  • Welfare Recipient Asks 5ch: ‘Are Workers Just Slaves to the State?’ — Debate Erupts

A thread on 5ch’s News VIP board asking “I’m on welfare, but aren’t workers basically slaves of the state?” sparked a wide-ranging debate. The original poster repeatedly questioned the meaning of working, while other users pushed back with arguments like “life’s pleasures only mean something because of the hardship that comes before them,” and pointed out that welfare recipients face their own constraints, such as reporting income and dealing with caseworkers. Meanwhile, some commenters dismissed recipients as living “like aristocrats” or as “parasites.” The thread never reached a consensus, with the debate over work versus welfare continuing right to the end.

    Re: #127
If it's a job you actually like, I don't think you'd call that slavery
If you're enjoying your work, the word "slave" just doesn't fit.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Japan’s welfare system draws a line within its own rules: able-bodied recipients get job-placement guidance and risk being cut off if they don’t take it seriously, while elderly recipients and those with severe disability ratings are exempt from that guidance. This distinction came up repeatedly in the thread, complicating any simple equation of “receiving welfare” with “living an easy life.” Commenters described concrete constraints recipients face — reporting income, caseworker home visits, hospital trips for chronic conditions — even as others used terms like “parasite” or “living like an aristocrat.” It’s clear that framing work against welfare means something very different depending on where you stand. The discussion even veered into philosophical territory, with a “thirst and water” analogy capturing how people think about pain versus pleasure — showing the debate went well beyond a simple work-versus-welfare dichotomy.

  • EBiDAN Set to Make First-Ever ‘Mステ’ Appearance — 5ch: ‘EBiDAN Without M!LK Is Like Sukiyaki Without the Meat’

It’s been announced that AI, Aimyon, EBiDAN, Sakurazaka46, sumika, Naniwa Danshi, and RADWIMPS will appear on TV Asahi’s “Music Station” airing October 16. It will be EBiDAN’s first appearance on the show, where they’ll perform “Yes! Tokyo,” whose music video has surpassed 100 million views. On the 5ch Entertainment & Sports News+ board, posters repeatedly pointed out that M!LK’s members — despite the song being their signature hit — won’t be appearing, alongside discussion of Aimyon’s shifting popularity and a generational shift among the male idol acts on the bill.

EBiDAN finally set to appear on the next “Music Station” — AI, Aimyon, Sakurazaka46, sumika, Naniwa Danshi, and RADWIMPS also on the bill

AI, Aimyon, EBiDAN, Sakurazaka46, sumika, Naniwa Danshi, and RADWIMPS will appear on “Music Station,” airing on TV Asahi on October 16.

Among them, EBiDAN will be making its first appearance on the show, performing “Yes! Tokyo,” a song that also made news recently when its music video topped 100 million views.

That doesn't seem like all that glamorous a lineup

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

EBiDAN is a joint unit bringing together male members from several different groups, and its lineup shifts from song to song — so whether M!LK, the group most closely tied to “Yes! Tokyo,” would actually show up this time was something posters had been watching for even before the thread got going. The fact that the same complaint keeps resurfacing suggests it’s a familiar sore spot among fans. Some posts also looked back on how “Music Station” was long centered on the former Johnny’s talent agency, but since the lineup varies broadcast to broadcast, it would be premature to read a single episode’s cast as proof of an industry-wide shift. It’s also worth noting that the “fan count ranking” image mentioned in the thread has no clear source, so the accuracy of its numbers can’t be confirmed.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Entertainment & Sports News+) thread “[Entertainment] EBiDAN Finally Set to Appear on the Next “Music Station”! AI, Aimyon, Sakurazaka46, sumika, Naniwa Danshi, and RADWIMPS Also on the Bill.”

  • Are story-focused RPGs outdated? 5ch: “Isn’t the real problem just that the story sucks?”

A post claiming “story-focused RPGs are outdated” sparked a wide-ranging debate on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. The thread started with an assessment of Pokémon’s storytelling, then spiraled into a circular argument over sales figures for “Manosaba” (a game that let everyone stream it in full and still sold well), a debate over whether Japanese RPGs should lean on celebrity voice actors, and the observation that storytelling has stayed fresh over time by adopting new tools and settings. Posters never agreed on whether “sold well” should be judged by units alone or by factoring in development costs, and the thread never reached a conclusion.

If anything, Pokémon Scarlet/Violet put more effort into story than any other game in the series. ZA got a lot of buzz too for how it handled Lysandre, so the story is clearly taking up a bigger share of the conversation than it used to.

Story patterns themselves haven't changed all that much, but each new era brings new tools that open up new settings, and that's what makes them feel fresh.
Talking with friends face-to-face → talking on the phone → pager messages → email → LINE messages — as that kind of progress happens, you can build stories that play to each medium's quirks.
    23AnonymousOct 9, 2026 17:19
It's not really an "outdated" issue — it's that games just don't sell anymore once they get streamed all over YouTube.

Well, back at Re: #25, "sold well" wasn't meant to be anything more than "a lot of units moved." Then Re: #32 brought profitability into it as the yardstick, so the obvious point had to be made that you then need to factor in the difference in development costs.

If it had a story on the level of The Witcher or Cyberpunk, I wouldn't complain, but Japanese games have these otaku staffers who pander to the voice actors, and I hate that. I always think, don't make them talk more than they need to. Western games keep the actors locked into the role, so it never feels off.
    44AnonymousOct 9, 2026 17:47
    Re: #42
Apparently the Persona staff don't even watch anime and don't know voice actors from a hole in the ground — there's a story that they rented anime DVDs and just matched whichever voice fit the character's image.

A developer who doesn't pander like that earns real respect from me.

If the story's actually good, hyping up the voice actors shouldn't matter either way.
But the fact that the official promo bothers pushing the voice actors at all suggests they're not confident in the content itself.

    Re: #81
Can't you dig a little deeper than that?

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The biggest sticking point in the thread was what standard to use for “sold well.” One camp looked purely at unit sales, while the other factored in development costs and the break-even line relative to price (the game released at a third of full price), and the two sides never saw eye to eye — the argument went in circles without any concrete profit-and-loss figures ever surfacing. The theory that fully allowing video streaming cuts into sales for story-heavy games is a long-standing industry worry tied to the spread of let’s-play culture, and the Manosaba example was raised as a counterargument — though it’s easy for readers to miss that the comparison involves titles on wildly different sales scales. Meanwhile, the practice of deliberately spotlighting famous voice actors in Japanese RPG promotion is an established industry convention where casting announcements themselves function as marketing — and the thread’s criticism is largely frustration with that specific tactic. All of this is 5ch speculation and personal opinion; none of the actual sales figures or production costs for these titles are backed by publicly available data.

  • Demon Kogure Blasts NHK Sumo Broadcast Guests as “All Just Promo Tie-Ins” — Yet He’s Never Once Been Invited Himself

Demon Kogure, vocalist of the rock band Seikima-II, appeared as a guest on TOKYO MX’s “5-ji ni Muchu!” (“Crazy at 5”) on the 9th. While breaking down this month’s overhaul of grand sumo’s rules — the first change in 71 years — he weighed in on who gets picked for the broadcasts. “Lately it’s all just promo tie-ins, isn’t it?” he said, calling out NHK’s choice of guests and noting that about 70% of the shows on the lineup bring on drama cast members as guests. He then griped that despite being a well-known sumo enthusiast himself, he’s never once been invited onto the sumo broadcast in all these years. On 5ch, posts piled up venting about NHK’s programming choices and reminiscing about the reputations of celebrities who’ve guested on the broadcast in the past.

I want to see a bout between Demon and Noumachi.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

NHK’s grand sumo broadcasts have settled into a format where celebrity guests are invited alongside the regular commentators, and Demon Kogure himself has appeared multiple times in the past, including around Hakuho’s retirement. At the same time, there’s a growing perception in recent years that many such appearances double as promotion for a drama or film, and the thread split between those agreeing with his “it’s all just promo tie-ins” take and those who coolly viewed the complaint itself as unbecoming, saying “if he’s not getting invited, he should just say so.” It’s also been noted that one reason NHK may be keeping its distance from him is his continued public defense of former sekiwake Kotomitsuki, who was dismissed over the 2010 baseball-gambling scandal — a wrinkle the main story alone doesn’t fully convey, since this isn’t simply a matter of popularity or skill.

  • Blood Found in Lotte’s Clushi Ice Cream, Cause “Can’t Be Identified” — Mother of Toddler Left Shaken

A report has surfaced that blood was found in Lotte’s frozen treat “Clushi,” and after investigating, the company determined the foreign substance was indeed blood but could not pin down how it got there. The product had been bought by a mother to give to her 2-year-old child, and unsatisfied with Lotte’s response, she’s reportedly demanding, “I want them to properly get to the bottom of this.” Following the report, a thread on 5ch saw speculation that the cause might be a blood spot that sometimes forms in chicken eggs, alongside suggestions that a factory worker may have been injured during production — though neither theory had solid evidence behind it, and the debate spread without any resolution.

Before we even get to blood or foreign objects — I never bought Clushi to begin with, since it's just "lacto-ice," not real ice cream.
Lacto-ice has vegetable oil processed to look like cream mixed in alongside the dairy, which means it contains trans fats.
Trans fats raise your risk of arteriosclerosis, heart attack, and stroke.
They also build up on the inside of your blood vessels, causing clots and plaque.

And now hearing blood got mixed in, yeah, I'm done buying this forever lol.
What do you even have to do during manufacturing for that to end up in food lol.
Blood can also carry HIV and other viral or bacterial infections, so this is just not okay lol.

If a worker really got injured at the factory, wouldn't the whole batch normally get scrapped?
Also, reporting it up the chain would be the duty of that worker — or any other worker who witnessed it.

Or, it could've been deliberate too — done out of mischief or as a grudge against the company. Can't rule that out either.

If even you could figure out the answer, Lotte would've announced it ages ago, lol.
    180AnonymousOct 9, 2026 21:09

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

When a foreign substance in food turns out to be “blood,” the two causes that most commonly come up are blood spots in eggs (blood mixed into the yolk or white) and an injury to a worker during manufacturing, and the thread’s speculation mainly revolved around these two theories. Blood spots are something food-safety standards require removing, but they generally pose no health risk, and similar reports have occurred before with dairy and processed egg products. On the other hand, if a worker’s injury were the cause, there are cases where, due to infection risk, a product recall or a report to the public health center would be required. Lotte responding that “the cause could not be identified” isn’t unusual in itself — trace contaminants often become hard to pin down through composition analysis alone once time has passed. That said, “cause unknown” doesn’t mean a cover-up; while some posts in the thread speculated about foul play, it’s worth noting that, as of now, there’s no information suggesting an investigation or any charges have been filed.

  • Juice=Juice Heads to Korea for a K-pop-Style Choreography Camp for Their New Song — 5ch: “Nobody in the Juice Family Asked for This”

Hello! Project group Juice=Juice traveled to Korea for a dance training camp to learn choreography for their new single, and footage of the trip streaming on Hulu sparked discussion on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. The thread ranged from technical doubts — can they even pull off intense K-pop-style footwork in thick-soled heels? — to bigger-picture points about how Hello! Project’s sing-while-dancing style runs on different assumptions than K-pop’s lip-syncing culture. Opinions split between posters welcoming it as valuable training abroad and those questioning why a one-off tie-in song needed K-pop choreography in the first place.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Hello! Project has long marketed “singing live while dancing” as the group’s core strength — a point of contrast with K-pop idols, who often lip-sync through especially complex choreography. The thread split over whether to view the Korean choreography camp as valuable technical training or dismiss it as just a gimmick tied to a one-off collaboration song. Commenters debated whether the footwork is even feasible in thick-soled heels, and some pointed out that earlier K-pop groups like Girls’ Generation adjusted their choreography with singing in mind — a reminder that K-pop dance isn’t uniformly high-difficulty-and-lip-synced, a nuance that’s easy to miss. The names of former Hello! Project members who left the group, such as Sayashi Riho and Kasahara Momona, also came up, with some praising the fact that Juice=Juice members can learn these skills while staying in the group, while others remained skeptical of the shift in direction itself.

  • 5ch Skeptical of ¥5 Million Container House — Poster Dodges Questions With “That’s Personal Information”

A thread appeared on 5ch’s News VIP board claiming “the container house I built for 5 million yen turned out surprisingly livable.” The poster explained that they’d lined up multiple shipping containers on roughly 1,000 square meters of land, offsetting electricity costs with solar panels installed on an adjacent vacant lot. But commenters quickly pushed back, pointing out that Japan’s Building Standards Act should require extra costs to convert containers for residential use, and many questioned whether the building in the photos was even real. The thread also got into property tax and the procedures for converting farmland to residential land, turning into a full-blown fact-check of whether a “bargain container house” is actually feasible.

It's not registered as a building, so no property tax applies to it.

    119AnonymousOct 9, 2026 20:24
    Re: #113
You can't transfer it as farmland if the whole plan assumes converting it to residential land.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

When a container is used as a residence, Japan’s Building Standards Act treats it as a “structure,” which can require a building confirmation application and the use of containers specifically certified for residential use — commenters in the thread pointed out that this tends to make it pricier than simply repurposing a used shipping container as-is. Specific points of contention piled up one after another: the upfront cost of retrofitting solar power versus the electricity savings it offsets, and the legal procedures for converting farmland to residential land (including restrictions under the Farmland Act and how property tax is assessed). But because the poster refused to share photos or a detailed cost breakdown, verification of the claims stalled partway through. One point readers can easily get wrong is that the “5 million yen” figure took on a life of its own as a standalone number — the thread never fully sorted out whether that total included the cost of the land itself, or the solar panels and soil-improvement work, and the discussion moved forward without ever nailing down those assumptions.

  • “Greatest Games of All Time” Ranking Revealed — Zelda’s #1 Spot Sparks Debate on 5ch

The overseas gaming outlet “acclaimedvideogames.com” has published a “Greatest Games of All Time” ranking compiled from multiple critics’ lists, with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild taking #1, Tetris at #2, and Half-Life 2 at #3. When the results were shared on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board, posters questioned why Elden Ring only landed at #20 and why Pokémon Gold/Silver didn’t make the list at all (with Red/Green/Blue coming in at #60), sparking debate over whether the ranking method favors older titles, versus the view that games should be judged by their influence on later works.

    #2 Tetris (1985)

    #3 Half-Life 2 (2004)

    78AnonymousOct 9, 2026 20:02
    Re: #59
Part 2 pointlessly bloated out the areas, which made exploring a total chore, and combined with how little the scenery actually changed, the story felt dull too — playing it was mind-numbingly boring. On the plus side, adding things like prone crawling in combat made the movement flow a lot smoother, and the weapon-upgrade animations felt really satisfying. But at the end of the day it's still a linear game with a boring scenario, unlikable characters, and plot convenience cranked up sloppily strong, so there was zero immersion — gameplay-wise it was genuinely a slog.

I'd have figured it had a decent-sized fanbase.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

“Greatest games of all time” rankings like this one are usually built not from a single vote but from an “average rank” method that aggregates multiple critics’ lists and reader polls — which tends to let titles that have been praised consistently for years hold onto the top spots. The thread’s complaint that “older games have the advantage” does point to a real feature of this aggregation method. But it’s easy to overlook that games like Minecraft or Pokémon — despite selling in numbers far beyond almost everything else on the list — can still end up ranking lower if critics’ votes for them are split rather than concentrated. It’s also worth noting that in rankings compiled overseas, titles whose domestic fame in Japan doesn’t match their critical reputation abroad (such as Chrono Trigger or Silent Hill 2) tend to rank higher than Japanese fans might expect — a gap that reflects differing evaluation cultures rather than simple “bloc voting.”

Aeon-affiliated USMH (United Supermarket Holdings) has announced it will close roughly 100 stores by fiscal 2030, mainly among its Maruetsu, Kasumi, and Inageya chains. President Takemi Ide explained that “inflation has been tougher than expected, which is how we arrived at this number of closures,” revealing a reality in which rising procurement costs driven by inflation are squeezing the business. On 5ch, the reaction focused less on shock at the closures themselves and more on debates over which is more convenient, My Basket or Big-A, the price gap with local supermarkets like Taiyo, and personal takes on whether life was easier in the deflation era or the inflation era.

United Supermarket Holdings (USMH), an Aeon-affiliated operator of food supermarkets, revealed on the 9th that it will close approximately 100 stores by fiscal 2030. It runs chains including Maruetsu, Kasumi, and Inageya in the greater Tokyo area, and the closures are part of a broader structural reform.

President Takemi Ide said at a press conference, “Inflation (rising prices) has been tougher than expected, which is how we arrived at [this number of] closures.” Inflation appears to be pushing up procurement costs and squeezing profits.

Since around the day before yesterday I've been seeing posts saying average spend per customer is rising but the number of items bought is falling.
At this rate, small and mid-sized food makers are going to start dropping like flies too.

Aeon was way more appealing back when it was this in-between thing — part regular supermarket, part department store.
Now it's no different from any other supermarket, and that "gotta buy it at Aeon" feeling is gone.
Having a real identity really does matter.

The Maruetsu near me has no customers.
It's a Maruetsu and it's still expensive lol.
    It's cramped too.
New supermarkets keep moving in, so it'll probably end up on the closure list.

Background and key points of this discussion

USMH (United Supermarket Holdings) was formed in 2015 when Aeon-affiliated chains Maruetsu, Kasumi, and Inageya merged into a single food-supermarket group with deep roots in the greater Tokyo area — one that has faced constant price competition from discount formats such as My Basket, Big-A, OK, and Gyomu Super. This latest round of roughly 100 store closures is being framed as a structural reform meant to offset rising procurement costs by shrinking the store network. On the thread, interest centered less on the reasons behind the closures and more on comparing My Basket versus Big-A, the price gap with local chains like Taiyo, and whether life felt easier during the deflation years or the current inflation years, with opinions split over how to judge the weak-yen policy. It’s worth noting, though, that these are personal impressions rather than claims backed by concrete business data, such as changes in average spend per customer or number of items purchased.

  • Nobel Peace Prize Goes to Former ICC Judge Pillay, Spotlighting the ‘Rule of Law’

On October 9, 2026, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced it would award the Nobel Peace Prize to Navi Pillay (85), former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and former judge at the International Criminal Court (ICC). Coming amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and ongoing military clashes between the US and Iran, the selection was said to underscore the importance of “the rule of law.” On 5ch’s News Flash+ thread, reactions split between those who read the award as a jab at President Trump and those pointing out that the ICC has no power of arrest or investigation and little real teeth, with the political meaning of the prize dividing opinion.

[Oslo — Yuya Yokobori] The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on the 9th that it would award the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to Navi Pillay (85), former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Pillay has also served as a judge on the International Criminal Court (ICC), and with armed conflicts flaring around the world—including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and military clashes between the US and Iran—the award put the spotlight on the importance of “the rule of law.”

    That said,

    Re: #255
What upholds the law is the spirit of standing up to power
Even in America, the courts have slapped President Trump with a "No" when he's acted against the law

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The Nobel Peace Prize is an independent award chosen by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, not Sweden—the thread’s “Sweden” slip-up and subsequent correction is a classic example of this common mix-up. The ICC, a permanent international court established in 2002, has no police or investigative body of its own, and as the thread notes, enforcing its arrest warrants depends on member states’ cooperation—the same structural weakness as UN resolutions, which likewise sit and wait on member states to act. The split in opinion comes down to one question: whether to read this year’s award as recognition of “the rule of law,” or as a jab at the Trump administration amid its military actions and pressure on international courts—both readings show up in the thread’s reactions. Doubts about the ICC’s actual effectiveness and the political meaning of the award itself are two separate issues, and it’s easy to conflate them and jump to the mistaken conclusion that “the ICC is powerless, so the prize means nothing too.”
