Canned Coffee or Pocari Sweat? 5ch Debates the Right Treat for Job-Site Workers

From our other sites

The story

A thread titled “What’s the right treat to bring workers at a job site?” went up on the 5ch message boards, drawing a flood of suggestions ranging from canned coffee and Pocari Sweat to kabuki-age rice crackers and Toraya’s premium yokan. With temperatures dropping as November set in, practical points came up too, like whether to go hot or iced, and how hard snacks tend to be hit-or-miss depending on personal taste. Meanwhile, some shared stories about how supervisors who hand out pricier drinks like Pocari Sweat tend to get a better reputation, while others argued that since craftsmen prefer expensive bentos and cigarettes, the snacks handed to them should be high quality too — leaving the thread divided over whether price or sentiment should come first.

It's the thought that counts
Anything works
13AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:28
No coffee — it stains your teeth yellow
15AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:32
Years ago, in the middle of summer, I was sent to buy drinks for the boss, the client, and myself,
but I accidentally grabbed one 'hot' one and handed out all three anyway
sure enough, nobody wanted the hot one, so I ended up drinking it myself
16AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:32
Not sure, but since it's November I've been going with the heated drinks from the convenience store
If someone wants something cold there's a vending machine… though the vending machines don't have hot ones yet… I dunno though…

Something with a long shelf life, that keeps at room temperature, and comes individually wrapped
18AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:34
Gotta be Osama Rusk (king's rusk) crackers
19AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:36
It really is about the thought
though plenty of people will still bite your head off complaining if you try lol
20AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:37
For craftsmen, maybe braided cords or hairpins
or shamisen strings?
23AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:41

My go-to for drinks plus a little extra is kabuki-age rice crackers, but is there something better? Maybe a big bag of Alfort cookies instead?
24AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:42
You need something salty, so Happy Turn crackers
25AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:43
At meeting spots or waiting areas where they usually have Alfort or Le Mande, finding a Choco Pie in there makes you feel like you scored
26AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:43
Hard snacks aren't for everyone

Re: #1
Not sure what kind of job site you've got, but
I stopped by a convenience store and grabbed some Choco Pies and random drinks
and when the part-time female college students were wrapping up for the day, I handed them out saying 'figured you'd want something sweet when you're tired'
and it went over incredibly well
28AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:47
When it's cold out, a cold drink might upset your stomach,
so this time of year I can never decide between hot or iced
31AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:52
When we had someone come fix our gate, my mom didn't know what she was supposed to offer them,
so she put out 10 500ml bottles plus senbei, cookies, Choco Pies, Hi-Chew, monaka — basically a mountain of stuff for the two workers
and apparently they ate it all before leaving
I said 'didn't they just take it home with them?' but
it had all ended up as trash in the bin she'd set out, so they really did eat every bit of it

Starbucks' Joyful Medley Strawberry Creamy Tea Latte
37AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:55
Coffee, tea, Pocari Sweat
39AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:58
Pocari alone costs more than the rest, so it's kind of a hassle
If you're matching the price range of something like Oi Ocha, Pocari's out, and you'd end up with something like Green Dakara instead
40AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:59
Drinks that are conventionally served neither hot nor cold, but at room temperature (red wine, whiskey, etc.)
41AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:59
Craftsmen tend to buy pretty pricey bentos and cigarettes, so go with nice snacks too
42AnonymousNov 5, 2026 13:00
I'm a subcontractor so I deal with all kinds of site supervisors, but the ones who hand out Pocari as a treat tend to be the good ones

or at least that's the impression I get
44AnonymousNov 5, 2026 13:03
This time of year, maybe hot Pocari?
46AnonymousNov 5, 2026 13:05
It's not that cold yet, but in winter a warm drink is really appreciated
Sometimes I don't drink it right away because it'll make me need the bathroom, but it doubles nicely as a hand warmer
48AnonymousNov 5, 2026 13:10
Pocari's pricey so it's appreciated, but not everyone actually wants to drink it, right?
49AnonymousNov 5, 2026 13:19
Once in the middle of the night I ate a nikuman (steamed pork bun) the supervisor gave me and it turned out insanely spicy
50AnonymousNov 5, 2026 13:28
Sometimes in summer someone randomly hands you a Garigari-kun ice pop, right? What's that about
51AnonymousNov 5, 2026 13:40
Bottled tea
In my own personal research, Dydo and Ayataka are the best
56AnonymousNov 5, 2026 13:59
With hot Oi Ocha there's this trap where the 500ml and 350ml(?) bottles get mixed together, what's with that
and somehow the smaller one is sometimes even pricier
60AnonymousNov 5, 2026 14:19
For drinkers, booze is obviously the best gift

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Giving treats to workers at construction sites and similar job sites is a long-standing custom in which clients or neighboring residents show appreciation for the laborers, and canned coffee or snacks have traditionally been the go-to choice. The thread split between those who felt a cheap, casual gift is plenty, and those who argued that choosing something a bit more upscale, like Pocari Sweat or a premium bento, tends to earn a better reputation. With the seasons changing, many commenters also struggled over whether to choose hot or cold drinks, and several pointed out that hard snacks and pricier drinks are the kinds of items people’s preferences differ on most. A recurring theme throughout the responses was that a treat isn’t automatically appreciated — the real point lies in the effort of considering the recipient’s condition and tastes. That said, it’s worth noting this is simply a collection of individual anecdotes from an anonymous message board, and no industry-wide standard or official etiquette actually exists.
