Friday Night VIP Quiz Showdown — 5ch Weighs In: ‘It’s Yamashita Shunpeita, Right?’

From our other sites

The story

Every weekend on 5ch’s News VIP board, a regular buzzer-style quiz thread is held. Hosted by quizmaster “Rx,” this round served up 27 questions across 3 sets, spanning everything from the filing deadline under Japan’s Family Registration Law, to the definition of a ghost, to the company that first invented the tea drink Juroku-cha (“Sixteen Tea”). Along the way, participants got worked up debating how to read pro baseball pitcher Yamashita Shunpeita’s name — “Shunpei? Shunpeita?” — making this a beloved Friday-night tradition for trivia buffs.

It’s the weekend — let’s all do a quiz!

Background and talking points on this topic

The quiz thread is a regular fixture on 5ch’s News VIP board. The quizmaster draws from a stockpile of questions tied to past occasions like “Kokuu Special” and “Kannazuki Special,” firing them off buzzer-style as 27 questions across 3 sets, with the top 3 finishers scoring points under a “Three Chances” system. The subject matter ranges widely — law, history, biology, music, corporate history, and more — and neither the questions nor the answers touch on current events, reading instead as general trivia. This particular round leaned heavily into trivia territory, with questions on how to read the name of an active pro baseball pitcher, the title of a Mussorgsky suite, and the company that originally created Juroku-cha (Sixteen Tea). Toward the end there was also a question about how to read the sitting prime minister’s name, but since the replies to it included political commentary, this article omits that exchange.

※ This article is compiled from excerpts and summaries of the 5ch (News VIP) thread “[Last Week of October] Friday Night Quiz Thread [Late-Autumn Three-Set Showdown].”
