GR Yaris’s $40K+ Price Tag Called ‘Too Expensive’ — 5ch Floods Thread With Alternatives

A thread on 5ch’s “Nanademo Jikkyo” (general live-chat) board, titled “I want a GR Yaris… but does it really cost 6 million yen?”, drew a wave of comments stunned by the price.

Commenters piled on with alternative picks — a used Supra, the Swift Sport, the Audi RS3 — while also debating the equipment gap between the RC and RS grades and the engine parts shared with other models.

Wouldn't a manual trim bring the price down a bit?
2Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:00:14.52ID:gEPz7dD90
Isn't the Yaris just the old Vitz?
That's pretty pricey.

>>2
The Yaris was the overseas version sold alongside the Vitz back in the day — they just slapped the same name on it.
5Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:03:12.11ID:lGBy2n6L0
People call it a Vitz, but the GR Yaris is
basically a totally different car from the regular Yaris.
17Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:05:28.31ID:M2p31XAc0
>>5
It's like the difference between a Skyline and a Skyline GT-R.
7Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:03:20.79ID:a8xS3v5r0
The early models have a cheap automatic version!
You can get one for 3 million yen.
18Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:05:31.43ID:lGBy2n6L0
>>7
The early model and the current one are basically different cars though…
10Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:04:21.67ID:i7bgWXHr0
Isn't there a grade around 4.5 million yen?
29Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:09:32.90ID:lGBy2n6L0
>>10
Now I'm starting to think a regular RZ would be fine.
12Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:04:39.24ID:rqpeUM2u0
Just get a Swift Sport.
It's cheaper than the Yaris, faster, and way more fun to drive.
14Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:05:02.62ID:lGBy2n6L0
>>12
No way it's faster than the Yaris.
21Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:06:19.34ID:iiESCNq/0
>>12
First time I've ever heard anyone call the Swift Sport fast.
16Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:05:23.15ID:CGnaLja30
Just get a used Supra.
It's got a BMW engine.
24Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:08:10.95ID:lGBy2n6L0
>>16
Used Supras have a reputation for being insanely expensive.
31Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:10:31.25ID:Upuq9ujTM
>>24
Looked it up — a 7-year-old one runs about 7 million yen.
Crazy.
Might as well be a Lexus.
45Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:16:16.15ID:CGnaLja30
>>24
No way… it's not even that fast or that popular, and it costs that much?
19Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:06:01.08ID:oTVMwzU+0
The 3.6 million yen RC grade is fine.
It's got a 6-speed manual.
22Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:07:10.12ID:lGBy2n6L0
>>19
Doesn't it not even have air conditioning…?
28Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:09:24.81ID:oTVMwzU+0
>>22
It's manual AC, but it's there.
For an extra 130,000 yen you can upgrade to the full-auto climate control from the higher grade.
30Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:10:02.04ID:lGBy2n6L0
>>28
Seriously?
Then the RC is totally fine then.
40Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:14:15.50ID:x43ngfo1d
You could buy a used 4-liter V8 twin-turbo for that kind of money.
50Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:18:23.10ID:lGBy2n6L0
>>40
The running costs on that would be insane…
42Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:14:56.12ID:MMOoiyWj0
Sure, it's fast — stupid fast, I've never lost a race on public roads — but the looks just don't do it for me.
48Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:18:04.90ID:lGBy2n6L0
>>42
Yeah, it is kind of dorky-looking…
52Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:19:25.88ID:dca2x64Ba
RZ High Performance
RZ
RC

↑ Everything above this line is the '(real) man's GR Yaris' — 3-cylinder turbo, all-wheel drive.

↓ Everything below this line is just a
'peppy little Yaris playing tough guy (lol)' — same engine as the cute, ordinary Yaris.

RS
53Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:20:58.11ID:mTrJtcY20
>>52
The RS sold so badly they discontinued it, right?
55Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:21:38.89ID:ZnaC7u9x0
I've never actually seen a GR Yaris being driven hard.
I guess people buy it for the sense of ownership, but
unless you're really into it, it feels like a waste.
58Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:24:22.99ID:lGBy2n6L0
>>55
It's not a car you're supposed to drive hard around town.
Isn't it aimed at people who occasionally take it to the track?
57Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:24:14.43ID:dca2x64Ba
Hang tight — there's supposedly a new mid-engine version coming soon
with a 2-liter, 400-horsepower G20E engine.

Looks just like a Group B rally car.
59Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:25:01.48ID:lGBy2n6L0
>>57
Something like that's gotta be over 10 million yen.
No way an average person could afford it.
100Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 11:06:53.40ID:28xV9Xbid
>>57
With that short a wheelbase, it'd probably spin out like a wind-up toy car (Choro-Q).
60Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:27:01.39ID:oTVMwzU+0
Even with the AC option it's only 3.74 million yen, and for navigation you can just buy your own screen and hook up CarPlay — swap the wheels and it looks solid.
An RC with over 300 horsepower for about 4 million yen out the door… writing it out like this, it's actually starting to sound pretty good.
61Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:31:31.27ID:iiESCNq/0
>>60
Using a car that's basically built for the track as your daily driver is something you'll definitely regret later.
63Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:32:47.87ID:ioeBlM5y0
Does the GR Yaris come with LSD front and rear as standard?
Surely it's not running an open diff, right?
69Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:35:21.33ID:xxAHVk010
>>63
Unfortunately… it is.
72Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:38:00.02ID:Nmq3E0oT0
If you're paying 6.5 million yen for what's basically a Yaris, wouldn't you just buy an RS3?
79Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:41:30.35ID:lGBy2n6L0
>>72
Yeah, the RS3 is definitely in the running.
It's just the running costs…
74Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:39:31.07ID:Pogj8dnU0
People say it's 'just a Yaris,' but the only part it actually shares with the regular Yaris is the headlights.
It's a mashup — a Yaris front chassis welded to a Corolla rear —
basically a factory-approved modified car built by Toyota itself.
84Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:44:22.41ID:9ppxaFff0
>>74
It's not about
the parts.
The model name is 'Yaris,'
the base design is 'Yaris' —
that alone makes it just a Yaris.
75Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:39:46.71ID:VosIE/Xl0
Even if you order the RZ, you're in for a long wait, right?
Is it fully made-to-order?
76Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 10:40:45.57ID:lGBy2n6L0
>>75
About a 6-month wait, roughly.
