Kids’ ‘Puku Puku’ Stickers Skyrocket in Price — Did Only Resellers Cash In?

From our other sites

The story

Kids flocked to variety stores for “Puku Puku” stickers, and for a while resale sites saw prices soar to many times the retail price. According to a Daily Shincho article, the boom has since cooled off, with some stores now offloading stock at “80% off” fire-sale prices. On 5ch’s Newsflash+ board, a discussion broke out between those who felt things had settled back into a calmer, genuinely kid-driven boom now that the resellers had moved on, and more cynical voices who suspected resellers had been artificially manufacturing the demand all along.

Now going for “80% off”: the current state of the sticker boom that had kids flooding variety stores and prices spiking on resale sites — with sighs that “only the resellers made money”

Don't even bring up Bikkuriman (a legendary '80s sticker franchise) here.
42AnonymousSep 5, 2026 16:22
Bet the top-tier, most popular stickers from these boom items stay expensive forever, though.

14AnonymousSep 5, 2026 15:56
Turns out almost nobody actually wants them.

Re: #14
Feels like a lot of this is resellers hyping it up to look like a real boom.
27AnonymousSep 5, 2026 16:06
Is the boom over already?
Kids collecting stickers seems like the kind of thing they'd be into forever though.
62AnonymousSep 5, 2026 16:40
Re: #27
Right, that's the point — it settled back into being a boom just for kids, like it should be.
The resellers have moved on.
And peace has returned.
31AnonymousSep 5, 2026 16:12
The whole idea of trading these things after they've been stuck on and peeled off repeatedly kind of grosses me out.
35AnonymousSep 5, 2026 16:16
Re: #31
Same thought here.
The adhesive's gotta be weaker by then.
I figured people would cut out and swap whole backing sheets, but no — they're trading ones that have already been stuck down.
51AnonymousSep 5, 2026 16:32
Re: #31
I mean, it's a sticker — of course it gets stuck down.
33AnonymousSep 5, 2026 16:13
Re: #1
The moment a reseller buys one, both the manufacturer and the store have already made their money, though…
44AnonymousSep 5, 2026 16:26
Re: #33
Ramping up production and investing in new equipment costs an insane amount, you know.
34AnonymousSep 5, 2026 16:14
After stickers, it's Chiikawa's turn, huh.
You can reel in suckers over and over and monetize them endlessly.
That's how the economy keeps turning, I guess.
189AnonymousSep 5, 2026 20:10
Re: #34
Chiikawa was already popular way before these Puku Puku stickers took off.
38AnonymousSep 5, 2026 16:19
Even the kids probably didn't really like it — they just felt they had no choice but to collect them since everyone else had them.
47AnonymousSep 5, 2026 16:28
Re: #38
That's just how kids are.
That's how they learn the need to go along with everyone else.
Meanwhile, the kid who's always contrarian, going "lol you're all obsessed with that? not interested lol," just ends up frozen out.
95AnonymousSep 5, 2026 17:12
Re: #38
So basically, the iPhone theory, huh.
46AnonymousSep 5, 2026 16:28
I bet the reseller scum will start hawking these outside their own houses again — near schools, in parks — just like they did with masks lol
48AnonymousSep 5, 2026 16:30
Booms in the kids' world die out fast lol
Apparently squishies, which were big a few years back, are making a comeback too lol
53AnonymousSep 5, 2026 16:33
Re: #48
Had to Google it just to figure out what kind of thing it even was lol
At a glance it looks like a toy for girls.
54AnonymousSep 5, 2026 16:34
Even us news-board regulars have never heard of this.
Isn't this some manufactured "boom," like K-pop?
57AnonymousSep 5, 2026 16:37
Re: #54
Well, it's mostly guys with zero contact with kids in here.
63AnonymousSep 5, 2026 16:40
Once the resellers pass through, the market's left ice cold.
200AnonymousSep 5, 2026 21:10
Re: #63
Exactly like a swarm of locusts.
72AnonymousSep 5, 2026 16:53
Isn't there some way for stores to flush out resellers before selling to them?
Going after kids' toys — that's the lowest of the low.
87AnonymousSep 5, 2026 17:07
Re: #72
Maybe flea-market apps need a fair price cap set per item, kept separate from strict-procedure auctions like fine art.
Mercari, Yahoo Auctions, and the like are going to need regulation.
80AnonymousSep 5, 2026 17:04
You'd think fakes from China would be flooding in for stuff like this, but oddly enough I haven't heard much about that.
85AnonymousSep 5, 2026 17:06
Re: #80
In that community, knockoff talk is just par for the course.
I've seen plenty of "check out how bad this one is lol" posts making fun of them.
123AnonymousSep 5, 2026 17:38
Re: #80
Customs confiscates them.
Though I'm sure some slip through and end up for sale anyway.
84AnonymousSep 5, 2026 17:05
It was just a bunch of money-grubbing idiots swarming in — it was never a real boom in any meaningful sense.
89AnonymousSep 5, 2026 17:08
Re: #84
Go ahead, explain what a "real" boom actually means then.
93AnonymousSep 5, 2026 17:10
I mean, collecting stickers you don't even get the appeal of… (´・ω・`)
109AnonymousSep 5, 2026 17:22
Adult women buying up kids' products at inflated prices until they sell out — that's the real "social problem" here.
110AnonymousSep 5, 2026 17:23
Re: #109
Go ahead, spell out exactly what the problem is then.
121AnonymousSep 5, 2026 17:33
Re: #109
You don't get how booms work with girls at all.
It starts with high schoolers and older teens first.
Then the little kids copy them and it spreads to the younger crowd.
It's the other way around, the other way.
138AnonymousSep 5, 2026 17:58
Kura Sushi cancels its Chiikawa collab.
Resellers strike again, huh.
141AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:01
Re: #138
Wasn't that one about suspected staff skimming stock to sell on the side?
That's worse than ordinary reselling.
Honestly, every Chiikawa restaurant collab ends in some scandal — maybe they should just stop doing them.
142AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:02
Re: #138
The pro-reseller crowd keeps saying it's good because it keeps the economy moving, but stuff keeps getting cancelled — it's not making anything better at all.
They need to regulate the system that makes reselling possible in the first place.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Reselling via flea-market apps has spread beyond game consoles and trading cards to even cheap children’s toys. In this case, opinions on the thread were split over whether the crowded stores and skyrocketing prices reflected genuine demand or were manufactured by resellers gaming supply and demand. Some pointed out that manufacturers can’t easily ramp up production because of the heavy burden of equipment investment costs, which complicates the simple claim that “manufacturers profit either way, even when resellers buy up stock.” There have also been repeated incidents involving popular character merchandise — such as the suspected under-the-counter sales during Kura Sushi’s Chiikawa collaboration — and this sticker boom can be seen as another example of the same pattern.
