  • ‘A Grown Man Using GATSBY Hair Wax?’ — NanJ Users Wage a Hair Care Civil War

A post reading “A grown man still using GATSBY or Mandom hair wax lol” set off a sprawling hair-care discussion on the NanJ (Livejupiter-style) board. GATSBY and Mandom are long-running staple brands mostly associated with teens and twenty-somethings, and there’s a running joke about still using them in your 30s and 40s. While plenty of users reported switching products as they aged — “I ended up with hair oil,” “I use Yanagiya pomade” — opinions split sharply over whether hard-hold wax actually harms scalp circulation and clogs pores, and the thread devolved into a fight over who had any real evidence.

    That's only a thing until you're pushing 30…
    6AnonymousSep 23, 2026 20:54
Wait, you still HAVE hair at your age? For real?
    8AnonymousSep 23, 2026 20:55

I'm 37 and I've stuck with GATSBY Moving Rubber Extreme Mat this whole time… guess that's not okay…
So what ARE you supposed to use once you hit a certain age?
    20AnonymousSep 23, 2026 21:08
Like anyone on NanJ actually uses hair product
Even the ones with hair have a messy mop and never trim their eyebrows either
    24AnonymousSep 23, 2026 21:10
Because eventually you won't need hair product anymore…

I'm also pushing 40 and still slicking it down with GATSBY's hard-hold stuff,
but as I've gotten older my hair's gotten seriously stiff and won't cooperate at all
I'm guessing pomade's the answer — somebody tell me what a middle-aged guy is actually supposed to use

but is there actually anything dangerous about it besides that?
    59AnonymousSep 23, 2026 21:33
    Re: #54
You're locking it into an unnatural position, so of course scalp circulation gets worse
    64AnonymousSep 23, 2026 21:35
    Re: #59
Locking hair in an unnatural position hurts scalp circulation????
What are you even talking about? There's no evidence for that
    65AnonymousSep 23, 2026 21:35
    Re: #59
Does it actually affect your pores?
Even facial hair you don't touch gets stiffer with age too — isn't that just body type and aging?
Though I guess if it's weakening the hair, fine, that's different
    57AnonymousSep 23, 2026 21:31
It's not that your hair got coarse from aging — it's that hard-hold product wrecked it and made it frizzy and rough.
That damage doesn't come back, so if you don't want to pile on more damage and go bald, quit the hair product
    61AnonymousSep 23, 2026 21:33

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The relationship between hair styling products and thinning hair comes up regularly even within the beauty industry, but there’s little medically established evidence that using wax or spray directly causes hair loss. The explanations flying around the thread — that “the scalp can’t breathe” or that products “penetrate via a liposome effect” — aren’t backed by rigorous cosmetic-science evidence either, and it’s worth noting the discussion proceeded with personal anecdotes and hearsay mixed in throughout. That said, stylists do point out that slathering product all the way down to the scalp, or failing to rinse it out thoroughly, can clog pores and worsen scalp conditions — so the “it’s a usage problem” point raised later in the thread was on the mark. Given that GATSBY and Mandom have long been marketed as brands for teens and twenty-somethings, the original poster’s underlying question — whether you should “graduate” from them as an adult — reflects the brands’ historical positioning.

  • Switch 2 Sales Show Signs of Recovery — 5ch: ‘At This Rate It’ll Overtake PS5 Next Year, Right?’

A thread on 5ch’s Console/Industry (“Geha”) board sparked debate over Switch2 and PS5 sales figures. The thread’s creator posted monthly sales numbers — 448,500 units in March, 241,600 in April, and 634,800 in May — and pointed out that momentum had slowed following May’s price hike. In response, replies pushed back, noting that Switch2 has kept beating the PS5 in the most recent weekly rankings, and that September sales have actually picked up as the post-Obon slump reversed, making it too early to call this a “slowdown” based on monthly data alone. The thread turned into a back-and-forth comparison war citing VGChartz estimates alongside Sony and Nintendo’s official quarterly earnings figures, with opinions split over how momentum will hold up heading into the year-end shopping season and next year’s lineup of major titles.

    27AnonymousSep 23, 2026 21:35
We're heading into the year-end shopping season, so it's still wait-and-see for now (´・ω・`)
Also, since everyone knows the price hike is the cause, they could fix this easily if they wanted to.
Basically, if they bundle a game or something to bring the effective price down, it'll start selling again.

The reason Nintendo isn't rushing to do that comes down to one thing: "But we're still outselling the PS5, right?"
In the first place, the moment they raised the price to ¥60,000 when the PS5 is only ¥55,000, that was them saying "There's no real rival, so we can take our time" — in other words, [they're not taking the competition seriously].

It's third parties, more than Nintendo, that seem to be having a genuinely rough time.
Even when they port games originally made for PC/PS5/Xbox over to Switch2, they don't sell all that well.
It doesn't have that "anything you release will sell" vibe that Switch1 had.
    89AnonymousSep 23, 2026 22:01
    Re: #77
That's because they completely ignored the Switch [1] the whole time.
If they think they can just drop something out of nowhere and have it sell without ever building a loyal customer base, that kind of thinking is worse than even Falcom's or Nippon Ichi's.
    83AnonymousSep 23, 2026 22:00

That was just the post-Obon rebound, that's all.
What's actually surprising is the PS5 — even after the GTA6 trailer dropped, it still can't recover from its 4-digit slump and is still flatlining.
    109AnonymousSep 23, 2026 22:07

Background and key points of this discussion

VGChartz, the source cited in the thread, is an unofficial estimate site, and its numbers can diverge from actual sales — worth keeping in mind. On the other hand, posts #41 and #51 cite figures based on Sony’s and Nintendo’s official earnings reports, so the nature of the numbers varies depending on the source. The debate essentially boils down to two points: (1) whether sales trends should be judged by monthly or weekly figures, and (2) whether the post-price-hike slowdown is just a temporary rebound from rush-buying, or a genuine, sustained decline. Some posters in the thread pointed out that sales have actually been trending upward since September, suggesting it’s hard to declare a firm trend from a single month’s numbers alone. The discussion also touches on how the year-end shopping season and next year’s lineup of major titles — the new Kirby game, Pokémon, and Xenoblade — are likely to shape sales momentum going forward.

The 46th National High School Quiz Championship (Nippon TV), broadcast on September 21, has become a hot topic on social media. Viewers were moved watching high schoolers compete in tests of knowledge and stamina across locations like Yokohama Stadium, Odawara Castle, and Hokkaido — but at the same time, the heavy use of “reaction cam” cutaways to the celebrity panel’s expressions, along with studio chatter asking contestants for their thoughts after every correct answer, sparked a wave of complaints that “the quiz itself barely comes through.” On 5ch’s Geinou/Sports News+ thread, discussion ranged from questioning whether the reaction cam is even necessary to comparisons with the production style of the old Trans-America Ultra Quiz era.

The 16 schools that made it through the qualifiers competed in tests of intellect and physical endurance across locations like Yokohama Stadium, Odawara Castle, and Hokkaido, and X (formerly Twitter) saw comments like “The bond between these high schoolers really moved me!” At the same time, though, this broadcast also drew comments like:

That said, it's its own kind of hard — stuck in that tiny box with barely anything to work with, you still have to say something funny or you're branded as bad at your job. Easy, but not a job anyone actually wants

    Background and Key Points

The High School Quiz has aired on Nippon TV since 1983, and the concept traces its roots back to the legendary Trans-America Ultra Quiz, which ran from 1977 to 1992. The central point of debate on the thread was the pros and cons of the “reaction cam” cutaways showing the celebrity panel’s expressions throughout the broadcast. Defenders pointed out that it’s become a standard technique for boosting ratings, while critics pushed back that it undermines immersion in the quiz itself. It’s also worth noting that reaction-cam cutaways aren’t unique to this show — they’re a technique used broadly across variety programming in recent years, so much of the frustration voiced here reflects a wider grievance with current TV production trends rather than an issue specific to this one program.

  • Capcom Exec’s ‘PS5 Is the Barrier’ Comment Sparks 5ch Slugfest Over What It Actually Meant

A thread on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry board titled “What game do you even have to release to make Switch 2 software sell?” kicked off with posters citing the poor performance of big Nintendo titles like Metroid and Mario Tennis. The discussion centered on a remark made by a Capcom executive in an interview with Nikkei Cross Trend: “The PS5 hardware costs about 80,000 yen, and factoring in the cost at purchase brings it to around 100,000 yen — that’s a barrier to adoption.” That comment — originally about the PS5 being the barrier — got twisted by part of the thread into the exact opposite claim, that the Switch 2 was the “barrier,” and things devolved into repeated rounds of “source?” as posters demanded proof.

    Re: #97
I said "since the Spotlight switch" — funny how that worked out lol

Background and key points of this discussion

At the heart of this story is how to interpret an interview Capcom gave to Nikkei Cross Trend about its sales strategy for “Monster Hunter Wilds.” The original comment was to the effect that “the PS5 hardware costs about 80,000 yen, and including related costs it comes to around 100,000 yen — a barrier to adoption, especially for younger consumers,” with the PS5’s price as the subject. Part of the thread, however, quoted this as meaning the opposite — that “Switch 2 is the barrier” — which set off a long back-and-forth of posters demanding a “source?” for that claim. On the Hardware/Industry board, this kind of quote-clipping and misreading spreads easily, and here too interpretations stayed split until someone posted the primary source (the article URL). The key things for readers to keep in mind: the subject of the original comment was “the price of the PS5,” not “Switch 2,” and Switch 2 launched in June 2025 at 49,980 yen — meaning its hardware price is actually lower than the PS5’s.

  • Ishin Weighs Taxing Pachinko Winnings, Debate Set for Year-End — 5ch: ‘Let Us Deduct Our Losses’

Word spread that Japan’s Ishin (Japan Innovation Party) plans to open internal discussions by year-end on a proposal to tighten taxation of pachinko winnings, sparking a lively debate on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” (anything-goes live chat) board. Under tax law, pachinko winnings are technically classified as “occasional income” and are supposed to be declared, but in practice only a tiny fraction of players actually pay tax on them. Commenters were split: some argued that if winnings get taxed, losses should be deductible too; others suspected Ishin was singling out the pachinko industry while pushing to legalize casinos; and some expressed hope the move would curb welfare recipients’ pachinko spending.

Japan Innovation Party may propose year-end debate on taxing pachinko players’ income

Under Japanese tax law, pachinko winnings count as “occasional income” — half of net annual profit, after expenses and a ¥500,000 special deduction, is technically taxable — but almost no one actually files a return on it. As part of a broader overhaul of gambling tax rules, Ishin is putting a spotlight on the issue and starting internal discussions aimed mainly at full-time pros and high-volume players. The focus is on tightening identity checks at cash-out and whether losses can be deducted against winnings; the industry is voicing concern, though the impact on casual hobby players is expected to be limited.

    Re: #125
Making it subject to taxation basically upgrades it to the status of state-sanctioned gambling, so it'll survive.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Under Japan’s income tax law, pachinko winnings are classified as “occasional income”: half of the amount left after subtracting necessary expenses and a ¥500,000 special deduction from annual profit is subject to tax. In practice, however, only a small fraction of players actually file returns on it, and the cash-out mechanism (the so-called “three-shop system”) has long made the real scale of winnings hard to track. What Ishin is reportedly considering is a plan to tighten taxation mainly targeting full-time players and big winners, with the impact on casual hobbyist players expected to be limited. Within the thread, opinions split between those arguing that losses should be deductible against winnings and those pointing out that a reporting system already technically exists. Some also voiced hope that stricter ID checks at cash-out would curb pachinko use among welfare recipients. It’s worth noting, though, that this is still at the stage of internal party discussion and has not yet taken shape as concrete legislation.

    #8 — Slam Dunk

I'll admit the art is great, but the pacing stays flat the whole way through and never really builds momentum.

The early chapters can't decide between a delinquent story and a basketball story, it makes no sense that Anzai is treated like some legendary coach, and that scene where the long-haired character has an emotional breakdown — treated as an iconic moment for some reason — left readers completely lost.

And the ending, where they lose partway through the national tournament, is really just a cancellation ending dressed up as a finale.

A manga that does nothing but explain its rules forever.

Idiots read this and go "whoaaa, so deep and complex!" but it's really just cluttered.

And even after you painstakingly decode the clumsy explanations, the author keeps retroactively bolting on new rules, so it all feels like wasted effort.

    #5 — YuYu Hakusho

A manga that distills everything bad about Jump series into one.
    That "live-in-the-moment energy" (lol)

It's just the same old Jump trick of stronger and stronger enemies showing up one after another, making the previous ones feel pointless.

And nobody seems to question why, right when the new arc kicks off, it suddenly turns into a rushed digest-style tournament where some random middle-aged guy who just showed up wins — that bizarre ending somehow never gets criticized.

In the end it was a manga propped up by fujoshi who only cared about the hot male characters and ignored the story entirely.

It's a mystery why the author gets hyped up so much online.

#4 — Phoenix (Hi no Tori)

Fans: "A story that alternates between the future and the past — amazing!!!"
    ↑
    So what? (lol)

If the story actually connected and came together as a whole, fine, but all it really does is force in a bunch of famous-sounding birds — it's just a loosely tied anthology of short stories.

    #3 — JoJo's Bizarre Adventure

There's barely any story at all.

Enemy shows up → beat them → enemy shows up → beat them.

    That's literally the entire loop.
What even is this, a board game?
And honestly, why don't the enemies ever just gang up and jump the main character's party all at once instead of coming at them one by one?

    #2 — One Piece

A manga where every line and every plot beat is way too predictable.
Every development and exchange exists purely as a setup to deliver a "Don!" sound-effect punchline panel, so the buildup drags on forever.

Reading this manga feels like watching an endless loop of a Dacho Club comedy skit (a Japanese comedy trio famous for a repetitive running gag).

    Background and Talking Points

Threads formatted as “the XX ranking has finally been revealed” are a recurring gimmick on 5ch, and the Live/Jikkyo boards in particular have seen similar posts pop up again and again over the years. True to form, replies here started questioning it early on, with comments like “where are all these people taking a recurring joke thread seriously coming from?” and “it’s all AI” — a sense quickly spread that this shouldn’t be read as genuine criticism. The poster themselves eventually caved under the backlash, admitting “getting ripped apart is rough on the mental,” and ultimately vanished without ever revealing the all-important #1 spot. Since opinions on these titles come down heavily to personal taste, what really drove the thread’s momentum wasn’t the ranking itself, but whether readers could recognize the "joke-thread" tone for what it was.

※This article is an excerpt and summary based on the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyo G) thread “Manga readers rank the popular manga that are honestly boring — the results are finally in wwwwwwwwwwwwwww.”

  • Kameda Kyonosuke Drops Split Decision to Sebastian Hernandez, the Man Who Gave Junto Nakatani Fits

In the featherweight 10-round main event of “3150FIGHT11” (September 23, Osaka’s Sumiyoshi Ward Community Center), a card promoted by Koki Kameda, his cousin Kyonosuke Kameda (27) faced Mexico’s Sebastian Hernandez (25) — the man who gave Junto Nakatani serious trouble — and lost by 1-2 decision. Since it was a home fight, opinions on 5channel were split between “he put up a better fight than expected” and “it was one-sided,” with some also questioning the scoring after only one of the three judges had Kyonosuke ahead.

The boxing promotion “3150FIGHT11,” run by former three-division world champion Koki Kameda (39), was held on the 23rd at Osaka’s Sumiyoshi Ward Community Center.

In the featherweight 10-round main event, Koki’s cousin and WBA world No. 7 in the division, Kyonosuke Kameda (27, MR), faced WBC world super bantamweight No. 6

Sebastian Hernandez (25, Mexico), losing a 10-round decision 1-2. He put up a strong fight against a tough opponent, but missed out on a second straight major upset.

    Re: #87
    So what?
That's just how boxing judging always goes
There's always some judge scoring the exact opposite way, year in and year out

Background and key points of this discussion

This bout took place at a self-promoted event in Osaka owned by Koki Kameda himself. His opponent, Hernandez, is a legitimate contender who this year took WBO world minimumweight champion Junto Nakatani to a razor-close decision — though this matchup was fought at featherweight. Since 10-round bouts are scored by three judges, the “1-2” result means only one of the three judges scored the fight in Kyonosuke’s favor. The Kameda family has a history of judging controversies that became a wider social issue during past world title bouts, and that memory is part of why questions about the scoring kept resurfacing in this thread. That said, no reporting has suggested anything improper about this particular decision, and opinions in the thread ranged widely — from “a close fight and a good showing” to “it was one-sided.” The round-by-round scoring breakdown hasn’t been made public, so which view is closer to the truth largely comes down to individual impressions from those who watched the footage.

  • Anthem Mix-Up Was a ‘Private Contractor’s Fault,’ Organizers Say — 5ch Fires Back: ‘This Is What 370 Billion Yen Buys’

In the men’s hockey match “South Korea vs. Bangladesh,” held ahead of the opening ceremony of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, an incident occurred in which North Korea’s national anthem was played instead of South Korea’s. At a press conference on the 23rd, the organizing committee explained that the anthem data for every participating country had been saved on the same device, and that the private contractor responsible for playback had sent out the wrong track — and apologized. With other troubles piling up, including major bus delays, criticism spread on 5ch over how the roughly ¥370 billion in total event operating costs was being spent, with comments like “they just keep blaming the contractor” and “isn’t the final check the organizing committee’s job?”

On the 23rd, the organizing committee addressed the string of troubles at the Asian Games, including the mixed-up national anthem and major bus delays.

On the 18th of this month, during the men’s hockey match “South Korea vs. Bangladesh” held ahead of the Asian Games opening ceremony, the staff member in charge mistakenly played North Korea’s anthem instead of South Korea’s.

At the press conference on the 23rd, Deputy Secretary-General Takaaki Osan of the organizing committee explained, “Because the anthem data for all participating countries was saved on the same device, the private contractor mistakenly sent out the wrong one,” and apologized.

    84AnonymousSep 23, 2026 20:55
    Re: #74
The athletes aren't at fault — the bus itself was 1 hour 15 minutes late.

Background and Key Points of This Story

The anthem mix-up at the hockey venue is said to have happened because the audio for every participating country was stored together on a single device, with a staff member manually selecting and playing each track. Outsourcing the sound and event operations of an international competition to a local private contractor isn’t unusual in itself — the real question is whether this was simply the contractor’s operational error, or a failure of the organizing committee’s oversight in not running a final check. On the thread, the dominant view was that “even if you outsource the work, ultimate responsibility still lies with the organizers,” and there was strong pushback against the organizing committee repeatedly pointing to “the private contractor” in its explanation. At the same press conference, alongside the anthem issue, officials also addressed the major bus delays, suggesting that delays in delegations’ arrivals had a knock-on effect on the whole schedule. Since the event’s total budget is said to run to roughly ¥370 billion, it’s easy for people to link that price tag to dissatisfaction with how the event is being run — though it’s worth being careful not to judge the quality of the operation on the cost alone.

On September 23, the final day of the Silver Week holidays, reports emerged that a shortage of gas stations has worsened around Hakone, with some residents traveling an hour each way just to fill up. The number of gas stations nationwide has already fallen to less than half its peak, with closures hitting mountainous areas and tourist destinations hardest. In the 5channel thread that picked up the story, voices urging a shift to EVs clashed with more cautious views arguing that charging infrastructure and the power grid can’t keep pace, while debate also broke out over the merits of consolidating depopulated areas into so-called “compact cities.”

Take the Noto Peninsula as an example — its population is:

    Wajima City: approx. 27,700
    Suzu City: approx. 13,200
    Noto Town: approx. 15,700
    Anamizu Town: approx. 7,800

That's only about 64,400 people combined.

Every municipality on the whole Noto Peninsula put together only adds up to the population of a single city, so we ought to be shrinking the inhabited area and consolidating — building compact cities.

In a Japan with a shrinking population, there's no need to force gas stations to keep operating at their current numbers.

I mean, barely anyone even lives there to begin with

The fact that a place like this still has 4 gas stations just shows how amazing Japan is

Background and key points of this discussion

The decline in gas stations comes down to high removal costs — underground tanks are expensive to maintain, and closing a station requires soil surveys including lead and heavy-metal testing. As commenters noted, gas sales alone are barely profitable; stations make their real money on ancillary services like vehicle inspections, tire changes, and car washes, which makes them hard to sustain in mountainous areas and tourist spots with few regular customers. In rural areas, agricultural cooperatives (JA) often double as fuel retailers, creating a structure that a simple switch to EVs wouldn’t fully resolve. Opinion in the thread split between those optimistic about an EV transition and those more skeptical, citing the rising cost of reinforcing the power grid and doubts about fast-charging technology, with debate also breaking out over the pros and cons of consolidating depopulated areas into so-called “compact cities.” Some exchanges involving political labeling have been excluded from this article.

  • “We Need a Peasant Uprising”: Rice Farmers Battered by Japan’s ‘Flip-Flop’ Agricultural Policy — Next Season a Blank Slate, Farm Closures on Pace for a Nationwide High

Rice farmers in Fukui Prefecture are in dire straits after the provisional payment (gaisankin) for Koshihikari rice plunged to 17,000 yen per 60 kg — 12,000 yen lower than last year — driven in part by the government’s massive release of stockpiled rice. One farmer says he’s facing a 20 million yen loss. The government has since moved to buy back stockpiled rice, but farmers have responded with anger — “too little, too late” — with some going so far as to say “we need a peasant uprising.” On 5ch, reactions clashed over who’s really to blame for the price collapse: some blamed the farmers themselves, others went after JA (the Japan Agricultural Cooperatives) and wholesalers, while still others argued it’s time to weed out small-scale farms.

Last year, in response to soaring rice prices, the government released huge quantities of stockpiled rice. As a result, the provisional payment made to Fukui Prefecture farmers this year has fallen to 17,000 yen per 60 kg of Koshihikari — down 12,000 yen from last year. A rice farmer in Fukui City who cultivates 50 hectares says the situation is dire: “We’re looking at a 20 million yen loss.” The government has now begun buying back stockpiled rice, but farmers are furious, calling the move “too late” and “not enough,” with some using the strong words “we need a peasant uprising.”

    Background and Key Issues

At the heart of this article is the volatility of the “provisional payment” (gaisankin), the benchmark price for rice transactions. Gaisankin is an advance payment that collection agents like JA make to farmers at harvest time, later settled based on supply and demand — which means that when the market swings wildly, farmers bear the brunt of it directly. Last year, the government released stockpiled rice in response to soaring prices; this year, the provisional payment has plunged in the opposite direction. In the thread, opinions split between those blaming farmers themselves for the price drop and those criticizing JA and wholesalers’ handling of the situation, with some even endorsing the idea of weeding out small-scale farmers. That said, the article’s claim that “closures are on pace for a nationwide high” isn’t broken down in detail in the original piece, so it’s worth being cautious about drawing a simple causal line between price swings and farmers leaving the industry.
