The story
Starting September 15, 2026, FamilyMart is launching the “Morning FamiMart Combo Discount,” letting customers freely pair items like a rice ball with tea, or bread with coffee, for a flat 250 yen. There are 117 possible combinations in total, and no end date has been set — the company says it will be “announced separately.” On 5ch, opinions were divided, with users comparing prices to other retail formats (“Sundi is cheaper”), debating whether this is really a deal or “just a return to prices from a few years ago” amid ongoing price hikes, and contrasting it with 7-Eleven’s approach to discounting.

What people said
Even at a supermarket it'd run about 200 yen
Re: #46
Hardly any supermarkets are open that early in the morning anyway, but there's a FamiMart everywhere
The rice balls sold at Sundi are made by Shinobu Foods,
and Shinobu Foods also makes FamilyMart's rice balls
Can't survive a night shift on that
It should be 250 yen for "rice ball + rice ball" or "bread + bread" or "rice ball + bread" too
7-Eleven has a campaign where buying a drink gets you effectively half off
So this is really just a shady way to charge almost 200 yen for food alone
At 7-Eleven, food alone normally runs close to 200 yen too
7-Eleven never leads the way with discount services like this, huh
Lawson and FamilyMart have been rolling out "extra portion" campaigns more often lately, and that kind of attitude makes me want to support them by shopping there
There are hardly any businesses left that take a short-term loss for long-term gain, but 7-Eleven is just petty and stingy about everything, and I can't stand that
their Chardonnay tea (a chardonnay-scented black tea drink) is so good I end up going anyway
So QUOCard Pay doesn't work either?
It says "(end date to be announced separately),"
so it'll end eventually
FamilyMart's franchise payout rate is good,
unlike some other exploitative franchise chains
That's why I buy bread instead — convenience store bread beats supermarket bread anyway
Seems kind of small
Just add a Fami-chiki (FamilyMart's fried chicken) or something
That combo sounds like it'd give you bad breath
I bought it every day
Hope they bring it back lol
Way better than supermarket fried chicken
isn't this just back to what it cost a few years ago?
Prices have gone up across the board, so what's the point comparing it to a few years ago?
Rice prices have come down, after all
They don't want to cut the sticker price, but sales are so bad they're going for a "feels like a deal" angle instead
Honestly, at the FamilyMart near me, rice balls really aren't selling
Even at 2pm the shelves are still packed
They used to be nearly empty by then
At the very least rice balls aren't moving, and it looks like people are drifting away from convenience stores in general
Hold it to 2 sets and it's 500 yen a day
Just 1 set and it's 250 yen a day!
At Sundi it'd be even cheaper

They've got rice balls for 59 yen and 69 yen (before tax)
that kenmō mindset (resentment toward anyone else profiting off you) kicks in, and in the end you just don't buy anything
For me, shopping at a convenience store at all already feels like a luxury, so I can barely bring myself to do it
So true
Wish they'd just make it a set of same-priced items
I haven't eaten breakfast in almost 50 years
Just pass on peacefully already, would you
What, are you living on mist alone? lol (an old idiom for surviving without eating, like a hermit)
Background and Key Points of This Discussion
The backdrop here is a pricing strategy convenience store chains have increasingly leaned on: raising the price of individual items while offering bundle discounts. The standalone price of rice balls and bread has climbed in recent years, and the thread split on how to read the new 250-yen price point — a genuinely good new deal, or just a way of using bundle discounts to paper over underlying price hikes. The thread also noted that while 7-Eleven is seen as reluctant to offer similar discounts, FamilyMart and Lawson have leaned more into short-term-loss-for-long-term-gain tactics like volume-boost campaigns, with some users citing this as a reason for choosing where to shop. It’s worth noting, though, that this reflects the impressions of thread participants rather than any data comparing the chains’ official discount policies or profit margins — neither the original article nor the thread provides that.
