Sony Jumps Into the Pocket-Sized PC Game — 5ch Users Get Nostalgic for Old VAIOs and Librettos

The story

After news broke of an ultra-compact, high-performance PC small enough to fit in a back pocket, a thread on 5ch’s “Morning Coffee” board (Hello! Project board) filled up with nostalgic comments about UMPCs (ultra-mobile PCs) — the VAIO U and P series, Toshiba’s Libretto, IBM’s PC110, and other tiny machines that domestic manufacturers once raced to produce before smartphones took over. At the same time, some pointed out that “VAIO was sold off by Sony” and questioned whether there’s even demand for a PC this size nowadays, making the thread a mix of nostalgia and down-to-earth skepticism about demand.

What's the reasoning behind calling this a PC instead of a smartphone?

Want it
12AnonymousOct 18, 2026 16:47
I wanted the VAIO U and P back in the day.
UMPCs faded into the background once smartphones showed up,
but now small form factors are making a comeback as gaming PCs.
14AnonymousOct 18, 2026 16:47
Forget this, bring back TV recorders instead.
Don't even need an HDD or optical drive — palm-sized would be fine.
15AnonymousOct 18, 2026 16:47
Old VAIOs really had great design.
Makes you want one even if you'd never use it.
17AnonymousOct 18, 2026 16:49
Even Windows tablets never caught on.
UMPCs are probably only going to survive as handheld gaming PCs.
18AnonymousOct 18, 2026 16:49
Guess nobody's even got the energy left for this kind of Japan-only niche gadget anymore… (a nod to "Galapagos syndrome," slang for Japan-only tech that never catches on abroad)

Re: #1
VAIO was a failure.
Sony already sold it off.
22AnonymousOct 18, 2026 16:50
Back then I figured the iPhone would never take off
and wanted one of these instead of a smartphone — stop digging up my embarrassing past! ("black history"/黒歴史 = Japanese slang for a cringe-inducing past)

Here we go again, another video of it bursting into flames in your back pocket when you sit down.
26AnonymousOct 18, 2026 16:53
Me, cramming it into tight jeans — my body is built for battle.
27AnonymousOct 18, 2026 16:53
I want a Windows tablet.
Touchscreen laptops are out there,
but I don't need a keyboard.
28AnonymousOct 18, 2026 16:54
Gadgets got boring once smartphones showed up.
29AnonymousOct 18, 2026 16:55
Toshiba used to make something called the Libretto —
bet not even this board's old-school regulars (the "Wolf" crowd) would recognize it.
IBM's was the Chandra, by the way (the PC110's internal codename).
33AnonymousOct 18, 2026 16:58
Re: #29
I wanted a Libretto.

Re: #29
IBM actually released the PC110 (nicknamed the "Ultraman PC") before the Libretto.
30AnonymousOct 18, 2026 16:56
Sounds like something Germans would make special cargo pants for.
32AnonymousOct 18, 2026 16:58
I had one — it was sluggish and kept draining the battery even after shutdown. Total dud, lol.
35AnonymousOct 18, 2026 17:01
No idea who's actually buying UMPCs, but they keep getting released like clockwork.
42AnonymousOct 18, 2026 17:09
Re: #35
There's probably a steady niche it appeals to.
Personally an iPhone's enough for me since I just need a browser and a few mobile apps.
Anything more and I'd reach for a laptop.
36AnonymousOct 18, 2026 17:02
UMPCs are like microcars.
A laptop's more like a kei car (Japan's compact "light" vehicles) — might as well just buy that instead.
38AnonymousOct 18, 2026 17:06
UMPCs are actually having a moment now that integrated GPU performance has improved.
They work great as handheld gaming PCs.
39AnonymousOct 18, 2026 17:07
Bet there are collectors out there who've been hoarding UMPCs for years.
40AnonymousOct 18, 2026 17:08
Brings back memories — I was still in my 40s back then.
43AnonymousOct 18, 2026 17:11
Comparing the P and the C1

45AnonymousOct 18, 2026 17:15
I seriously priced one out and even went to check out the real thing at a VAIO shop in the next town over, but never ended up buying one.
47AnonymousOct 18, 2026 17:19
The C1 could make calls and even watch TV.
48AnonymousOct 18, 2026 17:21
They ran pretty hot, which got annoying.
I haven't used Intel in about 10 years — how are they these days?
49AnonymousOct 18, 2026 17:23
For mobile chips, Intel still performs better.
51AnonymousOct 18, 2026 17:28
There used to be a company that just kept cranking out absurdly tiny PCs.
53AnonymousOct 18, 2026 17:30
Honestly you need a decently sized display or your eyes and body take a beating — something this small is rough.
55AnonymousOct 18, 2026 17:36
Re: #53
It's an old PC, so the text's probably bigger than on today's phones anyway.
54AnonymousOct 18, 2026 17:34
I want a screenless PC running Android.
56AnonymousOct 18, 2026 17:37
I used the HP 95LX and 200LX.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

UMPCs (Ultra Mobile PCs) were a category domestic Japanese manufacturers competed fiercely in during the early 2000s, before smartphones took over — well-known examples include the VAIO U/P series, Toshiba’s Libretto, and IBM’s PC110 (nicknamed the “Ultraman PC”). One claim raised in the thread, that “VAIO failed and Sony sold off the business,” is in fact true: the VAIO business was transferred to Japan Industrial Partners in 2014, and the current “VAIO Corporation” is a separate company from Sony itself. Without knowing this background, it’s easy to conflate nostalgia for old VAIOs with discussion of Sony’s current products. Where opinions in the thread diverged was over future demand — one camp argued “a smartphone is enough,” while another countered that “improvements in integrated GPU performance are bringing these back as handheld gaming PCs.”
