  • A PC to Match the PS5 Now Costs Over ¥300,000? 5ch Says ‘Even the Bare Minimum Needs ¥200,000’

A thread on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board claimed that ‘building a PC equal to the PS5 naturally costs ¥300,000–400,000 these days.’ Gaming PCs that used to be built for just ¥100,000-something now reportedly need at least ¥200,000 at the bare minimum, posters said, blaming rising prices for peripheral parts like SSDs and memory. Meanwhile, some noted that the PS5’s GPU performance is roughly on par with the older RTX 2060 class, while others raised concerns about the console’s future — including the lack of real ownership over downloaded games and the trend toward dropping optical drives. A few pushed back, arguing a PC could still be built for ¥100,000-something, but no one could agree on where the real price line falls.

    Time to rethink your assumptions.

So is the PS5 basically being dumped below cost? It's already been cracked so it can be used as a PC too — could reporting it to the Fair Trade Commission actually get Sony penalized?

It's because it's built purely for gaming with zero unnecessary features.

Downloaded PS5 games come with no real ownership —
just like with movies, Sony could wipe them out on a whim.

The console's also been cracked, so future compatibility is shaky too,

Just think about why the PS5 hasn't become the mainstream pick:
    No Steam.
    No general-purpose versatility.
No appeal as a dedicated machine.

All that proves is how narrow your view is, how your thinking only draws on info that validates your own choice, and how oblivious you are to your own cognitive bias — and honestly, how dumb that is.

    This one's clearly wrong.
Even if the next Xbox supported Steam, would it actually beat the Switch 2 or PS6? No, right?
Especially in Japan, sites like DLsite (a Japanese digital game platform) probably have more users than Steam anyway.

Furthermore, the real reason the PS5 can't become mainstream is that the Switch 1 and Switch 2 exist — in other words, because Nintendo exists.

People often say '2060' or '2060 Super,' but even the RTX 2000 series can take advantage of the latest super-resolution tech, so the PS5 is actually a notch below even that.
    96AnonymousOct 17, 2026 22:24
    Re: #95
PS5's QSSR (its super-resolution upscaler) uses the GPU itself,
so it eats into graphics performance.
It's less about making the graphics pretty
and more about patching up the rough image from performance mode.
The 2060, on the other hand, uses Tensor cores, so the GPU isn't sacrificed,
and it can produce cleaner image quality — that's a pretty big gap.

    94AnonymousOct 17, 2026 22:16
    Re: #79
That spec would be a breeze even for a bare-bones ¥140,000 gaming PC.
The RTX 5050 is aimed at casual users who just want things to run,

That's not necessarily true. With parts prices skyrocketing, there'll be more and more people who can't afford to upgrade or replace PC parts and end up going back to consoles.
In Japan that mostly means Switch 2, but overseas it wouldn't be surprising if they flowed back to PlayStation or Xbox.

    Re: #102
It's a tradition going back to the PS2, after all.
The Switch 2 has the same performance level as a PS2 too.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Since late 2025, semiconductor shortages driven by AI-related demand have pushed up prices for SSDs and memory, making it harder to build a self-assembled PC at the same performance tier as a few years ago. The PS5’s APU is from AMD’s Zen 2 generation, released in 2020, and its GPU performance is often said to sit around the level of an RTX 2060 — close to the comparisons made in the thread. It’s worth noting, as technical background, that the PS5’s super-resolution tech, QSSR, processes using GPU resources, which tends to eat into rendering performance — a point often raised when comparing image quality against NVIDIA’s approach, which offloads that work to dedicated Tensor cores instead. The increasing number of disc-drive-less models and the issue of not truly owning downloaded software are also long-standing concerns among console users — worries that game libraries could be lost if a service shuts down — and are not unique claims specific to this thread.

A casual chat thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyō G” (General Live-Commentary) board lit up over the question of everyone’s favorite Pokémon. Amid quirky picks like “Emolga” and “Jolteon — just kidding, Tentacool,” one instant reply — “It’s Luxio!” — got the biggest reaction of all.

Several other topics ran in parallel in the same thread, including the stir caused by a popular VTuber who greeted male listeners with the blunt term “osu” (a rough, masculine way of saying “hey”), plus a run of jokes riffing on participants’ facial expressions caught on screen.

You can really feel that "late-night snack" mindset seeping through (slang implying a thirsty, desperate vibe)

    Background and Key Points

Part of the thread touched on a popular VTuber who stirred up controversy after greeting male listeners with the term “osu.” Reactions were split — some pinned the controversy on her remark itself, while others framed it as backlash against the sexually harassing comments fans later directed at her, suggesting this isn’t a story that can be boiled down to a simple “controversy.” Overall, this VTuber discussion ran alongside harmless chatter like everyone’s favorite Pokémon and running jokes about participants’ facial expressions on screen, all within the same thread — a reminder that this wasn’t a thread tracking one specific event, but rather the classic “Nandemo Jikkyō” (general live-commentary) style of hopping between all sorts of unrelated topics.

  • Hiroyuki Praises ‘The Promised Neverland’ — 5ch Split on the Verdict

Entrepreneur Hiroyuki (Hiroshi Nishimura) reported on his X account that he had finished reading all 20 volumes of “The Promised Neverland,” calling it a “brainy manga where the escape from the orphanage plays out like a Kaiji-style battle of wits” (Kaiji being the famous psychological gambling manga/anime), and praising its “beautiful ending that pays off a massive web of foreshadowing in a way you wouldn’t expect from a Weekly Shonen Jump series — good stuff,” giving it 4 out of 5 stars. This sparked discussion. On 5ch, while some commenters agreed with the rating itself, the conversation expanded into the long-standing split in opinion over the series’ shift toward a battle-manga direction after the orphanage escape, as well as the backstory of the heavily-criticized 2021 anime second season, which diverged sharply from the source material.

Entrepreneur Hiroshi Nishimura (Hiroyuki), 49, updated his X (formerly Twitter) account by the 17th, rating the popular manga as having a “beautiful ending.”

Hiroyuki reported: “Finished reading all 20 volumes of ‘The Promised Neverland.’ It’s a brainy manga where the escape from the orphanage plays out like a Kaiji-style battle of wits.”

He also rated it, saying: “After that it turns into more of an action series, but it wraps up by paying off a massive web of foreshadowing at the end — a beautiful ending you wouldn’t expect from a Weekly Shonen Jump series. Good stuff. ★★★★☆ 4 stars.”

I saw that kind of thing in another manga I read recently too, so if you pay attention to it you might be able to connect the dots

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

“The Promised Neverland” ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2016 and concluded after 20 volumes. It became a hit thanks to its shocking early twist — that the orphanage children were secretly being raised as food for demons — but after the escape from the orphanage, the series shifted toward a battle/action direction, and opinion on it has long been divided. The anime’s first season (2019) was generally well received, but the second season (2021), constrained by its episode count, cut and altered large portions of the source material, drawing harsh criticism from fans — a point that keeps coming up repeatedly in the thread. Commenters split between the “it’s still good after the escape” camp and the “it lost steam after the escape” camp, and that same divide shows up in the mixed reactions to Hiroyuki’s “beautiful ending” rating itself. Note that the claim circulating in the thread — that the original creator was personally involved in making the anime’s altered version worse — is stated as fact by some posters but isn’t backed by any verifiable primary source, so it should be treated with caution.

  • Public School Teachers’ Monthly Pay Hits ¥364,069 — 5ch: ‘The Broke Teacher Myth Is Just That’

News that public elementary and junior high school teachers’ monthly salary has risen to ¥364,069 — with bonus-included annual income estimated at ¥7,222,979 for high school teachers — became a hot topic on 5ch’s News Flash+ board. The thread mixed complaints like “only ¥7 million at 40 is cheap” and “you can’t live on this in Tokyo’s 23 wards” with counterarguments that, once you factor in regional allowances and household income, teachers are actually quite comfortable — and the discussion spiraled into the burdens of club-activity coaching and dealing with parents.

    (omitted)

How much are public “elementary and junior high school teachers’” monthly pay, bonuses, and annual income, roughly?

Let’s start by looking at the salaries of teachers working at public elementary and junior high schools.

There's a range on the regional allowance — in Tokyo it's roughly +¥1 million.
For a truly remote posting (like Rebun Island), it's more like +¥2 million. That fades to about half after around 3 years.

    Not even a little.
Thoroughly weeding out problem teachers (those caught in scandals/misconduct) should come first.
The reason nobody wants the job isn't the pay — it's that.

    Background and talking points

Public teacher pay runs on a single nationwide salary table, topped up with regional allowances and remote-area allowances, so actual annual income swings a lot depending on whether you’re in a city or out on a remote island or in the mountains. In the thread, reply >>17 spells out the regional gap concretely — “about +¥1 million in Tokyo, +¥2 million on a remote island” — which shows how little a single national average actually reveals.

Where opinions split was on one specific question: is this income actually fair? Some pointed to the load of club-activity coaching and parent-handling and called it “effectively unpaid,” while others argued that once you count household income, pensions, and allowances, teachers are quite well off. The remark that “the idea that teachers are poor is a myth that doesn’t match reality” reads as a direct counterpoint to those stressing just how heavy the workload is.

One thing readers can easily get wrong: the ¥7.22 million figure in the article is just a rough average — actual numbers vary a lot by age, region, and family situation. Worth being wary of letting that average take on a life of its own.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (News Flash+) thread “Public elementary and junior high school teachers’ monthly salary rose to ¥364,069. With bonuses added, the estimated annual income for high school teachers is “¥7,222,979”.”

  • FE Engage Sparks ‘Reappraisal’ Debate — 5ch: ‘If Engage Counts, Then Fates Is a Masterpiece Too’

Following claims that Fire Emblem Engage has been gaining a better reputation in the time since its release, a debate broke out on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board over whether its standing has actually improved. The thread saw comparisons to past entries like Fates and Radiant Dawn, complaints about how hard it is to get emotionally attached to the characters, the fact that not a single character made the “Hall of Fame” in the character popularity poll, and doubts about the series’ future direction given the sales drop from the previous title, Three Houses — all pointing to a reputation that’s far from settled.

This is seriously a disastrous mismatch between the game system, the story, and the characters

As for Intelligent Systems, Heroes (the mobile gacha game) has been a bad influence on them

If you're a real veteran who still plays FE, there's a doujin game out there by a certain ex-FE developer who went independent, and it's got maid characters in-game (not treated the way Fates did it) and meta-commentary type stuff — so I'd say the fandom's tolerance runs pretty deep

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Fire Emblem is known as a series where opinion tends to flip with every new release — “the previous game was better” — and posters in the thread noted that Radiant Dawn held that same position when Awakening launched, with Engage now finding itself in the same spot. Engage is said to have sold worse than its predecessor, Three Houses, though no concrete figures were given; it’s worth noting that the thread’s talk of a “reappraisal” isn’t based on sales data or aggregated review scores, but is a subjective read on shifting chatter across social media and 5ch. The fact that not a single character made the Hall of Fame in the character popularity poll was cited as backing for the claim that the characters are hard to get emotionally invested in.

    Background and Talking Points

This thread exists on the ‘Hello! Project’ board because Dau 90000 member Yoshihara Rena has a personal connection — they’re childhood friends — with a Hello! Project idol, which creates fertile ground for idol fans to live-thread even a comedians’ special. ‘King of Comedy’ is TBS’s annual autumn competition to crown Japan’s top sketch-comedy act, and this year’s edition pits the top acts chosen from 3,445 entries against each other. The split in opinion within the thread comes down to a gap between those who see the elaborately constructed bits as ‘theater-troupe-like’ or ‘unnecessary as comedy,’ and those who shrug it off as ‘the same thing every year’ — though the text doesn’t make clear which specific act each comment refers to. It’s also worth noting that, as of the posts captured in this article, there’s no mention yet of final rankings or an eventual winner; all that’s confirmed is the first act’s score, the comeback-slot score, and the fact that Spicy Garlic won the loser’s-bracket slot.

  • New Zelda Remake’s 20,000 Amazon JP Preorders Spark Worry on 5ch: “Can We Really Rely on This as One of Our Few Big Releases?”

A report posted to the “Hardware/Industry” board (nicknamed “Geha,” short for ゲームハード/game hardware — one of 5ch’s most contentious console-war boards) on 5ch, Japan’s largest anonymous forum, noted that the Switch 2 version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time — one of Nintendo’s big year-end holiday releases — has racked up around 20,000 Amazon.jp preorders combined across the standard and limited editions (with the standard edition alone at 10,000 as of October 10; “尼,” literally “nun,” is 5ch slang for Amazon, based on a shared kanji reading). Posters compared those numbers against preorders and actual sales for other titles launching around the same time, like GTA6 and Marvel’s Wolverine, and the thread split over how to read the game’s likely opening and lifetime sales given the 3DS version’s track record (160,000 in its first week, 640,000 lifetime).

Translator’s note: Posters on this board default to the username “名無しさん必死だな” (“Anonymous, getting awfully worked up”) — a long-running in-joke handle specific to this board — rendered below simply as “Anonymous.”

Going by this, clearing 20,000+ more than two weeks out would mean an extremely fast preorder pace.
Though I guess the multiplier differs anyway, since Zelda's audience isn't the same as those two.
    43AnonymousOct 17, 2026 15:36
    Re: #35
True, the multiplier could go down for that reason, but there are factors that could push it up too:
    – There's a limited-edition console bundle that gets tallied separately
    – The digital version is cheaper (download codes are counted in Famitsu's tally [Japan's main games-sales tracking publication], but pure digital-only purchases aren't — so if digital proves more popular, the multiplier based on package-only Amazon numbers would actually rise)
    38AnonymousOct 17, 2026 15:31
It's losing out to PS gift cards in the charts — why would that make anyone think PS Store digital sales are weak?
    40AnonymousOct 17, 2026 15:33
The real question for Zelda is how much it can drive console sales, the way 'Poko a Pokémon' did.
That one pulled hardware sales up quite a bit.

    65AnonymousOct 17, 2026 16:54
The ads bill it as a 'vast Hyrule,' but the actual content volume is what it is.
At best it opens around 400k and lands around 600k lifetime.
Retailers will probably stock a million units and end up with a mediocre sell-through rate, like 'Raiders' [reference unclear — likely a specific past title known for weak sell-through].

Breath of the Wild was the exception — traditionally, Zelda never had that much pull with casual players in Japan.
The Ocarina of Time remake is probably going to be a heavily front-loaded seller, like Fire Emblem or Xenoblade.

    Re: #79
I don't think it'll be that extreme, but I don't think it'll have a long tail either. There's not much to compare it to, so it's hard to say by how much.

    93AnonymousOct 17, 2026 18:59
The US hit 170,000 units in a month and a week (assuming no preorder cancellations along the way),
while Japan is at about 30,000 in roughly a month (20,000 standard, 10,000 limited) — so US preorders are doing great.

    That's not right.
The US was already over 100,000 as of September 14.
It's showing 80,000 now, so the floor is 180,000.

And Japan's 30,000 figure is missing the first week since preorders opened — so the real number is higher than that.

    Background and Points of Debate

Amazon’s preorder count is just one retailer’s figure — it excludes Rakuten, Yodobashi, and in-store preorders — so it doesn’t translate directly into first-week sales. As posters in the thread note, Famitsu’s sales tally (Japan’s primary games-sales tracking publication) covers physical copies and includes bundled download codes, but not pure digital-download sales, so the more a title leans on digital purchases, the further its tracked numbers can drift from actual demand. Comparisons to the preorder pace of past titles like the Pokémon and Rhythm Heaven games also can’t be applied one-to-one, given differences in audience and hardware install base. Where the thread split was over how much the newer, more casual audience that Breath of the Wild brought into the franchise will respond to this remake — and whether it’ll be a front-loaded seller or a slow, steady one — with some citing the 3DS version’s track record (160,000 in week one, 640,000 lifetime) to argue it could reach a million units, and others viewing the numbers so far as underwhelming for a year-end tentpole release.

In Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, a married couple mistook the bulb of “Gloriosa,” an ornamental plant growing in their own yard, for a yam, chopped it up, mixed it into okonomiyaki, and ate it — resulting in food poisoning. On the 5ch thread, posters expressed shock that anyone could mistake a plant with such flashy red flowers for a yam, while others pointed out that yam and Gloriosa bulbs can be distinguished by “whether or not they have fine root hairs” — all of which highlighted just how easily their visual similarity leads to this kind of mix-up.

    Background and Key Points

Gloriosa is a bulbous plant in the lily family, commonly grown as an ornamental in home gardens. Its bulb contains a toxic alkaloid called colchicine, and it’s known that accidental ingestion can cause poisoning symptoms such as gastrointestinal distress. It bears such a close resemblance to the tuber of the yam that accidental-ingestion incidents keep recurring — enough that institutions like the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Public Health have set up dedicated warning pages about it. The identifying feature raised in the thread — “whether or not it has fine root hairs” — is in fact one of the distinguishing methods cited by specialist institutions, and it underscores the risks of foraging and cooking based on amateur judgment in settings where ornamental and edible plants grow side by side in the same garden. The report in question does not disclose the severity or course of the couple’s symptoms.

On 5ch’s live thread, comments questioning manager Kyuji Fujikawa’s bullpen call piled up — “They could’ve just left Kudo in,” “Fujikawa got cocky and it blew up in everyone’s face” — splitting opinion over whether the move was justified. The same night, Osaka was hosting the Yodogawa Fireworks Festival, and the thread also buzzed with reports of Hanshin fans leaving their seats mid-game and the crowded scramble home from Koshien Stadium.

    Cut it out, you jerk!!

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Behind the debate over Hanshin’s bullpen management lies the sense that the closer had recently looked shaky, which split the thread’s opinion over whether the timing of pulling starter Kudo was the right call. Behind comments like “they could’ve just left Kudo in” lies the fact that his pitch count was already climbing — making it hard to flatly condemn the decision to switch pitchers in the first place. On the other hand, the line about “dragging Doris out of the trash heap” reflects just how little trust remained in the closer. There’s also a mention of Sato’s “final at-bat in Japan,” hinting that the game may have involved a player nearing retirement or the end of his contract, though the thread alone doesn’t confirm the details. The same night, Osaka’s Yodogawa Fireworks Festival was underway, and the chatter about the crowded trip home from Koshien is the kind of detail only a live, on-the-ground thread would capture.

  • Nintendo Stock Keeps Climbing Despite Soaring Chip Prices — 5ch Users Debate Why

A discussion heated up on 5ch’s “Hardware/Industry” board (nicknamed “Geha”) over why Nintendo’s stock keeps rising. The thread’s original poster pointed to worrying factors like the weak yen, Japan’s declining birthrate, and soaring semiconductor prices, but other posters countered that the stock is “rallying in the opposite direction of the semiconductor sector,” and argued that even as AI makes it easier to churn out copycat games, Nintendo’s deep well of in-house IP makes it resilient. Others remained pessimistic about the company’s future, citing the shrinking birthrate and a constantly turning-over customer base, and the thread spun off into comparisons with other companies’ IP sales (like Gundam) and debates over Studio Ghibli’s business management — without ever reaching a consensus.

    Somebody explain this to me
    Weak yen
    Declining birthrate
    5AnonymousOct 17, 2026 16:03
It's rallying against the semiconductor sector, probably? Dunno though

Is it really plausible that AI chip demand just vanishes?
Like everyone suddenly stops using ChatGPT and Gemini overnight,
investment in self-driving cars and robots dries up,
and we just snap back to a pre-AI world like nothing happened?
If anything we're still at the very beginning of the AI revolution
and if home consoles already smell this "washed up" at the starting line, that just screams a bleak future to me

From your perspective the stuff listed in Re: #1 looks like bad news, but the market and investors just see it differently, that's all
    16AnonymousOct 17, 2026 16:14
    Re: #6
If AI makes it easier to clone games themselves, then IP that can't be cloned becomes the valuable thing
and Nintendo, which is sitting on a mountain of that, gets seen as having a strong future, maybe?
Plus Ocarina of Time's remake is coming, then a movie after that, so the Zelda IP looks set to stay hot
    10AnonymousOct 17, 2026 16:08
Wasn't it like ¥90,000 before the stock split?
    28AnonymousOct 17, 2026 16:22

Before the split it was more like ¥50,000
    17AnonymousOct 17, 2026 16:14
Plain and simple, the companies hurt most by rising chip prices are the ones making game hardware
Software-only companies might manage to survive
but even then, in an era of fewer kids, an aging population, and Japanese people getting poorer,
Nintendo — skewed toward kids and the domestic Japanese market — has to be the worst of the worst off
Even the Switch got a launch boost from 3D Mario and 3D Zelda early in its hardware life
and this time there isn't even that boost
This year's boost is going to PS5 and Xbox, riding on GTA6
and even that's basically the games industry's last fireworks show
it's plain to see PS6 is going to have it even harder than the Switch 2
    24AnonymousOct 17, 2026 16:19
    Re: #17
Yeah, PS6 is definitely going to have a rough time, I'll give you that
but the rest is off the mark…
Well, if you really believe that, why not go buy some AI or memory stocks?
They're supposedly inversely correlated, so they should go up

By the way, Kioxia, which was flying high not long ago, is still in free fall
    22AnonymousOct 17, 2026 16:17
That thing called "Astra" was wild — auto-generating indie-level games — but OpenAI itself is on record saying it'll keep posting tens of trillions of yen in losses going forward

    Re: #22
Even if they can't earn it back, they can't stop now

    27AnonymousOct 17, 2026 16:22
    Re: #16
That theory sounds fishy too, honestly
Ghibli-style AI art went viral on X
but Ghibli itself hasn't made a dime off it
if anything they're in such a slump they can barely put out a decent new film anymore
AI is churning out photorealistic gravure idol videos too
but the real-life gravure idols aren't benefiting from that at all — if anything demand for them looks set to keep shrinking

Still, Ghibli and the gravure idols might have it easy since they just slowly fade out
Console makers have to keep their foot on the gas until they've locked in a critical mass of users
being stuck dragging out hardware that isn't selling, unable to just fade away, that's the most painful spot to be in
    32AnonymousOct 17, 2026 16:25
    Re: #27
IP isn't the same thing as an art style, so your comparison's off
explaining that from scratch is kind of a hassle though

    Re: #27
This has nothing to do with AI at all — Ghibli's artisan mentality has always gotten in the way of the business side, they've been terrible at it from the start
Granted, the rise of AI doujin stuff hasn't made it any better either
but either way, it's just not a good example to use
    37AnonymousOct 17, 2026 16:31
    Re: #33
Simply put, AI lets you mass-produce knockoff games
People are already making a huge fuss over Palworld, just one small indie outfit
but if China builds endless AI data centers, they could crank out knockoffs at 10,000x or even 100,000,000x Palworld's output
Looked at that way, just owning IP doesn't guarantee safety
if anything, like Ghibli or the gravure idols, you've got a rough future ahead unless you play your cards really well
    47AnonymousOct 17, 2026 16:40
    Re: #37
Hmm… I bet China and that crowd are dreaming of exactly that
same with countries that can't produce their own IP, or the Hollywood camp that resents Japan's anime boom
but even if a flood of junk mass-produced IP gets born out of this, all it does is dump more garbage into storefronts that are already a dumping ground thanks to indies
    40AnonymousOct 17, 2026 16:34

Saying Ghibli is 'playing it smart' is already off base
that studio is the textbook definition of bad at navigating business
even an all-time classic like Laputa was a box office flop in theaters
they disband the production team after every single film, so none of the know-how ever accumulates — it just leaks out every time
in later years it's basically just been 'let Miyazaki make whatever he feels like,' with zero regard for the company's survival or profits
    56AnonymousOct 17, 2026 16:51
    Re: #52
    That's not it
Ghibli and the gravure idols were grouped together as 'cases where you're in trouble unless you play it smart'
not as examples of a successful 'playing it smart'
    57AnonymousOct 17, 2026 16:53
Precisely because they ARE playing it smart, they're not stuck living or dying on a single film the way Ghibli does — they diversify and leverage the content across multiple angles
    60AnonymousOct 17, 2026 16:54
    Re: #57
Same goes for Bandai Namco — they actually cultivate their IP properly, I think they're genuinely doing it right
    70AnonymousOct 17, 2026 17:01
The Dragon Quest brand used to be treated like something sacred too,
but the landscape can completely flip in about five years
consumers just don't place that much weight on brand loyalty
Maybe it's different for physical luxury goods that keep their value, like Hermès or Rolex…
but say a free PC knockoff of Kirby Air Ride comes out with 1,000x the content volume, people will flock to that instead
Sure, the middle-aged guys who grew up playing the original Air Ride as kids probably won't jump ship
but the thing is, those guys eventually graduate from gaming altogether, and Nintendo's defining trait is that its customer base keeps churning over
They're strong on IP and brand, but it's their fate to keep shedding the very customers who were attached to that IP and brand

Even so, Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D still sold well. Its popularity hasn't faded at all
The only thing that's faded is Square Enix's management and Horii
Indie and small-studio games made with stuff like RPG Maker have been around forever, long before any of this AI trend
you're just cherry-picking that to arm your own argument
    78AnonymousOct 17, 2026 17:10
AI companies' earnings are good, but that's already priced in and there's no more good news left to come
if anything people are now talking about AI regulation and AI not being profitable
Nintendo's stock looking like it should rise but not quite rising, isn't that simply because its software lineup is weak?
Investors want another Breath of the Wild-caliber title, but that's setting the bar way too high

The stock dips every single time there's a Nintendo Direct, any real gamer knows stock price doesn't mean much

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The discussion rests on a backdrop where demand from AI data centers has driven up prices of memory and other semiconductors, squeezing the cost of building game console hardware. Within the thread, posters cited different figures for Nintendo’s pre-split stock price — “around ¥90,000” (post 10) and “around ¥50,000” (post 28) — and this article cannot confirm which is accurate. Opinion split mainly over whether a rise in AI-made copycat games is a tailwind or a headwind for an in-house-IP company like Nintendo: one camp argued that owning IP guarantees safety, while the other pointed to Ghibli and mass-produced AI IP as proof that “it all comes down to how well you play your cards.” It’s also worth noting, for readers less familiar with investing, that a stock’s rise or fall doesn’t always track neatly with a company’s actual earnings or user numbers.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry, “Geha”) thread “Why Is Nintendo’s Stock Price Shooting Up So Abnormally.”
