  • Hideo Kojima: “Sony Hasn’t Contacted Me Once Since Terminating the Contract”

Game creator Hideo Kojima revealed in an interview with IGN Japan that Sony has not reached out to him even once since terminating their contract. He says no reason was given for the cancellation either, recalling that he was informed of the final decision at a meeting in June. The 5ch thread sparked by these comments buzzed with speculation about the reasons behind the split — from the sales performance of the Death Stranding series to Sony’s strategy of prioritizing its first-party studios — with some pointing out parallels to other creators who’ve drifted away from PlayStation, such as Hironobu Sakaguchi and Toshihiro Nagoshi.

――You mentioned Sony didn’t explain the reason for the cancellation. Has there been any explanation since then?

No, none at all. I haven’t heard from them once since then. But I’m not fighting with Sony. We’re not at odds. What I want to say is just that we worked together for 30 years and built this relationship. So if this was going to be the conclusion, I wish I’d heard about it a little sooner. But at that meeting in June, they just gave us the final notice.

Like I said, my mind went blank, so I didn’t ask many questions. What was on my mind instead was, “What am I going to do with my company?” That’s what was going through my head at the time. I’ve always been a huge fan of Sony. I’ve used Walkmans forever, and all my cameras are Sony too. So I have no bad feelings toward Sony whatsoever.

It's business, so a falling-out is something both sides just have to accept.
Negotiating hard, getting cut loose as a result, and the side that gets cut feeling blindsided — that's all just how it goes.

But as the face of a company — especially a B2C one — that "poor me" post was fatal.

After a breakup, it should read:
"As reported, we have ended our relationship with Mr. XX.
This was by no means an acrimonious split — it was a decision made with mutual respect for one another.
We're deeply grateful for the support shown so far, and we hope you'll continue to warmly watch over both of us going forward."

    Not:
"In mid-June, the other side suddenly told me it was over.
In the three months since, I found a new partner.
    Don't worry about me."

Put it out like that and of course it blows up.

The thing is, from the very start Death Stranding 2 launched as a PS exclusive and only got a PC release later, multiplatform-only — that alone tells you they weren't even trying to sell it.

'Filth Island' (a derogatory nickname mocking Kojima's name, playing on '-shima' meaning island) sold 13 million with the original, while the sequel stayed a PS5 exclusive and the numbers didn't grow — that's your answer right there.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Kojima’s partnership with Sony began after he left Konami in 2015, continuing through Death Stranding 1 and 2 and into the new title PHYSINT. The fact that the reasons for the termination haven’t been disclosed is likely tied to how these kinds of business partnerships are often covered by non-disclosure agreements, meaning one side frequently has no obligation to explain itself. Within the thread, opinions clashed over how to weigh the Death Stranding series’ sales performance against the major losses at Sony’s own studios from titles like Concord and Marathon, with some pointing out parallels to other creators who’ve left PlayStation-affiliated companies, such as Hironobu Sakaguchi and Toshihiro Nagoshi. That said, it’s worth noting that the specific financial and business reasons behind the termination haven’t even been explained to Kojima himself, so the thread’s speculation remains just that — speculation.

It’s been almost a year since the original manga of ‘Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End’ went on hiatus. The anime has earned rave reviews, but the source manga remains on extended pause. The thread’s title teased a “return from hiatus,” but based on the actual comments from thread-watchers, nothing confirms that. In the thread, theories flew about the reason for the pause: some argued the story, originally conceived as short, got stretched out by the anime’s massive success until the author could no longer keep writing it, while others suggested the plot hit a wall early, right around the time the group reached the Demon King’s castle.

Probably just some vague, unspecified break.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

‘Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End’ became a massive topic thanks to its anime adaptation, but the source manga (serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday) ended up far more popular than originally expected — one thread comment claimed print runs went from an anticipated 700,000 copies to something on the scale of 10 million. Opinions on the reason for the hiatus split mainly into two camps: (1) that after the series became a hit, the editorial side pushed the author to stretch the story out, leaving him stuck on how to proceed, and (2) that the very structure of the story — a “fallen hero retracing her old journey” — was always suited to a short run, and the plot simply ran out of road around the time the group reached the Demon King’s castle and reunited with Himmel. One point readers can easily misread is that the anime’s polish doesn’t necessarily track with the pace of the source material — in fact, some noted that Season 2 of the anime couldn’t reach its climax because there wasn’t enough manga material to draw from. Note that although the original thread’s title teased a “return from hiatus,” nothing in the actual replies backs that up — the discussion was built entirely on the assumption that the hiatus is still ongoing.

On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board, a thread about the growing number of highly educated people entering the VTuber industry blew up. Posters cited concrete examples — a streamer with a PhD in science, others holding teaching licenses, and two Nijisanji talents said to hold medical licenses — with some declaring VTubing a “winner’s career” (a Japanese term for a job that puts you among life’s “winners”). At the same time, others questioned why these people aren’t using their expertise, and skepticism arose over how long the tip-based (superchat) economy can even last, turning the thread into a broader debate about the industry’s future.

Background and key points of this discussion

VTubers earn income through superchats (tips), merchandise sales, and corporate sponsorships, and top earners reportedly make far more than the average salaried employee. The thread pointed to streamers with science PhDs, teaching licenses, and even medical licenses, sparking debate between those who saw the influx of highly educated people as “winners not using their expertise” and those who lamented it as “wasted potential.” The rivalry between Hololive and Nijisanji over which agency has the upper hand was also tangled into the discussion, and it’s worth noting much of it is impressionistic, without solid statistical backing. There was also talk that as tipping has grown less generous than before, a shift toward merchandise sales is underway, hinting the underlying income structure itself may be changing. Note that the individual backgrounds (past jobs, education) raised in the thread are unverified claims based on posters’ comments, not confirmed facts.

  • Latest Hello! Project Height Chart Sparks Debate: 5ch Says ‘Juice=Juice Is Fudging Their Numbers’

A thread on a Hello! Project fan forum lit up over a debate about members’ heights. It started when Ichika Arisawa revealed on her own blog that her company health checkup put her at “155.1cm.” That led to an updated height list for Juice=Juice members, but it quickly drew suspicion that the officially published numbers were inflated — the so-called “saba yomi” (literally “reading mackerel,” Japanese slang for fudging a number). The thread also cited a news article noting that Japan’s average height hasn’t grown in recent years and has been overtaken by China and South Korea, stretching the height debate into international comparisons.

Height being low really is one reason Hello! Project doesn't catch on overseas
they don't even get noticed visually to begin with

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Idols’ officially published heights, including at Hello! Project, come from agency profiles and can differ from measured figures like health checkup results. The “saba yomi” (number-fudging) suspicions that circulated in this thread are just unofficial fan guesses based on things like thick-soled boots in stage outfits or comparisons with members of other groups — they’re not backed by verified evidence, which is worth keeping in mind. The claim that Japan’s average height has been overtaken by China and South Korea is based on an August 2026 Nikkei article, which points to nutrition and lifestyle changes as factors. Meanwhile, posts comparing Juice=Juice’s average height (around 162cm) to K-pop groups rely on users’ own calculations and comparison points, not official data. Since the numbers in this thread come from a mix of “official announcements,” “fan observation,” and “news articles,” it’s worth tracking which claim rests on which kind of source.

Posters shared side-by-side screenshots of each group’s TikTok pages along with concrete post-count figures for specific choreography trends (63,000, 117,000, 175,000, and so on), and opinion split over whether this comes down to a plain popularity gap, differences in how ‘sexy’ the presentation is, or simply the algorithm giving already-viral videos even more exposure.

Up until now, Hello! Project groups have danced to other idol groups' songs plenty of times.

And sure, groups they shared a bill with at joint concerts have sometimes danced along to Hello! Project songs together with them.

But other idol groups voluntarily dancing to Hello! Project songs on their own — and several groups doing it at once, no less — that's a genuinely big deal.

A lot of fans have already drifted away from Kawaii Lab, so nothing gets traction anymore unless money's been spent on the video.

    Background and Points of Debate

In recent years, TikTok has become a primary way for idol groups to reach new fans, and Hello! Project is no exception — each group’s official account has been ramping up choreography-video posts. What split the thread was whether the gap in view counts comes down to a plain difference in popularity, a difference in presentation (specifically, how much sex appeal is used), or a compounding algorithmic effect where videos that have already gone viral get pushed even harder. Some posters also pointed out that concert attendance figures don’t necessarily track with social media view counts. One thing readers could easily misread: the ‘post count’ figures cited in the thread refer to the number of videos posted using a particular song or dance, not the view count of Juice=Juice’s official account itself — those are different metrics. It’s also worth noting that all of these numbers come from posts on an anonymous message board, not official statistics published by TikTok or the talent agency.

The public corporation also took part in a ¥36.6 billion syndicated loan at the park’s opening, and just this past April added another ¥2 billion in financing alongside Shoko Chukin Bank and Bank of the Ryukyus, among others. With renewed financial support arriving in under six months, 5ch’s reaction split between the cynical view that “the opening-day boost was nothing but pent-up post-COVID travel demand” and voices pointing the finger at the park’s location and facility lineup itself.

The government-affiliated Okinawa Development Finance Corporation has entered final coordination to extend a fresh ¥3 billion loan to the “JUNGLIA Okinawa” theme park in Nakijin Village, Okinawa Prefecture. With the park continuing to run in the red, the funds will be provided as a bridge loan to keep cash flow going. The park’s operator plans to hold a shareholders’ meeting on the 25th to explain its financial situation.

The Okinawa public corporation took part in a ¥36.6 billion syndicated loan at the time of opening, and in April added a further ¥2 billion in financing together with Shoko Chukin Bank (the Central Bank for Commercial and Industrial Cooperatives) and Bank of the Ryukyus, among others.

That's a dull blade [pun: "Katana" is the name of Morioka's production company]. They'll probably just dot little character statues along the paths between attractions, like the Pokémon stuff at Yomiuri Land.
Having zero indoor, high-throughput attractions like Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, or the Haunted Mansion is the worst move you could possibly make.

Legoland managed to pull in the whole Tokai region's population by making annual passes cheap, but Okinawa just doesn't have the population base for an annual pass to work the same way.
An annual pass there would have to be limited to just the main island of Okinawa — not even all of Kyushu, not even the whole prefecture.

    Background and points of debate

JUNGLIA Okinawa is a dinosaur- and nature-experience theme park built by Katana, the company led by Tsuyoshi Morioka, known for turning around Universal Studios Japan. It opened in 2025 in Nakijin Village, Okinawa Prefecture. Multiple financial institutions, including the Okinawa Development Finance Corporation, had already arranged a roughly ¥36.6 billion syndicated loan before the park even opened; this latest ¥3 billion bridge loan follows an additional ¥2 billion loan in April, making it yet another round of support on top of that. Opinions on the thread were split over where to place the blame for the park’s struggles. Some pointed to the facility lineup itself — few large indoor attractions and low visitor throughput — while others noted that the recovery in visitor numbers has coincided with the broader post-COVID rebound in tourism demand, making it hard to credit the park’s opening itself. The tendency of regional financial institutions to keep lending out of consideration for the local economy was also raised alongside concerns about the park’s actual profitability.

  • Hello! Project Fan Club Numbers Jump 20,000 in a Year — Sign of a New Fan Boom? 5ch Weighs In

A post on 5ch’s “Hello! Project” board caught fire after someone noted that an acquaintance who’d just joined the Hello! Project fan club received a membership number in the 160,000s — prompting the observation, “About a year ago (around June 2025) the numbers were only in the 142,000s, so doesn’t that mean nearly 20,000 new members have joined?” Thread posters floated Juice=Juice’s popularity and buzz around new members as reasons behind the apparent surge in new fans, but opinions split on whether the jump in membership numbers actually reflects real membership growth, given the presence of people with multiple accounts and the handling of members who’ve quit. The discussion also branched into a debate over whether concert tickets should go digital.

These days you have to register your favorite group when you join, so they probably track it that way now.

Background and Key Points of Debate

Hello! Project membership numbers are issued in order of sign-up, so the gap between two numbers works as a rough gauge of how many people have joined. However, it’s never been officially disclosed whether the numbers of members who quit get reused, or how many of the new numbers belong to people holding multiple accounts just to secure concert tickets — so opinions in the thread were split, ranging from “the real figure is much smaller” to “even accounting for duplicate accounts, it’s still grown.” The debate over digital ticketing also split along lines of whether the holdup is Up-Front’s own equipment or logistics at regional venues, with comparisons drawn to other idol fandoms — though all of this remains speculation. Because membership numbers feed directly into ticket competition rates for FC-only shows and into merch sales, the topic draws attention as a proxy for a group’s drawing power. That said, it’s worth keeping in mind that the “20,000 more members” figure raised in this thread is just one person’s guess based on a single member’s registration number, not an official statistic.

Costs have really gone up. Eventually the mood shifted to 'well, price hikes can't be helped,' which made it easier to pass the cost onto customers — so it became fine to just go back to normal.

Japan's buying up naphtha from all over the world, yet it can only import 80% of last year's volume, and the price has doubled.

    Background and Points of Debate

Naphtha is a petroleum-derived raw material used to make plastics and inks, and its procurement cost is said to have risen due to Middle East conditions and a shift in import sources since spring 2026. Calbee reportedly adopted the black-and-white design after finding it difficult to secure the ink needed for package printing, and the project grew from there into asking manga artists to contribute hand-drawn illustrations. The thread repeatedly raised the question of “why are other companies still releasing products with normal packaging,” but since each company’s supply routes and the timing of passing costs on to customers haven’t been made public, much of the discussion doesn’t go beyond speculation. Claims about naphtha’s total import volume and price trends also varied from post to post, and it’s worth noting that the debate proceeded without any backing from official statistics.

  • New Group ‘JUICYJUICY’ Gets Buried by Juice=Juice in Search Results, Fans Say

New idol group JUICYJUICY has stirred up discussion on 5ch’s Hello! Project board by picking a name confusingly similar to the popular Hello! Project group Juice=Juice. Posters pointed out that searching the katakana rendering “Juicy Juicy” (ジューシージューシー) pulls up Juice=Juice instead, leading many to suspect the name was chosen deliberately to ride on the established group’s recognition. At the same time, some noted that Juice=Juice has unexpectedly surged in popularity on its own, further overshadowing JUICYJUICY — leaving the thread buzzing with the sense that the strategy, if it was one, had spectacularly backfired.

    1AnonymousSep 25, 2026 08:13
Their buzz exploded way more than anyone expected, and JUICYJUICY got swallowed up without a trace.
    3AnonymousSep 25, 2026 08:15
Yeah, because if you search the katakana “Juicy Juicy” (ジューシージューシー), Juice=Juice is what shows up in the results.
    4AnonymousSep 25, 2026 08:15

    Re: #64
If “Juice” hadn't already been taken, they probably would've made a group called “JJ” too.

Background and Key Points of Discussion

Not just in Hello! Project, but across the idol industry as a whole, it’s a recurring topic when a new group’s name is similar enough to an existing one that its search results get swallowed up. The JUICYJUICY and Juice=Juice case is a textbook example, and posters repeatedly pointed out that once rendered in katakana, the search results overlap almost completely. The central point of debate was whether the naming was a deliberate attempt to cash in on the established group’s name recognition, or simply a coincidence — opinions stayed split, with no consensus reached. The thread also touched on the general point that popularity among underground and regional idol groups can shift quickly, but unverified rumors about the internal circumstances of specific groups could not be confirmed, so this article does not cover them.

Note: This article is compiled and summarized from excerpts of the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “JUICYJUICY, the ASOBI-produced group that totally tried to cash in on Juice=Juice’s name wwwwwwwwwwwwwww.”

  • Japan Beats Uruguay 3-1 — Tatsuhito Kaneko’s “Disappointing Match” Verdict Sparks Debate

On September 24, 2026, Japan’s national soccer team beat Uruguay 3-1 in an international friendly at Q&A Stadium Miyagi, with Matsuki and Shiogai both scoring their first goals for the national team. Sports writer Tatsuhito Kaneko, however, argued in a column that for a country seriously aiming to win the World Cup, it was a “disappointing match.” On 5ch, the discussion focused less on whether that verdict was fair and more on Kaneko himself — his reputation as a “reverse jinx” (a commentator whose predictions tend to be wrong) and surprise at seeing his name again after so long dominated the thread more than the debate over the match itself.

[Soccer International Friendly: Japan 3-1 Uruguay (September 24, 2026, Q&A Stadium Miyagi)] We beat Uruguay, two-time World Cup champions and one of South America’s great old powers! And by 3-1, no less! Matsuki and Shiogai both scored their first goals for the national team! Wonderful!

But the only people entitled to celebrate that way are those who still think Japan’s only goal at the World Cup is reaching the knockout stage.

By the time the match passed the 90-minute mark, my honest impression was: disappointing match.

That's such a minor topic confined to some narrow corner of the internet — the general public watching the national team match has no clue, it's just youthful foolishness.
Though Shiogai himself reportedly said that Ueda, who calmly scored the third goal without any theatrics, looked more composed and cooler, so he's probably self-aware about it.
Point being, scoring one goal in a friendly is no reason to put on a little solo drama.

    Re: #48
Shiogai's still just a kid, after all.

    Background and Key Points

Tatsuhito Kaneko is a veteran writer who has covered Japan’s national team for years, known for columns that hand down harsh verdicts even after a win — on 5ch he’s earned the nickname “reverse jinx,” mocking how often his predictions and assessments miss the mark. In this thread too, reactions focused less on rebutting the column’s actual claim (that the performance wasn’t up to World Cup-winning standard) and more on surprise at seeing his name again after so long, plus commentary on his track record. This kind of “pile-on-the-columnist” thread tends to turn into a referendum on the writer’s reputation rather than a technical assessment of the match, so readers shouldn’t mistake the thread’s energy for a verdict on the game itself. It’s also worth noting that opinions on just how strong Uruguay actually was are divided, and the thread alone doesn’t offer objective confirmation either way.
