PS6 Price Could Hit $1,200 Max Without Sony Eating the Loss

The story

Speculation that Sony’s next-gen PS6 could cost as much as $1,200 if sold without taking a loss on the hardware itself (known as “gyakuzaya,” or reverse margin) became a hot topic on 5ch’s hardware/industry board (nicknamed “Geha”). Given that the current PS5 Pro has already climbed to around ¥200,000 domestically, some posters said “that wouldn’t even be surprising at this point,” while others worried “a price like that would kill adoption.” The thread also debated the reliability of an estimate putting manufacturing costs at around $760, as well as how the price would compare to PCs and the next-gen Switch.

Even selling at a loss it's still ¥150,000?
You're kidding me.
3AnonymousOct 10, 2026 19:57
This isn't just "the brakes are broken"—is this shaping up to be worse than the Dreamcast?
4AnonymousOct 10, 2026 19:57
Consoles are done after this generation.
8AnonymousOct 10, 2026 19:59
Re: #4
No, it's just PlayStation that's finished.
16AnonymousOct 10, 2026 20:04
Re: #4
You typo'd C for P there.
You should really stop using voice input.
5AnonymousOct 10, 2026 19:58
Turns out if you sell your PS5 Pro, you can buy a PS6 with that money.
PS6 is too cheap!
6AnonymousOct 10, 2026 19:58
It's getting cracked wide open left and right, so they'd better hurry and move to the next gen.
7AnonymousOct 10, 2026 19:58
It's unavoidable if they want to keep the platform they've spent years building.
If they lose market share, the whole business model collapses.
10AnonymousOct 10, 2026 20:00
By then the dollar will be back down to ¥100, so we'll be fiiine.
12AnonymousOct 10, 2026 20:01
They've spent all this time trashing the Switch as a "poverty console," so I guess it's fine if the PS6 is an expensive one?
13AnonymousOct 10, 2026 20:02
That's too cheap.
I mean, the PS5 Pro is already ¥200,000.
They should be charging more like ¥280,000.
14AnonymousOct 10, 2026 20:03
Switch 3 will probably be around ¥80,000–100,000 too.
They'll probably still keep it at a somewhat realistic price.
The PS6 is going to get so expensive nobody will be able to afford it, and nobody will buy it.
18AnonymousOct 10, 2026 20:04
Re: #14
Forget next-gen, it'll hit that price even this generation.
Without the Japan discount it's already ¥80,000, and there's a good chance of further hikes on top of that.
15AnonymousOct 10, 2026 20:03
It's not even some crazy, unexpected price—that's the sad part, it actually feels about right.

A PlayStation insider's price prediction

Tsukikage (agano4sq5)
Reasons the PS6 might not end up pricier than the PS5 Pro:
・The PS6 prioritizes adoption, so it has a lower profit margin than the Pro
・It uses a lower-grade CPU and GPU than the Pro
Since the Pro isn't meant to be a mass-adoption model, it's easier to give it a higher margin than the base model
In other words, it's not necessarily true that the PS6 will definitely end up pricier than the PS5 Pro

The $1,000 (¥160,000) figure for the PS6 cited in Tane's article is pure speculation and bogus

The manufacturing cost is $760 (¥120,000)
Newly released models are basically never sold for more than the manufacturing cost
And it's extremely unlikely they'd jack the price up significantly on top of that

Around ¥120,000 is the reasonable line

Re: #19
For a console whose whole selling point is rich visuals and powerful processing,
there's no reason they'd release a next-gen machine that's weaker than the previous one.
20AnonymousOct 10, 2026 20:07
You can't really compare a ¥150,000 console to a PC on value.
At that point you might as well splurge a little more and just get a PC.
21AnonymousOct 10, 2026 20:08
It's unlikely to be cheaper than the PS5 Pro,
so a $1,200 floor price with no built-in loss actually seems about right.
Though if that happens, there's no way it sells 5 million units in Japan.
22AnonymousOct 10, 2026 20:09
Sounds like the PS5 has been completely cracked wide open (hacked), so they probably want to put out a next-gen system and start fresh.
23AnonymousOct 10, 2026 20:11
Even at around ¥200,000, with parts prices still climbing, they're probably still in the red.
At this point there's no room to negotiate—it's just whatever price they say it is.
24AnonymousOct 10, 2026 20:12
Actually, can they even pull off $1,200 without eating a loss?
Seems like it'll end up costing more than that.
31AnonymousOct 10, 2026 20:21
It's cheaper than a PC, right?
That's great value, right?
Have some confidence!
38AnonymousOct 10, 2026 20:25
Re: #31
PlayStation is indeed better value than a PC as a console,
but we've entered an era where "(high-performance) consoles" themselves are just bad value in general.
39AnonymousOct 10, 2026 20:26
It's not even selling at ¥55,000,
so there's no way a PlayStation over ¥150,000 is gonna sell lol
46AnonymousOct 10, 2026 20:33
Re: #39
Still, they've got no choice but to do it.

RTX 5090 — ¥1,000,000
iPhone "Beo" — ¥500,000

We can't let our PS6 be put to shame.
50AnonymousOct 10, 2026 20:36
Re: #33
Nice try, hater.
You can run custom firmware (CFW) on it, so mods are totally free-form, you know?
53AnonymousOct 10, 2026 20:38
Re: #50
Lol, you're already assuming the PS6 gets hacked too.
54AnonymousOct 10, 2026 20:38
If you think of it as being in iPhone price territory, it's not THAT expensive, but mainstream/casual buyers will probably stop buying altogether.
Meanwhile the core gamers they actually want to win over are increasingly just going PC-only, upgrading their graphics card regularly instead.
58AnonymousOct 10, 2026 20:40
Re: #54
We're in an era where a graphics card alone can run you like ¥200,000.
62AnonymousOct 10, 2026 20:43
Geha posters sure sound broke these days.
¥200,000 for something on par with a ¥500,000 PC setup is actually cheap.
67AnonymousOct 10, 2026 20:45
Re: #62
Well yeah, that's because those guys just play games all day instead of working.
It should be ¥1,000,000 just to weed them out.
68AnonymousOct 10, 2026 20:46
In Japan it'll probably be a ¥50,000 handheld and a ¥90,000 high-end model.
72AnonymousOct 10, 2026 20:55
Re: #68
Neither of those is realistic lol
74AnonymousOct 10, 2026 20:58
Re: #68
Get a job.
PS6: ¥1,000,000, handheld: ¥300,000
That's ¥1,300,000 total.
71AnonymousOct 10, 2026 20:50
Nah, at this point they've given up on mass adoption and are just selling a small run at a high price.
This is basically an Xperia situation (Sony's niche, low-volume, high-price phone line).
77AnonymousOct 10, 2026 21:00
Re: #71
Also known as the PSVR2 situation.
81AnonymousOct 10, 2026 21:02
And on top of that, the games you'd play on it are the same as on the PS5.
Too expensive so it doesn't spread, doesn't spread so they can't drop the old generation, can't drop the old generation so it doesn't spread—a vicious cycle.
89AnonymousOct 10, 2026 21:14
Re: #81
Looks like there'll be even more cross-gen releases (same game on both consoles) with the previous machine than there were with the PS5.
97AnonymousOct 10, 2026 21:30
Re: #38
Honestly, even as a console it's not that much better value than a PC.
The gap between paid and free online is huge.
It's only the upfront cost that's cheaper.
98AnonymousOct 10, 2026 21:33
Re: #97
Online play ("nettai"/"tropical," forum slang punning on "netto" for online) isn't mandatory, though.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Console pricing has long followed a practice called “gyakuzaya” (reverse margin), where hardware is sold below its manufacturing cost and the loss is recouped later through software sales and network fees. With semiconductor and circuit-board material costs climbing and the yen remaining weak, the street prices of the PS5 and PS5 Pro have trended upward since launch. The thread split into two camps: one saying “if this trend continues, $1,200 wouldn’t even be surprising,” and another warning that “a price that high would stall adoption and just prolong cross-gen sales alongside the previous console.” It’s worth noting that several unconfirmed estimates were circulating from different sources—including the $760 manufacturing-cost figure and commentary on an article by a writer referred to as “Tane”—and none of this amounts to an official announcement from Sony.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry, “Geha”) thread “PS6 Price Could Balloon to a Max of $1,200 Without Sony Subsidizing the Hardware Loss.”
