  • GTA6 Launch Trailer Drops — 5ch: ‘Nobody’s Even Talking About the Game Itself LOL’

The launch trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA6) has been released, drawing a flood of reactions on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. The footage is said to show gameplay captured on a standard PS5, and while many were stunned by the graphical quality, there was also notable anxiety that release is approaching without a clear sense of how the actual gameplay feels. Threads also debated the thin treatment of the Xbox version, as well as whether the Japanese release is subject to heavier content regulation (a “censored version”) compared to the overseas Xbox/PC releases.

Seriously, it's being treated like the Xbox version doesn't even exist, what the hell is this
It is coming out on Xbox too, right?
Paying for exclusivity just to pull a dick move like this is beyond messed up

    But uncensored
The real barrier is the censorship

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

GTA6 has had a long stretch between its announcement and release, and anticipation runs high on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board — but in the thread right after the trailer dropped, reactions focused more on peripheral details than the content of the game itself. Underlying this is a long-running “censored version” debate over whether the Japanese PS5 release is more restricted than overseas versions in terms of violent content, plus the tendency for marketing of popular titles to lean toward PS5, which easily gets read as “Xbox being snubbed.” Within the thread, some corrections tempered the heated reactions, with posters pointing out things like “they just bought the ad rights” and “the same thing happened with Monster Hunter Wilds.” At the same time, the anxiety over no uncut gameplay footage being shown even this close to release draws on precedents like Wolverine, whose pre-release gameplay reveal went over poorly — a wariness that remains deeply rooted on the Geha board.

  • “Build Our Own OS to Ditch Microsoft,” Canadian Forum Debates

A discussion broke out in a Canadian Lemmy community after an article argued that Canada could free itself from dependence on Microsoft Windows—and save millions of dollars—by developing its own operating system. Many agreed with the premise, but the sticking point became whether a brand-new OS really needs to be built from scratch. Commenters noted that open-source alternatives like OpenBSD and NixOS already exist, and that the Netherlands is pursuing a similar effort, leading to a mix of “switching is faster than building new” opinions and a more playful back-and-forth brainstorming names for a new Canadian OS.

If you crowdsourced this with like-minded partners around the world, you could save even more. The beginning of the end was the moment Microsoft basically said, 'We'll do business in your country, but we won't follow your country's laws.'
    7Anonymous2026-10-15 05:10
Re: #4 Exactly, and yet nobody treats it as a real issue. Everyone thinks protecting data sovereignty alone is enough. But Microsoft has openly said it'll ultimately answer to the US no matter what other countries' laws say. I expected a lot more countries to be furious about that, but it hasn't really happened.
    5Anonymous2026-10-15 11:24
Wait, hold on—why not just use an OS that already exists?!
    31Anonymous2026-10-15 14:20
Re: #5 That's exactly what EU countries are doing, one after another.
    6Anonymous2026-10-15 01:05
There's OpenBSD, there are open-source alternatives already out there—I don't get why Canada would need to build a brand-new Windows replacement. Pair NextCloud-AIO with EuroOffice and you've already got something working. The only things missing are AI and surveillance features, and there are already open-source agent tools that can run open models for the AI side. Not that anyone actually wants the surveillance features anyway.
    38Anonymous2026-10-15 02:43
Re: #6 Probably because you'd need to rewrite a bunch of proprietary tools to varying degrees, and that takes design work, money, and time. It's harder than regular software because if you mess it up, you could end up wrecking someone's life.
    8Anonymous2026-10-15 05:54
I made this exact same argument to several Australian universities and senior government officials. It wouldn't just cut costs—it would grow domestic industry and technical skills too. Of course, I never got a reply. Nobody cares about anything that doesn't line their own pockets.

    25Anonymous2026-10-15 03:00
If you feel stuck with Windows because of some proprietary app, clones of those apps are already in development too. You're free to switch right now. They're only at about 60% feature parity at the moment, but the devs say they can get to 99% within a few months.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The backdrop here is the US CLOUD Act, which requires American companies like Microsoft to comply with US government requests even when the data is stored overseas. The remarks in replies 4 and 7 about Microsoft “ultimately answering to the US regardless of other countries’ laws” are referring to this. The thread split over whether Canada should build a new OS entirely from scratch or switch to an existing open-source OS like OpenBSD or NixOS, with more commenters favoring the latter. Some pointed to the Netherlands’ efforts around NixOS, which is a real, reported initiative—though it’s worth noting that the Canadian government hasn’t officially announced any comparable plan of its own. The back half of the thread drifts into lighthearted brainstorming of names like “CanaDOS” and “BeaverOS,” so it’s worth reading with that in mind rather than as a rigorous debate over technical feasibility.

  • Kohaku Hosting Shake-Up: NHK’s First Pick Bakarythm Fell Through, Masato Sakai Steps In

It’s been reported that NHK had approached comedian Bakarythm — currently writing the screenplay for an NHK morning drama — to host the year-end “Kohaku Uta Gassen” song contest, but negotiations broke down, and Masato Sakai was ultimately picked as host instead. The selection reportedly also factored in support for areas hit by the Kumamoto earthquakes, which sparked chatter since Bakarythm is from Fukuoka while Sakai is from Miyazaki. On the thread, plenty of posters voiced skepticism about whether a comedian is up to hosting Kohaku, with some bringing up Teruyoshi Uchimura’s past stint as overall host, and others arguing the job should just go to an NHK announcer.

[Behind the Scenes of the Kohaku Host Selection] Kumamoto earthquake relief support became a deciding factor — NHK approached Fukuoka-born morning-drama screenwriter Bakarythm, but talks fell through, so Miyazaki-born Masato Sakai got the nod

Lighting up New Year’s Eve as Kohaku hosts will be Masato Sakai and Kazunari Ninomiya, who play sworn brothers in “VIVANT,” alongside Mana Ashida.

Behind the picking of two stars from commercial-network dramas lies an approach to a popular comedian that never panned out, plus a “rule between husband and wife” in the Sakai household. [Part 1 of 2]

It's like Waseda being your safety school below the Japan Institute of the Moving Image

Background and Key Points of This Topic

In most years, Kohaku’s hosting lineup pairs an NHK announcer with an actor or singer having a moment, and it’s rare for a comedian to be put in sole charge. Emiko Uenuma, whose name came up in the thread, drew criticism over her handling of the proceedings during her stint as host, and that episode is the usual reference point for the “comedians can’t handle hosting” argument. At the same time, both Hiroyuki Ariyoshi and Tamori have served as overall host in the past, so it isn’t as if comedians have been categorically excluded. One point easy to misread in this report is the link between hometown and selection criteria: while Kumamoto earthquake relief support is said to have factored into the decision, the article never makes clear whether that “disaster-affected area” framing applies to Bakarythm (from Fukuoka) or Sakai (from Miyazaki). The thread’s discussion largely skipped past that ambiguity, focusing instead on debating comedians’ popularity and hosting ability.

  • Discontinued Snack Revival Wishes Flood 5ch Thread — “Sales Were Bad in Eastern Japan”

On a 5ch thread titled “Snacks that have already been discontinued but I want brought back,” users poured in with requests for the revival of nostalgic treats like Morinaga’s Choco Flake, Hachibun no Go-chip, and coffee-flavored gum.

But as the thread went on, a wave of corrections rolled in: “that one’s not actually discontinued.” It turned out Miyako Kombu and Bourbon’s Pikkara are both still on sale today. Calbee’s Karl, meanwhile, was never discontinued nationwide — due to poor sales in Eastern Japan, Calbee only ended sales there, and it’s still available in Western Japan. The thread’s central theme became this disconnect: snacks people thought were gone for good turned out to still be obtainable after all.

Background and Talking Points on This Topic

The classic twist in these Showa- and Heisei-era candy nostalgia threads on 5ch is the “I thought it was discontinued, but it’s actually still on sale” moment. This time, too, comments were quick to correct the record on Miyako Kombu (#26) and Bourbon’s Pikkara (#19), pointing out that neither had actually been discontinued. Karl (#66) wasn’t discontinued outright either — around 2017, Calbee ended sales to Eastern Japan and switched to selling it exclusively in Western Japan. In other words, “discontinued” can mean anything from a full nationwide end of production, to a regional cutback, to simply having become hard to find — distinctions that are easy to blur when relying on memory alone. The disagreement in the thread centered on sorting out these facts, while opinions on the snacks themselves were largely in agreement. Many long-running penny candies and snacks haven’t actually vanished — they’ve simply been regionalized or swapped for successor products, and items reported as “discontinued” often turn out to still be available if you look closely.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “Snacks that have already been discontinued but I want brought back.”

  • Pianist Kyohei Sorita Charged Over 144 km/h Run on Tokyo’s Shutoko Expressway — His Own Book’s ‘Wild Youth’ Confession Has 5ch Buzzing

On October 6, major media outlets reported in unison that pianist Kyohei Sorita (32), known worldwide, had been indicted without physical detention for driving 144 km/h on the Shutoko Expressway. Sorita made history at the 2021 Chopin International Piano Competition, becoming the first Japanese pianist in 51 years to take 2nd place, and earned a reputation as ‘the pianist whose tickets are hardest to get,’ having been featured on the documentary series Jonetsu Tairiku three times. The report also brought renewed attention to the wilder side of his younger self that he’d revealed in his own book — talking casually to everyone regardless of status, and saying things like ‘screw it all.’ On the 5ch Geinou Supo Sokuhou+ (entertainment/sports news) board, opinions split between discomfort at media coverage that brushed off a serious speeding violation with the word ‘yancha’ (roughly, ‘wild’ or ‘mischievous’), and others weighing its severity against past celebrity scandals.

‘Talks Casually to Everyone,’ ‘Screw Everyone Else’ — World-Renowned Pianist Caught ‘Blasting Through the Shutoko at 144 km/h,’ Revealed His Own ‘Wild Side’ in His Book

The news that broke across major media on October 6 — that a world-renowned pianist had been indicted without detention for driving 144 km/h on the Shutoko Expressway — reached even people with no interest in classical music.

Pianist Kyohei Sorita (32) is known for the feat of becoming the first Japanese pianist in 51 years to take 2nd place at the Chopin International Piano Competition, held once every five years. Domestically he’s dubbed ‘the pianist whose tickets are hardest to get’ and is a celebrity who has appeared on Jonetsu Tairiku (TBS) three times.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The Chopin International Piano Competition is held once every five years, and Kyohei Sorita made history in 2021 by becoming the first Japanese pianist in 51 years to take 2nd place. The current indictment is a ‘zaitaku kiso’ (in-home prosecution without physical detention) — a standard procedure for traffic offense cases — and does not in itself imply a sentence or guilt. Where the thread split was over the use of the word ‘yancha’ (roughly, ‘wild’ or ‘mischievous’): some were uncomfortable with media headlines using such a casual term to describe a serious offense like driving 144 km/h on the Shutoko Expressway, while others weighed it against past celebrity scandals (such as Ryoko Hirosue’s accident or Ebizo Ichikawa’s assault case) to judge its relative severity. Note that these comparisons involve separate incidents with different contexts and levels of seriousness, and are not facts established within this article. Claims such as ‘featured on Jonetsu Tairiku three times’ or ‘supported by Mori Seiki’ are hearsay from within the thread and have not been confirmed by news reports.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou Supo Sokuhou+) thread “‘Talks Casually to Everyone,’ ‘Screw Everyone Else’ — World-Renowned Pianist Kyohei Sorita, Charged for ‘Blasting Through the Shutoko at 144 km/h,’ Revealed His Own ‘Wild Youth’ in His Book.”

  • Japan’s Navy Still Uses Morse Code — Here’s Why They Don’t Rely on Radio Waves

A news report revealing that Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) still uses Morse code communication became a hot topic on 5ch. Exchanges using signal lamps and telegraph keys might look old-fashioned, but Morse code remains a valid method today because the very long wave (VLF) band used to reach submarines can only transmit an on/off signal — it can’t carry a human voice. The thread buzzed with a mix of technical discussion and idle chatter: some pointed out the irony in the article’s phrase “without relying on radio waves” (isn’t VLF still radio?), others brought up the story of SOS Morse beeps being cut from the intro of a hit song, and still others swapped notes on how Morse code has been depicted in anime and movies.

“Dit-dit-dit, dah-dah-dah…” — this kind of communication is still in active use today! Why does the JMSDF keep using it?

Communication methods using signal lamps and telegraph keys

When most people hear “Morse code,” they probably picture an old war movie with the classic “dit-dit, dah-dah” exchanges.

The only frequency band that can reach a submarine is very long wave (VLF), and the only communication it can carry is a Morse-style on/off signal.

I've got a coworker who's also into amateur radio, so we actually use it in important meetings lol. It's super handy lol

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Behind this topic lies a constraint of the very long wave (VLF) band used to communicate with submarines. VLF can’t carry a continuous waveform like voice — it can only send information by switching the signal on and off — which makes it a natural fit for encoded communication like Morse code. On the thread, opinions split over whether Morse code counts as “analog” or “digital.” Sending information purely through signal on/off is binary and leans digital, but the operational side — where a human adjusts the length and spacing of dots and dashes by feel — could be seen as more analog. There was also pushback on the original article’s phrase “without relying on radio waves,” since signal lamps still use light, which is itself a form of electromagnetic wave — meaning it’s technically radio waves after all, strictly speaking. It’s a communication method that turns out to be surprisingly deep, open to discussion from both a technical-definition angle and a real-world-usage angle.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (News Speed+) thread “JMSDF’s “Dit-dit-dit, dah-dah-dah…” Communication Still in Active Use! The Reason They Keep Using It Without Relying on Radio Waves.”

  • Which female artists can a 40-year-old listen to without embarrassment? 5ch: “Listening to something just because it’s not embarrassing is lame”

A thread on 5ch asking “tell me some female artists a 40-something guy can listen to without embarrassment” took off. Suggestions ranged from overseas names like Taylor Swift and Joni Mitchell to Japanese singer-songwriters like Toki Asako, Omori Seiko, Ishibashi Eiko, and Nakamura Kaho. At the same time, some pushed back on the whole premise, arguing “it’s lame to listen to something you don’t even like just because it’s not embarrassing” — and the thread drifted from song picks into a debate about the mindset of choosing music by how embarrassing it is in the first place.

Don't just list off songs you were listening to back in your 40s

    Background and talking points

What stands out in this thread is the sheer range of genres among the names put forward. Everything from major overseas acts like Taylor Swift and Joni Mitchell, to Japanese singer-songwriters like Toki Asako, Omori Seiko, Ishibashi Eiko, and Nakamura Kaho, to names from the Hello! Project idol world all got thrown into the mix. Underlying this is the fact that the standard of “not embarrassing for a middle-aged guy to listen to” differs from person to person — and within the thread, that surfaced as pushback along the lines of “it’s lame to listen to something you don’t even like just because it’s not embarrassing,” which shifted the conversation away from the actual song picks and toward whether choosing music based on embarrassment makes sense at all. One thing readers could easily misread: none of the names mentioned were being endorsed as objectively “approved for middle-aged guys” — each one was simply a poster listing their own personal taste.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “Tell me some female artists a 40-something guy can listen to without embarrassment.”

  • Wakayama Has ‘Nothing But Mandarins and Plums,’ Say 5ch Users — Locals Fire Back

A thread titled ‘Wakayama Prefecture has nothing but mandarins and Nanko plums’ was posted on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G board. In response to the pessimistic post, rebuttals poured in citing the prefecture’s tourism draws and specialty products — the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trail, the Kumano Sanzan shrines, kue grouper and tuna fishing, a beach where visitors can swim with whales, and the nation’s top production of sansho pepper and figs. Still, opinions split on how to view Wakayama’s appeal, with some pointing out that ‘topping production rankings doesn’t mean it has any brand power’ and others self-deprecatingly agreeing that ‘in the end it’s sad that there’s really nothing there.’ The conversation even veered into a comparison with Fukui Prefecture as a fellow ‘unremarkable prefecture,’ sparking the kind of lively back-and-forth typical of these regional-rivalry threads.

A lot of plum products advertise themselves as using Wakayama's Nanko plums

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Wakayama Prefecture ranks first nationwide in production of dried figs and sansho pepper, and beyond agricultural products like Nanko plums and Arida mandarins, it’s also rich in tourism resources — the UNESCO World Heritage Kumano Kodo trail and Kumano Sanzan shrines, prized fish like kue grouper and tuna, and a beach where visitors can swim alongside whales. The thread title’s claim that the prefecture has ‘nothing but mandarins and Nanko plums’ is really just self-deprecating bait, and as the many rebuttals in the replies show, it doesn’t hold up to scrutiny. Where opinion diverged was on the point that topping the production charts doesn’t translate directly into name recognition or brand power — revealing a gap between Wakayama’s number-one rankings and how well the public actually knows about them. The thread also brought up a comparison with Fukui Prefecture, similarly seen as ‘unremarkable,’ but this is best understood as a familiar recurring bit on 5ch — regional-rivalry banter — rather than a genuine dig at either prefecture.

    Background and Key Points

Rather than an official thread for any single team, this is a running live-commentary thread covering NPB broadly, with fans of the Tigers, BayStars, Giants, and other teams all posting together. The Climax Series (CS) is a playoff format in which the top three regular-season teams compete through a First Stage and a Final Stage for a spot in the Japan Series, with lower-ranked teams granted a win advantage. Note that the posts in this thread don’t specify exactly which CS game or opponent matchup corresponds to the Tigers’ second straight scoreless game, so the precise schedule can’t be confirmed from the thread alone. Also, mocking nicknames for team fans like “Chin” (for Tigers fans) and “Hamekasu” (for BayStars fans) are long-standing stock phrases in 5ch baseball live-commentary threads, used in a different spirit than genuine personal insults.

  • Mori Kasumi Unsettled by Registered Mail Deliveries — “Same Guy Keeps Showing Up…” — Sparks 5ch Debate Over ID Checks

Freelance announcer Mori Kasumi revealed on the October 10 broadcast of ABEMA’s “Ura-aka Uraraka” that she moved house after growing uneasy about the same postal worker repeatedly delivering her registered mail. Registered mail sometimes requires identity confirmation — checking the recipient’s name and address — for “addressee only” deliveries, and since delivery areas are fixed, it’s not unusual for the same staffer to handle a given address. The remark split opinion on 5ch: some said ID checks are simply standard procedure, while others said they understood her wariness given her fame. Posters also shared separate gripes about postal workers’ confidentiality obligations and contactless-delivery mishaps.

Mori Kasumi shudders over registered mail delivery… “I got scared, so I moved” — “Since it’s my real name… the same person keeps coming…”

Freelance announcer Mori Kasumi appeared on ABEMA’s “Ura-aka Uraraka” on the 10th.

When a post reading “What’s with getting the doorbell rung even though I requested contactless delivery?” went viral, Umezawa Tomio remarked, “Isn’t it just thoughtful of them? I mean, these days some people steal packages left at the door — mine got taken.”

    Re: #60
If they scan it with their phone it comes up instantly though?

    Background and Points of Debate

Registered mail — especially “addressee-only” delivery — comes with a built-in system requiring on-the-spot identity verification, sometimes including a request to show a driver’s license or similar ID. Because delivery is assigned by postal-service district, the same carrier handling a given address for as long as someone lives there is standard practice, not special surveillance or harassment. The debate on the thread centered on Mori’s reaction of finding this routine, system-mandated procedure “scary” — some explained why ID checks are necessary, while others said they understood her wariness about having her address and real name known given her fame. It’s worth noting that the thread’s more definitive claims about individual delivery workers’ conduct are largely unsubstantiated speculation, not evidence of how things actually are.
