Female-Only Power Battle Manga: 5ch Thread Turns Up Real Example After Real Example

The story

A thread titled “Is there demand for female-only power battle stories?” popped up on 5ch’s Niche Speed VIP board, and in response to the OP’s question, posters kept naming real works one after another. With titles like Witch Wars, Part 6 of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, ViVid Strike!, Hayate x Blade, Welcome to Busu World (“busu” = slang for “ugly girl”), Issho Senkin, and Blue Wolfs all coming up, the conversation drifted from “is there even demand for this” to “isn’t this genre already a thing.” Along the way the thread veered into tangents about how the powers work and jokes about periods and menopause — more a show-and-tell of existing titles than an actual debate.

Guess it's better to have some guys in it after all, huh
13AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:31
Yeah there are a handful of manga like that
Witch Wars, for one
20AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:32
Re: #13
Huh, the art style's pretty serious, not moe at all
14AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:31
JoJo Part 6 kind of fits that bill too
22AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:32
Re: #14
True
Though the prison guards were guys
16AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:31
Can they even fight when they're on their period?
23AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:33
Re: #16
Yep, they can
Their powers let them suppress it
28AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:34
Re: #16
2D bishoujo don't have periods (dead serious)
19AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:32
There's also magical girl battle manga
26AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:34
Re: #19
I guess magical girls count as power battles in the broad sense
25AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:33
Give me that gritty ViVid Strike vibe
31AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:35
Re: #25
ViVid Strike!?
Haven't watched it so I can't say if it's the same vibe, but the protagonist is pretty gritty
29AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:34
Like, prefectures or whatever — in Japan you can just turn literally anything into a cute girl
35AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:37
Re: #29
Personifying and bishoujo-ifying everything is basically Cool Japan culture at this point
34AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:37
There's actually one called 'Villainess Ranking'
37AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:38
Re: #34
That's a super recent one
40AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:40
'Welcome to Busu World' is a total power battle manga too
45AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:41
Re: #40
The art style's unique, I like it
41AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:40
Re: #35
A Chinese company once turned Korean historical figures into a bishoujo game and it blew up into a huge controversy
Japan's the only place where turning anything into a cute girl gets welcomed with open arms
46AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:42
Re: #41
Even in Japan, people would probably balk if it was a Chinese company doing it
43AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:40
No idea why I assumed this didn't already exist
47AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:43
Re: #43
Oh, it doesn't exist yet?
Guess I'll be the pioneer then
49AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:45
You're forgetting this one

That's a crude name tag
72AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:53
Re: #49
Dirty Soul Eater
50AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:45
While we're at it, can I ask about typical powers?
Fire, water, wind, earth, wood, darkness, light, and 'no powers' are already taken — what other clichéd powers are there?
66AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:51
Re: #50
In the Five Elements you're missing metal
51AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:45
Something like 'menopause, no logic needed, it's my turn forever'? (riffing on the old Yu-Gi-Oh 'it's always my turn' meme)
53AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:46
Re: #51
Menopause never comes up
Even the teachers are all young
54AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:46
Zoom-in Artist (physical)
57AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:49
Re: #54
Googled it but nothing matching came up
59AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:49
Issho Senkin and Blue Wolfs are both women-only battle stories too
64AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:51
Re: #59
Lol, not a single one of these has a cute art style
69AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:53
Re: #59
That's more women's fighting manga than power battle
They've got superhuman abilities, but only within the bounds of fighting — no flying or anything like that
81AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:57
Re: #69
I see. The more grounded ones are nice too
It's an old one, but I was pretty into Tetsufuu
88AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:59
Re: #81
For a lighter-on-powers female battle series, Hayate x Blade fits that too
95AnonymousOct 8, 2026 20:01
Re: #88
The art style's cute, nice
131AnonymousOct 8, 2026 20:27
Re: #88
I like it, but Hayate's a sexual harasser and Ayana's an abusive husband
And there's another sexually-harassing woman who's the awful comic relief
127AnonymousOct 8, 2026 20:22
Re: #124
You mean they get sent to the battlefield?
129AnonymousOct 8, 2026 20:25
Re: #127
Some get sent to the battlefield, others get turned into vegetables as research subjects
Using your powers at all shaves off your lifespan to begin with, so even if you try to live out a quiet retirement you end up dying young anyway
Some join the resistance and get killed by state-employed powered agents — basically everyone dies of something different, one way or another
And the teachers end up going insane and killing themselves
132AnonymousOct 8, 2026 20:33
Re: #129
So living out your college years as a powered person is basically a hopeless stretch of time
What a rough future to look forward to
134AnonymousOct 8, 2026 20:36
Re: #132
In this socialist state, becoming a powered person gets your family a pardon, so there are real upsides
Everyone enrolls with the mindset of 'if I'm going to live crawling at the bottom of society anyway, I might as well live a short but intense life'
The teachers, though, fully understand that inner conflict and the life waiting for these kids afterward, which is why they end up breaking down
136AnonymousOct 8, 2026 20:37
Re: #132
By the way, the 'college' comparison was just to convey how rare it is relative to the real world — the actual setting in the story is high school

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Even under the umbrella term “power battle,” the titles raised in the thread actually split into two broad categories: supernatural/magic-based works like Witch Wars and ViVid Strike!, and works with superhuman elements that still stay within the bounds of straight fighting, like Issho Senkin and Blue Wolfs. One reply drew a distinction, calling the latter group “women’s fighting manga rather than power battles,” and where to draw that genre line became the real sticking point of the discussion. The thread also touched on personification/bishoujo-ification culture, citing a case where a similar project sparked backlash overseas while suggesting “Japan is uniquely receptive to this” — but that’s just one thread’s impression, not survey data on actual public reception. All the titles mentioned are real, but the finer plot details (such as powers shortening one’s lifespan) are fictional conceits, not claims backed by any real-world basis.
