  • New ‘Unicorn Overlord’ Follow-Up ‘DAWNGAZER’ Launches 2028 — No Xbox Version

Takafumi Noma, who directed “Unicorn Overlord,” has announced a brand-new IP called “IGNISPHERE” together with Good Smile Company. The first title, the action RPG “DAWNGAZER,” is set to launch in 2028 for PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC (Steam). Noma reportedly left Vanillaware in March 2025 and has been developing the project at his new studio, Monochrome. On 5ch’s hardware board, opinions split over the lack of an Xbox version, doubts about carrying the PS5 generation all the way to 2028, and the reputation of the previous title, “Unicorn Overlord,” itself.

New IP “IGNISPHERE” Interview: “Unicorn Overlord” Director Takafumi Noma and Good Smile Team Up to Create a New World. First Title “DAWNGAZER” Is an Action RPG Where the Story Changes Based on Which Allies You Choose

A completely new IP brand, “IGNISPHERE,” from Takafumi Noma — known for “Unicorn Overlord” and other titles — and Good Smile Company has been announced.

Probably because it'll have backward compatibility with the next-gen console?
When PS5 launched, there were like 2-3 years of vertical multiplatform releases alongside PS4 too.

It's coming to Switch 2 too though (´・ω・`)

    It's more of a straight-up copy than I expected.
    Is this really okay, Vanillaware?

So it really was a falling-out with Vanillaware after all.

Vanillaware basically only makes one game at a time.
There's no telling how many years it'd be before it was Noma's turn again.
The only way to get his next idea out into the world was to quit.

It's Kadokawa, so if the 'Kado-Soviet' pattern kicks in (a jab at Kadokawa's heavy-handed business practices), there's a real chance it ends up digital-only across the board.

    Takafumi Noma

A creator who has worked on the development and design of numerous games, including as director, character designer, and scenario writer on 'Unicorn Overlord.' He left Vanillaware in March 2025 and launched 'IGNISPHERE' (the name of both the original brand and the development studio) at Monochrome Inc.

    Re: #25
Monochrome itself is actually a company founded by former Vanillaware staff who left before Noma did.
They made Grand Knights History at Vanillaware, left, and then put out its spiritual successor Grand Kingdom at Monochrome.
Grand Kingdom focused heavily on online PvP but had this garbage mechanic where you could lose important items, so it ended up with a worse reputation than History.
After that they couldn't put out any more in-house IP and basically kept the lights on doing subcontract work for FGO the whole time.

Unicorn Overlord had this 'even enemy characters keep joining your side!' hook, and I figured, ooh, each one must have some elaborate backstory… then the payoff was just 'we broke the brainwashing!' and I face-planted.

    Re: #33
In a game where you already have to rack your brain understanding the systems, an elaborate story just gets in the way.
If they make a second entry aimed at series fans, though, a proper, well-crafted story would be fine.

    Re: #104
There are actually plenty of games that never come to Xbox in the first place.

    Background and Talking Points

Takafumi Noma was a central figure at Vanillaware, working on titles like “Unicorn Overlord,” but the studio generally operates on a system where one director handles one project at a time, with no guarantee of when his next project would get greenlit — commenters in the thread cited this as the likely background for his going independent. His new development base, Monochrome, isn’t a company Noma founded himself; it’s an existing studio set up earlier by other former Vanillaware staff. Commenters pointed out that its flagship title, “Grand Kingdom,” got a worse reception for its online PvP elements than its predecessor “Grand Knights History,” and that afterward the studio mainly survived on subcontract work for other companies’ IP. The reason for skipping an Xbox version hasn’t been officially explained; the thread floated both a “lack of publishing capability” theory and a “some kind of deal” theory, though it’s worth noting both remain pure speculation.

  • Pachinko Ban Lasted Just 4 Days — 5ch: ‘That Money’s Basically Teetering on the Edge of a Pitfall’

In a thread titled “(´;ω;`) I’m drinking from morning till night” on 5ch’s Newsspeed VIP board, an anonymous poster live-blogged their day, starting the morning with sake and avocado as a snack. Despite having declared a month-long break from pachinko, they reversed course just four days later, announcing “starting today, I’m back at it” — drawing plenty of ribbing from other posters. Photos of meals kept coming, including hamburger steak, pork tonteki, and seared bonito, along with a celebratory toast after work. The down-to-earth, blow-by-blow narration mixed lingering pachinko cravings with back-and-forth over how much the poster was drinking, and the thread’s readers ended up reacting most to the poster’s quirky character.

    Background and Discussion Points

This kind of live-blog thread is a VIP board staple, with the poster adopting an emotive kaomoji as their persona and narrating their day in real time. What stands out here is that the poster’s declared “one-month break from pachinko” got walked back after just four days — the universal theme of how long a vow of abstinence actually lasts is what makes it land as comedy. The remark about hands shaking at the start of a drinking session should also be read as part of the running narration rather than a serious confession; this isn’t a thread about a genuine addiction crisis, so it shouldn’t be mistaken for one. The thread also featured plenty of back-and-forth teasing about sexual orientation, but this is the kind of formulaic joking common to the VIP board rather than genuine discriminatory remarks, so those exchanges have been left out of this article. Readers should keep in mind that the actual thread is considerably coarser and cruder than what’s presented here.

Partway through, someone called out participants for posting long movie catchphrases instead of actual “terms,” and the thread ended up mixing genuine vocabulary with dramatic film quotes.

The thread says "terms," so why do people keep posting whole movie lines?
    101AnonymousSep 25, 2026 13:04
In a yakuza fight, the blade always wins

Background and key points of this topic

Words like “hamon,” “zetsuen,” and “second-tier, third-tier affiliate groups” are terms actually used to describe the organizational structure and expulsion procedures of designated crime syndicates, and they turn up in news coverage too. Lines like “I’ll shove my hand up your ass…”, on the other hand, are said to originate from exaggerated dialogue in yakuza films and manga, and are a world away from real conversation. This thread never drew a clear line between the two: at post 87, someone pointed out, “The thread says ‘terms,’ so why do people keep posting whole movie lines?” — showing how the original intent of listing vocabulary got tangled up with people dropping long dramatic catchphrases. A question about whether a “chaka” (gun) or a “danbira” (blade) is stronger also drew the answer “the blade wins,” spinning off into a purely hypothetical debate with no real-world stakes about which weapon is tougher. What readers can easily misread is that none of this refers to real incidents or specific organizations — it’s wordplay, with posters trading catchphrases that have simply become fixtures of movie and manga culture.

  • Juice=Juice’s Popularity Boom: Is It All Down to Vocal Skill? 5ch: ‘Even Their Weakest Singers Beat Other Groups’ Best’

A thread titled “Juice=Juice’s success really comes down to their vocal skill, doesn’t it” popped up on 5ch’s Hello! Project board and drew a wave of responses. Juice=Juice has long been praised as a “group with strong vocal talent,” but opinions split over their recent surge in popularity: some argued it’s simply the payoff of years of accumulated skill, while others credited luck and timing—like a viral song or social media buzz. Some defended the group, saying “even their weakest members sing better than other groups’ top members,” while others pushed back, noting “there was a stretch when their vocal skill was just as strong and they still didn’t sell.”

    1AnonymousSep 25, 2026 12:11

All that accumulated skill is what led to this big hit now.
    7AnonymousSep 25, 2026 12:15
Historically speaking, vocal skill alone only gets you as far as staying inside "the village" (fandom slang for a small, hardcore-only fanbase, as opposed to real mainstream success).
    8AnonymousSep 25, 2026 12:17
There's no way they'd be this popular without their "shutter chance" (a lucky viral break referenced repeatedly in this thread).
    9AnonymousSep 25, 2026 12:18
Say what you will, but in a group that had Takagi and Kanazawa in it, there's an unspoken pressure not to stay bad at singing.
Irie's skills have shot up like crazy too, and Ishiyama—who was notorious as the group's "Gian" (Doraemon's screechy, tone-deaf character, fan slang for an off-key singer) back in her trainee days—keeps getting handed major parts now.
    10AnonymousSep 25, 2026 12:18
Before their big breakout ("Moremi," fan slang for their viral hit/moment), back when their vocal skill was at the same level, they were even less popular within the hardcore fandom than Ocha Norma, and their Budokan show had to be propped up by "Rosy" (fandom nickname, exact reference unclear).
    22AnonymousSep 25, 2026 12:27

Still, as a big, stable group with no graduations, they'd already been putting up solid, consistent results.

    31AnonymousSep 25, 2026 12:32
Their breakout hit ("Moremi") owes a lot to songwriter/producer Yamazaki Aoi, but the fact that new fans dig into the back catalog and go "oh, this old song's great too, and this one"—that's because Juice=Juice genuinely has the chops.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Since its formation, Juice=Juice has been praised as a “group with strong vocal talent,” and the thread’s opinions split between those crediting that accumulated skill and those attributing the group’s recent surge in popularity mainly to a viral song or social media buzz (referred to in the thread as “Moremi” and “shutter chance”). The former camp points to things like “even Juice=Juice’s lower-ranked members sing better than other groups’ top members” and “new fans are enjoying even their older songs,” while the latter counters that “there was a period when their vocal skill was just as strong and they still didn’t sell” and that “whether a song goes viral matters more.” Note that the thread never clearly specifies which songs or events “Moremi” and “shutter chance” actually refer to—they appear to be shorthand understood within the Hello! Project fan community, which may make them hard to follow for readers unfamiliar with the fandom. The question of whether talent or buzz drives popularity is also a recurring debate throughout idol culture more broadly.

  • AI Images Slammed as ‘Just Swapped Characters’ Draw Pushback — 5ch: ‘Humans Are the Same, Just Swapped Genes’

A casual chat thread on 5ch’s “Anything Goes Live” board turned into a lively debate over how to judge AI-generated images. One poster claimed “AI images are all the same, they just swap out the character,” prompting pushback like “Humans are the same too, just with different genes” and “Even with the same look, motivation changes completely depending on the character.” The thread eventually settled on the take that “that criticism might’ve held up three years ago, but the technology has moved on since then.” The conversation also drifted through plenty of other trivial banter — a poster bragging about his girlfriend’s looks, jokes about a caution label written in Kansai dialect, and confusion over why the thread doesn’t display poster IDs — building into the kind of scattershot buzz typical of the board.

    Background and Talking Points

Boards like “Anything Goes Live” (nandemo jikkyo) aren’t built around a single topic — they’re defined by a chain of off-the-cuff posts, and this thread is a textbook example. The exchange about AI-generated images is easier to follow once you consider how rapidly image-generation quality and expressiveness have improved over the past few years. AI art used to be criticized as “mass-produced,” with similar compositions and faces even when the prompt changed, but as models have improved, they now reflect prompt differences much more faithfully — which is likely what’s behind the comment referencing “how it looked three years ago.” On the other hand, these live-discussion threads tend to drop the context between posts, making it hard for readers to follow why an image was suddenly posted or how a spat got started. Since this thread also included some personal insults and baseless assumptions, those exchanges have been left out of this article.

  • Rice with Okonomiyaki? “No Way,” Say 5ch Users — “Kansai People Just Eat It With Sauce”

On a 5ch livestream discussion board, a post claiming “Rice with ramen, sure — but rice with okonomiyaki? No way” sparked a wider debate about pairing rice with flour-based dishes. Commenters pointed out regional differences: Kansai-style okonomiyaki uses more cabbage and comes out fluffy, while Kanto-style has a higher flour ratio and tends to be denser. Even some Osaka natives admitted that pairing takoyaki with rice feels off to them. The discussion expanded to other regional food customs — sweet red bean paste over rice, deep-fried potato skewers, and rice with yudofu (boiled tofu) — with opinions on what “goes together” splitting sharply depending on where people grew up.

    Re: #13
    Right?
When did that even start spreading?
    18AnonymousSep 25, 2026 12:02
Kanto-style okonomiyaki uses a lot more flour,
so it usually comes out flat and dense —
    more like eating solidified batter.

Kansai-style, on the other hand, is mostly cabbage with flour just acting as a binder, so it's thick and fluffy.

Whether it goes with rice or not probably has something to do with that difference.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Pairing flour-based dishes like okonomiyaki and takoyaki with rice is a perennial topic that highlights food culture differences between Kansai and the rest of Japan, and this thread is very much part of that tradition. In Kansai, households often served rice alongside okonomiyaki out of a practical concern that the dish alone wouldn’t be nutritionally balanced, whereas in other regions there’s a stronger sense that it should be eaten on its own — with even Osaka natives saying that pairing takoyaki with rice is “something tourists tend to do,” revealing a gap between how locals see the custom and how outsiders perceive it. The thread also saw pushback when one poster described eating sweet red bean paste as a side dish with rice as a “Northern Kanto-only” custom, only for another poster who was also from Northern Kanto to say they’d never heard of it — a reminder that so-called “regional trivia” often reflects differences between individual households or generations rather than a truly universal local habit.

  • Post About Quitting Hobbies and Spending for NISA Sparks Backlash — Some Call It ‘Just an Excuse’

A post on 5ch’s “Live News G (Anything Goes)” board describes how, after starting Japan’s new NISA tax-free investment program, the poster quit weekend pachinko-slots, sold off a motorcycle and camera that used to be hobbies, and stopped upgrading their iPhone every cycle. The money saved, they say, now goes into high-dividend stocks and index funds. The thread sparked a values debate that kicked off with “what’s the point of having money once you’re old?” — opinions split over the balance between spending and building assets, with some arguing a pension plus investing surplus income is plenty, others sharing how their urge to spend shrank as their savings grew, and still others bluntly calling it just an excuse to justify a spending habit.

Forget "NISA-poor" — spare cash and material desire are just inversely related. Once you have money, you start thinking "I can buy it anytime later, so it's fine for now," and before you know it you don't even want it anymore. Of course, if you still want something after all that time, you go ahead and buy it.

Up until your early 30s you don't need savings — just spend it. If you don't have kids, having money as an old geezer is genuinely meaningless. The return you get from spending money (things like a sense of accomplishment) drops to like a tenth of what it is when you're young.

Is NISA's influence really that huge?

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The term “NISA-poor” spread online as slang describing a state where, after Japan’s new NISA program expanded its lifetime tax-free investment allowance starting in 2024, people prioritize their contributions so heavily that they end up cutting out everyday pleasures. The program itself doesn’t force anyone to scrimp — how much to contribute is entirely up to the individual. What split the thread was a single question: is sacrificing the present for future peace of mind the right choice? Some pushed back, arguing that a pension payout plus regular savings already covers retirement, while others shared their own experience that assets and material desire move in opposite directions. A point readers can easily misread is that even though the original poster calls themselves “poor,” their finances aren’t actually in trouble — it was simply a deliberate choice to cut hobby spending and redirect it into investments.

The slip-up sent 5ch down a rabbit hole of place-name trivia: why is Japan’s “Chugoku” region, which has nothing to do with China, called “Chugoku” (literally “middle kingdom”) in the first place? Commenters traded competing theories about the origins of the “San’in” and “Sanyo” sub-regions and ancient geographic divisions.

    Re: #34
This one's easy (´^ω^`) — for the Chugoku mountain range,
the north side (Tottori~Shimane) gets less sunlight, so it's "San'in" (mountain shade),
the south side (Okayama~Hiroshima) gets more sun, so it's "Sanyo" (mountain sun).

    Chinese naming convention:

Basic knowledge if you've studied world history — Chinese city names are full of yin/yang once you count the obscure ones.

Even China's own "Zhongguo" ("middle kingdom") has been in use as a name since ancient times.

    Re: #82
It seems like it wasn't so much used as a "country/region name" — more that "Chugoku" was used to mean "within the realm."

    Background and Talking Points

The name “Chugoku region” became a topic of discussion thanks to this on-air slip, but even within the thread, no single theory won out. Several explanations circulated side by side: that the area sat midway between the Kinai region and the Dazaifu government office in Kyushu; that it ties into the Chinese “yin-yang” naming convention (which splits place names into “shade” and “sun” based on position relative to mountains and rivers); and that “Chugoku” was originally used in ancient Japan simply to mean “within the realm.” None of these were presented as settled fact — they were just individual opinions posted in the thread. One point readers can easily get wrong is that the name “Chugoku region” has no direct historical connection to the country name of today’s People’s Republic of China, and NHK’s slip-up stems from exactly that kind of confusion. Some commenters in the thread suggested that because weather forecasters routinely say “Chugoku region” on the job, whoever was reading the script simply mixed it up out of habit. Comments touching on political topics — such as opinions of Takaichi, the “Shina” epithet for China, or claims of Korean origin — were excluded from this article.

  • Hideo Kojima: “Sony Hasn’t Contacted Me Once Since Terminating the Contract”

Game creator Hideo Kojima revealed in an interview with IGN Japan that Sony has not reached out to him even once since terminating their contract. He says no reason was given for the cancellation either, recalling that he was informed of the final decision at a meeting in June. The 5ch thread sparked by these comments buzzed with speculation about the reasons behind the split — from the sales performance of the Death Stranding series to Sony’s strategy of prioritizing its first-party studios — with some pointing out parallels to other creators who’ve drifted away from PlayStation, such as Hironobu Sakaguchi and Toshihiro Nagoshi.

――You mentioned Sony didn’t explain the reason for the cancellation. Has there been any explanation since then?

No, none at all. I haven’t heard from them once since then. But I’m not fighting with Sony. We’re not at odds. What I want to say is just that we worked together for 30 years and built this relationship. So if this was going to be the conclusion, I wish I’d heard about it a little sooner. But at that meeting in June, they just gave us the final notice.

Like I said, my mind went blank, so I didn’t ask many questions. What was on my mind instead was, “What am I going to do with my company?” That’s what was going through my head at the time. I’ve always been a huge fan of Sony. I’ve used Walkmans forever, and all my cameras are Sony too. So I have no bad feelings toward Sony whatsoever.

It's business, so a falling-out is something both sides just have to accept.
Negotiating hard, getting cut loose as a result, and the side that gets cut feeling blindsided — that's all just how it goes.

But as the face of a company — especially a B2C one — that "poor me" post was fatal.

After a breakup, it should read:
"As reported, we have ended our relationship with Mr. XX.
This was by no means an acrimonious split — it was a decision made with mutual respect for one another.
We're deeply grateful for the support shown so far, and we hope you'll continue to warmly watch over both of us going forward."

    Not:
"In mid-June, the other side suddenly told me it was over.
In the three months since, I found a new partner.
    Don't worry about me."

Put it out like that and of course it blows up.

Kojima only went public because of the project handover — apparently he was actually cut three months ago.

The companies' positions are just too different —
a wholly-owned subsidiary versus an outside business partner.

"Protecting" the in-house studios (via layoffs).

Even PlayStation fans have caught on that SIE is a sinking ship,
flailing around trying to lighten the load just to delay the inevitable a little longer.

    Sakaguchi, who lost FF, and
Kojima, who lost MGS — they really overlap, huh.
Guess no matter what gets said, you're supposed to grit your teeth and cling to the company.

Same with Nagoshi, who lost Like a Dragon (Yakuza).

What they all have in common, without exception, is being 'creators' who got hyped up during PlayStation's heyday.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Kojima’s partnership with Sony began after he left Konami in 2015, continuing through Death Stranding 1 and 2 and into the new title PHYSINT. The fact that the reasons for the termination haven’t been disclosed is likely tied to how these kinds of business partnerships are often covered by non-disclosure agreements, meaning one side frequently has no obligation to explain itself. Within the thread, opinions clashed over how to weigh the Death Stranding series’ sales performance against the major losses at Sony’s own studios from titles like Concord and Marathon, with some pointing out parallels to other creators who’ve left PlayStation-affiliated companies, such as Hironobu Sakaguchi and Toshihiro Nagoshi. That said, it’s worth noting that the specific financial and business reasons behind the termination haven’t even been explained to Kojima himself, so the thread’s speculation remains just that — speculation.

  • One Year Since Frieren’s Manga Went on Hiatus: Thread-Watchers Wonder “Did He Run Out of Story?”

It’s been almost a year since the original manga of ‘Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End’ went on hiatus. The anime has earned rave reviews, but the source manga remains on extended pause. The thread’s title teased a “return from hiatus,” but based on the actual comments from thread-watchers, nothing confirms that. In the thread, theories flew about the reason for the pause: some argued the story, originally conceived as short, got stretched out by the anime’s massive success until the author could no longer keep writing it, while others suggested the plot hit a wall early, right around the time the group reached the Demon King’s castle.

Almost a year now with nothing happening.

Doesn't make any sense to stop a series that's basically a money tree.
    62AnonymousSep 25, 2026 11:28
    Re: #2
Probably got dragged so far off the original plan that he doesn't even know how to write it anymore.
    79AnonymousSep 25, 2026 11:40
    Re: #2
The story basically starts from a point where the tale is already "over," so
it probably hit a wall pretty early on.
It was supposed to be about heading to where the Demon King's castle stood and meeting Himmel there,
but partway through it jumped to the past and she met Himmel that way instead.
    3AnonymousSep 25, 2026 10:49
He still doodles the occasional illustration, but the manga itself has run out of gas.
    4AnonymousSep 25, 2026 10:50
Can't help it if you just can't think of a story anymore — same as that guy over at Weekly Shonen Jump.
    5AnonymousSep 25, 2026 10:50
Maybe he hit some unavoidable, fatal plot hole in the source material?
    6AnonymousSep 25, 2026 10:51
If it doesn't come back before the "Golden Land" anime arc wraps up, it's pretty much done for.
    8AnonymousSep 25, 2026 10:52
Story-wise, it probably was never meant to run this long — but once it got popular, the editors probably forced him to stretch it out.
    13AnonymousSep 25, 2026 10:54
    Re: #8
Sounds like it'd have worked better as done-in-one chapters that jump ahead by decades each time.
    87AnonymousSep 25, 2026 11:46
    Re: #8
Yeah, it was a "one-and-done" premise from the start — the kind of gag that only really lands once.
    9AnonymousSep 25, 2026 10:53
Wasn't the author kind of buckling under how popular it got?
If you plan for something to sell around 700K copies and it hits 10 million instead, yeah, you'd buckle too.
    11AnonymousSep 25, 2026 10:53
Pretty sure there was some fight going on where nobody could even tell who was supposed to benefit.
    12AnonymousSep 25, 2026 10:54
It was probably just a one-shot gimmick to begin with.
    14AnonymousSep 25, 2026 10:55
They've got no choice but to put a staff writer under the original author at this point.
Bringing Aura back to life is bound to cause friction.

When do we get to see the Holy Maiden's story? 🥺
    20AnonymousSep 25, 2026 10:58
The anime's just really well made — the manga itself was never that impressive to begin with.

Same pattern as Demon Slayer, but credit where it's due — Demon Slayer's author actually stepped up in response to the anime.

Sunday's editorial desk: "Bring Aura back to life! Stretch the story out!!!"

That's probably what sent him into a depression.

If it's Weekly Shonen Sunday, that's entirely believable.

Wonder what the anime's gonna do once it burns through all the manga material — though there's probably still a fair bit left to adapt.

Just throw in some anime-original filler, like Frieren going out to get her driver's license.
    64AnonymousSep 25, 2026 11:28
Honestly, the anime's just polished — there's nothing especially notable about the source manga itself.
    69AnonymousSep 25, 2026 11:32
    Re: #64
The early part was good, though —
it's about one of the now-retired heroes, an elf, retracing that old journey while reflecting on those days and coming to understand how humans think.
    68AnonymousSep 25, 2026 11:31
If they were gonna do the whole "lifespan" angle, I figured the apprentices would end up dying off pretty quickly.
    70AnonymousSep 25, 2026 11:33
    Re: #68
Yeah, the whole point is that elves and humans experience time differently.
Even Fern said she'd need to set a time limit if she were going to stay somewhere to study.
    83AnonymousSep 25, 2026 11:43
    Re: #68
I bet he originally meant to go all the way with that — maybe he even had a vague plan for Fern to get married, have kids, and eventually meet her grandchildren.
But as the series grew popular enough to become a flagship title, the characters got too well-known and beloved for him to actually pull that off.

The One Piece one-shot is Romance Dawn, right?
Seeing terms like "Morgania" and "Piece Main" in there (leftover names/concepts from the original prototype) made me think "oh, this isn't gonna work."

    113AnonymousSep 25, 2026 12:04
    Re: #111
There just wasn't enough manga material banked up, so Season 2 couldn't get anywhere near the good part.
    112AnonymousSep 25, 2026 12:02
I bet he started the story without ever really working out what the Demon King is actually like, what kind of group the Demon King's army even is, or where that army stands among demonkind as a whole.
Then partway through he tacked on the idea that the Demon King was trying to understand humans, which broke the consistency and made it impossible to keep writing.
    122AnonymousSep 25, 2026 12:11
    Re: #112
Weekly serialization is the kind of thing you're supposed to push through on momentum without worrying too much about consistency — but Frieren's author is probably too much of a perfectionist to just wing it like that.

Probably just some vague, unspecified break.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

‘Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End’ became a massive topic thanks to its anime adaptation, but the source manga (serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday) ended up far more popular than originally expected — one thread comment claimed print runs went from an anticipated 700,000 copies to something on the scale of 10 million. Opinions on the reason for the hiatus split mainly into two camps: (1) that after the series became a hit, the editorial side pushed the author to stretch the story out, leaving him stuck on how to proceed, and (2) that the very structure of the story — a “fallen hero retracing her old journey” — was always suited to a short run, and the plot simply ran out of road around the time the group reached the Demon King’s castle and reunited with Himmel. One point readers can easily misread is that the anime’s polish doesn’t necessarily track with the pace of the source material — in fact, some noted that Season 2 of the anime couldn’t reach its climax because there wasn’t enough manga material to draw from. Note that although the original thread’s title teased a “return from hiatus,” nothing in the actual replies backs that up — the discussion was built entirely on the assumption that the hiatus is still ongoing.
