  • Hello! Project’s Individual MVP: 5ch Says ‘No Argument, It’s Momoha Nagano’

A thread titled “This year’s Hello! Project individual MVP has to be Momoha Nagano, right?” popped up on 5channel’s Hello! Project board. Nagano is a newcomer who joined Juice=Juice only recently, but many praised her for winning a solo showcase festival just half a year after her debut. Others pushed back, arguing that “MVP is a title tied to team results too,” while some threw their support behind other Juice=Juice members, Angerme’s Tanimoto, and Morning Musume。’s Danbara. There was also back-and-forth correcting misunderstandings about how the solo festival’s voting results should be interpreted, and in the end no consensus was reached.

There's no way this is wrong, whether you go by fan votes or member votes
    2AnonymousSep 20, 2026 08:39
Isn't Momoha Nagano not even a Juice=Juice member? That doesn't seem right
    3AnonymousSep 20, 2026 08:39
Even in major sports it's a title heavily shaped by team results, so I'm not so sure…
Now Rookie of the Year, no argument there.
    4AnonymousSep 20, 2026 08:39
Momoha was just on a different level.
    5AnonymousSep 20, 2026 08:40
Rookie of the Year should easily go to Nia too
Being in Angerme means you get nothing anyway

Honestly, unless she transfers groups, her whole career could be in jeopardy
    12AnonymousSep 20, 2026 08:46
Just for the solo festival, sure — she was definitely the MVP of this year's solo festival.
    14AnonymousSep 20, 2026 08:47
Even at the solo festival, Niina (Nagano's nickname) was effectively the MVP anyway.

    As an individual, no complaints
but the team was too weak for it to translate into wins

    Background and Points of Contention

Hello! Project runs a major showcase where members compete individually through solo performances, and how they place there often fuels debate over the “individual MVP.” Within the thread, some posts noted that the audience-vote winner (MIP) was Sachie Tamenaga, while the member-vote MVP was Miki Nonaka — meaning the initial claims of “rigged voting” may have stemmed from confusing these two separate awards. Momoha Nagano is a relatively recent addition to Juice=Juice, and while many praised her for achieving this just half a year after her debut, plenty of others feel the MVP title can’t be separated from the group’s overall results. The disagreement reflects a broader split among fans over whether individual skill or group popularity and performance should carry more weight.

  • Pretty Cure Watch-Along Thread: The Full Play-by-Play, From Croquette Run to Falling Back Asleep

In a Sunday-morning live-watching thread for the Pretty Cure series, posters on 5ch’s VIP board chronicled everything from their back-and-forth banter during the broadcast to a post-show croquette run and, finally, drifting back to sleep. The commentary kept dropping character names like Cure Éclair and Uso-cchi, with plenty of screenshots posted along the way. At one point someone needled the group with “aren’t you embarrassed, grown adults watching a show for little kids?” but the thread stayed laid-back from start to finish.

    Background and Talking Points

Sunday-morning Pretty Cure shows — “Tan Pri” being the current example — have long had a culture of fans live-watching together on 5ch and social media as the episode airs, and this thread is a textbook case of that. The emoji-heavy commentary, the constant swapping of screenshots, and the banter built around character nicknames (Uso-cchi, Shiruku-san, and so on) only work because everyone following the series is in on the same in-jokes. The jab that pops up midway — “aren’t you embarrassed, grown adults watching a kids’ show?” — echoes a long-running tension around the franchise: it’s aimed at children, yet it has always pulled in a sizable adult fanbase. Nobody in the thread takes the bait seriously, though, and it wraps up with the same everyday beat it started with — a croquette run after the episode, then back to bed for a nap.

  • Fire Emblem: Myriad Blossoms User Score Bounces Back from 8.0 to 9.2 After Fake Reviews Purged

The Metacritic user score for Fire Emblem: Myriad Blossoms became a hot topic on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board after it briefly sank to 8.0 amid a wave of negative reviews right after launch, then recovered to 9.2 once posts judged to be fake reviews were removed. Posters noted this echoes a past pattern where Nintendo titles’ scores rise once fake reviews are purged, while Sony titles’ scores tend to fall in the same situation, and the thread debated why. At the same time, some questioned whether the removal criteria are applied evenly across all games, or whether only famous titles get this kind of preferential treatment.

Background and key points of this discussion

Metacritic user scores are prone to “review bombing,” where users flood a newly released game with a wave of 0s or 10s; when the site’s moderation detects an unnatural posting pattern, it may remove those reviews after the fact. Whether a score rises or falls after such a purge simply depends on which direction the deleted reviews had skewed it — there’s no fixed rule that Nintendo titles go up while Sony titles go down. In the thread, many posters pointed to past examples involving Sony titles and suspected organized manipulation by a specific fanbase, but this is speculation based on the board’s own observations, not confirmation of any official Metacritic policy that treats different fan communities differently. Some also questioned whether cleanup only happens for famous titles, but since Metacritic doesn’t publish its removal thresholds or operating criteria, that point remains unverified.

  • Hired as “Hospital Staff,” Disabled Worker Was Actually Doing Farm Labor — Composting Job Caused Lung Disease, Ruled a Workplace Injury

A Yomiuri Shimbun investigation has revealed that a disabled worker, hired as “hospital staff” under a disability-employment business scheme, was actually made to do farm labor producing compost — and later developed a lung disease that was recognized as a workplace injury. The mismatch between the advertised job and the actual duties, and the reality of “employment for employment’s sake” taking place in a life-and-death medical setting, drew surprise and questions on the 5channel Business News+ thread. Defenders who said “having a job at all is a blessing” clashed with critics who called it “fraudulent hiring that misrepresented the real work,” with the gap between the stated principle and actual practice of disability employment becoming the central point of debate.

    38AnonymousSep 20, 2026 06:24
    Re: #32
Well, that's not technically a lie, lol

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Japan has a legally mandated employment quota system requiring private companies to hire people with disabilities at a set ratio. In recent years this has given rise to “farm-based employment businesses” that lease out farmland to companies struggling to meet their quota, assigning disabled employees light agricultural work that counts toward their employment figures. In this case, the focus is on the fact that this scheme was used inside a hospital — a medical setting — and that the job title advertised, “hospital staff,” didn’t match the actual work performed. On the thread, defenders arguing “having a job at all is good” clashed with critics calling it “fraudulent hiring that misrepresented the real work,” though neither side questioned the legal quota system itself — the debate centered on whether this particular case was handled properly. It’s worth noting that the original article doesn’t spell out the exact causal link between the compost-making work and the lung disease, nor the standard used to grant workplace-injury recognition — a point readers could easily misread.

  • PS6 GPU Specs Leaked, Analysis Claims 80 TFLOPS Effective Power — 5ch: “The Real Issue Is the Price”

A thread appeared on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (ゲハ) board introducing a performance analysis of the custom GPU believed to be headed for the PS6. According to the leaked info, the RDNA 5-generation GPU has a TDP of 160W and 54 compute units, with raw compute performance of about 40 TFLOPS — but thanks to a “Dual Issue” feature that processes two instructions per clock, effective performance is said to reach 68-80 TFLOPS, surpassing the RX 9070 XT. Rather than focusing on the raw numbers, many replies voiced concerns about the actual retail price and the software lineup, with commenters recalling how past PlayStation consoles have touted inflated performance figures at launch, leading to a wave of skepticism toward this leak as well.

    1AnonymousSep 20, 2026 08:08
An analysis of the custom GPU specifications for the PlayStation 6, based on the RDNA 5 architecture, has revealed a TDP of 160W and 54 compute units. With a clock speed reaching 3.6GHz, each individual compute unit in the console GPU outperforms an RX 9070 XT unit by 15-20%.
In path tracing workloads, this console GPU delivers 70-100% higher performance than the RX 9070 XT. Thanks to the "Dual Issue" execution feature, theoretical peak performance reaches 68-80 TFLOPS, placing it between the GeForce RTX 5080 (56.3 TFLOPS) and the GeForce RTX 5090 (104 TFLOPS).
Thanks to the advanced Dual Issue functionality and the machine-learning-based scaling technology "PSSR 3," effective performance is boosted to 35-50% above the official spec figures. Additionally, sophisticated AI-driven optimization helps offset the limitations of the 160-bit memory interface.

Add the CPU, memory, and storage and you're easily past ¥200,000, lol.

That depends on the release year.
Once next-gen Radeon chips ship, prices naturally drop — and it can't go into a console until it does, so it's basically waiting on that.
That's also why the Switch 2 took so long to arrive: they were waiting for the chip to become last-gen and cheap.
Bottom line, console hardware is fated to only ship once its chip is already outdated.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Dual Issue” refers to a mechanism where a GPU’s execution units process two instructions per clock in parallel, and as commenters in the thread pointed out, real-world performance doesn’t simply double to match the theoretical figure — that depends on instruction dependencies and how much idle execution capacity is actually available. TFLOPS figures represent theoretical peak compute performance only and don’t scale in a simple, direct way with actual in-game rendering performance; that’s evident from the PS3’s history, where Sony touted “1.8 TFLOPS” at launch even though the RSX GPU’s real-world effective performance fell well short of that. The numbers discussed here are, at this stage, still an analyst’s estimate and projection, not PS6’s confirmed official specifications. It’s also worth noting that actual retail pricing tends to be heavily affected by rising memory and storage costs, and the thread’s point that raw performance figures alone don’t tell you much about a product’s real appeal rings true given the history of console hardware pricing.

*This article was compiled and summarized from the 5ch Hardware/Industry (ゲハ) board thread “Leaker: ‘PS6’s specs revealed! 40 TFLOPS performance reaches 80 TFLOPS via Dual Issue, surpassing the RX 9070’.”

  • Akiyama Mao: “I said I wanted to graduate and it was settled that same day — no one tried to stop me” — Sanma: “That’s sad”

Akiyama Mao, a member of Hello! Project’s Tsubaki Factory, revealed that the company approved her graduation on the very same day she requested it, with no attempt made to talk her out of it. Comedian Akashiya Sanma responded to the revelation with “That’s sad.” Akiyama also shared that she moved to Tokyo alone at age 13 and used to cry every time she traveled back and forth to Osaka out of loneliness. Following her comments, discussion broke out on 5ch: some claimed Morning Musume’s Fukumura Mizuki was held back for about three years before being allowed to graduate, while others noted that Ikuta Erika, Ishida Ayumi, and Makino Maria were reportedly approached by the agency about their own graduation timing. Opinions split over Hello! Project’s graduation customs, with some arguing “there’s no such thing as being held back in the first place” and others countering that “the informal queue of roughly one graduation every six months is effectively a form of holding members back.”

Re: #83 / It just got pushed back because of Makino and Kitagawa.

    Background and Points of Debate

In Hello! Project, it’s a recurring topic when an idol’s graduation timing is said to be coordinated by the agency rather than left entirely up to the member. Morning Musume’s Fukumura Mizuki reportedly needed several years before she was allowed to graduate, and some in the thread pointed out that her graduation concert had to be postponed because it couldn’t be held during the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, members like Ikuta Erika, Ishida Ayumi, and Makino Maria are said to have had their graduation timing suggested to them by the agency, underscoring the view that graduation timing isn’t decided by the member’s wishes alone. The thread also noted that graduation announcements seem to be paced at roughly one member every six months, sparking a divide between those who argue this waiting-list system amounts to a real form of being held back, and those who insist the agency doesn’t hold anyone back at all — with the important caveat that neither claim has been officially confirmed.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project) thread “[Sad News] Akiyama Mao: “I told the company I wanted to graduate and it was decided that same day, they didn’t try to stop me at all” — Sanma: “That’s sad”.”

  • Chunichi’s Akira Neo Blows Up Again in the Minors, Gives Up 5 Runs in 1 Inning vs. Hayate

Chunichi Dragons pitcher Akira Neo took the mound as the third pitcher in a farm-league (minor-league) official game against Kufu Hayate Ventures Shizuoka at Nagoya Stadium on September 19, and got hit hard, allowing 5 hits and 5 runs in just 1 inning. He came in as relief in the 7th inning with an 11-3, eight-run lead, but an infield hit to the leadoff batter combined with his own throwing error put a runner on second with no outs, and a string of hits let in a run. He also failed to record a single out while allowing 7 runs in a Farm-league game against DeNA back on August 11, and the fact that this kind of meltdown recurred in such a short span became a hot topic. On 5ch, comments split between questioning why he’s still being used as a pitcher and lamenting the waste of his background as a first-round pick multiple teams once fought over.

In the Farm-league game against DeNA on August 11, he failed to record even a single out while allowing 7 runs

Chunichi Dragons pitcher Akira Neo got hit hard again. He took the mound as the third pitcher in the Farm League game against Kufu Hayate Ventures Shizuoka held at Nagoya Stadium on September 19. After allowing 5 hits and 5 runs in a single inning, fans reacted with comments like “a cruel reality” and “that’s rough, even against Hayate.”

He entered in the 7th inning with the Dragons leading 11-3. He gave up a comebacker infield hit to the leadoff batter, and his own throwing error to first base compounded the trouble, immediately putting a runner on second with no outs. A single up the middle then loaded first and third. He got the next batter out on a foul fly to third for the first out, but then allowed an RBI single to left to give up a run.

    Re: #63
    Hard to say.
But I do think he'd have been better off with a team that actually develops its players properly.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Akira Neo was a “super high schooler” whose signing rights Chunichi won after multiple teams competed for him in the 2018 draft. He joined as a shortstop and has been converting to pitcher over recent years. This latest outing came in relief in the 7th inning with the score already decided at 11-3, so it wasn’t a situation that directly affected the win or loss — but since he also failed to record a single out while allowing 7 runs in a Farm-league game against DeNA on August 11, the fact that the same result repeated in such a short span is what drove the reaction on the thread. The debate split mainly over whether he should be moved back to a position player: some questioned the team’s handling of him given his sharp instincts and strong arm, while others pointed to development issues, such as him allegedly not listening to advice, with opinions divided over whether to blame the team’s usage policy or the player’s own attitude. There was also speculation that the team can’t let him go because he might “break out” with another club — but this is unconfirmed and should be treated as pure 5ch speculation, not established fact.

Companies like DeNA have cut workloads by as much as 90% in some cases, but that doesn’t automatically translate into “going home early.” On 5ch, comments ranged from sympathetic (“this is SO typically Japanese-company”) to frustration at a corporate structure where productivity gains never show up in wages or staffing, alongside counterarguments from people who say using freed-up time within work hours for other tasks is only natural. The discussion spread from there.

On August 3, a post titled “The story of how streamlining my job with AI somehow only increased my workload” appeared on Hatena Anonymous Diary and went viral on social media. The poster — described by coworkers as a hard worker — had, with good intentions, tested out ways to use AI and shared them with the company. But once an 8-hour task got compressed to 4 hours, that task was thereafter simply treated as “a 4-hour job,” and the remaining 4 hours got filled with something else.

In the end, the poster writes, it wasn’t a case of “someone who used to work 8 hours can now go home after 4 hours thanks to AI” — it was just “someone who used to finish 1 task in 8 hours now finishes 2 tasks in 8 hours.” The person who shared the technique ended up fielding all the explanations, training, and follow-up questions, with no change in pay. The poster called themselves an “inconvenient Santa Claus.”

Reactions were split between people who found it painfully relatable (“SO typically Japanese-company”) and skeptics who suspected it was a fabricated story written by AI. But the tendency for time saved to simply get reallocated to more work — rather than translating directly into shorter working hours — also shows up in survey data. So who’s actually benefiting from the time AI frees up, and for what?

Wouldn't it just make sense to cut staff?

    Re: #2
That's exactly why it ends up like this — Japanese companies can't fire people or cut their pay.
Going forward, simply hiring someone at all is going to be a liability.

When a giant corporation with a ton of employees rolls out AI, the costs are absurd — since they're using it for dumb questions and typing into Excel, the waste is next-level.
On the other hand, a one-person operation that uses AI well can generate several times the output of a big company for next to nothing.

Right now, the stuff AI can actually speed up is the low-thinking-required work. As a result, the share of work that actually requires human brainpower has gone up, and at my company, everyone on the ground is more exhausted than before.

This is exactly why Japanese employees fake being busy. If you blaze through your work efficiently before the clock runs out, all that happens is your quota goes up or you get handed more work.

    Re: #12
Exactly this. That's precisely why I went self-employed. When you're self-employed, the harder you work, the more you earn — and if you finish early, you're done, no need to go help anyone else out.
    14AnonymousSep 20, 2026 06:29
Objectively speaking, if an 8-hour job becomes a 4-hour job and you just go home, your daily productivity hasn't actually changed at all.

Regardless of AI, the whole point of raising productivity is to increase profit per person. I'm not saying work overtime for it, but isn't it normal to just use the extra time within your regular hours for another task? Discretionary-labor or contract-work arrangements might be different, I don't know about those.
    50AnonymousSep 20, 2026 06:50
    Re: #14
It'd be an easy sell if wages actually rose proportionally for employees whose productivity went up — but Japanese companies keep that fixed no matter what.
    227AnonymousSep 20, 2026 07:53
    Re: #14
What's actually going up is AI's productivity instead. In other words, you're teaching your job to some outside company's AI and training it — so it can eventually replace you entirely.

That's what "promoting AI" really means. And which companies make this AI? The Japanese are using American AI. So in the near future, it's America that's going to end up taking most of these jobs.
    24AnonymousSep 20, 2026 06:37
So you get made to do twice the work for the same pay. For the company, it's just one big laugh.

If engineers at other companies are tripling their efficiency with AI, doubling yours doesn't mean much — and that's on top of Japanese productivity already being called low to begin with.

If you're still complaining that AI at its current stage makes a lot of mistakes, that's on the skill level of whoever's using it. Build yourself a harness that runs verification passes over and over.
    51AnonymousSep 20, 2026 06:51
I don't get the complaint. What used to be 1 job in 8 hours is now 2 jobs, right? That means you can handle double the workload. Performance won't simply double, but the company's profit definitely goes up. A decent manager reflects that in employees' pay.

If that's how it plays out, it's fine.

This is exactly the difference between staying an employee forever and taking the path toward becoming a manager/owner.
    56AnonymousSep 20, 2026 06:53
If AI can handle it all, humans are barely going to be needed anymore, huh.

This is exactly why I hate commuting to the office and prefer working from home. If you're remote and streamline things with AI, you can just quietly wrap up your work on your own terms. But if you're in the office, you can't just get up and leave whenever you want.

    199AnonymousSep 20, 2026 07:42
Unless Japan changes its employment system, Japanese-style lifetime employment and labor law just don't mesh with AI.

CEO: "AI cut our workload by 90%, so we don't need more than half the staff anymore — you don't need to come in starting tomorrow~"
Employee: "You're telling us AI makes us unnecessary and firing us — that's illegal dismissal!"
Court: "The dismissal is invalid. Pay each employee 10 million yen in damages."

    Re: #209
No idea. I pay for both.

Background and key points of this discussion

Behind this topic lies Japan’s deep-rooted culture of evaluating work by hours spent rather than output. Even when AI shortens the time a task takes, since there’s no established system for evaluating people by the volume or quality of what they produce, the time saved tends to just get replaced with an additional assignment. In the thread, the argument that “productivity gains should show up in pay” ran alongside the argument that “of course you use your freed-up time within work hours for something else” — both partly valid, which is why opinions split. One point that tends to get overlooked is a structural constraint under Japan’s Labor Standards Act: companies find it difficult to unilaterally dismiss people or drastically change their workload simply because performance has improved, which feeds a cycle of “we can’t cut staff, so we just pile on more work instead.” Going forward, the key question may be shifting the framing of AI adoption’s benefits — away from “shorter hours” and toward “handling a greater volume of work in the same amount of time.”

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (News Express+) thread “Management: “Use AI to take it easy and go home early” → Employees: “We’re not going home” — Even DeNA, which cut workloads by up to 90%, is grappling with the wall of AI efficiency.”

  • Son Wants a ¥200,000 iPhone 18 Pro, Dad Torn — 5ch: “Kids Don’t Cherish a Compromise Purchase”

A post about a son who wants the latest iPhone 18 Pro (from ¥219,800) went viral on 5ch, with the parent agonizing over the roughly ¥95,000 gap versus the ¥124,800 iPhone 17e. Opinions split on whether to buy kids the latest model — some argued “kids won’t cherish something bought as a compromise,” while others countered “he should get a part-time job and buy it himself.” The debate also touched on how not having an iPhone can cut kids out of conversations at school, plus comparisons of performance and security versus Android.

The “iPhone 18 Pro,” announced in September 2026, is sold from ¥219,800 on Apple’s official website. Meanwhile, the “iPhone 17e,” released in March 2026, starts at ¥124,800. In this case, the son wants the latest iPhone 18 Pro.

However, comparing the same 256GB storage tier, the price gap with the iPhone 17e comes to ¥95,000. That’s no small difference for a family budget, so it’s only natural to wonder, “Does it really have to be the latest iPhone?”

This article compares the pricing and specs of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 17e to explain exactly what that extra ¥95,000 gets you.

If he's stuck with an old phone, bullying is a lock.

It'll wreck your parent-child relationship too — no grandkids to see, no one to take care of you in old age.

And if you don't buy it, the kid's mental health collapses, he never gets married, never lives a normal life, and you're stuck caring for him till you die — or he ends up killing you somewhere down the line.

Honestly, companies don't actually think that highly of students who spent all their high school and college years buried in part-time jobs.

Background and Key Points of Debate

The iPhone 17e, a budget-line model, launched in March 2026, while the 18 Pro, the flagship, was announced that September — comparing equal storage tiers, the price gap comes to roughly ¥95,000. The thread saw personal anecdotes about being “left out without a shared topic of conversation,” countered by plenty of level-headed pushback that “middle and high schoolers don’t actually care about the exact model number” — how much a phone model affects friendships clearly splits along generational and environmental lines. Posters also floated concrete alternatives, like extending an old phone’s life with a battery swap or getting by just fine on an older Android device, with a notable number of comments pushing back on the very premise that it “has to be the latest model.”

*This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary from the 5ch (Breaking News+) thread “My son says he wants the iPhone 18 Pro, which costs over ¥200,000 — I’m at a loss. The 17e runs about ¥120,000, so is there really a benefit to picking the latest model?.”

  • Love Live Fan Lists His Hobbies — 5ch Fires Back: ‘Walking Means No Hobbies’

A post on 5ch’s Love Live! board complained that people keep saying “Love Live fans have no hobbies besides Love Live.” The poster tried to prove otherwise by listing reading (criticism), listening to classical music, playing the viola, and going for walks, but replies were harsh, with comments like “way too pretentious, it’s blinding” and “saying ‘walking’ when asked about hobbies is basically proof you have none.” Others jumped to the poster’s defense, arguing that sitting at home doing nothing is far more hobby-less, and the thread spiraled into a debate over what actually counts as a “hobby” in the first place.

saying "walking" when someone asks about your hobbies is basically the textbook answer for having no hobbies.

So Love Live is where guys with no personality (無キャ, "no-charisma" types) end up, huh.

    Re: #7
If you're actually going out and walking a set distance on your own two feet, that counts as doing something.
The truly hobby-less ones are the people stuck at home, killing time in ways they couldn't even explain to anyone else.

Behold, the ultimate life form: a Love Live fan who's also a train-photography otaku (撮り鉄, "train shooter").

    Background and Discussion Points

“Love Live fan” (ラブライバー) is a nickname for fans of the Love Live! franchise, and on 5ch’s Love Live! board, fans lightly ribbing each other over hobbies and lifestyle habits is a daily occurrence. “Walking,” the target of criticism this time, is widely seen as the go-to answer for padding out a thin hobby list, since it requires no particular skill or achievement and anyone can claim it. On the other hand, some commenters credited the act of getting outside and moving one’s body, and pushed back by arguing that doing nothing at home is the truly hobby-less lifestyle — showing that people’s sense of what counts as a “hobby” varies widely. This article excludes replies whose main intent was to mock the original poster by name (including ones with attached images), and instead focuses on the exchange over how to define a “hobby.”
