  • Tokai Onair’s economic impact on Okazaki City: ¥36.91 billion over 10 years

Tokai Onair, a YouTuber group under UUUM based in Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture, has had its economic impact on the city estimated at ¥36.91 billion over 10 years, based on a survey conducted in April and May 2026. Member Tetsuya reacted, “That’s an incredibly incredible number!” On 5ch’s Geinou/Sports News+ thread, many commenters questioned the calculation method itself, pointing out the shakiness of estimates based on input-output tables and the failure to separate this figure from the tourism boost from the NHK taiga drama “Dōsuru Ieyasu” (What Will You Do, Ieyasu?) — while others noted that local restaurants really do see lines of visitors from outside the prefecture.

Survey period: April 3–7, May 11–29

There's a lot of pilgrimage tourism,

Matsujun visited Okazaki on Tsurube's walking-tour show to help promote the taiga drama, but the young people there were only there for the Tokai Onair pilgrimage spots and gave him the cold shoulder — he looked pretty hurt about it.

"Many fans visit our city on pilgrimages, and we've even seen young people move here or take jobs here because of them —
our city's contribution is so remarkable that a figure like ¥36.91 billion doesn't even come as a surprise."

Background and key points of this discussion

An “economic ripple effect” is an estimate that municipalities and events typically produce through commissioned studies, using an input-output table to add a chain of related transactions (indirect effects) on top of the direct effect. As pointed out in the thread, such figures tend to come out inflated because they can’t cleanly exclude substitution effects (spending simply shifted from elsewhere) or overlap with pre-existing tourism demand — a point economists have long criticized. The economic-impact estimates published by Professor Katsuhiro Miyamoto (formerly of Kindai University) for various booms are especially famous, and online they’re often treated as something of a running joke. Tokai Onair is one of Japan’s biggest YouTuber groups, formed in Okazaki City in 2013, notable for the fact that its members have stayed based in their hometown rather than relocating to Tokyo. This survey period also overlapped with tourism driven by the NHK taiga drama “Dōsuru Ieyasu” (What Will You Do, Ieyasu?), making it difficult to cleanly separate the two effects.

  • Kids Now Online 10+ Hours a Day, Experts Warn — While Other Countries Push SNS Age Limits, Japan Stays Cautious; 5ch Says ‘We Used to Play Games 20 Hours a Day Too’

A report claiming that children’s internet use has hit ’10+ hours a day’ and is ‘ruining their lives’ sparked a heated debate on 5ch’s News Express+ board over whether such long usage is actually a problem. According to a 2025 survey cited in the article, elementary schoolers now spend an average of about 4 hours online, while high schoolers exceed 6.5 hours — and while other countries are moving to impose age limits on social media, Japan remains largely hesitant to do the same. The thread saw a clash between defenders arguing that ‘kids in the Showa era also spent hours glued to TV and games’ and critics warning that ’10+ hours is abnormal for a kid who still has to go to school,’ with plenty of posts also veering into the loneliness and internet dependence of elderly users.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

According to the article, as of 2025 children’s daily internet use averages about 4 hours for elementary schoolers and exceeds 6.5 hours for high schoolers, and while other countries are moving to impose age limits on social media use, negative attitudes toward regulation remain entrenched in Japan. What split opinion in the thread was how to judge these usage figures. Some defended it, arguing that ‘kids in the Showa era were just as absorbed in TV and games,’ while others pointed out that back then such media sparked conversations with friends, whereas smartphone content differs from person to person and rarely creates that same shared experience. It’s worth noting that posts flatly labeling long usage ‘abnormal’ or ‘sick’ ended up tying the discussion to the loneliness and internet dependence of elderly users, pulling the conversation away from the original topic of children.

  • Is AQUOS Still Popular? 5ch Debates What Phones Young Japanese Are Actually Using

In a freewheeling 5ch chat thread, smartphone choices among teens and twentysomethings became the topic of the day. A comment saying “huh, AQUOS is actually popular” kicked off a wide-ranging discussion covering iPhone’s dominance, where Galaxy, Pixel, and Xperia each stand, and even foldable-phone stock shortages. The liveliest debate was over pricing — posters were stunned that the supposedly budget-friendly AQUOS now runs 60,000 yen, and frustration ran high over the Xperia 10’s high price relative to its specs. Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Japan’s smartphone market has long been dominated by iPhone, its presence strong enough that one poster in the thread claimed “half of all Japanese people carry an iPhone.” AQUOS, meanwhile, still enjoys solid support — partly thanks to its image as a domestic Japanese brand — and its heavy presence on the secondhand market also became a talking point. Where opinions split this time was over pricing: posters repeatedly pointed out that supposedly budget-tier models are actually creeping into the tens of thousands of yen, and voiced frustration over new releases priced well above what their specs justify. It’s also clear that models like Galaxy and Xperia, which limit their sales volume, are chosen for entirely different reasons than something like Pixel, which draws fans mainly for how easy it is to install custom ROMs on it. Rather than a simple matter of ‘popular vs. unpopular,’ it’s the differences in pricing strategy and brand image shaping people’s phone choices that don’t come through in the headline alone.

  • ‘Lollipop Chainsaw 2 Back2Back’ Announced — 5ch Asks: ‘Is There Even a Point Without Suda?’

Following the success of “Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP,” a brand-new entry in the series, “LOLLIPOP CHAINSAW 2 Back2Back,” has been revealed via announcements from the PlayStation Blog and Famitsu. The game has been announced for PS5, but the thread immediately zeroed in on the fact that series creator Goichi Suda is not involved in this installment. Comments like “A Suda game isn’t about the title — Suda himself is the brand” and “There’s no point without Suda” piled up one after another, while some posters even brought up Hajime Tabata, the former director of Final Fantasy XV. The discussion branched out fast, from whether the PS5 exclusivity will actually hold to a full-blown math battle over how to interpret the previous Switch version’s sales figures.

That exhilarating zombie action is back! A brand-new entry in the series kicks off on PS5

“Lollipop Chainsaw” is back — Juliet is back, the zombies are back! Following the 2024 remake “Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP,” a completely new entry in the series is finally coming to PS5 in 2027.

    Except… Suda's not even in it…

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Lollipop Chainsaw” is a 2012 action game directed by Goichi Suda of Grasshopper Manufacture, which received a remake, “RePOP,” in 2024. According to Famitsu, the newly announced full sequel is being developed by NADA HOLDINGS CORP. (Taiwan) and published by Doragami Games (Shinagawa, Tokyo), with no involvement from Suda or Grasshopper Manufacture confirmed at this time. Opinion in the thread was split over whether the PS5 listing means permanent exclusivity or a “timed exclusive” that will later add other platforms — there have been past cases of titles announced as PS5-only that later added Xbox support, so drawing firm conclusions about platform availability from this announcement alone may be premature. There was also a back-and-forth over the previous Switch version’s sales figures, with posters doing rough per-country conversions of worldwide totals — but the actual regional breakdown hasn’t been published, so any such estimate remains speculative.

On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board, rumors that Sony’s new handheld, the “PSP3,” will launch in 2027 became a hot topic. The reported specs put it at around 1.71TFLOPS, with claims circulating that it could run PS5 titles at 60fps by lowering the resolution. In the thread, opinions split over the device being PSN-download-only with no packaged/physical games, the expected price tag of around 200,000 yen, and how to weigh the trade-off with PS6 development resources against competition from the Switch 2 and other gaming handhelds.

But if they're copying the hybrid concept instead of just making a handheld, the Joy-Cons become the sticking point

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

It’s worth noting that “PSP3” is not, as of now, an officially announced Sony product — it stems from rumors and speculative reports of unclear origin. In 2023, Sony already released the “PS Portal,” a peripheral that streams PS5 gameplay to a handheld screen, and the device rumored here is being described either as an evolution of that or as a download-only PSN handheld. The “1.71TFLOPS” figure that circulated in the thread was treated as a rough gauge of processing power, but it’s a rumor-based number, not an official spec, so using it directly to compare against the Switch 2 or gaming PCs is risky. Also, “DLSS” is NVIDIA’s upscaling technology and is distinct from Sony’s own “PSSR,” though some posts in the thread mixed the two up. As for the name, since the PS Vita was never marketed as “PSP2,” some commenters find the “PSP3” label itself a bit odd.

  • 53.1% Say They’d Get Vaccinated for the Next Pandemic — 5ch: ‘LOL, It’s All Guinea Pigs’

A research group from the University of Tokyo’s International Institute for Advanced Studies (Center for New-Generation Infectious Diseases) and Chiba University, among others, published survey results in the international scientific journal “npj Vaccines,” asking 24,577 people whether they would get vaccinated if a vaccine reducing death risk from the next pandemic by 50% or more were approved by the Japanese government and the WHO. 53.1% answered they would “definitely or probably get vaccinated,” with people in their 20s-40s, women, and those with lower income or education showing a tendency toward lower vaccination intent. On 5ch, opinions split over the validity of this analysis and the assessment of COVID vaccine effectiveness, with notable pushback against the framing that links education level to conspiracy theories.

The paper “Vaccine acceptance in a future pandemic after COVID-19 and its decision drivers in Japan,” published in the international scientific journal “npj Vaccines” by a research group from the University of Tokyo’s International Institute for Advanced Studies (Center for New-Generation Infectious Diseases) and Chiba University, is a study investigating vaccination intent for a future pandemic and the factors that shape it.

The research team analyzed data from the health disparities assessment study “JACSIS.” An online survey was conducted from December 2024 to January 2025, targeting 28,000 people aged 15 to 84 (24,577 were included in the final analysis).

Respondents were asked whether they would get vaccinated under the scenario that “the next pandemic occurs, a vaccine reducing death risk from the disease by 50% or more is developed, and it is approved by the Japanese government, the World Health Organization (WHO), and other authorities.”

People who got the COVID vaccine are guaranteed to be extinct in 100 years, but the unvaccinated will still be around in 100 years…

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This survey asked about vaccination intent under the hypothetical scenario that “a vaccine reducing death risk from the next pandemic by 50% or more has been approved” — it is not data verifying the actual effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccines that were distributed. Skipping over this premise creates a mismatch between the many “the COVID vaccine was useless” claims seen on 5ch and the paper’s actual point, leaving the discussion talking past itself. The thread was also split over the validity of the paper’s finding that “people with less education and lower income are more likely to believe misinformation and conspiracy theories, and thus show lower vaccination intent” — pushback framing this as social labeling clashed with those who saw it as a legitimate public health insight. It’s worth noting that posts claiming things like “vaccinated people will die in the near future” are all claims with no scientific backing, and the comments quoted in this article are presented only as individual opinions.

  • Lawson’s New Bargain Bento Is Just Sausage — and the Internet Has Thoughts

It’s been reported that starting September 22, Lawson will roll out 13 bento products, including a “Single-Focus Deluxe!” (“Itten Toppa Sugi!”) lineup that cuts costs by up to 50% by limiting each box to just one topping. A thread went up on 5channel’s game hardware board with photos of bentos topped with nothing but sausage or corn, and commenters quickly pushed back on the framing — the thread presented it as a “poverty” story without mentioning that a pricier “Too Luxurious!” (“Zeitaku Sugi!”) line, packed with more and better ingredients, was launching at the very same time. The conversation then broadened into gripes about rising prices more generally, with posters pointing to everyday changes like shrinking convenience-store rice balls and different banana varieties — producing reactions that went well beyond a simple “Japan is getting poorer” narrative.

Lawson will roll out 13 products in total starting September 22, including "Single-Focus Deluxe!" bentos that cut prices by up to 50% compared to same-sized boxes by limiting each one to a single topping, as well as "Too Luxurious!" bentos that focus on higher-quality, more generous ingredients.

Probably some middle-aged person who got that idea drilled into them by TV or something.

    Background and Key Points

The story originates from a report by Impress Watch on Lawson’s new product lineup: 13 bento items launching at once, split between the budget “Single-Focus Deluxe!” line, which cuts costs by limiting each box to one topping, and the pricier “Too Luxurious!” line, which does the opposite by piling on more ingredients. The thread singled out only the cheaper line and framed it as a story about poverty, which is what sparked the pushback — commenters pointed out that the “Too Luxurious!” line was listed right alongside it, so why leave that out? From there the discussion broadened into everyday examples of price hikes and shrinkflation, like the size of convenience-store rice balls and shifts in banana varieties. It’s worth noting that the “things are smaller than they used to be” impressions shared here are personal anecdotes, not figures drawn from consistent statistics. Some comments also touched on politics and currency policy, but those have been left out of this writeup since they lean toward judgments of specific parties or politicians.

  • Moriyasu Japan: 31-man squad announced for 4 home friendlies after the World Cup! Matsuki, Saito, Tanimura, Nakano earn first call-ups

The Japan Football Association announced on the 17th a 31-man squad for four international friendlies in September and October, the team’s first activity since the North/Central America World Cup. Four players — MF Shunsuke Saito, MF Kyuma Matsuki, FW Kaina Tanimura, and MF Shuto Nakano — earned first-ever call-ups, with 10 new players joining from outside the World Cup squad, while five players including DF Yuto Nagatomo and DF Shogo Taniguchi were dropped. On 5ch, some praised the generational turnover driven by the veterans’ age, while opinions were split over call-ups for players with limited playing time and the selection of players tied to manager Moriyasu’s former club.

Four players earned their first-ever call-ups: MF Shunsuke Saito (Westerlo), MF Kyuma Matsuki (Southampton), FW Kaina Tanimura (Yokohama F. Marinos), and MF Shuto Nakano (Hiroshima).

Along with those four first-timers, the following made the squad from outside the World Cup group, 10 in total: DF Tomoya Ando (St. Pauli), MF Yuki Soma (Machida), MF Koki Kumasaka (Kashiwa), MF Sei Tanaka (Schalke), MF Kota Sano (PSV), and MF Ryunosuke Sato (Valencia). DF Yuto Nagatomo, DF Shogo Taniguchi, DF Yukinari Sugawara, FW Shuto Machino, and FW Koki Ogawa were all left out.

    Background and Talking Points

Manager Hajime Moriyasu’s contract has been extended through the end of September even after the North/Central America World Cup, with Tsuyoshi Oiwa confirmed to take over next year — this squad announcement comes against that backdrop. This time, five players were dropped from the World Cup squad, while 10 players, including four first-time call-ups, newly joined from outside the World Cup group. On the thread, some referred to the call-up of Shuto Nakano — who came up through Sanfrecce Hiroshima, the club Moriyasu once managed — as a ‘Hiroshima quota,’ and there was speculation that Hidemasa Morita’s exclusion came down to a ‘personal grudge,’ though both are just speculation within the thread, with no official explanation from the JFA or the manager. There were also strong voices questioning the call-up of Takefusa Kubo, who has seen limited playing time. Some see the six-month-only extension as compressing the handover period before the next manager’s regime, and it’s being watched as a litmus test for squad selection heading into the Asian Cup.

  • HIV Outbreak Prompts State of Emergency in Fiji — 5ch: ‘Expensive Drugs Can Suppress Onset’

The South Pacific island nation of Fiji has declared a national state of emergency over a growing HIV outbreak. An estimated 1 in 60 adults is infected, putting Fiji sharply at odds with the global trend of declining new HIV infections. The scale of the crisis came to light after the country first declared an epidemic in January 2025 and expanded testing. The spread of methamphetamine has been cited as a contributing factor, and on the forum thread many commenters pointed to shared needles and blood during drug use as the likely cause, while others discussed sexual transmission and mother-to-child transmission — with some exchanges reaffirming that HIV still cannot be fully cured.

(CNN) — The small South Pacific nation of Fiji has declared a national state of emergency amid a spreading HIV outbreak, with the proliferation of methamphetamine cited as a contributing factor.

Fiji, with a population of under one million, is estimated to have HIV infection in 1 in every 60 adults. While the virus remains incurable but treatable, global infection rates have been falling — a trend Fiji is bucking.

Fiji first declared an HIV epidemic in January 2025, and expanded testing since then has revealed the scale of a deepening public health crisis.

    Background and Discussion Points

Fiji, a South Pacific island nation with a population under one million, first declared an HIV epidemic in January 2025, and expanded testing since then has revealed the severity of the outbreak. While new HIV infections are declining globally, Fiji is bucking that trend, with needle-sharing tied to the spread of methamphetamine cited as a contributing factor. On the thread, more commenters pointed to blood exchanged during drug use than to sexual transmission as the likely cause, and the article’s figure that 59 infants contracted the virus through mother-to-child transmission last year also drew attention. At the same time, some baseless assumptions singling out sexual orientation, region, or nationality appeared as well — these unfounded prejudices should be read separately from the article-based point about needle-sharing during meth use. It’s also easy to overlook that HIV still cannot be cured today; the standard approach remains medication that suppresses symptom onset rather than a cure.

  • Rio Kitagawa Tapped as Anchor for Economics Show ‘Mo-Sata’ — 5ch: ‘She Really Is Sharp’

Rio Kitagawa, a TV Tokyo announcer and former member of Morning Musume, will become the anchor of the network’s economics program “Morning Saturday” starting in October, the station announced on the 17th at its fall programming briefing. Kitagawa, who only joined the company this past April, shares the “double promotion” with fellow new hire Serino Suzuki, who joined at the same time. On 5ch’s Hello! Project board, comments praising her ability piled up — “She’s got both talent and work ethic,” “Kitagawa really is sharp” — while others sparked debate by suggesting the appointment had more to do with her talent agency’s ties to the network.

Former Morning Musume Member Rio Kitagawa Named “Morning Saturday” Anchor — TV Tokyo’s Long-Sought Economics Show Gets a Surprisingly Speedy Double Rookie Promotion

TV Tokyo announcers Serino Suzuki and Rio Kitagawa have been confirmed as anchors of “Morning Saturday” (Saturdays at 10 a.m.) starting in October, the network announced on the 17th at its October programming briefing.

Both Kitagawa and Suzuki are rookie announcers who joined the company just this past April. Kitagawa is also known for having previously been a member of Morning Musume. Alongside current anchors Momoka Mine and Haru Saito, the two will bring a fresh new appeal to the show.

If she went into variety, she'd end up working alongside comedians, and sooner or later they'd definitely bring up Morning Musume, forcing her to address it — that's exactly what she wanted to avoid.
With news or economics reporting, even if her school days come up, she can dodge it the same way as before, just saying she did entertainment work as a student.
Things are going exactly the way Kitagawa wanted, so she's probably relieved.

That's beyond lame, it's just pathetic — especially the part where they went out of their way to watch the video.

    Background and Points of Debate

It’s not unusual for former idols to become announcers, but landing an anchor spot on an economics news program is a notable career move. On the thread, opinions were split: some praised Kitagawa’s appointment as a matter of “ability” and “a smart decision,” while others suggested it was “just the relationship between TV Tokyo and Up-Front (her talent agency)” playing out, pointing to the agency’s backing. The fact that fellow new hire Suzuki was appointed to the same slot added to the buzz, since it amounts to a double promotion for two rookies. Some posts also resurfaced past controversies involving Kitagawa, but since these claims couldn’t be verified, they are not covered in this article.
