Ranking of Each Prefecture’s Top Company Sparks Discussion — 5ch: “What the Heck Is Ibiden?”

From our other sites

The story

A ranking of each prefecture’s “dominant company” — the biggest by revenue or market cap — became a hot topic on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G board. Reactions poured in over results that defied expectations, like Saitama and Ibaraki having nothing but regional banks at the top, Hyogo’s pick being ASICS, and Yamaguchi’s being Uniqlo (Fast Retailing). At the same time, plenty of people questioned the methodology itself, pointing out that Saitama Resona Bank doesn’t show up on its own since it’s a subsidiary of Resona Holdings, and that companies headquartered in Tokyo get counted as “Tokyo” no matter where their actual factories are located.

I figured it'd be Nintendo, but turns out there's a huge gap between it and Murata.
6AnonymousSep 12, 2026 21:52
SAITAMA LMAOOOO wwwwwwwwwww (the string of "w"s is Japanese internet-speak for laughter, like "lol")
36AnonymousSep 12, 2026 22:19
Re: #6
Saitama Resona Bank is probably actually bigger, but it doesn't show up since it's under Resona Holdings.
7AnonymousSep 12, 2026 21:52
I guess my relative works at Fujitsu — is it really that big a deal?
8AnonymousSep 12, 2026 21:52
What even is Kotobuki Spirits?
27AnonymousSep 12, 2026 22:09
Re: #8
It's a confectionery company.
12AnonymousSep 12, 2026 21:54
So Uniqlo's from Yamaguchi, huh.
20AnonymousSep 12, 2026 22:04
Re: #12
Compared to Yamaguchi, Kagoshima's pick is way too weak.
13AnonymousSep 12, 2026 21:57
Nagasaki's Japanet (the TV home-shopping company) doesn't count, remember.
14AnonymousSep 12, 2026 21:58
Ibaraki and Saitama, seriously?
They're an embarrassment to the greater Tokyo area.
17AnonymousSep 12, 2026 22:02
Regional banks are mostly going to get wiped out by consolidation anyway.
Though ones like Shizuoka Bank, Fukuoka Bank, and Chiba Bank are solid.
18AnonymousSep 12, 2026 22:04
Any prefecture that can't even crack 500 billion yen doesn't really need to exist.
19AnonymousSep 12, 2026 22:04
So Hyogo's pick is ASICS, not Kawasaki Heavy Industries or Kobe Steel?
22AnonymousSep 12, 2026 22:05
Never even heard of Ibiden before
but it's a massive company
what is that?
25AnonymousSep 12, 2026 22:07
I figured Osaka's pick would be Orix, but isn't their HQ actually not in Osaka?
28AnonymousSep 12, 2026 22:10
Tokyo being represented by Mitsubishi UFJ feels kind of underwhelming, huh.
30AnonymousSep 12, 2026 22:12
I used to look down on Shimamura, but clothing stores really rake it in.
33AnonymousSep 12, 2026 22:15
For a company named Suzuki,
it's really not making much money at all —
is it gonna be okay?
38AnonymousSep 12, 2026 22:20
Saitama's just a place where people who work in Tokyo go to sleep.
39AnonymousSep 12, 2026 22:22
Mie always struck me as an industrial powerhouse, so this is surprising.
49AnonymousSep 12, 2026 22:29
Re: #39
Even though Kioxia has a factory in Mie, its HQ is in Tokyo.
40AnonymousSep 12, 2026 22:22
All these banks everywhere really gives off "declining nation" vibes.
There's just no momentum anywhere.
42AnonymousSep 12, 2026 22:24
So Shizuoka's pick is Suzuki, not Honda or Yamaha?
47AnonymousSep 12, 2026 22:28
Re: #42
Honda's HQ is already in Tokyo now, so it probably counts as Tokyo.
44AnonymousSep 12, 2026 22:26
Re: #1
Ishikawa acts like the face of the Hokuriku region, but its pick is total garbage.
46AnonymousSep 12, 2026 22:26
Isn't it kind of cheap that only Tokyo gets to use group-wide figures to look good?
If that's allowed, count Toyota's whole group too then.
48AnonymousSep 12, 2026 22:29
Ibiden does so many different things it's hard to even tell what their main business is.
They're a company that's skillfully pivoted its core business with the times.
They pay well, but they're also great at raising thoroughly "trained" corporate drones who treat overwork as normal.
51AnonymousSep 12, 2026 22:31
I wish they'd left banks out of this.
56AnonymousSep 12, 2026 22:35
Re: #51
I recall seeing a version without banks somewhere.
I think Gunma's was either Beisia or Cainz.
Miyagi's was Iris Ohyama.
58AnonymousSep 12, 2026 22:39
Yamaha Motor: 1.7 trillion yen
Yamaha: 500 billion yen
Shizuoka Bank: 2 trillion yen
Hamamatsu Photonics: 700 billion yen

Suzuyo (privately held), revenue: 600 billion yen

These would all be starting-lineup-level players anywhere else.
63AnonymousSep 12, 2026 22:49
Re: #58
Shizuoka Financial Group is actually over 2 trillion yen.
73AnonymousSep 12, 2026 23:02
What's Keyence?
Never heard of it before.
81AnonymousSep 12, 2026 23:05
Re: #73
When things get desperate, it's tradition at my company to call up a KEYENCE sales rep, borrow a demo unit, grab the data we need, and just return it 🥺
We're always buying their microscopes and sensors anyway, so it's win-win I guess.
79AnonymousSep 12, 2026 23:04
Pretty sure Saitama's Seibu Holdings has a market cap over 1 trillion yen.
82AnonymousSep 12, 2026 23:05
Re: #79
There's this running joke that Ikebukuro is basically Saitama.
97AnonymousSep 12, 2026 23:22
How is it even possible that Mazda's market cap is lower than a regional bank's?
98AnonymousSep 12, 2026 23:23
Re: #97
If the HQ's in Tokyo, this ranking counts it as Tokyo no matter how deeply rooted the company actually is in that prefecture.
101AnonymousSep 12, 2026 23:25
Re: #97
I thought the same and looked it up — turns out it's even lower than Hirogin (Hiroshima Bank).

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Rankings like this typically pick each prefecture’s “representative company” mechanically, based on standalone revenue or market cap, which often creates a disconnect from how companies actually operate as corporate groups. As commenters in the thread pointed out, Saitama Resona Bank doesn’t rank highly on its own because it’s a subsidiary of Resona Holdings, while companies like Honda and Kioxia get counted as “Tokyo” companies because their registered headquarters are in Tokyo, even though their factories are located elsewhere. Inconsistency over whether to measure by the whole corporate group (as with Toyota) or by the standalone entity is also part of why the rankings vary so much. One point readers can easily misread is that this kind of list isn’t official economic statistics — it’s simply a tally compiled from public information using its own particular criteria. Opinion in the thread was split on how to interpret the fact that so many prefectures are represented only by regional banks: some saw it as a sign of weak local industry, while others argued it just means a strong company got overlooked by the tallying method.
