp (“a bit late for this,” “anyone who fell for it is the fool”) and those worried that longtime fans’ devotion was being exploited. Posts noting that CHAGE and ASKA don’t even rank in the past 30 years’ karaoke popularity charts also highlighted the gap between their heyday and the current situation.

Japan-Russia relations have soured, so that's never happening.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Hello! Project previously held numerous solo concerts across East Asia, including in Hong Kong and Shanghai, but Hong Kong shows have become difficult in recent years due to worsening relations with China and restrictions on Japanese music there, and the Vladivostok concert was also canceled. This Taipei concert fills that gap in overseas shows, and the fact that a long-established local promoter has been brought on board led thread users to speculate that a relatively large venue is planned. At the same time, some questioned whether Taipei should really count as one of the ‘5ROOMS’ shows, and others pointed out that Angerme still draws bigger crowds, leaving opinion split on how much the group’s popularity has actually grown. Frustration also remains strong over the lack of a Sapporo date despite the group having two members from Hokkaido.

  • Syphilis Drug Shortage Won’t Ease Until Late Next Year — 5ch: ‘We Got Complacent Because It’s Curable Now’

Steruiz, the penicillin injection that’s the first-line treatment for syphilis, has been hit with both a voluntary recall over foreign-matter contamination and a manufacturing equipment breakdown — pushing the resumption of shipments back to the latter half of next year. Reported syphilis cases have surged from roughly 6,000 in 2020 to over 13,000 in 2025, and since mother-to-child transmission can cause stillbirth or “congenital syphilis,” the Japanese Society for Sexually Transmitted Infections is urging medical institutions to prioritize the drug for pregnant patients. On 5ch, some posters pointed to a structural problem — the drug’s low price makes the supply chain fragile — while many others veered off-topic, blaming the surge in infections on tourism policy or the nationality of specific visitors.

With syphilis infections holding at high levels, a shortage of the first-choice penicillin treatment continues. Production halted after equipment trouble at the manufacturer’s plant, among other causes, and resumption isn’t expected until the latter half of next year. As it’s also the only drug recommended for preventing mother-to-child transmission, the Japanese Society for Sexually Transmitted Infections had, as of the 9th, asked medical professionals to take steps such as prioritizing its use for pregnant women.

Syphilis, transmitted through sexual contact, began seeing a rise in reported cases around the time the COVID-19 pandemic wound down. From about 6,000 cases in 2020, the number topped 13,000 in 2025. If it crosses the placenta to the fetus, it can lead to stillbirth or premature birth, and there are also concerns about “congenital syphilis,” which causes abnormalities in a child’s nerves and bones.

Amid this, Pfizer’s treatment “Steruiz” was voluntarily recalled in July 2025 due to foreign-matter contamination. In November, a manufacturing equipment failure occurred as well. Preparing facilities and getting regulatory approval is taking time, and the company expects “shipments to resume around the latter half of next year.”

    Old drugs are priced cheap.
Not profitable, so few companies bother making them.
The second something goes wrong, supply dries up.

The drug-pricing system needs an overhaul.
Also some crackdown on cheap generic knockoffs that end up costing you more in the long run ("zoro," slang for copycat generic drugs).

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This supply crunch isn’t just an isolated glitch. The pharmaceutical industry has a persistent structural problem: drugs with prices kept artificially low aren’t profitable enough to justify upgrading manufacturing equipment or setting up backup production when something breaks — and some posters in the thread did flag exactly this. Many other posts, however, pinned the rise in infections on Japan’s tourism-promotion policy or on visitors of specific nationalities; but the article itself only reports the trend in case numbers and the state of the drug supply, offering no evidence that directly links any particular policy or nationality to the spread of infections. It’s also easy to overlook that while syphilis is treatable with antibiotics if caught early, infection during pregnancy can seriously harm the fetus — which is exactly why the medical society is calling for pregnant patients to get priority access, since this shortage risks narrowing that option just when it matters most.

  • Next Nintendo Direct’s ‘Win Conditions’ Spark Heated Debate on 5ch: ‘Ocarina of Time Alone Already Wins It’

Ahead of Nintendo’s next Nintendo Direct, a thread on 5ch’s hardware and industry (Gehan) board tried to pin down exactly what Nintendo would need to announce to “win.” Some posters felt the last Direct paled next to Sony’s recent State of Play, and many argued the “win line” should be the appearance of a major third-party title like GTA6, Genshin Impact, or a new Monster Hunter. Others countered that Nintendo had “already won” simply because the Ocarina of Time remake had been announced previously. The thread also veered into listing what would count as a “loss” instead.

Resident Evil already has an RE Code: Veronica remake confirmed, and they've already said Monster Hunter Wilds is getting a port, so…

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This kind of “Nintendo Direct vs. State of Play” rivalry framing is a recurring topic on the hardware and industry (Gehan) board, and it’s less about actual release schedules or official announcements than about which event “generated more hype.” The GTA6, new Monster Hunter, and Genshin Impact rumors raised in the thread are all unconfirmed speculation at best, and some posts cite unverifiable “a friend told me” sources, making them hard to substantiate. The Ocarina of Time remake, meanwhile, was announced on a separate prior occasion and should arguably be judged independently from this particular Direct — yet posters were quick to declare the outcome “already decided,” which shows how much these debates are shaped by pre-existing hype levels.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry board) thread “Let’s pin down exactly what Nintendo would need to announce in this Direct to count as a win.”

  • “Singles Have More Fun” Debate Splits Opinion, Exposes Rift With Married Folks

A thread on the Nandemo Jikkyou G (livegalileo) board split into opposing camps over a middle-aged single man’s claim that “being single is more fun.” Some mocked the poster, saying he’s “just rock bottom himself and trying to drag everyone else down to his level,” while several married posters admitted they envied singles who “can enjoy hobbies and days off without worrying about anyone else.” Others pushed back, arguing “that’s not something you’d trade a wife and kids for,” and warned that “being single leaves you screwed when you get sick or grow old.” The debate over what counts as happiness — and who’s really jealous of whom — never converged.

There's no real causal link between hobbies and marital status though.
Marriage comes down to meeting someone, financial outlook, family circumstances, and personal choice.
Plenty of singles have hobbies and plenty of married people have none.

    Re: #129
    It doesn't, actually?

Background and Key Points of This Debate

This “singles vs. marrieds” argument is a recurring staple on 5ch, and as one poster in the thread pointed out, “threads trashing singles get made all the time, but threads praising singles never do” — a pattern where people tend to justify their own life choices by putting down the other side. Married posters voiced envy of singles who “can move freely without worrying about hobbies or days off,” while single posters shot back that “no married person would actually ditch their wife and kids to go back to being single” — each side, in effect, projecting envy onto whatever they themselves gave up. The worry that “singles have no one to rely on when they get sick or grow old” is a common talking point about life planning, but it’s easy to overlook that marriage is no guarantee of security either — plenty of people end up single again through divorce or the death of a spouse.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyou G) thread “[Sad News] Why the middle-aged single guy bragging “being single is more fun” is trying to drag everyone else down with him lol.”

  • Middle schoolers don’t know BUMP OF CHICKEN — 5ch: “The times just keep sliding along”

A post about watching a middle-school girl’s voice-and-guitar livestream and being shocked she’d never heard of BUMP OF CHICKEN kicked off a discussion about generational gaps in music taste on 5ch’s Live News board (Nanademo Jikkyou G). Posters piled on with more examples: 2000s kids who never heard of BOØWY or Rebecca, middle schoolers who call Kenshi Yonezu and King Gnu their “childhood songs.” Some pointed out that the way older posters see Shogo Hamada and Koji Tamaki as “artists from way back” is exactly how today’s high schoolers now see BUMP, RADWIMPS, and Orange Range. Meanwhile, plenty pushed back against the generalization that “middle-aged guys can’t get into music by younger artists,” so opinions ended up split.

    Honestly, that’s shocking.

Back in 2005, when I was in middle school, Orange Range and stuff were huge. But something 20 years old at the time, like Bass–Kakefu–Okada (the legendary Hanshin Tigers batting lineup), felt like ancient history, and even Evangelion at 10 years old already had that "old-school otaku" image.

Thinking about it that way, something 20 years old now, like "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya," must be a classic to kids today, and even something from just 10 years ago (was there anything big then?) probably feels like the distant past to them.

Honestly the only young female artist I listen to is Aimyon anyway — and when I looked it up, she's 31, so there's only a 3-year gap between us.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

So-called “Rockin’on-style” bands like BUMP OF CHICKEN, Mr. Children, and ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION won over young listeners from the 2000s through the early 2010s, but the artists middle schoolers actually listen to now — My Hair is Bad, Creephyp, Back Number, Macaroni Enpitsu — belong to the streaming generation, and this generational split kept coming up throughout the thread. What divided opinion was just how fast a sense of “dated-ness” sets in: many were startled by the observation that even “Your Name.,” only ten years old, already counts as a classic to today’s young people. Posters also contrasted artists like Spitz and Southern All Stars, whose songs are still sung today, with ones like Noriyuki Makihara, who had hits at the time but haven’t held up as well for later generations. Worth noting: the claim that “middle-aged men can’t get into music by younger artists” was just one poster’s personal theory, not something the whole thread agreed on — an easy point to misread.

  • Kura Sushi’s Sudden 10% Discount Causes Chaos in Stores… The Truth Behind Online Reports That ‘The Discount Wasn’t Applied’

On the 6th and 7th, Kura Sushi ran a storewide 10% discount as an apology for canceling its Chiikawa collaboration campaign — but the discount wasn’t automatically applied at self-checkout; customers had to actively ask a staff member to have it applied. Online, complaints piled up that “the discount wasn’t given,” with some raising concerns about possible violations of Japan’s Act against Unjustifiable Premiums and Misleading Representations. Opinions on the thread split between those defending it as an unavoidable quirk of self-checkout systems and those criticizing the company for poor design and inadequate notice. The discussion also spread to separate reports about how the collaboration merchandise had been managed.

Major conveyor-belt sushi chain Kura Sushi is in turmoil after abruptly canceling its collaboration campaign with the popular character Chiikawa.

On the 6th and 7th, the company announced a storewide “10% discount at checkout” for all items, but it turns out many stores mishandled even this apology discount campaign. Posts online piled up with complaints like “I wasn’t given the discount” and “it only gets applied if you speak up to an employee.”

If it’s true that the “10% discount wasn’t being applied” as a widespread, ongoing situation, Kura Sushi could well be in violation of laws such as the Act against Unjustifiable Premiums and Misleading Representations.

Nobody's actually saying that, are they?
No company, no matter how terrible, is going to act on assumptions about things that haven't even been confirmed.

Background and Key Points of This Story

This 10% discount, limited to just two days (the 6th and 7th), wasn’t designed to be applied automatically at checkout — it was a self-checkout system that only applied the discount if the customer spoke up and asked a staff member for it. Since the Chiikawa collaboration itself had originally been scheduled to run through the 30th, some posts conflated the short discount window with the collaboration’s original end date. If the company deliberately failed to properly explain the terms, it could raise issues under the Act against Unjustifiable Premiums and Misleading Representations — but opinions on the thread split between those defending it as “not unusual for self-checkout systems” and those criticizing the company for not designing around the risk of oversight. Separately, regarding management of the collaboration merchandise, Yahoo! News reported — based on interviews with employees — that “many of the teacups were being stored somewhere without a lock,” but this concerns the internal management of one specific store and is a separate issue from the discount-application problem, one that readers can easily conflate.

They call her a 'model,' but she's got no more name recognition than Kozono's wife anyway —
she's just an influencer (lol) at the end of the day

Yano can frame his exit as his own request, but what's this guy gonna do?
He was talking big in the off-season about not knowing his place and going to the majors, so are they shipping him off to America?

    Re: #18
Yano's getting shipped off to another team in a trade,
while Kozono looks headed to America via the posting system

Even Kikuchi couldn't find a team willing to take him, so there's no way anyone picks up Kozono either

This team hasn't changed its ways since the Showa era —
brutal training, flashy nightlife, low pay.
From a player's view, if the pay's low and the training's brutal, the one thing that makes it worth staying is basically how easy it is to play around off the field.
But these days everything gets found out no matter what you do, so Hiroshima's only real selling point for players is gone now

Apparently she'd been showing up to athletes' drinking parties for a while, and after 'consulting' with someone about Kozono, it turned into a half-live-in thing

That settles it, go to the Lotte Marines, they're desperate for a shortstop
    Fresh start

Lotte's already got Tomosugi though —
    he's a genuinely top-tier shortstop,
Tomosugi's a good deal better than Kozono as a player

This Lisa Watanabe reminds me of MARIA. Wasn't MARIA also married to Toma Tanaka but fell for Kid Yamamoto at first sight and went after him?

He's normally exactly the type of Carp player who doesn't get put in limbo over his contract, but he haggled right down to the wire this time and ended up like this — the owner and the GM must be furious

    Re: #223
Maybe he's just as eager about his 'batting practice' on that side of things too?

Background and Key Points of This Story

Kaito Kozono is a key shortstop for the Hiroshima Carp who won the Central League batting title in 2023. He married in 2021 to a woman whose identity was initially withheld, later revealed to be influencer Lisa Watanabe. This mid-season divorce announcement is unusual, and the facts are tangled — from the “close-up photos” Bunshun reported involving another woman, to counter-allegations of an affair on Watanabe’s side. Reactions in the thread mixed criticism of and sympathy for Kozono with suspicion toward Watanabe, resisting any simple “perpetrator vs. victim” framing. The discussion also branched into topics unrelated to the divorce itself — rumors of a posting-system move or trade next season, and grumbling about the team’s treatment of players — showing that his on-field reputation (as a former batting champion) and his personal-life reputation are being judged on separate tracks. It’s worth noting that Bunshun’s report may reflect only one side’s account, and with no official comment yet from either party, much of this remains speculation.
