  • Juice=Juice and Maria Makino Share the Stage — Fans Spiral Into Tenure and Follower-Count Comparisons

On the Hello! Project board, a joint appearance by Juice=Juice and former member Maria Makino became a hot topic. Rather than reacting to the collaboration itself, the thread quickly veered into rankings of Morning Musume and Juice=Juice membership tenure and comparisons of X (Twitter) follower counts, with posters expressing surprise that Makino’s numbers were “lower than expected.” The discussion also touched on the contrast between members who remain regulars on terrestrial TV and former members whose exposure has faded since graduating, splitting opinion among fans.

Your math is always off by one day.
Membership days should be calculated "inclusive of day one."
Elapsed days are calculated "exclusive of day one."
The membership-day figures listed on Wikipedia are calculated the "exclusive" way, so they're one day short.
You can't just copy the numbers as-is — you have to add one day to each.

    Background and Key Points

Within Hello! Project fandom, membership tenure and social media follower counts are frequently used as points of comparison. Wikipedia’s membership-day figures are calculated as elapsed days “not counting day one,” so simply subtracting dates produces a count that’s off by one from the actual number of days served — a common source of confusion. The “One-Four” crew mentioned in the thread is fan slang for an older generation of former Juice=Juice and Morning Musume members, and the contrast between those who’ve stayed active and those whose terrestrial TV exposure dropped off early became the thread’s main point of discussion. Some posters were surprised that Maria Makino’s follower count seemed “low,” but this is only relative to other former members, and the thread didn’t address that differences in current activity level and media opportunities could be behind the gap.

  • PS5 Launches Extended Warranty Campaign for New Buyers — 5ch: “Feels Like a Dying Console”

Sony has announced a new-purchase campaign for the “PS5 Digital Edition, Japanese-only.” Anyone who buys an eligible PS5 console and applies by March 31, 2027 will get their standard 1-year manufacturer warranty extended by an extra year, for 2 years of coverage total. On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, the choice to offer a warranty extension instead of a price cut drew comments like “isn’t this a sign of a console on its last legs that’s run out of budget?” and “are margins so tight they can’t even discount the console itself?” Others took it more simply as just a statement about failure rates and repair support, so opinions on the campaign’s real purpose were divided.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Extended-warranty campaigns are a promotional tactic manufacturers commonly reach for on products where price cuts are hard to justify, and this isn’t unique to the PS5. Many thread comments speculated that “disc-based games might vanish from stores in two years,” but that’s just the posters’ own speculation — Sony hasn’t officially announced any end to production or sales. Japan’s Product Liability Act also requires manufacturers to keep repair parts on hand for a set period after production ends, so the long-term warranty can also be read as part of that kind of support setup. Whether to view the extended warranty as a “sign of a dying console” or a “statement of long-term support” split opinion within the thread itself, and it’s not something the campaign wording alone can settle.

Actor Yuji Oda attended a commemorative event on September 13 in Kita Ward, Osaka, for “Bayside Shakedown N.E.W.: Dash Through the Metropolis!” (opening September 18), telling a crowd of 5,000 fans — far exceeding the expected 3,000 — that he wants to make another sequel “as soon as possible.” It marked his first visit to Osaka as Detective Shunsaku Aoshima in 14 years, since 2012. On 5ch, discussion ranged over box-office projections tied to advance ticket sales, mentions of Jiro Sato’s absence from this installment, and how the story might be easier to write without Shinji Muroi, as users debated where the franchise goes from here.

    Background and Talking Points

The “Bayside Shakedown” franchise returns with its first new installment in 14 years, and within the story, Toshiro Yanagiba’s character Shinji Muroi has died. The “moviecard” figures that came up in the thread refer to advance movie-ticket presales, a number often used to gauge early box-office momentum. A total of over 17,000 isn’t a low figure by any means, but since it’s unclear just how big a hit the “Chiikawa” film comparison point will be, opinions in the thread were split on how to read the numbers. Meanwhile, frustration over Jiro Sato’s absence from this installment tends to run strongest among longtime fans of the series — a friction point common to long-running franchises with shifting casts. It’s worth noting that the article alone doesn’t reveal how the film will actually perform at the box office.

  • Kōsuke Minowa Slams Hosts as Insufferable — 5ch Claps Back: “Fair Point, But You’re No Different”

On the night of September 13, Gentosha editor Kōsuke Minowa posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account: “The way hosts act all high-and-mighty, spouting life lessons — it makes me sick to begin with.” It was a personal take on the host club industry, but the reaction on 5ch didn’t stop at simple agreement. Since Minowa himself was previously reported to have had an affair, a wave of pushback picked apart his own past instead, with comments like “You’re no different” and “Don’t go lecturing people while ignoring your own affair.” Rather than debating the host industry itself, the thread ended up centering on “who’s doing the talking.”

Ah, you mean Roland (the famous celebrity host).

An editor of all people acting all high-and-mighty toward others — that's sickening too.

You've published plenty of books letting sketchy people preach life lessons yourself, you know.
    27AnonymousSep 14, 2026 09:41
Isn't it a problem when someone who at least holds the social standing — and arguably the responsibility — of being an editor openly calls an entire profession trash?
Sure, everyone's entitled to their own likes, dislikes, and impressions, that's fine. But I think there's a line a grown adult ought to draw.
    28AnonymousSep 14, 2026 09:42
Hosts run the gamut from great to terrible, so tweeting something this vague means he must've really been fuming — but it's such a pointless diary-tier rant that there's nothing to even respond to.

Apparently over 80% of their customers are sex workers.
    44AnonymousSep 14, 2026 09:47
In Ushijima the Loan Shark (a manga about a ruthless loan shark), hosts are the classic scumbags — they con female customers, rip them off, and sell them into the sex trade.
    45AnonymousSep 14, 2026 09:47
Yeah, this whole trend of glorifying hosts, hostess-club girls, and ex-gangsters is garbage.

I always figured hosts and organized-crime types were basically his own crowd — guess not?
    49AnonymousSep 14, 2026 09:49
Hosts con female customers into ordering absurdly expensive bottles until they're saddled with like 10 million yen in debt. Of course the woman can't pay, so then he hooks her up with a sex-work job to cover it.

Did a host steal Ikechan away from him?

well, nothing compared to the world-renowned editor, the great Professor Minowa, of course.

The Breaking Down crowd is much the same.
This trend of praising ex-gangsters for 'going straight' is childish,

Background and Key Points of This Story

Kōsuke Minowa is a Gentosha editor known for bestsellers like Tadōryoku (“The Power of Action”) and for launching numerous celebrities’ books into the world; in 2020, a weekly tabloid reported that he’d had an affair. The backlash to this latest post centered less on the substance of his criticism of the host industry than on the fact that he was lecturing others while glossing over his own past. At the same time, some in the thread also pointed to real issues in the industry — exorbitant billing at host clubs, hosts steering customers into sex work — so a fair number of posters did agree with what Minowa actually said. Note: comments mocking real individuals’ appearance or private lives, and inappropriate posts referencing actual criminal or suicide cases, have been excluded from this article as unverifiable slander or otherwise lacking in consideration.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Geinou/Sports Breaking News+) thread “Kōsuke Minowa shares his opinion on some hosts: “The way hosts act all high-and-mighty, spouting life lessons, makes me sick to begin with”.”

  • Thread Lets a Roulette Decide the First Move of a Day Off — 5ch Reacts: “What Even Is This?”

On 5ch’s News VIP board, a thread went up using a “roulette” format — deciding what to do first on a day off based on the last digit of a post’s timestamp (a classic 5ch dice-roll gimmick). Roll 1–3 and it’s off to the laundromat; roll 4–6 and it’s a trip to the super sento (public bathhouse), and so on down the list of assigned destinations. Along the way, a regular posting in a distinctive character voice (´・ω・`) kept shooting down other users’ repeated attempts to hijack the thread with calls for an “ohagi festival” (ohagi being a sweet rice cake). The thread rolled on through chatter about laundry, breakfast, and the weather, and got a laugh partway through when someone posted a photo of what looked like a bootleg Kinnikuman-eraser figure, prompting the reaction: “what even is this.”

    Background and Talking Points

By way of background, News VIP has a deep-rooted culture of regulars who post in a signature character voice (´・ω・`) and keep threads rolling with formulaic back-and-forth, and this thread’s original poster looks to be one of them. The “roulette that decides your next move by the last digit of your post” is a well-worn time-killing format that turns the thread into a kind of choose-your-own-adventure game — what isn’t obvious from the text alone is that this is a recurring genre of thread, not a one-off. Also, the “kinkeshi” mentioned partway through is short for “Kinnikuman keshigomu” (Kinnikuman erasers), a toy line that was huge in the 1980s and had plenty of unofficial knockoffs (pachimono) floating around — without that context, the exchange can look like plain small talk rather than the in-joke it actually is. The thread itself didn’t produce any real controversy or disagreement; it was simply participants enjoying some back-and-forth banter.

※This article was compiled and summarized from the 5ch (News VIP) thread “(´・ω・`) A Thread That Just Decides Your First Move on a Day Off by Roulette.”

  • Switch 2’s “Never Coming” Third-Party Games Keep Getting Ported, Sparking Discussion Online

On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, users are buzzing about a string of third-party titles once thought to be off the table for Switch 2 that keep getting ported anyway. Examples cited include Street Fighter 6, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2, and Resident Evil Requiem, with posters also pointing to Hogwarts Legacy — once assumed to be a “no Switch” game — which ended up getting ported after all. On the other hand, Konami’s new title “Rev. NOiR” and Like a Dragon Studio’s new game “STRANGER THAN HEAVEN” have both skipped a Switch 2 release, and opinions in the thread were split on which titles will or won’t get ported from here on out.

I bet GTA6 will show up eventually too. Switch2's basically becoming the only platform that can put out a proper physical release, physical is the only real option for kids buying games, and honestly Switch2's probably going to be the only console kids are even buying going forward.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Switch2 was initially seen as too underpowered compared to consoles like the PS5 to handle ports of major third-party titles, but more and more games are making the jump thanks to techniques like DLSS that ease the rendering load. Hogwarts Legacy set an early precedent: before Switch2 was even announced, it was once declared “impossible to port,” only to end up releasing there anyway — and the thread repeatedly cited that history. Separately, 5ch has its own slang term, “hub,” for titles that get left off a platform’s release lineup, with new games from Konami and Sega cited as examples. What the thread touches on less is that whether a port happens depends not just on hardware performance but on a publisher’s own profitability calculations. Note also that the “🐷” (pig emoji) used in the thread is a nickname specific to 5ch’s hardware/industry board — it’s board-specific ribbing, not an attack on any real individual.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry) thread “[Reverse Prophet] Here’s the List of Third-Party Titles That Were Never Supposed to Come to Switch2 lol“.

  • Nikkei Falls Again, Drops Below ¥64,000 — 5ch: “Brokerages Need Layoffs Too”

Tokyo stocks opened lower for a second straight day on the 14th, with the Nikkei average starting at ¥63,659.53, down ¥351.81 from the previous week’s close. The decline briefly topped ¥600, pushing the index below the psychologically important ¥64,000 mark. Selling was led by AI- and semiconductor-related names such as SoftBank Group and Advantest after news broke that U.S.-based OpenAI would postpone its IPO until next year, while rising oil futures — driven by expectations of prolonged tension in the Middle East — also weighed on investor sentiment. Opinions on the thread were split between those calling it “an AI bubble correction” and those insisting “growth is still underway,” with the discussion spreading to household self-defense topics like rising interest rates, heavier mortgage burdens, and rethinking term deposits and government bonds.

Tokyo stocks opened lower for a second consecutive day on the 14th. The opening price was ¥63,659.53, down ¥351.81 from the previous week’s close. The decline topped ¥600 at one point, falling below the key ¥64,000 level. News that U.S.-based OpenAI would postpone its initial public offering (IPO) until next year triggered early selling in AI- and semiconductor-related shares, including SoftBank Group (SBG) and Advantest. U.S. crude oil futures rose during Japan trading hours on the 14th on expectations that tensions in the Middle East will persist, adding further pressure to investor sentiment.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Nikkei has been trading in the ¥64,000 range since entering September, with inflows into AI and semiconductor stocks partly driving that climb. The key point about this drop is that it was triggered by a single piece of news — OpenAI’s delayed IPO — rather than any confirmed pessimism about AI investment overall. That’s exactly where opinions on the thread split, with posts calling it “the start of a bubble collapse” sitting alongside posts arguing it’s “just a correction, and growth will continue.” The discussion also touched on how U.S. interest-rate moves ripple into Japanese stocks, and on real voices from people whose mortgage variable rates have actually started climbing — making this a discussion that ties stock prices to household finances, not just the market. Exchanges about domestic politics that weren’t part of the original article were excluded, but it’s worth keeping in mind that the market’s actual moves from here will depend on future U.S. rate decisions and developments in the Middle East.

  • From S-Rank Voice Actress Debates to Hot Takes on Matsumoto: A 5ch ‘NanG’ Chat Roundup

5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyō board (NanG) is home to freewheeling chat threads where random topics pile up with zero connection to each other. This one’s a textbook example: it opens with the classic question of ‘which female voice actress has S-rank voice quality,’ with Kiritani Hana’s name getting thrown out, then veers into Kagawa Prefecture’s udon culture — including a local-sounding claim that ‘nobody eats instant Nissin Donbei udon there because the restaurants are cheaper anyway’ — and a story about how telling a Downtown fan that Hitoshi Matsumoto is ‘basically just a YouTuber now’ got them furious. There’s no unifying theme here; each reply brings its own mix of agreement, pushback, and jokes.

    Background and Talking Points

Threads like this are typical of the Nandemo Jikkyō (NanG) board’s chat-thread style, which often opens with a slice-of-life line and isn’t tied to any particular news story — instead, participants just toss out whatever topic comes to mind. Since a prompt like ‘S-rank voice quality’ has no clear criteria, these debates tend to drift along without ever reaching a conclusion, and Kiritani Hana’s name coming up is just one poster’s opinion. Likewise, the claim that ‘restaurant udon is cheaper than instant Donbei’ in Kagawa reflects one local’s personal sense of things rather than any statistical backing. And the exchange about Hitoshi Matsumoto captures a slice of ongoing chatter about how public perception of celebrities has shifted as they appear on TV less — it isn’t meant to assert any settled fact.

  • Men’s volleyball hits 9.8% rating, Fuji TV’s best of the year — 5ch: “Because the hunk ratio is so high”

The men’s final of the 2026 Asian Volleyball Championship, Japan vs. Iran, broadcast live on Fuji TV on September 13, recorded a household rating of 14.2% and an individual rating of 9.8%, making it Fuji TV’s highest-rated program of the year. The figure even surpassed the network’s broadcast of the World Cup Asian final-qualifier match against Brazil, prompting surprised reactions on 5ch’s Geinou/Sports Breaking News+ board like “Who’d have guessed volleyball would beat the World Cup.” Meanwhile, the thread saw the long-simmering feud between soccer fans and baseball fans flare up again, with plenty of comments also praising the players’ looks and how easy the sport’s rules are to follow, broadening the discussion further.

Back when Fuji TV was doing the volleyball broadcasts
Totally unrelated idol-group guests would show up and the venue would go nuts while the volleyball itself was garbage
Making the Olympics was basically out of the question
Once other networks took over as the main broadcaster, the men's team actually got strong

In other words, Fuji TV is basically a jinx, a symbol of how weak men's volleyball used to be
They should let this be the last time Fuji gets to broadcast it

Background and key points of this discussion

It’s worth noting that this “beat the World Cup” rating claim isn’t a comparison against every World Cup broadcast — it’s specifically a comparison against Fuji TV’s own broadcast of the Japan vs. Brazil match. According to the data cited in the thread, the Netherlands, Tunisia, and Sweden matches broadcast by NHK and Nippon TV all pulled high ratings in the 27-42% range, meaning that across the whole network landscape, soccer still draws bigger numbers overall. This result is only the “highest-rated Fuji TV program this year” — a limited claim — and it’s easy to overlook how much it’s tied up with volleyball’s rising popularity as well as differing conditions like broadcast scheduling, time slots, and whether a BS simulcast was offered. The thread mixed genuine praise for the sport itself (the rally-point scoring system, automated line-call tech) with plenty of jabs aimed at soccer and baseball fans.

  • Akiyama Mao: “I’ll Keep Working in Entertainment After Graduation” — Hashisako Rin: “I’m Retiring From Entertainment After Graduation”

Akiyama Mao and Hashisako Rin, members of the Hello! Project idol group Tsubaki Factory, announced their graduation from the group at the same time. Their post-graduation paths are strikingly different, though: Akiyama has stated clearly that she’ll continue working in entertainment after graduating, while Hashisako says she’ll retire from the industry entirely once she graduates. The gap sparked a wave of reactions on 5ch’s Hello! Project board, with posters speculating on the reasons behind the split — citing differences in the two members’ workloads, fan popularity, and skill sets. Some also looked back at past members who stayed in showbiz after graduating, or conversely returned to activity after “retiring,” to guess what might come next for each of them.

    10AnonymousSep 14, 2026 08:15
Fine if she wants to keep going, but she needs to stop lingering around Hello! Project and UP-FRONT's orbit.

    Re: #10
Solved the moment you stop lingering around Hello! Project yourself.
    11AnonymousSep 14, 2026 08:15
Hashisako barely had any solo work to begin with, right?
    13AnonymousSep 14, 2026 08:16
It's not even guaranteed she stays with UP-FRONT — could end up being a Niinuma-type situation (a member who left the agency after "retiring").
    14AnonymousSep 14, 2026 08:18
Hashisako → I could totally see her becoming a YouTuber.

    24AnonymousSep 14, 2026 08:40
She doesn't seem that into being an idol, and probably has zero motivation for Hello! Project at this point. Why did she even become a trainee in the first place again?

Tsubaki Factory really has too many "restless spirits who can't move on."

    Stayed with the agency:
Yamagishi, Asakura (retired, then came back), Akiyama?

    Continued elsewhere:
    Ogata, Kishimoto, Niinuma

    Retired or status unknown:
    Yagi

Every member of Tsubaki Factory is ambitious and pushy, so Hello! Project otaku who prefer meek, low-ego girls tend to dislike Tsubaki.

She and Sasaki are in a mutually dependent relationship, so she'll probably stay with the agency. Wouldn't be shocked if they got married eventually.
    52AnonymousSep 14, 2026 09:22
Kasahara seems to be struggling too — it's tough to actually produce results outside the agency.

    Re: #52
Inside or outside doesn't really matter. Everyone's definition of success is different — it's just that only a small handful ever "succeed" in the entertainment industry at all.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

In Hello! Project, whether a member stays in entertainment solo after graduating from her group or retires from the industry entirely varies from person to person — cases like Akiyama’s and Hashisako’s, where two members graduate at the same time but land on opposite paths, aren’t unusual. Posters in the thread bring up past examples like Niinuma and Haga, noting that members who announced they’d “stay in entertainment” have sometimes scaled back activity later, while others who said they’d “retire” have sometimes come back. That said, these are ultimately fan speculation based on past patterns and impressions — neither the agency nor the members themselves have officially explained the reasoning behind their post-graduation choices. Some posts point to gaps in popularity or workload as the deciding factor, but a member’s path after graduation is often shaped by undisclosed personal or family circumstances, so it’s worth remembering that forum speculation doesn’t necessarily reflect the real story.
