  • Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascension — New ‘Boost Action’ System Revealed in Video

A newly released trailer shows the Great Sword using “Boost Action,” a new system tied to “Ascension,” the expansion believed to be coming to Capcom’s hit action title Monster Hunter Wilds. On 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board, reactions were mixed: some users were excited for the stylish new moves, while others said the animation still feels dragged down by Wilds’ original sluggish combat, raised concerns over the director being replaced by someone from the Exoprimal team, and worried about monsters being recycled. The game’s sales also became a talking point, having reached 11.4 million units sold one year after launch.

Here we go again — another PS5 Monster Hunter that's gonna sell a ton
    3AnonymousSep 2, 2026 16:21
So after this, all that's left is:
new maps with the ecosystem stripped out to make it run lighter,
    a few new monsters,
    and… that's it?

They're clearly going for a more stylish vibe, but it's still dragged down by Wilds' original sluggish action.
Guess that's just how it has to be with the Great Sword?

    Wait, did the director change?

Background and Key Points of Discussion

The Monster Hunter series has a history of adding new action mechanics with each expansion or major update, and this new “Boost Action” system fits that pattern. Opinions in the thread split over how the Great Sword moves in the video — some felt it looked less than snappy for a supposedly new feature and still weighed down by Wilds’ base-game feel, while others argued this was just a partial preview and shouldn’t be judged too harshly. The thread also touched on a possible change in the development team, though the specifics of roles and circumstances couldn’t be confirmed within the thread and remain speculative. As for the sales figures, comparing the strong initial launch pace to the more recent numbers can make growth look like it’s stalling, but it’s also fairly typical for major titles to see sales growth slow down several months after release.

  • Rio Kitagawa’s Latest Photos Go Viral: “What Is This Level of Cute?”

Recent photos of former Hello! Project member Rio Kitagawa became a hot topic on 5ch, with commenters flooding in with reactions like “what even is this level of cute?” The thread also featured a ranking of graduated members by workload, with Kitagawa placing near the top thanks to her frequent TV appearances. Some noted she had once aspired to be a TV announcer, ironically ending up with heavy television exposure anyway. Others sympathized with the fact that, despite being a rookie, she’s already pulling late-night shifts, and attention turned to how she seems to be based right in the heart of Tokyo.

Background and key points of this topic

Rio Kitagawa is a former idol who graduated from a Hello! Project group and is now appearing frequently on TV Tokyo programming. The “workload ranking” posted in the thread is just one poster’s personal impression, not an official statistic or agency announcement, so it should be taken with a grain of salt. The claim that she once aspired to be a TV announcer is also only hearsay from within the thread, and it hasn’t been confirmed whether she has ever said this herself. Note that the thread later devolved into an argument between posters over whether her workplace is in Roppongi or Akasaka, complete with “country bumpkin” insults being traded back and forth — this article has been trimmed to focus only on the discussion about Kitagawa.

  • PS Downloads Are “Usage Rights,” Not “Ownership” — 5ch: “Because It Wouldn’t Sell If They Called It Rental”

With Sony signaling plans to end PlayStation disc manufacturing in January 2028, a class-action lawsuit is underway arguing that what buyers of download games actually receive is not ownership but merely a “license to use.” According to reports, Sony’s lawyers are arguing that no “reasonable consumer” would be misled into believing they own a digital copy. On 5ch (Japan’s largest anonymous message board), the thread covering this story splits between those who say “they keep it vague because calling it a rental would kill sales” and those who counter that “other companies don’t disclose it either, so it’s unfair to single out Sony” — with the discussion eventually spilling into Japanese copyright law concepts like the distribution right and exhaustion.

As Sony signals plans to end physical PlayStation disc manufacturing in January 2028, some are calling for clearer disclosure that what buyers of digital (download) games actually hold is “merely a license to use the software, not ownership.”

Unlike a disc, digital copies can’t be lent out or resold secondhand — and if a service shuts down or something goes wrong with your account, you could lose the ability to redownload or play the game altogether. Advocates say that risk needs to be made clear to buyers.

Amid all this, reports say Sony’s lawyers argued in a class-action lawsuit over PlayStation digital game purchases that no “reasonable consumer” would mistakenly believe they “own” a digital game. Put more bluntly: if you’ve got a functioning brain, you should already know you don’t actually own it.

    58AnonymousSep 2, 2026 11:03
This whole debate only exists because, after killing off physical media, Sony went to court arguing it's a license, not ownership.
If that's your argument, people are telling you to change the label from the start — but going 'what about Nintendo, what about Microsoft' isn't actually responding to that.
If you want to say Nintendo and MS should fix it too since they do the same thing, fine — but fix your own house first.

    Re: #63
Case law has limited the scope of the 'distribution right' (hanpu-ken) to tangible objects.
I think that ruling exists precisely to stop courts from over-broadening the definition of 'reproduction.'
Given the era it was decided in, that's a pretty reasonable call, don't you think?

By the same token, it's only because of case law that the distribution right applies to games at all —
despite games not being films, which is what the right was originally written for.

(“Fūrinkazan” — a famous four-character motto, “wind, forest, fire, mountain,” associated with the warlord Takeda Shingen — is this poster’s chosen handle.)

    66AnonymousSep 2, 2026 11:17
It's really simple: with download versions of games, movies, manga, etc., what you're buying is access rights.
If they labeled it 'rental,' that would create an obligation to return it.
    68AnonymousSep 2, 2026 11:19
    Re: #66
Then why not just label it 'purchase a usage right'?
And add a note saying 'access may become unavailable.' Problem solved, right?

Yeah, nobody does that on the purchase screen.
    75AnonymousSep 2, 2026 11:24

    Re: #74
Whether anyone else does it isn't the point.
This is a counter to Sony's own legal argument specifically —

(“Shiozuke-kun,” roughly “Salted-kun,” is this poster’s chosen handle.)

    Background and key issues

Behind this debate lie two concepts from Japanese copyright law: the “distribution right” (hanpu-ken) and “exhaustion” (shōjin). In a past ruling on used-game sales, Japan’s Supreme Court held that, for packaged software, the distribution right is exhausted at the moment of first sale — which is what makes reselling secondhand discs legal. The legal sticking point in the thread is that this doctrine assumes a tangible object (a disc), and arguably doesn’t extend to data delivered as a download. Sony’s plan to end PlayStation disc production in January 2028 is the backdrop against which this lawsuit is playing out. Where the thread split was over one specific question — whether there’s an obligation to disclose the license-not-ownership distinction. One side credited Steam for spelling out the licensing terms in its terms of service; the other argued that since Microsoft and Nintendo don’t clearly disclose it either, singling out Sony is unfair. What’s easy for readers to miss is that this isn’t a Sony-specific issue — it’s a structural problem across all digitally distributed games: what you think you bought isn’t actually something you own.

  • Multiple ¥10-Billion Box-Office Contenders Lining Up for Next Year’s Movies — 5ch: “Pokémon’s Just Handing Out Poké Cards Every Week Now”

A thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyou G” (general live-discussion) board took up movies set for release next year (2027). Detective Conan, Haikyu!!, One Piece, and Pokémon’s theatrical films were all floated as candidates to clear ¥10 billion at the box office, and word surfaced that a new Demon Slayer film is all but locked in for summer 2028. The talk centered less on the films’ quality than on the trading cards handed out as attendance bonuses, with posters speculating that One Piece and Pokémon could boost turnout by giving away a new card every week. At the same time, there was plenty of griping about box office now hinging on freebies, and no shortage of jabs at scalpers cashing in on those bonus cards.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

A box office of ¥10 billion is generally treated as the benchmark for a major hit in Japanese cinema, and in recent years whether theatrical anime films clear that line has become a recurring topic. The dividing line in this thread was whether turnout is being driven by the popularity of the films themselves or by fans chasing the trading cards given out as attendance bonuses. Posters repeatedly pointed to cases of One Piece and Pokémon bonus cards selling for high prices on the resale market, arguing that this is what’s really boosting attendance figures. It’s worth noting that the claim of a new Demon Slayer film being all but confirmed for summer 2028 is speculation from within the thread, not an official announcement.

  • Stray Dogs Attack 60 Goats in Miyakojima, City Fears ‘Are People Next?’

It has come to light that in Miyakojima City, Okinawa Prefecture, about 60 farmed goats have been bitten by stray dogs in a string of incidents since the start of this year. Such cases were said to be rare in ordinary years, and goat farmers and city officials are increasingly worried that “people, including children, could be attacked next.” There have also been reports of dogs breaching a 3-meter-high fence to get in. On 5ch, users swapped firsthand accounts covering regional differences in how often stray dogs are spotted, the reality of hunting dogs being abandoned in the mountains and turning feral, and the risk of rabies — sparking a broader discussion about what’s driving the wild dog problem.

Such cases were said to be almost nonexistent in ordinary years, making this year’s numbers stand out sharply. Goat farmers and the city are growing increasingly concerned that “the damage to livestock could escalate to the point that people, including children, get attacked.”

In the cities they get caught quickly, so stray dogs have dropped off. But out in the countryside, they're up in the mountains. After a few generations, strays turn into fully wild dogs — they end up as wolf-like wild animals that pack together and attack animals and people.

I've been chased twice by a dog dragging its chain while jogging at night. I'd already scoped out several spots to flee to if I ever got attacked around there, so I ducked into one. Ah, yeah — I heard something similar from relatives out in the countryside. A dog that seemed like a tame hunting dog wandered in once, and thinking about it, there's a good chance it had been abandoned by a hunter. Since rabies is a factor too, it'd probably get sorted out once public health authorities step in. Actually, stray dogs were everywhere up through the '70s, but once rabies became a concern they were culled, and by the '90s you barely saw strays anymore.

A dog that has never once been kept as a human's pet since birth is called a "yaken" (wild dog).
    111AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:15
    Re: #89
Sure, some got separated from their owners, but most are abandoned hunting dogs. Once a hunting dog gets old and stops being useful, it gets dumped in the mountains. Hunting dogs are often lent back and forth between hunters, so they've been bred to obediently follow anyone's commands — but that comes at the cost of a weaker homing instinct, meaning once they're dumped in the mountains, they can't find their way back. And apparently people dump them knowing full well that's exactly what'll happen.
    160AnonymousSep 2, 2026 18:04
    Re: #111
Huh, I always pictured them as the hunter's loyal partner, so that's a bit of a shock.

Now that you mention it, maybe because they can't find their own way home, I used to occasionally see one just sitting in the bed of some random, unrelated pickup truck, waiting for its owner.
    117AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:24

    120AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:26
    Re: #117
Not just with hunting dogs, but there are quite a few people who abandon dogs because "I don't want to watch it die" or "it's too sad if the pound puts it down." The logic seems to be, "well, if I let it go, maybe it can survive as a stray." There are even people who abandon old dogs on that logic, and honestly, that's just messed up.
    138AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:40
    Re: #132
The pound doesn't have the budget for it either. And even if they spent a fortune catching every single one, some idiot would just go dump more dogs again.

If a rabid dog ever bit someone, it'd be an absolute uproar. Then the pound would probably launch a full-scale capture operation, throwing a massive budget at it.

Well, that's Japan for you — stingy on prevention funding, but the moment something turns into a real crisis, they'll blow hundreds of times that amount dealing with it.

    159AnonymousSep 2, 2026 18:04
    Re: #157
No need to bother — Tohoku can just "source" its own locally lol

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Miyakojima is a remote island off the main Okinawan archipelago, and while stray and wild dogs have sharply declined nationwide in recent years — especially in urban areas — this remains a problem with major regional disparities. In the thread, posters shared firsthand accounts from places like Shunan in Yamaguchi Prefecture and Kagawa Prefecture where wild dogs are still around, which clashed with the common assumption that “you just don’t see them in cities.” Japan has had no confirmed cases of domestically contracted rabies since 1957, so the thread’s worry about “is rabies really a risk” is low as an actual likelihood — though the possibility of it being brought in from overseas or transmitted via wildlife isn’t zero. Culling stray dogs is also complicated by the Animal Welfare and Management Act, meaning municipalities can’t simply euthanize them on their own initiative; capture and shelter housing by public health centers remains the standard response. Where opinions in the thread diverged was over the origin of the wild dogs — whether to see them as hunting dogs that simply got lost, or hunting dogs deliberately abandoned in the mountains — and several specific firsthand accounts were offered backing the latter view.

  • Dodgers Crushed 8-13 After Allowing 5 Homers — Ohtani Gets a Hit But Hits Season’s 2nd-Worst Homer Drought at 54 At-Bats

In a game between the Dodgers and Cardinals on September 1 (September 2 Japan time), the Dodgers allowed 5 home runs and lost 8-13. Shohei Ohtani managed just 1 hit, and his home-run-less at-bat streak has now reached 54 — the second-worst mark of the season. He was pulled partway through the 8th inning. On 5ch, opinions split over what’s behind Ohtani’s slump and whether he needs rest, with some pointing to the toll of two-way play or the demands of childcare, while others were skeptical, asking whether this is really a job tiring enough to need a break.

all he does is swing a bat and run the bases —

Doesn't look like it takes much out of you.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Ohtani is heading into the late stretch of the season while continuing his two-way pitcher-hitter role, and posters in the thread had previously noted a tendency for fatigue to show around this same point in past seasons. This latest “54 at-bats without a home run” is the second-worst mark of the season, which numerically backs up just how long the slump has dragged on. At the same time, the Dodgers’ division title is considered nearly certain, and some in the thread argued that rather than pushing to keep playing, he should be saving himself for the playoffs. Views on whether he needs rest and on the cause of the slump ranged from fatigue from childcare to the toll of two-way play, but it’s worth noting these were all speculation from posters — there has been no official explanation from the team or from Ohtani himself.

On 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board, some users welcomed the policy change, while others pointed out the contradiction of claiming to “go multi-platform” while still skipping an Xbox release — sparking debate over Xbox’s tiny market share in Japan, the limited resources of small-to-mid-size third-party developers, and Falcom’s past struggles breaking into Nintendo hardware.

    — The Switch and PS5 versions of this title come bundled with a download code for ‘Trails in the Sky FC’ as a first-print/pre-order bonus. Could you tell us the story behind including that?

Also, are there any plans for HD remasters of ‘Trails in the Sky SC’ or ‘The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 3rd’ (hereafter, ‘the 3rd’)?

    Kondo:

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Third-party console gaming used to mean the PlayStation camp, but in recent years the standard workflow has shifted to developing for PC (Steam) first and porting to consoles afterward, which lowers the bar for multi-platform releases, especially for smaller developers. Xbox, meanwhile, has a small installed base in Japan, making it hard to justify porting and operating costs against expected sales — which is why many Japanese publishers leave it out. The download ratio for ‘Trails in the Sky the 1st’ cited in the thread (51% PS5, 27% Switch 2) was calculated by thread posters themselves from an official published breakdown, not pulled directly from a primary source — worth keeping in mind. It’s also worth noting that this “multi-platform” push doesn’t mean releasing on every single platform; it’s a business decision to selectively choose platforms expected to be profitable, a nuance that’s easy to lose sight of from the thread discussion alone.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

It’s no longer unusual for celebrities to take legal action over online defamation, and cases progressing from disclosure requests to damages claims have been increasing in recent years. In the thread, users noted examples where damages of several hundred thousand yen up to around one million yen per case have reportedly been awarded when habitual or malicious behavior is recognized, and specific names of the SNS platforms and aggregator sites allegedly involved were floated. The Act on the Handling of Information Distribution Platforms (the “Joho Platform Act”), which took effect in 2024, requires major SNS operators to respond promptly to takedown requests — legal groundwork that has lowered the barrier for individuals filing disclosure requests. That said, the thread wasn’t uniformly supportive: some asked “why didn’t she deal with this sooner,” while others made cynical remarks framing legal action as a new income stream. It’s worth noting that Watanabe’s side has not disclosed the specific content of the abusive posts, the details of the harm suffered, or how many people are being pursued, so the speculation in the thread should not be treated as established fact.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The Monster Hunter series has been ported and re-released across handheld and home consoles many times over, and each time 5ch’s gaming board has coined a new insulting nickname — “Busuzawa” (the Vita port), “Buhicchi” (the Switch port), “Half-Rise” (a dismissive term treating Rise as a stripped-down version). The focus of this thread isn’t really those organically-coined insults, though — it’s the ironic twist that the manufacturer’s own official product name turns out to be funnier than any of them, which is exactly the kind of in-joke this “hardware/industry” (geha) board thrives on. That said, claims about which sells better, Rise or Wilds, or whether the Switch 2 version will take off, aren’t established facts — they’re just speculation and impressions from an anonymous message board, so take them with a grain of salt. Some posts in the original thread also contained remarks disparaging specific nationalities or individuals; those have been excluded from this article.

Alongside opinions on the song itself, the thread mixed in popularity comparisons with AKB-affiliated groups and “kawaii-style” (Kawaii Lab) idols, plus debate over Hello! Project’s overall “going viral” strategy. Some commenters harshly criticized the lyrics and concept, while others defended the single by pointing out that past releases followed a similar formula, leading to a split in opinion.

"The secondhand embarrassment is unreal," huh
    3AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:14
The tables have completely turned on AKB.
AKB's new single is super popular right now.

    Re: #3
Yeah, you can tell it's catching on.
    48AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:31
    Re: #3
At the end of the day it's all about the male otaku.

    RESCENE = AKB Juice
    ILLIT = CANDY TUNE
    They'll never win again.
    7AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:17
Kind of late to be making a fuss about this, honestly.

    Re: #1
    Man, this feels great.
Chasing viral hits is just lame.
    "Purikyukkyukyu" was cringe too.
    Ah, serves them right.
    10AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:18
If you're gonna say that, "Kawadame" and "Purikyu" both have equally dumb lyrics.
    11AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:18
Must be nice for Hello! Project — no normal person cares about their songs, so there's no risk of getting dragged…
    12AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:19
Out of the Kawaii Lab groups, isn't this one the cutest?
    18AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:23
    Re: #12
My bad, I mixed it up.
The one I thought was cute was Kyuusto.
    13AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:20
Getting way too full of themselves.
    Hate it.
    Classic Hello! Project.
    15AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:21
Tokisen's title tracks have had ridiculous lyrics lately too, but I guess that's just the trend now, can't be helped.
    16AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:21
For a group so obsessed with "cute," the word "Souishi" (consensus) is way too uncute.
    22AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:24
Kawaii Lab went viral on purpose.
Hello! Project went viral by accident, out of sheer luck.
    23AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:25
Juice=Juice, that mysterious group whose stock just keeps rising even though all they do is sing, dance, and say hi.
    25AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:26
Once the hype dies down and people calm down, of course that's how it goes.
It was just a fad, like catching the measles.
Same thing happened with Kyary Pamyu Pamyu.
    35AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:28
Were their previous songs actually any good, though?
    40AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:29
    Re: #35
    "Baibai Fight" is pretty popular.
    36AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:28
"Shangri-La" is pretty much a straight copy of the original song.
    49AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:32
    Re: #36
Honestly it deserves to have like 90% of it ripped off lol
    37AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:28
This is the kind of song an anime voice actor would've sung back in the day.
    39AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:28
They already made it onto Kohaku, so who cares.
Just get Hello! Project trending more.
    42AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:29
Getting sick of the "I'm so cute" schtick.
This is a tailwind for Juice=Juice.
    43AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:29
That kind of stuff takes energy to keep consuming, too.
    Everyone's probably just worn out.
Maybe folk songs will come back in style next.
    44AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:29
At this rate, Kawaii Lab's gonna snatch up Yamazaki Aoi too.
    57AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:35
    Re: #44
Moremi already provided a song for FRUITS ZIPPER before this.
    45AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:30
I don't want to actually listen to the song so I wouldn't know — why's it getting hate?
    46AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:30
Because "Kurakura," their cute-concept song, was pretty rough.
    50AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:32
    Re: #28
Sounds like a song mocking otaku who jump on trends without thinking.
    52AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:33
Even if people get tired of the "cute" concept, that alone wouldn't get them dragged.
The song's just bad, plain and simple.
    53AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:33
Kawaii Lab and Akimoto-produced groups always get flak, but isn't that just because they get more attention?
Hello! Project as a whole is more at the level of being ignored entirely.
    54AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:34
What's funny is that real cuteness has shown up in AKB now,
and it makes all the "I'm so cute" posturing from Kawaii Lab look absolutely ridiculous lol
    56AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:35
If this counts as a garbage song, Hello! Project would be getting flamed every single time.
    58AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:36
If you set your mind to it, if you set your mind to it,
    Somehow it'll work out.
    Don't let that spirit go,
    Don't let that spirit go,
    Don't let that spirit go,

    Don't let that spirit go,
    Don't let that spirit go
    59AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:39
Isn't this just some old-timer anti from Asahi Net (an old-school Japanese ISP, slang for an out-of-touch old internet user) causing a ruckus?
    60AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:39
Hello! Project fans are fans because they genuinely believe in Hello! Project's music, but the antis just praise whatever rival group as a club to beat them with — so their club breaks pretty easily.
    61AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:39
I'm a Juice=Juice fan and was watching CDTV, and I was taken aback that they'd actually air CANDY TUNE's new song on network TV?!
Any other Hello! Project group's new single would've been way better, no question.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

What the thread really centered on wasn’t the quality of “Souishi♡So Free” itself, but the balance of power in popularity between the Hello! Project camp and AKB/Kawaii Lab-affiliated groups (Kawaii Kenkyuujo, or “Kawaii Research Institute,” groups). Because the discussion coincided with a period when AKB-affiliated new singles were gaining traction, two views coexisted: the sense that Hello! Project had been “overtaken,” and a cooler take that “Hello! Project was never reaching a mainstream audience to begin with, so the risk of real backlash is small.” Reactions on 5ch were far from unanimous — plenty of posts pushed back on the intensity of the criticism on X, arguing things like “it’s not that great a song to begin with” or “Hello! Project gets this kind of flak all the time.” One thing readers may misread is that the thread title’s “getting dragged” doesn’t mean X as a whole has reached a consensus — it’s simply 5ch’s shorthand for “this is generating buzz.” Also, proper nouns like “Kawaii Lab,” “Tokisen,” and “Kurakura” are insider abbreviations that can be hard to follow at first glance, but they’re all used as comparison points rooted in the idol industry’s long-running factional rivalries.
