Ocarina of Time Remake Shatters US Amazon Pre-order Records — GTA6 Comparisons Go Viral

The story

Pre-orders for Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2 remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time have hit the display cap on US Amazon — “100,000+ bought in the past month” — and notebookcheck.net reported it as a record-setting pace that outpaces GTA6. The catch: Zelda’s pre-orders opened on September 8, while GTA6’s began in late June, giving GTA6 a head start, and Rockstar’s title has reportedly already sold 5.75 million units according to Sensor Tower estimates. On 5ch’s hardware/industry board, opinion split between those questioning whether this is really an apples-to-apples comparison and those who think the lack of competing releases simply funneled buyers toward Zelda.

Zelda's popularity is almost suspiciously huge, right?
If it were a new game, sure, but this is a remake pulling numbers like this.

Re: #5
Well, Ocarina of Time is legendary enough that the high regard makes sense.
9AnonymousOct 12, 2026 07:54
Lol, that's wild.
Still, no way GTA loses on total units in the end.
But isn't its initial launch oddly sluggish?
Not that I care about the story, but is it stuffed with political-correctness pandering (ポリコレ, a common jab at "woke" content) or something?

Re: #9
Honestly, aren't most people just waiting for the PC version?
Or more precisely, waiting for the PC version to go on sale.
I mean, what percentage of people actually bought GTA5 at full price anyway?
19AnonymousOct 12, 2026 07:59
I'm worried people are going to start blaming the PS5 for GTA6 not selling well.
20AnonymousOct 12, 2026 08:00
Re: #19
But realistically, that disc controversy does seem likely to drag sales down.
34AnonymousOct 12, 2026 08:06
Re: #19
That excuse might have flown… if someone hadn't already been bragging about console players being there in force with record-breaking pre-order numbers.
28AnonymousOct 12, 2026 08:03
Since the GTA disc version plays identically to the digital one, unless you want to play right at midnight, buying the physical copy should actually be cheaper thanks to store discounts — so you'd think it'd sell well.
40AnonymousOct 12, 2026 08:09
Re: #28
Turns out the physical copy also arrives early now — it's just a cardboard box with a download code inside.
46AnonymousOct 12, 2026 08:11
Re: #28
Overseas, pre-order discounts on physical copies aren't really a big thing.
In that sense, download codes might actually be more popular in Japan.

Re: #1
>Zelda's pre-orders opened on September 8, while Rockstar Games' pre-orders began in late June. This Leonida-set title has been on sale for a much longer stretch. According to Sensor Tower estimates, 5.75 million units have already sold, so this game could still come out on top in the end.

And… thread's done here.

Re: #66
Re: #33 already spelled it out — comparing two things with totally different pre-order windows is meaningless.
35AnonymousOct 12, 2026 08:07
Zelda is crushing it across Japan, the US, and Europe — is GTA6 gonna be okay?
There are apparently a lot of 'rest of the world' regions where people can't even make a PSN account, so they can't play the digital-code version of GTA6 🙂
39AnonymousOct 12, 2026 08:08
Re: #35
Oh right, this is the same issue that blew up when Steam made PSN linking mandatory and people couldn't play.
43AnonymousOct 12, 2026 08:10
Re: #35
Wait, seriously…
So people in 'rest of the world' regions just can't play it at all…
41AnonymousOct 12, 2026 08:09
I do think GTA will eventually sell over 100 million copies, but who knows how far it'll get without online and without a PC version.
And now that DLSS5 is out, even its graphics edge doesn't count for much anymore.
Either way, it won't really start selling for real until the PC version plus online mode drop and it becomes a regular on sale.
44AnonymousOct 12, 2026 08:11
Re: #41
If it stays console-exclusive, it's bound to fall short of the previous game — guess it's a PC-version waiting game.
47AnonymousOct 12, 2026 08:11
Re: #41
Actually, word is the development budget is so huge that even 100 million units sold wouldn't recoup it — which is probably why those wild '50 million on day one' numbers got floated around.
55AnonymousOct 12, 2026 08:15
The fact that everyone's steering clear of GTA and there's nothing decent else around this release window is a big factor too — that demand is probably spilling over into Zelda.
57AnonymousOct 12, 2026 08:16
Re: #55
Yeah, a 30fps version just isn't that appealing anyway.
63AnonymousOct 12, 2026 08:20
Nice try, hater.
GTA6 has pre-orders on track for 50 million units on day one, you know?

Re: #63
That's the same pre-order tally that's losing to Zelda, though — you sure about that?

Re: #63
I came here just to see this comment.
71AnonymousOct 12, 2026 08:23
Including digital sales, GTA would win in a landslide — quit the trash talk that's just gonna boomerang back on you later.
76AnonymousOct 12, 2026 08:24
Re: #71
You really think it'll sell 50 million copies?
81AnonymousOct 12, 2026 08:28
Re: #71
Normally I'd agree, but we're living in an age where the unexpected keeps happening, so I can't help sensing some turbulence ahead.
84AnonymousOct 12, 2026 08:29
GTA6's launch conditions are genuinely rough, honestly.
88AnonymousOct 12, 2026 08:33
Re: #84
– Launching on a console with record-breaking weak sales
– 30fps
– No PC version
– No online
– No mods
– No disc
– A pirate storefront just popped up on PS5

Like… what are they even doing here?
96AnonymousOct 12, 2026 08:36
Re: #88
All the other stuff might be workable, but no online mode is a really tough blow.
91AnonymousOct 12, 2026 08:35
Doesn't look like it'll sell much in Japan, but overseas it might actually beat the 3DS version.
98AnonymousOct 12, 2026 08:37
Re: #91
Ah right, in America handheld-game sales tend to get treated like they never happened, so this basically feels like the first remake since the N64 original.
107AnonymousOct 12, 2026 08:41
Re: #91
It'll probably beat the 3DS version both at home and abroad. The 3DS version reportedly opened with 270,000 in Japan and 810,000 overseas. That said, this is about 4 months after the 3DS release, so the 3DS numbers were pretty impressive too.
119AnonymousOct 12, 2026 08:48
By the way, that number is a hard cap, so there's no telling how much it's actually sold.

On US Amazon's "bought in past month" label, there's nothing above 100,000 units — 100K+ is currently the maximum display value.
No matter how explosively a product or pre-order is selling, the label tops out and caps at "100K+ (100,000 or more) bought."
124AnonymousOct 12, 2026 08:50
Re: #119
Haha, so it's capped out, huh.
132AnonymousOct 12, 2026 08:53

Ocarina of Time on US Amazon sells 100K within one month of pre-orders opening

So that's why it was already at 100K after 5 days, and still showing 100K a month later for the monthly total.

Background and Key Points of Debate

The claim that Zelda is “dominating GTA6” rests on the fact that Amazon’s purchase-count display caps out at “100,000+ (100K+)” — meaning there’s no way to tell from outside whether actual sales are hovering around 100,000 or have shot far past it. It’s also worth noting that pre-orders opened on different dates: September 8 for Zelda versus late June for GTA6, a gap of more than two months, which makes a straight comparison of pre-order counts an apples-to-oranges exercise. GTA6 is already estimated by Sensor Tower to have sold 5.75 million units, and some argue it could still pull ahead over the long run in cumulative sales. In the thread, some pointed to the lack of a PS5 online mode and PC version for GTA6, as well as the scarcity of major competing titles around Zelda’s launch window, as factors that likely concentrated pre-order demand on Zelda.
