An 80-year-old with ¥10 million to spare — guy's loaded.

Wire-transfer scams are so common now that banks like S Bank have ramped up monitoring — apparently they get super pushy even when it's your own money you're withdrawing.

Don't go fuga-fuga mumbling like that~
You're always puru-puru trembling~
Just take out those dentures already~ (a parody of the lyrics to Lum's Love Song, the Urusei Yatsura ending theme)

Re: #8
Money above all else, I love you x3 (mwah~), I love you x3 (mwah~)
The scammers (the 'suspects') squirm across the net (another line from the same Lum's Love Song parody)

Could be Hitomi Yaida.
19AnonymousSep 21, 2026 01:34
Re: #11 "Darling, not enough" (a pun on Yaida's song title 'Darling')

Re: #1
I easily played that back in my head in Fumi Hirano's voice (the voice actress for Lum)
17AnonymousSep 21, 2026 01:33
Guess he's from the Lum generation?

Re: #17
It started serialization 48 years ago, in 1978
so this old guy would've been in his 30s back then
yeah, he'd know it alright.
21AnonymousSep 21, 2026 01:34
If he were in his 40s or 50s, fine, but at 80 it can't be helped.
When you get old, your brain seriously degrades to the point you're basically a different person.

Re: #21
Exactly.
None of us know if we'll end up going our whole lives without a girlfriend either, so we could get suckered by this kind of scam too.
The scariest people are the ones who call the victims idiots.

Most stories like this look either staged or like tax evasion. Whatever he 'handed over' or 'sent' probably just went to his kids or acquaintances.
Even if he dies with ¥101 million, just ¥1 million is enough to cover a funeral and wrap things up — no problem at all. And whoever pocketed the rest will just spend it, so it even stimulates the economy.

Taking money from someone who clearly has plenty is easy and efficient, I guess.

Go listen to the Misfits' "Die, Die My Darling" (a punk song with a fitting title)

Re: #1

37AnonymousSep 21, 2026 01:40
Apparently in the West, it's the men who call women 'darling.'
38AnonymousSep 21, 2026 01:41
Well, old man, that was a good lesson.
Life's a lesson no matter how old you get lol
41AnonymousSep 21, 2026 01:42
"Darling" lololololol the scammer's probably some middle-aged dude lololol my sides hurt lolololol
43AnonymousSep 21, 2026 01:42
"Ohh Mr. President, you're such a naughty one~" wwwwww (a classic hostess-bar catchphrase)

Well, at least he had a nice dream before the end.

He might not even remember the dream.

If my wife died before me, I bet I'd fall for this too.

Re: #42
"Datcha" is actually Sendai dialect.
A cute girl from Sendai once said "…datcha" to me and I thought I'd met a real-life Lum.

Re: #53
"…shite kero" is Sendai dialect too.
Sounds like a frog (kero = croak), kinda cute lol

I demand the full chat log be released.

Re: #72
I could pay up to ¥1,000 for that.
86AnonymousSep 21, 2026 02:13
So the scam pocketed it all and now he's broke? (slang: 'pokke nai-nai' = making money vanish into your pocket)
93AnonymousSep 21, 2026 02:19
Re: #86
(;゚Д゚) He's obviously well-off —
you can't hand over money you don't have.
118AnonymousSep 21, 2026 02:49
Anyone who hands money to organized crime is an offender too.
Don't go acting like a victim.

Re: #118
Well, if he was being blackmailed, I could still feel some sympathy.

Ah, it's Respect for the Aged Day, isn't it (lol) (a Japanese holiday honoring the elderly, observed around this time of year)

Background and Key Points of Debate

SNS romance scams typically work by building trust through repeated messaging with a stranger, then using talk of investments or personal circumstances as a pretext to solicit money — the elderly are said to be especially frequent targets. Opinions in the thread split between those who saw the large sum sent as proof the victim “must be wealthy,” and those who framed it as a case of someone whose “cognitive decline was exploited,” though the latter is speculation not confirmed by the reporting. Some posters also took the harsh position that “anyone who hands money to organized crime is an offender too,” but the report doesn’t reveal the actual nature of the scam group or the source of the victim’s funds. One point readers may find confusing is the mix between the headline’s framing as a “romance scam” and the “investment scam” elements some posters pointed out — the original article alone isn’t enough to determine the full details of how the scam operated.
