  • Study: Correcting Vaccine Conspiracy Believers With Facts Barely Works

A study by Rissho University and others has found that people who believe conspiracy theories about the COVID-19 vaccine — such as claims that it contains microchips — tend to distrust newspapers and television, and rarely change their minds even when given accurate information. The findings, published in a journal from the Nature group, raise questions about how to communicate information ahead of the next pandemic, and the topic caught fire on 5ch’s News Speed+ board. While the thread filled up with jokes mocking the microchip theory, it also saw genuinely heated clashes between anti-vaxxers and pro-vaccine posters — playing out, almost too perfectly, the very “deep-rooted conflict” the study describes.

    Science and Society

A study by Rissho University and other institutions has revealed that people who believe conspiracy theories about the COVID-19 vaccine — such as “the vaccine has a microchip embedded in it” or “the government and pharmaceutical companies are hiding information” — have strong distrust of mass media like newspapers and TV, and that giving them accurate information does little to correct their beliefs. This undercuts the common view that conspiracy theories just need “proper public messaging” to fix — a claim the research shows has no scientific backing. The findings suggest that how we communicate information will need to be rethought ahead of future pandemics.

    Background and Talking Points

This study, published by a team from Rissho University and others in a journal from the Nature group, found that the more strongly someone believes in conspiracy theories, the more distrustful they are of mass media — and that “proper public messaging” alone does little to change their minds. The thread ended up ironically demonstrating this very finding: jokes mocking the microchip theory drew plenty of reactions, while exchanges between anti-vaccine and pro-vaccine posters over the history of drug-induced harm and the fairness of dose counts and costs mostly talked past each other, with both sides leaning on claims short on evidence. The pattern the study points to — that simply delivering correct information doesn’t change minds — plays out almost exactly in this thread’s exchanges. Note that this article excludes posts that name real politicians or parties to stoke conflict, attack individuals, or spread unsubstantiated charts and conspiracy theories.

  • Australian athlete wets herself mid-competition but keeps racing anyway — “go all in or don’t bother” — organizers slammed

At a fitness competition held in Beijing, China, Australian athlete Joanna became a topic of conversation after she wet herself mid-race and kept running all the way to the finish. She later posted a photo of herself receiving IV treatment on Instagram, commenting, “If you’re going to do it, give it everything you’ve got” — but criticism has been mounting against the event organizers for not stopping the competition. On 5channel, threads split between users worried about the hygiene and safety impact on other competitors and those praising her grit, with several posts drawing comparisons to similar incidents in past racewalking events and women’s marathons.

    Re: #133
Wasn't that the one where TV commentator Akemi Masuda made a big fuss going "it's her period, it's her period"?

Background and key points of this story

Losing control of bodily functions due to fatigue or stress during endurance events isn’t actually all that rare. In racewalking and ultra-distance running, there have been multiple past reports of athletes wetting or soiling themselves mid-race — even with portable toilets on course — simply because they couldn’t make it in time. The examples raised in the thread, like the “1984 LA Olympics women’s marathon runner” or various racewalkers, include cases with different underlying causes, such as heat-related dizziness or dehydration, so it’s worth being careful not to lump all these symptoms together as the same thing. It’s also unclear from the original article whether the event had an explicit rule classifying this kind of situation as grounds for disqualification. The real core of the criticism directed at the organizers isn’t so much about “whether it was right to let her continue by her own choice,” but rather the ambiguity in the organizers’ standards for how far they had defined the hygiene and safety impact on other competitors.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5channel (Entertainment/Sports News+) thread “Her shorts were soaked between the legs… Australian female athlete who wet herself but kept competing anyway says “If you’re going to do it, give it everything” and “Well, a win’s a win” — organizers hit with a wave of criticism.”

  • What Is a ‘Dopamine Brat’? SNS Addiction and the Vanishing Tolerance for Boredom

An article distributed by ITmedia Mobile introduced the coined term “dopa-gaki” (dopamine brat), describing a state of being unable to step away from social media and short-form videos for even a moment. Short for “dopamine-addicted brat,” the term is said to capture the psychology of losing tolerance for boredom. On 5channel, threads saw a wave of pushback against the term itself, along with comments suggesting the same tendency isn’t limited to children but applies to adults and the TV generation too. Some posters linked declining sales of gum and cigarettes to the spread of smartphones, turning the discussion into one about how, across generations, the way people “kill time” has changed.

“Can’t stand even a moment of boredom” — What is the SNS-addicted “dopa-gaki”? The psychology behind it, and how things stand outside Japan (page 1/3) – ITmedia Mobile

Published September 15, 2026, 08:00 AM [Tomoko Suzuki, ITmedia]

Lately, you may have seen the term “dopa-gaki” floating around social media. It’s a coined term short for “a brat addicted to dopamine (a brain chemical),” used as slang for someone who can’t tolerate even a moment of boredom and constantly craves intense stimulation from music, short-form videos, livestreams, and social media.

I don't feel that way — you need vocabulary that can properly describe a state.
There was a Frenchman who was blown away by the Japanese concept of "chinposi" (the position of one's junk in one's pants).
Of course Frenchmen also feel discomfort about their junk's position.
But there was no word for it. He said "chinposi" was the perfect term to describe that uncomfortable feeling he'd always had.

What creeps me out is replacing a word that already exists with another word that already exists.
Fashion terms like "spats" vs "leggings" are like that.
What actually annoys me is when a word borrowed to describe a concept with no other way of being said (or that would take a wordy explanation) gets used instead in place of a perfectly plain existing word.
Like calling mere "setting" a "worldview."
Or using a meme about something whose essence never changes as if it were a fresh local buzzword.
Or treating a phrase everyone's just recycling as if it were some profound proverb or maxim.

“Dopa-gaki” is slang short for “dopamine addict” — not a medical diagnosis, but an internet term that has recently come into use to describe a tendency toward dependence on social media and short-form video. The original ITmedia Mobile article itself frames this state as something not limited to children and applicable to adults as well, and the thread likewise saw plenty of comments noting it cuts across age groups. Where opinion split was over how to judge this kind of “X-gaki” neologism itself: some welcomed it as useful vocabulary that accurately captures a real state, while others found it distasteful, seeing it as either a stigmatizing label or a kind of cringeworthy self-diagnosis. There were also posts linking the decline in gum and cigarette sales to the spread of smartphones, but it’s worth noting this is speculation from 5channel users rather than a causal relationship backed by the article or official statistics.

*This article is an excerpt and summary based on the 5channel (Breaking News+) thread “‘Can’t stand even a moment of boredom’ — What is the SNS-addicted ‘dopa-gaki’? The psychology behind it, and how things stand outside Japan.”

  • After being told to quiet her noisy kid, mom claps back: ‘Isn’t Saizeriya that kind of restaurant?’ — thread splits down the middle

When a fellow customer complained that her kids were being noisy at Saizeriya, a “mom-sama” (a sarcastic 5ch term, “ko-mochi-sama,” used to mock parents seen as entitled) shot back with “Isn’t Saizeriya that kind of restaurant?” — and the exchange blew up on 5ch. Even though it’s marketed as a family-friendly chain, opinions differ on just how much noise should be tolerated there, and the thread saw “badly-disciplined parents are the real problem” clash with “a bit of noise is just part of the deal.” The discussion spread beyond a simple kids-vs-adults fight, touching on the fact that Saizeriya doesn’t even have a kids’ menu, and on the manners of childless customers too.

    Background and points of contention

Saizeriya is known as a budget Italian chain that’s easy for parents with kids to use, but it has never officially billed itself as “kid-friendly,” so how people read that varies by customer. Where the thread split was over how much of a nuisance should be tolerated — some said it’s only natural to call out kids running around or throwing cups, while others felt a bit of noise was within acceptable range. Some also pointed out how uncomfortable it feels to see a disruptive kid relabeled as simply “energetic,” highlighting a temperature gap between parents and non-parents. The fact that Saizeriya doesn’t actually have a kids’ set menu also came up, adding to the mismatch between the chain’s real offerings and its “family-friendly” image.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “[Sad news] “Mom-sama”: “A fellow customer at Saizeriya told me my kid was being noisy, but isn’t Saizeriya that kind of restaurant?”.”

  • “Still Stan-Worthy as a Mom” Ranking of Ex-AKB48 Members: Who Overtook Tomomi Itano for the Top Spot?

A thread went up on 5ch’s Geinou/Sports Express+ board introducing a ranking of “ex-AKB48 members you can still stan even as a mom.” Billed as an in-house survey of 100 mothers in their 20s to 40s, the list included names like Tomomi Itano, Mariko Shinoda, and Tomomi Kasai — but commenters quickly questioned the tiny sample size and the murky criteria behind the picks. The thread filled up with people listing former members who now have kids, and also lit up with chatter about the personal lives of Yuko Oshima and Yuki Kashiwagi.

Ex-AKB48 member Tomomi Itano is at the center of controversy on social media over a YouTube filming session at a luxury hotel.

It started with a family trip video to Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, that Itano posted to her YouTube channel on September 3, which included a scene of her drying her daughter’s hair in the changing area of the Ritz-Carlton Nikko.

Given the sensitivity of the location, criticism poured in over the lack of consideration, prompting Itano to explain on social media that “we filmed with special permission.”

Background and Key Points of This Topic

AKB48 was formed in 2005 and peaked in popularity in the early 2010s; many of the core members from that era are now in their 30s and have gone on to marry and have children. The “in-house research” that sparked this discussion was a small-scale survey of just 100 respondents, without the statistical backing of a major media opinion poll. The debate in the thread centered mainly on the survey’s credibility, with comments like “the sample size is way too small” and “the basis for the ranking is unclear” standing out — while at the same time a separate trend emerged of users listing former members who now have children. Note that the thread also contained posts about certain members’ personal lives and relationships that could not be verified, which have been excluded from this article due to their unconfirmed nature.

※This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary of the 5ch (Geinou/Sports Express+) thread ““Ex-AKB48 You Can Still Stan Even as a Mom” Ranking: Who Is the “Scandal-Prone” Comeback Mom Who Beat Out Tomomi Itano? [Full Rankings].”

On September 15, Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare announced that the number of centenarians nationwide reached 107,677 (up 7,914 from the previous year) as of the 1st of this month, topping 100,000 for the first time since record-keeping began in 1963. Women accounted for nearly 90% of the total at 94,298, and the oldest person is a 114-year-old resident of Kyoto. This marks the 56th consecutive year the record has been broken, and the figures are part of an annual survey released ahead of Respect for the Aged Day on the 21st. On 5channel threads, discussion ranged from worries over pension finances, to comparisons with the era of Kin-san and Gin-san when living past 100 was still rare, to debates over why women tend to live longer.

Centenarians top 100,000 for the first time… nearly 90% women, oldest is a 114-year-old in Kyoto: Yomiuri Shimbun

It was revealed on the 15th that the number of centenarians nationwide reached 107,677 (up 7,914 from the previous year) as of the 1st of this month, topping 100,000 for the first time since the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare began compiling the data. This marks the 56th consecutive year the record has been broken. Women made up nearly 90% at 94,298, while men numbered 13,379.

The ministry compiles this data every year ahead of Respect for the Aged Day (the 21st). Thanks to advances in medical care and rising health awareness, the number of centenarians has kept climbing. In 1963, when record-keeping began, there were only 153; the figure passed 50,000 in 2012 and has continued to grow since.

People in their 80s and up are the generation that actually knew hunger,
and also lived through an era when women drinking or smoking was simply unthinkable.

Those two factors are why Japanese women live so extraordinarily long.
Starting with today's 70-somethings, average lifespan is going to drop sharply.
In fact, people in their 70s are already dying off left and right.
They lived through the wildest era for drinking and smoking, and a lot of those habits are still with them.

    Re: #20
That's got nothing to do with it.
It's because women back then mostly didn't work and had it easy.
Overseas, women actually go out and work too, so there's barely any gender gap in lifespan there.
The fact that Japan has the world's biggest male-female lifespan gap is actually the weird part.

Human lifespan basically comes down to the limit on how many times your cells can divide.
Get injured or sick, and you burn through more of those divisions, which shortens your life.
People who live long are generally just the lucky ones born to a life free of injury and illness.

Background and Key Points of This Story

This latest milestone of topping 100,000 centenarians is the product of an accelerating trend: from just 153 centenarians when record-keeping began in 1963, to 50,000 in 2012, to 100,000 now — part of the annual announcement made ahead of Respect for the Aged Day. In the thread, commenters brought up Kin-san and Gin-san (Kin Narita and Gin Kanie), the twin centenarians who became famous in the 1990s, noting that centenarians were far rarer back then than they are today. As for why women make up 90% of the total, opinions split between social factors — like wartime and postwar food shortages and differing smoking and drinking habits — and physiological factors like female hormones, without settling on a single answer. There were plenty of worries about the burden on pensions and elder care, but the thread also brought up the theory that human lifespan tops out around 120, so the discussion didn’t end on pure optimism.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5channel (News Speed+) thread “Centenarians top 100,000 for the first time… nearly 90% women, oldest is a 114-year-old in Kyoto.”

  • Hello! Project’s Power Map Has Totally Transformed in 10 Years — 5ch: ‘Doesn’t Even Add Up to One JYP’

A comparison image titled “Idol power map — how much it’s changed in 10 years” that circulated on X (formerly Twitter) became a hot topic on 5ch’s Hello! Project board (morningcoffee). It shows how the standing of each group within Hello! Project has shifted between 10 years ago and now, with attention centering on Morning Musume’s fading presence and Juice=Juice’s rise. The thread saw comments pointing out that the whole Hello! Project lineup “doesn’t even add up to one JYP,” along with users sharing that a TV Asahi music special had introduced Juice=Juice as a “powerhouse vocal group” — sparking a split of opinion over whether the power map itself even holds up.

    Background and Talking Points

The “power map” image was made by an individual user on X, not data released by 5ch’s administrators or any official source. Hello! Project runs multiple groups (Morning Musume, Juice=Juice, ANGERME, and others), and the thread buzzed over two things: °C-ute — the group that was the mainstay 10 years ago — being left off the chart, and the fact that Juice=Juice, centered on its current members, was introduced as a “powerhouse vocal group” on a TV Asahi music special (aired June 24, 2026). Meanwhile, questions were raised about AKB48’s actual drawing power based on venue seating, though factors like differences in e-ticket issuing methods make a simple comparison hard to judge accurately. Opinions in the thread split over whether to treat this kind of “power map” as just one person’s subjective creation, or as something close to genuine public sentiment — no consensus was reached. A temperature gap between longtime fans and supporters of the current lineups also seems to underlie the debate.

  • Should Tokyo Commuters Buy a 1LDK? 5ch Debates: “Buying Time Is Worth It”

A thread went up on 5ch about a woman — an office worker in Tokyo whom the poster met through a matchmaking app — who took out a mortgage and bought a 1LDK (one-bedroom plus living/dining/kitchen) condo in the city. Her reasons: she wanted to move out of her cramped apartment and finally own her own home. Reactions were largely positive, with comments like “If you can afford it, there’s no reason not to buy” and “Buying time is worth it,” but plenty of others voiced concerns about the future of Tokyo’s property market, rising mortgage rates, and the fact that single-occupant units are generally seen as poor investments. Posters who actually own real estate chipped in with concrete accounts of how their purchase prices compared to current valuations.

Tokyo condos only go up, never down, right?
Which means, conversely, they're better value than renting

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Since the Bank of Japan ended its negative interest rate policy in March 2024, it has raised rates several times, putting upward pressure on the variable mortgage rates that had stayed low for so long. That’s the backdrop behind the thread’s worries about rising interest rates. Meanwhile, “buy vs. rent” is a perennial debate topic on 5ch, and this thread was no exception, splitting between posters sharing stories of rising property values and those urging caution, warning that “population decline will lead to an oversupply of housing.” One point that’s easy to miss just from the thread itself is that central Tokyo condo prices are also propped up by demand from single people and dual-income households, meaning they may move according to a different supply-and-demand structure than the nationwide population decline would suggest.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “Is it worth buying a nearby 1LDK condo to work in Tokyo?“

  • Tsunku♂: “Morning Musume’s skills need work — raise them to Juice=Juice’s level”

Tsunku♂, former general producer of Hello! Project, remarked that while Morning Musume enjoys high visibility thanks to its legendary run of hit songs, the current members’ singing and dancing skills leave something to be desired — and that the group should be brought up to the level of fellow Hello! Project act Juice=Juice. The comments drew attention on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. In the thread, some questioned how much say Tsunku actually still has over member selection and personnel decisions these days, while others pointed to inadequate training for the 18th-generation members. Still others pushed back, arguing that skill isn’t necessarily what idols need, leaving opinion divided.

You'd do better to look at successful idols from other agencies — otaku don't actually want skill. A lot of idol otaku are themselves socially disadvantaged, so they go for immature, fragile-looking girls — the submissive type who seems like she'll do whatever you say. (Juice=Juice getting attention is a pretty exceptional case.)

I do think they could use a couple more members who can really sing. That said, the choreography overall is so intense that it looks tough to sing through. When other groups cover Morning Musume songs, unless you're at the level of Dambara, Nishida, or Kawanishi, people tend to struggle pretty badly.

If Fukumura, Ikuta, and Ishida had graduated instead of sticking around, the generational handover would have gone smoothly and it wouldn't have come to this.

New member additions probably just get sprung on the manager out of nowhere too. At the very least, give Tsunku a proper heads-up in advance.

Back in the ASAYAN days, the golden-era members were basically hand-picked additions chosen directly by Tsunku, right? Like the Chinese members Junjun and Linlin. "Mitsui, come on down. Fukumura, come on down." I can't see it any other way — Tsunku was personally selecting members at least up through that era. Isn't it more that his authority over personnel dropped to zero once he stepped down as general producer?

These days he just provides the songs, right? Maybe he throws in a bit of input on the choreography for those songs, at most.

    Re: #105
Apparently it was originally run as a selection committee, though of course his word could still override everyone else's. I'd guess it dropped to zero involvement once he was advised to take a break for his health.
    111AnonymousSep 15, 2026 13:52
Momusu has more skill than the Sakamichi groups or Kawa Lab. But the Sakamichi groups and Kawa Lab outsell Momusu anyway. The problem is the songs and how they're marketed. As for Juice=Juice, it's simply that Aoi Yamazaki's songs are good. Tsunku's more difficult songs just don't tend to go viral.

    Re: #111
Isn't it just that Morning Musume's skill is so lacking that the songs look hard by comparison?

Background and key points of this discussion

Tsunku♂ held the position of Hello! Project’s general producer around 2004, but stepped back from that authority after his health declined, and is now said to be involved mainly in providing songs. This history is why the thread debated whether he still has any say over personnel matters. Juice=Juice gets held up as a vocally strong group partly because members like Yamato Dambara are highly regarded even within the industry. Meanwhile, Morning Musume’s 18th-generation intake marked an unusual generational shift in that every new member is in their early teens, and the underlying frustration is that the hoped-for “ace who can really sing” never materialized among them. There was also an argument that otaku want a sense of protectiveness more than technical skill — but that’s a generalization about the idol market, and it’s worth separating from any judgment of Tsunku’s remarks themselves.

*This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary of the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “Tsunku♂: “Morning Musume has a legacy of hit songs that keeps it in the spotlight, but the current lineup’s skills need work. Raise them to Juice=Juice’s level”.”

  • Report: Sweet Baby Inc. Allegedly Involved in PS5’s ‘Wolverine,’ X-Men Name Reportedly Getting Changed

Reports that narrative consultancy Sweet Baby Inc. is involved in Sony/Insomniac Games’ PS5-exclusive ‘Marvel’s Wolverine’ have sparked discussion on 5ch’s “Hardware/Industry (Geha)” board. According to the reports, the in-game “X-Men” will be rebranded as “Team X,” dropping the word “Men,” and posters noted that the news has fueled backlash on overseas forums. Thread commenters were split on why companies keep signing with Sweet Baby Inc. despite the known backlash — some pointed to funding pressures or reputation management, while others dismissed it as exaggeration from critics.

Even the die-hard Sony fanboys ("Goki," a derogatory nickname for PlayStation loyalists) were pushing back when this broke — there's the Spider-Man 2 precedent too.
"Insomniac is dropping the word 'Men' from the X-Men name in its upcoming Wolverine game, rebranding the iconic mutants as Team X.
Sweet Baby Inc. is reported to be involved with this game.

According to Insomniac Games creative director Marcus Smith, there are no X-Men in the world of the upcoming Marvel's Wolverine.
Instead, players will encounter a group of mutants called Team X.
The announcement has drawn immediate online backlash, especially given reports that narrative consulting firm Sweet Baby Inc. is involved in the project."

If you're churning out garbage while calling it AAA, then the whole AAA business model is just broken.
Same goes for cinematic-style games — what worked 20 years ago doesn't necessarily fly today.

Is this Sweet Whatever-Inc. like the old-school "sokaiya" (corporate extortionists who used to disrupt shareholder meetings) — do they make trouble for your business if you don't sign with them?
    107AnonymousSep 15, 2026 14:18
    Re: #46
They used to, but after trying the same move on a Chinese manufacturer and getting hit with public pushback that exposed them,
it looks like now they only deal with companies that fall in line quietly.
    53AnonymousSep 15, 2026 13:59
They're clearly hated to death online, and both the developers and Sweet Baby Inc. itself surely know it — so how do they justify it to themselves?
Genuinely curious about that thought process.

Once you've got money, the next thing you want is prestige.
In America, pushing political correctness is an easy shortcut to earning that prestige.
That's the mechanism behind why big, top-down companies gravitate toward it.

If political correctness tanks sales and sinks the company, I'd think that'd leave a black mark on their résumé though.

Why do they even need to sponsor this stuff?

Some kind of cushy post-retirement landing spot?

They've half sold their souls at this point.
Maybe in return, [Sweet Baby Inc.] leans on mid-tier outlets to help pump up the Metascore or something.
But even the big publishers seem to be getting sick of political correctness now — good sign.
Games don't need any of that.

Spider-Man already went all-in with an unapologetically Black Spider-Man in Miles Morales.

    Re: #77
I'm asking this seriously though —
you really think Sweet Baby Inc. is out there calling people "pigs"?
A company that reaches into culture well beyond just games?
    97AnonymousSep 15, 2026 14:14
I really don't get why they'd get involved even at the cost of sales.
    106AnonymousSep 15, 2026 14:18
    Re: #97
It's a mindset Japanese people don't really share, but if you don't show "consideration," political-correctness groups will tear you to shreds.
So they pay Sweet Baby Inc. a ton of money for "consulting" (lol) just to get their stamp of approval, basically.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Since around 2023, Sweet Baby Inc. has been a divisive presence in the overseas game industry as a firm offering “politically correct”-style narrative consulting. Titles reported to involve the company tend to draw concentrated criticism, and this Wolverine story is an extension of that pattern. That said, it’s worth noting that the cited source, geeksandgamers.com, leans toward industry-critical commentary and is not an official statement from Sony or Insomniac. In the thread, theories about why a company would sign on despite risking a sales hit — ranging from funding needs to investor pressure to score-boosting tactics — were floated, but none of them are confirmed by the parties involved. At the same time, casting Black superheroes has a long history of its own, from Falcon (1969) to Miles Morales (2011), and the article doesn’t make clear that diverse casting itself is a separate issue from the criticism of this particular consulting involvement.
