The story

On the 18th’s broadcast of Downtown’s Gaki no Tsukai ya Arahende!, a commercial for Downtown’s new streaming service “DOWNTOWN+” aired, showing Hitoshi Matsumoto looking pensive. With Matsumoto himself still unable to appear in the studio, the fact that only footage of him aired on broadcast TV sparked questions on 5ch about the promotional approach — comments like “He’s not even in top form, so why push this so hard?” and “Not mentioning that it’s also on Netflix seems like a bad look” — along with speculation about what call the Gaki no Tsukai sponsors made. At the same time, some voices expressed hope for his return, leaving reactions split.

“DOWNTOWN+” Ad Airs in Gaki no Tsukai’s Slot — Footage Shows Hitoshi Matsumoto Deep in Thought

During the October 18 broadcast of the Nippon TV variety show Downtown no Gaki no Tsukai ya Arahende! (Sundays, 11:25 PM), a commercial aired for “DOWNTOWN+,” a paid streaming platform delivering Downtown’s content on its own dedicated service.

In the ad, Hitoshi Matsumoto is shown saying things like, “Well… how should I put it. Let me think this through a bit more properly,” while captions reading “Matsumoto is never satisfied,” “Matsumoto keeps pushing,” “Matsumoto agonizes,” and “Matsumoto thinks” appear on screen.

This is basically a 'octopus-leg dividend' move (tako-ashi haitō — slang for paying out from capital instead of real profit, like an octopus eating its own legs to survive)
74AnonymousOct 19, 2026 08:35
Re: #3
lol, this guy doesn't even know what an 'octopus-leg dividend' is
5AnonymousOct 19, 2026 07:35
Why can't he even appear on TV?
7AnonymousOct 19, 2026 07:37
Re: #5
The spo-onsors (said with a comic stammer)
8AnonymousOct 19, 2026 07:39
He's supposedly riding high, so why pour this much ad money into promoting it?
Especially when the guy himself can't even show up because he's on leave.
9AnonymousOct 19, 2026 07:43
Wait, isn't this stuff going to be watchable on Netflix anyway?
Seems like a problem if the ad doesn't even mention that.
11AnonymousOct 19, 2026 07:43
Heeere comes… the Emperor with No Clothes! (drawn-out mock-announcer chant riffing on the fairy tale)
17AnonymousOct 19, 2026 07:46
Oh, so is this actually a Netflix ad rather than something Down+ itself put out?
19AnonymousOct 19, 2026 07:46
Even with a puff-piece article hyping it up, it's only pulling 67 Yahoo comments — says it all.
20AnonymousOct 19, 2026 07:48
Guess he CAN appear on TV after all — just in commercial form.
21AnonymousOct 19, 2026 07:50
He hasn't given any kind of public explanation — what's he even thinking?
22AnonymousOct 19, 2026 07:51
Matsumoto-style shows are trashy but decently fun,
but honestly, Matsumoto himself isn't needed anymore. He just sits there looking important, and whenever he says something everyone's forced to laugh along.
You can get that same Matsumoto-ish vibe from guys like Chidori these days — there's no seat left for Matsumoto on broadcast TV or online.
23AnonymousOct 19, 2026 07:51
Gaki no Tsukai seems like the show where he could actually make a comeback.
49AnonymousOct 19, 2026 08:02
Re: #23
He was supposed to make his comeback on the Downtown DX best-of special, but the network pulled it right before airing, he got furious, and the show ended.
84AnonymousOct 19, 2026 08:47
Re: #49
DX is a Yomiuri TV show, not Nippon TV.
27AnonymousOct 19, 2026 07:53
Advertising to people who already watch Gaki no Tsukai isn't going to win any new subscribers.
Though Takasu Clinic only ever ran ads in that exact slot too.
29AnonymousOct 19, 2026 07:54
The fact that people are even debating whether it's okay to show him… it's like he's some cursed relic.
32AnonymousOct 19, 2026 07:54
Watching old episodes of Gaki no Tsukai, it's genuinely hilarious.
Macchan's a genius.
34AnonymousOct 19, 2026 07:55
They should've just called it 'Matsumoto+' instead.
35AnonymousOct 19, 2026 07:56
They should just ask Gaki no Tsukai's sponsors whether it's okay to feature Matsumoto. At this rate the show's getting cancelled anyway.
39AnonymousOct 19, 2026 07:59
Nippon TV's side businesses are weak, so they're desperate for short-term ratings.
Gaki no Tsukai has basically become their lifeline.
41AnonymousOct 19, 2026 07:59
Just go appear together with Hamada already.
48AnonymousOct 19, 2026 08:01
Re: #41
Isn't it more that Hamada's not into it?
42AnonymousOct 19, 2026 07:59
Just cancel both Gaki no Tsukai and Downtown+ already.
They're basically running on stubbornness alone at this point.
43AnonymousOct 19, 2026 08:00
Been waiting for this.
Macchan's big comeback.
47AnonymousOct 19, 2026 08:01
Showing up at this particular timing suggests that if not for the 'illness,' they'd have planned to put him back on TV even sooner.
51AnonymousOct 19, 2026 08:02
Did this air in the Kansai region too?
Or did I just not notice?
52AnonymousOct 19, 2026 08:03
Honestly haven't watched Gaki no Tsukai at all these past few years.
53AnonymousOct 19, 2026 08:03
His image has been showing up in the opening for a while now, so I figured they'd pull something like this eventually. Sure enough.
Last-ditch thrashing on its deathbed.
59AnonymousOct 19, 2026 08:08
So he's finally able to appear again — good, good.
61AnonymousOct 19, 2026 08:10
Everyone's been waiting for Hitoshi Matsumoto.
Don't need any of those other trash comedians.
62AnonymousOct 19, 2026 08:11
Wonder how the companies paying for ad slots in that time block feel about this.
63AnonymousOct 19, 2026 08:11
Looks like the tide is turning toward a broadcast TV comeback.
The anti crowd's pressure is too weak, so they're not taking it seriously.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Hitoshi Matsumoto has avoided appearing on broadcast TV since a weekly magazine reported allegations against him at the end of 2023, and this commercial doesn’t feature him live either — it’s built from old footage, framed around the image of “Matsumoto deep in thought.” “DOWNTOWN+” is a paid subscription service streaming Downtown’s back catalog, and using a broadcast TV ad slot to promote it is itself an unusual move. The thread split into two camps: skepticism about why they’re promoting this so heavily while the man himself stays absent (why spend ad money on this now, and why not clarify its relationship to the Netflix release), versus comments welcoming the ad as a possible sign of an impending return to broadcast TV. Neither the article nor the thread confirms what judgment the show’s sponsors actually made about featuring Matsumoto — that remains unverified as fact.
