Giants Could See Mass Exodus of Foreign Players — 5ch: ‘What Was the Point of Whitley?’

From our other sites

The story

The Yomiuri Giants’ acting manager Hideki Hashigami held a final team meeting after the season ended, effectively closing out the interim leadership that had been in place since former manager Shinnosuke Abe resigned in May. Former Giants stars Yoshinobu Takahashi and Hideki Matsui are being floated as potential successors, while reports say Abe has been asked to return to the front office in a player-personnel role. Hayato Sakamoto and Masahiro Tanaka have both confirmed they’ll keep playing next season — their 21st year as pros — and on the free-agent market, Hiroshima’s Tokoda and former Orix pitcher Espinoza are seen as reinforcement targets. Meanwhile, reports suggest the Giants could see a mass turnover of their foreign players, and the thread lit up with reactions over who might stay and who might go.

Lord Hashigami did a fine job, but honestly, manage things just a little better and we would've won it all (I'm sure of it)

Even Bal-chan's status is still up in the air, huh (affectionate nickname for reliever Baldonado)
21AnonymousOct 12, 2026 08:47
Tima, the 22-year-old outfielder now in his sixth year in Japan, will also stay on. Left-handed reliever Baldonado and fourth-year reliever Luciano, who came up through the developmental system, are expected to depart. The futures of second-year outfielder Cabbage and of Howard — who flew home on September 23 to focus on treating his lower back — are seen as uncertain.

Watching Tima in the farm team's Japan Series, I figured he'd already been told he's cut and was just sulking about it.
Actually, even if they were planning to keep him, after seeing that performance they should change their minds and cut him.
A guy who embarrasses himself like that in a game that matters, even for the minors, is never going to make it big.

'Unagi' should go get some seasoning outside the team for a while (literally 'eel' — likely a player's nickname)

Is this front-office assignment because people rate his eye for talent — like how he was high on Rei Takahashi, Kai, and Richard?

Feels like someone's gonna get shipped to Hiroshima as compensation in this deal.
Are we starting a whole Hiroshima collection now — Morishita, Tokoda, Sakakura, and so on?

Re: #35
Add Kozono to the collection too

Re: #35
Nobody's actually coming though lol. Guys with any real track record aren't gonna bother joining our squad — they'd rather go somewhere they can play freely.

Guess they decided he's not cut out to manage, so front office it is
57AnonymousOct 12, 2026 09:33
Re: #49
'Front office role' is just the official story — they're probably actually locking him up in some isolation room in Otemachi (Otemachi is where the Yomiuri Shimbun/Giants headquarters sits)
70AnonymousOct 12, 2026 09:39
Morishita might be a good pitcher, but he won't survive our team's total lack of run support (muengo)

Exactly that. They need to reinforce the lineup in parallel too

Here we go~
Ready, bow!

Do they really have to go this far?
Are the players on our team kindergartners or something

There's no 'and no chewing gum!' though

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Shinnosuke Abe stepped down as manager in May 2026, and coach Hideki Hashigami took over as acting manager for the rest of the season. It’s worth noting that the reported scouting of Tokoda and Espinoza, as well as the foreign players’ futures, are all still at the “exploring” or “undecided” stage — no contracts have actually been signed or terminated. Where the thread split was over how to rate the foreign players’ abilities and the front office’s roster strategy, with mixed opinions on players like Whitley and Cabbage individually, while the news that Sakamoto and Tanaka will keep playing was largely welcomed. Note that this thread is a regular season-ending roster-management thread, and also covers practical matters like tracking open uniform numbers and active-roster registration counts.
