Witcher 3 Remaster Announced — Free Upgrade for All Platforms; 5ch Reacts: “I Don’t Get Complaining About a Free Update, LOL”

A remastered version of “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt” along with new DLC has been announced, with a free upgrade coming to PS5, Xbox, PC, and Switch 2.

In the thread, while some posters said “I don’t get why anyone would complain about a free update, lol,” discussion also broke out around the reactions of users who already had the Steam version sitting unplayed, and around the fact that Japanese law requires the domestic Switch version to charge a nominal 100 yen for the upgrade. Reports that not just the graphics but also combat and animal behavior are being overhauled drew plenty of attention too.

How long are they gonna keep milking Witcher 3?

There's apparently a Witcher 4 planned that won't be coming to the "trash console" (derisive slang for the Switch)

Don't worry, I'll be playing it on an RTX 5090 — there's no way I'd touch that underpowered PS5 (lol)

Compared to PC, all consoles are trash anyway, lol
Though the Switch 2 does have the advantage of being portable
5Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 08:13:24.05ID:wBLmAVIS0
Still milking Witcher 3, huh?
This developer moves way too slowly on new titles, don't you think?

It took 4 years to go from 2 to 3 in the first place — blame it on 3 being such a huge hit
12Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 08:18:27.62ID:v+LHJYEM0
They already put out a remaster on PS5.
How many times are they gonna re-release this thing? Are they Square Enix or something?
13Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 08:19:08.16ID:JZgKiV40d
>>12
That was the next-gen native version, not a remaster
15Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 08:20:34.23ID:AXkkmhP90
So the remaster and new DLC are coming to Switch 2 as well
The Switch 1 port was a pretty rough squeeze, so the visual gap is probably going to be brutal
18Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 08:23:15.81ID:xCX7dZls0
>>15
It really is brutal — it's already listed on the store, and the promo screenshots look worlds apart
16Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 08:21:51.37ID:/UJi8Zu60
So do I have to buy it all over again? Can't they just sort it out with a patch?
17Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 08:22:20.07ID:QwMjUESH0
>>16
Can't you read the thread title?
22Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 08:26:47.60ID:tpEa9lhu0
Isn't it just Japan where the Switch 2 upgrade costs at least 100 yen?
29Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 08:32:24.88ID:7Xi1+etl0
>>22
Apparently they're legally required to list some price up front
Back in the early PlayStation days, updates used to be paid — that's actually the reason it's free now
24Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 08:27:45.20ID:8+8iciYjd
Ugh, I bought the old version on Steam and it's just been sitting there unplayed
This kills what little motivation I had left, man… wish they'd give the old version a free upgrade too
31Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 08:33:37.00ID:tTKJv3UZ0
>>24
It's a free upgrade — think GTA5's "Enhanced" edition. On Xbox ("green," forum slang for the platform) you'll reportedly even get things like second-generation ray reconstruction, so it should turn out pretty insane
Both existing DLCs were great, so I might as well buy the new DLC too
34Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 08:36:51.57ID:o1t5+enAM
I don't get why anyone would complain about a free update, lol
36Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 08:38:59.96ID:JvoQC4u/d
>>34
It's the best-selling version on PS, so the Nintendo fanboys (derogatory forum slang: "pigs") are losing it
40Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 08:41:33.24ID:ftdwgNs10
>>36
If anything, people kept saying it'd snub the Switch 2, but it ended up multiplatform anyway — it's just the PlayStation fanboys ("Sony pigs") losing it now
44Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 08:42:53.71ID:sM0x7J9y0
>>36
Actually, the PC version is the best-selling one…
41Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 08:41:41.35ID:mau5oJl+0
Instead of messing with the graphics, fix the janky mechanics and systems already
47Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 08:45:02.87ID:2KZlznXr0
>>41
Apparently they're reworking the gameplay mechanics too
54Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 08:53:01.01ID:cic5fG020
Witcher 3

Cyberpunk (2077, using its forum nickname)
60Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 09:00:57.06ID:8q3IHYNi0
It'll sell better than the Xbox version
Well, I own an Xbox Series X myself, but I'm not buying it on Xbox
63Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 09:04:24.42ID:mP0honVB0
>>60
I just bought it normally on Series X and it runs great
Though I picked up the Switch version too, later on
65Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 09:06:00.64ID:1TYROdi+0
This kind of thing happens a lot, but I do envy the people who get to experience it for the first time because of this

I felt the same way about the Switch 2 edition of Breath of the Wild
66Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 09:06:44.04ID:ujpvzNKh0
>>65
If anything, I think having already played the original is the more valuable position to be in
75Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 09:16:01.20ID:tnixkcPI0
Maybe it's because multiplatform releases including Switch 2 have just become the norm now, but the console-war trash talk has really quieted down
Even Xbox keeps getting multiplat support despite its software sales, so it makes sense that most titles will probably keep going multiplat on Switch 2 too
77Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 09:16:59.68ID:7Xi1+etl0
>>75
As long as a platform has decent enough performance, they'll probably support it multiplat

And the Switch 2 turned out to have just enough performance to clear that bar
76Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 09:16:51.75ID:LHplOeDkd
You're really better off having played Witcher 1 and 2 as well, if only for the character relationships
Though that's basically only doable on PC
78Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 09:20:11.81ID:tnixkcPI0
>>76
You can check the story summaries for Witcher 1 and 2 on the official Witcher 3 site, under "World" → "Timeline"
Of course, actually playing the games will get you a much deeper understanding
81Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 09:22:14.42ID:Q1Jcg/X/0
I've got the physical copy of the Switch version — I wonder what happens to that
84Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 09:25:03.90ID:tnixkcPI0
>>81
Since it's not labeled a "Switch 2 Edition," I'd guess upgrading shifts you to a digital copy (meaning it won't launch on the original Switch anymore)
Basically, it'll probably end up handled like the Switch 2 version of Skyrim Anniversary Edition

Looks like they've overhauled the controls and combat too
Can't wait
87Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 09:29:34.48ID:LHplOeDkd
>>85
On top of that, it sounds like animal ecology and behavior are getting reworked too — apparently they're changing some pretty fine details
97Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 09:38:28.70ID:sfIsJ0ED0
Lol, so only the Switch version doesn't get the free upgrade?
105Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 09:41:43.61ID:tnixkcPI0
>>97
• Japan only
• And that's due to legal requirements
• Plus it's only 100 yen
Can't believe someone's actually trying to stir up drama over this…
101Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 09:40:20.54ID:rHrVmpn20
So the Switch version isn't getting a "2nd Edition," it just gets patched as-is?
I think Pokémon Scarlet/Violet worked kind of like that
104Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 09:41:37.52ID:7Xi1+etl0
>>101
The Switch 1 and Switch 2 versions are completely different builds, and rebuilding it from scratch would be a huge effort, so I'd guess they just ported over the Switch 2 version from the other platforms
