Switch 2 Weekly Sales Drop to Half of the Original Switch’s — 5ch: “It’s Below Everything”

From our other sites

The story

On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, a thread noting that Switch 2’s weekly sales have fallen to roughly half of the original Switch’s peak sparked a heated, occasionally testy discussion.

The talk spiraled into comparisons of PS5’s worldwide cumulative sales and Nintendo vs. Sony earnings, with opinions clashing — “it’s hopeless unless they cut the price,” “does Nintendo even plan to do anything about this?”

The original Switch's weekly sales record:
apparently it never dropped below 40,000+ units even during its 2nd-year summer break (July-Aug).

Re: #1
Forget July-August — it's below every single week's sales.

Re: #15
Oof 🤦
17AnonymousAug 27, 2026 22:43
PS5's at 100 million worldwide, after all.

Meanwhile Switch 2 is completely dead in Europe.
Japan's starting to look shaky too.

Re: #17
The real PS5 number is 40 million.
30AnonymousAug 27, 2026 23:08
Re: #17
So what was PS5's worldwide cumulative total at that same roughly 1-year-2-month mark?
Don't tell me it's below the now-slumping Switch 2…
Launched Nov. 2020, and as of March 2021 it was at about 7.8 million worldwide… that's barely selling at all lol
27AnonymousAug 27, 2026 22:57
Nobody needs consoles anymore, just pull out of the business already.
Nintendo and Sony should both go all-in on PC and mobile.
28AnonymousAug 27, 2026 23:00
Re: #27
Not gonna happen 🤦
37AnonymousAug 27, 2026 23:14
For some reason everyone's assuming Nintendo won't do anything about this at all.

Do people really think they'll just sit there twiddling their thumbs going "ugh, it's not selling" forever lol

Re: #37
Wasn't "Raiders" supposed to be their countermeasure?
It just barely moved any hardware, that's all…
40AnonymousAug 27, 2026 23:15
Re: #38
Nice.
That's peak echo-chamber energy right there.
43AnonymousAug 27, 2026 23:18
Re: #40
Put more bluntly, nothing will work unless they revise the price.
That's the "Ambassador effect" for you (a nod to the 3DS's early price-cut compensation program).
45AnonymousAug 27, 2026 23:19
Re: #43
Price isn't really the issue though?
PS5, which is cheaper than Switch 2, isn't selling either.
46AnonymousAug 27, 2026 23:19
Re: #45
Already sold.

100 million worldwide.
49AnonymousAug 27, 2026 23:20
Sony's saying PS5 has already hit its adoption ceiling, so from here on they'll only set "rational" pricing.
50AnonymousAug 27, 2026 23:21
Re: #47
Gave up.

Per Re: #49.
51AnonymousAug 27, 2026 23:21
Re: #49
Software's not selling though, is it?
52AnonymousAug 27, 2026 23:21
Re: #50
Ah, that's a shame.
54AnonymousAug 27, 2026 23:22
Re: #52
Can't refute that, huh!!
55AnonymousAug 27, 2026 23:23
Re: #54
Why would "I gave up" need a rebuttal lol
60AnonymousAug 27, 2026 23:24
Re: #55
Huh? Wasn't your whole point "Nintendo's obviously going to break out of this slump!"?
53AnonymousAug 27, 2026 23:21
So basically, the one who's cornered right now is Nintendo!!
57AnonymousAug 27, 2026 23:23
Re: #53
Isn't it distribution that's cornered? They've been screwing up nonstop ever since the bomb threat.
59AnonymousAug 27, 2026 23:23
Re: #51
Sony's given up on selling software and switched to a slash-and-burn model — making money off online fees and PS Plus instead.
It's profitable now, but there's no future in it.
65AnonymousAug 27, 2026 23:25
Re: #59
Meanwhile Nintendo can't even pull off the slash-and-burn model, because the hardware isn't selling lol
66AnonymousAug 27, 2026 23:26
Re: #60
So the premise here is that Nintendo will never make any more software and will never touch pricing except to raise it, right?

And you replied "yep, that's right" to that — so isn't this conversation already over?
68AnonymousAug 27, 2026 23:27
Re: #63
Even counting Nintendo's low-overhead, high-margin income like movies, USJ, and Pokémon Centers, they're still losing to Sony's gaming division alone lol
69AnonymousAug 27, 2026 23:28
Re: #68
So why does that mean giving up on Japan lol
Use those profits to make Japanese users happy instead lol
76AnonymousAug 27, 2026 23:30
Re: #69
They're using that money to make stuff like Concord lolol
Or so I hear lolol
79AnonymousAug 27, 2026 23:32
Re: #76
I'd get it on some other country's board, but seeing people cheerlead Sony's earnings on a Japanese forum just looks ridiculous.
92AnonymousAug 27, 2026 23:38
Re: #90
That's correct.
This is happening because you're running away from the argument.
95AnonymousAug 27, 2026 23:40
Re: #92
Isn't that for everyone else to judge, not you?
98AnonymousAug 27, 2026 23:41
Re: #95
Re: #97

Just booted up my PC, so I'll take as many rebuttals as you've got.
99AnonymousAug 27, 2026 23:42
Re: #98
The conclusion's already been reached lol
I didn't reply because I wanted to argue.

I haven't even denied anything, to begin with.
