Wolverine’s Used Price Crashes to ¥3,500 Just Three Days After Launch — 5ch: ‘Not the Bargain Bin, Nooo!’

The story

Famitsu’s weekly software sales Top 30 was updated on September 29, sparking discussion on 5ch’s “Hardware/Industry (Geha)” board. The biggest talking point was Marvel’s Wolverine (PS5) struggling out of the gate — just days after release, reports surfaced that its used buyback price had already dropped from ¥4,000 to ¥3,500, and the thread quickly filled with jokes about it ending up stuffed into a lucky bag or wheeled out on the clearance cart. Meanwhile, the new release AKIBA LOST failed to chart at all, while Yo-kai Watch 1 for Nintendo Switch — released roughly five and a half years ago — quietly climbed onto the Top 30 for the first time on the strength of steady slow sales, drawing extra attention to the ranking’s surprise movements.

Where’s our usual trigger-happy poster today? (5ch slang for someone who always jumps in too fast)

Re: #9
I figured it'd be somewhere between 25th and 5th, but I never expected AKIBA LOST to miss the chart entirely while Patlabor made it in — and Patlabor's a flawless piece of trash, too.
16AnonymousSep 29, 2026 11:10
Huh, Elden Ring is selling better than it did last week.
77AnonymousSep 29, 2026 11:29
Re: #16
Only 2,000 copies lololol
22AnonymousSep 29, 2026 11:11
Not buying Wolverine, not buying Trails either! So what ARE these people actually buying?
26AnonymousSep 29, 2026 11:12
Re: #22
Nothing. They're not buying anything.
28AnonymousSep 29, 2026 11:12
Wolverine's buyback price is already down to ¥3,500? What is this?
38AnonymousSep 29, 2026 11:15
Re: #28
It was ¥4,000 as of the 26th, and now it's dropped another ¥500 in just three days…

Losing ¥1,500 in two weeks is faster than even Beast. That's scary.
31AnonymousSep 29, 2026 11:13
So if packaged copies disappear, the blue fukubukuro (grab bags of cheap used games) disappear too, huh.
37AnonymousSep 29, 2026 11:15
Re: #31
No worries, just rename it a "game grab bag" and mix it in anyway.
48AnonymousSep 29, 2026 11:18
But 20,000 copies is actually a huge win for PlayStation these days!
54AnonymousSep 29, 2026 11:22
Re: #48
That's less than a Game Freak-tier reaction, and it's weak even by PS standards.
50AnonymousSep 29, 2026 11:19
Misuterī no Arukikata (lit. "A Walker's Guide to Mystery")
The previous entry didn't even chart, so this counts as a big leap forward.
And this time there's a Switch 2 version too, so sales are probably being split with that.

Re: #50
What was the No. 30 spot worth in copies during the previous game's launch week again?
61AnonymousSep 29, 2026 11:23
Just as expected, Wolverine shipped way too many copies. How many did they think they'd actually sell?
71AnonymousSep 29, 2026 11:28
Re: #61
Probably about the same as Dama 2. They probably didn't realize it was rated CERO Z (18+ only).
63AnonymousSep 29, 2026 11:24
I mean, if I've got money to spend on Wolverine, I'd rather spend it on a bag…
68AnonymousSep 29, 2026 11:26
Re: #63
Stop! Not that word choice… (a pun: 漢字 "kanji" sounds just like 感じ "vibe")
73AnonymousSep 29, 2026 11:28
Re: #63
Before that, don't you need shoes to go buy the bag first…

Wait, you don't even have shoes to go buy shoes?
65AnonymousSep 29, 2026 11:24
I'm amazed Patlabor even charted with numbers like these…

Yo-kai Watch 1 for Nintendo Switch
*9,426 → 12,308 (2019/10/10)

Yo-kai Watch 1 for Nintendo Switch [Level-5 The Best]
**,*** → 57,438 (2021/04/22)

First time on the chart, in its 283rd week —
it quietly stacked up 57,000 copies over roughly five and a half years.

Re: #65
Slow-burn sales are scary. It's always sitting on the shelf at Geo, so I always wondered about it — turns out it really was selling.
67AnonymousSep 29, 2026 11:25
So AKIBA LOST totally flopped, huh.
I was using AKIBA LOST as a barometer for how well a spiritual successor to Ishii Jiro's 428 would sell.

Square Enix's Haru Yukite Retorochika, released around the same time as AKIBA LOST, cast more mainstream-friendly actors than Ishii's game, so I figured it'd sell better than any 428 spiritual successor would.

Guess that means even a spiritual successor to 428 would flop if it ever came out.

Re: #67
I'm planning to buy it, but yeah, it's probably not going to sell.
92AnonymousSep 29, 2026 11:32
Re: #67
It looks like a live-action dating sim, and not in a good way.
79AnonymousSep 29, 2026 11:29
Feels like there'll be a lot of sore losers 🐷 this time going "PS is 90% digital, that's why it looks weak!" while conveniently forgetting Nintendo has digital sales too.
90AnonymousSep 29, 2026 11:32
Re: #79
Whoa, hold on —
saying there are a ton of idiots out there buying the barely-selling digital version of Wolverine at full price, a game everyone already knew was trash before it even launched?
Come on, quit trash-talking PS5 owners like that lololol
80AnonymousSep 29, 2026 11:29
The movie itself isn't even that popular in Japan to begin with.
84AnonymousSep 29, 2026 11:30
Re: #80
It's supposedly popular overseas, so why hasn't there been an official sales figures announcement yet, I wonder.
91AnonymousSep 29, 2026 11:32
Is it true Wolverine's physical copies only hit 20,000? That's weird — there are tons of them listed on Mercari (Japan's used marketplace app).
100AnonymousSep 29, 2026 11:34
Re: #91
Speedrunning it straight to the used bin is all the rage in the PlayStation scene these days.
95AnonymousSep 29, 2026 11:33
Wolverine: "Not the bargain biiiiin!"
98AnonymousSep 29, 2026 11:33
Re: #95
Then let's cram it into every grab bag we can find!
102AnonymousSep 29, 2026 11:35
Edion just went down!!!

107AnonymousSep 29, 2026 11:35
Re: #102
Only 3 copies of Wolverine? Here it comes, Yuma! (a Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL catchphrase)
104AnonymousSep 29, 2026 11:35
Guess retailers were really banking on Wolverine.
It launched on a Tuesday and Green Tea's numbers are still insane…
113AnonymousSep 29, 2026 11:37
Re: #104
Come to think of it, this is wild too — Green Tea is sitting at No. 5 even though it got a two-day handicap compared to the other titles.
105AnonymousSep 29, 2026 11:35
Grab-bag candidates:
Wolverine (the odds-on favorite)
Pro Spirits (the sports-game slot)
Lincarnation (technically the "jackpot" pick)

Re: #105
Saros and Toukon: "Pro Spirits, Beast — this load's too heavy for you two."

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Famitsu’s weekly ranking is compiled mainly from physical package distribution data, which means it tends to underrepresent actual sales on platforms with a high share of digital purchases. Commenters on the thread pushed back on this very point (posts #79 and #90), arguing that “PS just looks like it’s struggling because 90% of its sales are digital” — hinting at the deeper issue that judging a new release’s success or failure by package ranking alone may be premature. Likewise, a crashing used buyback price tends to get treated as an unofficial industry barometer, but in practice it’s heavily shaped by store inventory imbalances and distribution volume, and doesn’t necessarily track with how popular a game actually is. At the same time, cases like Yo-kai Watch 1 — still selling steadily more than five years after release and only now cracking the chart for the first time — highlight the existence of long-sellers that a short-term snapshot like the weekly Top 30 simply can’t capture.
