The story

The finals of “King of Conte 2026” aired on October 17 starting at 6 PM, and the seven judges were announced. Tokyo 03’s Iizuka, Baikingu’s Kominato, Robert’s Akiyama, Kamaitachi’s Yamauchi, and Sisonne’s Jiro all return, while this year brings two newcomers to the panel: Long Coat Daddy’s Domae and Hanako’s Akiyama — two more judges than the usual lineup. On 5ch, opinions split between those questioning the system itself (“Does the panel really need to be limited to fellow comedians?”) and those pointing to the new judges’ thin track record (“Domae’s scoring just doesn’t feel convincing”).

What people said

Modern conte, where apparently 'Yahhoi' counts as comedy gold (a signature bit by comedian Iwakura)
7AnonymousOct 17, 2026 20:05
I always wonder about this, but does the judging panel really need to be limited to fellow comedians and industry experts?
15AnonymousOct 17, 2026 20:11
Re: #7
Probably the lingering effect of Matsu-chan (Hitoshi Matsumoto) pointing that out himself years ago
20AnonymousOct 17, 2026 20:22
Re: #7
Would a celebrity outside the industry even agree to be a judge?
The risk would be insane
8AnonymousOct 17, 2026 20:07
Wait, didn't Domae literally just win this last year?
9AnonymousOct 17, 2026 20:07
Make Akiyama pick just one or the other
Must be awkward for the hosts (Hamata) to call on them too, with two Akiyamas up there
10AnonymousOct 17, 2026 20:08
Re: #1
Yoshimoto (his talent agency) pushes Domae insanely hard, and yet he just never breaks through
12AnonymousOct 17, 2026 20:09
Domae's scoring has never once felt convincing
Don't let someone with no skill, no popularity, and no real career judge off his own taste
13AnonymousOct 17, 2026 20:11
Wasn't Samā≈zu's Otake on the panel before?
19AnonymousOct 17, 2026 20:15
Re: #13
He stepped down ages ago
16AnonymousOct 17, 2026 20:12
Re: #4
That was genuinely absurd
There were even die-hard 'Matsu-shinja' (Matsumoto fanatics) sending borderline threatening messages to the official X account like 'bring Matsumoto back or this blows up'
18AnonymousOct 17, 2026 20:15
Judges:
Kinkume's Takahashi
Wagaya's Sugiyama
Yonsendoshin's Tsuzuki
Jungle Pocket's Saito
36AnonymousOct 17, 2026 20:46
Re: #18
Saito's getting sentenced to prison in November, so we won't see him for 7 years
47AnonymousOct 17, 2026 20:59
Re: #18
Sounds way more entertaining than the actual panel this time
24AnonymousOct 17, 2026 20:30
I honestly think Fire Thunder takes it this year
25AnonymousOct 17, 2026 20:31
They really shouldn't let a duo that rips off The Geese's material compete
27AnonymousOct 17, 2026 20:35
Domae and Hanako's Akiyama are basically on the same level as Hasumi
29AnonymousOct 17, 2026 20:37
Kominato and Iizuka's scores are the only ones I actually agree with
30AnonymousOct 17, 2026 20:38
Rough watch.
Feels like a lot of these sketches are hard to actually laugh at —
workplace-harassment bits, hospital bits, stuff like that.
31AnonymousOct 17, 2026 20:39
There are a few judges up there who make you think 'being judged by this guy?'
32AnonymousOct 17, 2026 20:41
Domae and Hanako becoming judges already feels way too soon, doesn't it?
33AnonymousOct 17, 2026 20:41
Honestly, comedy shouldn't even have judges to begin with
Whether something's funny or not is entirely up to the audience
35AnonymousOct 17, 2026 20:44
I can't stand any of Iwakura's acting
The 'Yahhoi' bit is funny and I want her to become a star, but her chatty persona apparently runs purely on memorized lines, so she probably can't hold her own in unscripted talk segments
38AnonymousOct 17, 2026 20:46
Don't seat Domae and Jiro next to each other, I can't tell which one is which
39AnonymousOct 17, 2026 20:47
Re: #34
And out pops the real Ai Shinozaki from inside the robot,
striking her signature 'Satellite Office' pose!
40AnonymousOct 17, 2026 20:47
I genuinely don't get what's supposed to be funny about Kaerutei at all.
41AnonymousOct 17, 2026 20:51
The judging panel just isn't convincing
I get that they're supposed to be past champions, but that doesn't mean you should put someone barely distinguishable from the contestants up there as a judge
Then again, a lot of veterans everyone would actually respect just don't want the job
For conte specifically there's someone like Uchan (Uchimura), but there's no way he'd ever agree to it
In that sense Matsumoto really was a convenient figure — his name carries weight, and he judges both conte and M-1
42AnonymousOct 17, 2026 20:52
Kaerutei's score makes no sense
The escalator sketch was funnier than that
45AnonymousOct 17, 2026 20:57
Having someone who's still very much an active competitor sit as a judge just feels off
46AnonymousOct 17, 2026 20:58
It's all small-fry names, so the attention and the prestige of winning this is probably going to drop
48AnonymousOct 17, 2026 20:59
Has Long Coat Daddy actually won this before?
51AnonymousOct 17, 2026 21:04
Was Kaerutei really that funny?
Second place seems off, doesn't it?
59AnonymousOct 17, 2026 21:15
Re: #51
We're not the ones judging, after all
Can't help it if someone unfunny ends up ranking high
67AnonymousOct 17, 2026 21:30
Re: #51
Their first sketch ended before I even understood what it was supposed to be about
56AnonymousOct 17, 2026 21:11
Compared to M-1, this really feels like a huge step down in prestige
70AnonymousOct 17, 2026 21:35
Re: #56
There are still idiots out there going on about 'prestige' in comedy
Guess comedy's some kind of sacred thing to you, huh? lol
58AnonymousOct 17, 2026 21:14
Skill-wise there's nothing to complain about, but something feels weak
No charisma

This panel needs the name 'Hitoshi Matsumoto'

Background and talking points

The finals judging panel for “King of Conte” has traditionally consisted mainly of past champions and other comedy veterans, and ever since Hitoshi Matsumoto withdrew from entertainment activities in 2024 following reports of sexual misconduct allegations, how to keep the judging lineup together has become a recurring talking point each year. This time the panel grew from the usual six judges to seven, with Long Coat Daddy’s Domae and Hanako’s Akiyama newly added — a lineup that can be read as an attempt to fill the gap left by Matsumoto’s absence. The thread split along two lines: a structural debate over whether judges really need to be limited to fellow comedians, and individual gripes about scoring, such as “Domae’s scoring lacks consistency” — the latter being the kind of complaint that tends to resurface every year whenever the lineup changes. One point worth noting, not raised in the original comments, is that King of Conte scoring is a relative evaluation made individually by each judge, and the fact that the reasoning behind scores is never disclosed is itself a structural factor that tends to breed this sense of “it just doesn’t feel convincing.”
