Though there's no actual source for that — sounds like it's just something the "PS pervs" (a slur console-war posters use for diehard Sony fans) are claiming.

Both Microsoft and the "PS pervs" are loser trash — floor-licking suits them both.

It's unit sales, obviously.
The original Xbox did beat the GameCube.
That piece of junk goes for like 100,000 yen now, though.

Sorry, but I genuinely don't get what that comeback is supposed to mean.
I think the Series X is better hardware than the PS5, and unlike in Japan, physical software actually gets proper retail distribution over there, so picking Xbox shouldn't leave you wanting for anything.
Guess the image from the Xbox One's huge flop just isn't something you shake off that easily.
Whether it's "good hardware" is pretty subjective, but more to the point — does being good hardware even guarantee it sells?
Just look at console history.
Compared to the PS5 it's really not that great a piece of hardware, lol.
It's worse in all kinds of ways.
There's no point comparing just the Series X on its own.
Releasing something like the Series S purely to have a cheap-looking price point was the worst move they could've made.
Once you launch two models side by side, you're inevitably going to get dragged down by the cheaper one —
that was obvious to everyone before they even did it. Way too late to be pointing that out now.
Guess a lot of the console-war board crowd these days weren't around for that era.
That was the golden age of this board.
I don't actually know if it truly won, but there were signs pointing that way, and that's probably exactly why Sony got so worked up about it.

so "good but doesn't sell" just doesn't happen.
It's not selling because the general public simply doesn't think it's good.

You say it's the social media age, but on social media, anything you're not already interested in is basically invisible to you.
