The story

Jesús de Miguel (30), a forward for Tenerife in Spain’s Segunda División, lost consciousness and was rushed to the hospital after opposing goalkeeper Jesús Owono’s knee struck him in the chest as he charged toward goal during the match against FC Andorra on the 2nd. The match was called off during second-half stoppage time, and the club initially described his condition as “serious but stable” — but it later took a turn for the worse, and his death was announced on the 3rd. On 5ch, discussion of the match footage split between posters who suspected negligence, arguing “the goalkeeper’s knee came out first,” those who saw it as an unavoidable collision, and others voicing concern for the goalkeeper’s own future.

Tenerife announced on the 3rd that forward Jesús de Miguel had passed away. He was 30.

De Miguel had taken the field for the Segunda División match against FC Andorra on the 2nd. But as he charged toward goal, opposing goalkeeper Jesús Owono’s knee struck him in the chest. He lost consciousness on the spot and was rushed to the hospital. The match itself was called off during second-half stoppage time.

Tenerife subsequently stated that his condition was “serious but stable,” adding that “the club’s medical staff are at the hospital and will share new information as it becomes available.” However, his condition suddenly worsened. De Miguel passed away. The club released the following statement.

Re: #4
The keeper flat-out stuck his knee out and barreled in
That's manslaughter

The teammate who leaned in to check on him covered his face

And this doesn't count as any kind of crime? That's terrifying

Hope the keeper's mental state is okay

He's done for
This wasn't just incidental contact — it was a straight-red, reckless challenge that killed a man

Does the guy who did this get arrested?

Re: #9
It happened during play, so it probably won't count as negligent homicide

Still, soccer, American football, and rugby rack up a lot of deaths
There was even a guy who died from heading the ball too much

Soccer really only breeds hatred, anger, and misery
The world doesn't need it

Died from taking a knee to the chest?

That's basically a flying knee
Toshi's the real master of knee strikes (likely a nod to a famous fighter/wrestler known for knee strikes)

Same as pro wrestling or boxing

Re: #19
You don't really hear about pro wrestlers dying from a hard shot to the chest area
They take some brutal hits though
Feels like the fatal accidents are overwhelmingly from blows to the head

Re: #32
In boxing, even if your opponent dies you don't get arrested, right?
That's a classic example that comes up in law studies

Re: #32
They condition for that kind of hit because they take it a lot
If a boxer who hasn't trained his legs took a pro-level low kick, he wouldn't survive even one

The keeper doesn't even show the slightest concern for the guy after kicking him like that

Re: #81
He was sent off by the ref instantly, and he himself clearly knows he's 100% at fault
Of course he leaves the pitch right away — sticking around only causes more trouble

Re: #81
He was getting sent off regardless, so he just walked off on his own. He had no idea the other guy was in serious trouble, so it's not like he meant to do it. It just landed in the wrong spot. This kind of contact is just normal in soccer.

Worried about the keeper's mental state
Hope he gets properly looked after

He'll carry it as atonement, watch over the forward's son, and keep grinding until he becomes a legend — he'll be fine

Baseball really is the better sport precisely because it's safe
They wear helmets, defense is just fielding the ball, and even on offense you're mostly resting in the dugout

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This was a fatal accident during a sporting match, and whether in-play contact translates directly into criminal liability was a point the thread was split on. Generally, accidents arising from contact that falls within what the rules permit are treated as a “foreseeable risk of competition” and rarely lead to negligent homicide charges — a tendency that’s even stronger in sports like boxing that carry inherent danger. On the other hand, there was footage that appeared to show the goalkeeper’s knee coming out first, and quite a few commenters were quick to call it “rough play.” The fact that the match itself was stopped during second-half stoppage time hints at just how serious the situation was. One point readers can easily get wrong is that being sent off or apologizing doesn’t by itself determine criminal liability — the final call will depend on any investigation and ruling from the football association. As for the goalkeeper himself, the thread had plenty of concern about his future, including the possibility of retirement and the psychological toll.
