  • Carp Sink to 4th with 17 Games Under .500 as Critics Blast “Pre-Modern Team Management” — 5ch: “Don’t Care Until They Change Owners”

With the Hiroshima Carp languishing in 4th place at 17 games under .500 and attendance sagging, reporting points to the pre-modern management structure centered on the Matsuda ownership family — rather than the players’ “zombie cigarette incident” itself — as the real driver of the team’s decline. On 5ch, criticism of the front office was joined by talk of GM Kiyoaki Suzuki’s future and calls for a sale, but some pushed back with actual attendance figures, arguing it “hasn’t dropped as much as people think” — turning perception versus hard numbers into the main point of contention.

9/29 (Tue) 14:00 — Koko Yakyu Dot Com (high school baseball news site)

With Japanese pro baseball nearing the postseason and the pennant races in both leagues largely settled, one nagging irritant that just won’t go down easy is the Hiroshima Carp’s performance this year.

This season the Carp have struggled far more than preseason expectations suggested, sitting in 4th place at 17 games under .500 as of September 28. Attendance has plunged too, and the “Carp Girls” craze that once swept the nation has all but vanished.

I think a big factor is that basketball and soccer have become visible all over town now.
Unless they shake off that Showa-era image, baseball's just going to keep declining.

Soccer's Sanfrecce Hiroshima spend money to win titles — a win-at-all-costs front office that still moves rationally while successfully developing young talent.

Baseball's Carp, meanwhile, are weak but won't reinforce the roster — it's just status-quo family management.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Matsuda family has owned the Hiroshima Toyo Carp since the club’s founding and has long held a firm grip on its decision-making. The players’ recent “zombie cigarette incident” was itself an individual act of misconduct, but reporting frames it not as an isolated scandal but as one symptom of a closed-off team culture — pointing, for instance, to the practice of banning media outlets that publish critical coverage. Within the thread, pushback emerged against the general impression that attendance has “dropped,” with posters citing actual September attendance figures to argue it “hasn’t fallen as much as people think,” underscoring the risk of describing reality based on gut feeling alone. The discussion also touched on then-owner Matsuda’s past decision to scrap a domed-stadium plan, tying questions about facility planning amid now-routine extreme heat to broader doubts about the team’s management structure.

  • Togo dazzles against Hiroshima — Tigers’ magic number holds steady at 4

This is a live-thread discussing the September 29, 2026 Giants vs. Hiroshima Carp game at Tokyo Dome. Starter Togo turned in a dominant outing, holding the Carp to just one hit, prompting fans to ask, “When was the last complete-game shutout?” Meanwhile, the Tigers’ own game that day was rained out, leaving their pennant-clinching magic number unchanged at 4, while the Giants’ win narrowed the game gap to 1.5. The thread mixed celebration of Togo’s performance with grumbling about bullpen usage and managerial decisions, plus plenty of trash talk aimed at Tigers fans.

    Background and Talking Points

This thread wasn’t actually posted on the regular baseball live-thread board, but on a Hello! Project (idol) board instead. When the official live-thread boards get overloaded near the end of the pennant race, 5ch threads sometimes get moved to a different board as a makeshift “shelter,” and this appears to be one such case. Also, the “magic number 4” mentioned in the thread is a figure calculated from the combination of wins the Tigers still need and losses other teams accumulate — it can move up or down based on other teams’ results even when the Tigers themselves aren’t playing. That day, the Tigers’ game was rained out, so the magic number itself didn’t change; only the game gap narrowed, because the Giants won. A common misunderstanding is treating “the game gap narrowed” as automatically meaning “the pennant race got closer” — the magic number and the game gap are actually separate metrics.

In a chat thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyō G” (Anything Live-Commentary) board, a discussion about a rookie VTuber’s debut stream became the talk of the thread. In response to a post declaring “A new era for Hololive has arrived 😆,” replies followed voicing concern over how short the stream was, including worried remarks like “Isn’t she going too fast? Won’t she run out of gas?” The thread itself wasn’t built around any single topic — it was a typical freewheeling chat thread on the live-commentary board, with random bits of trivia flowing one after another, from anime popularity polls to chatbot user rankings to nostalgic stream-watching memories, the subject shifting with nearly every post.

Background and key points of this topic

Threads like this are the signature chat-dump style of the “Nandemo Jikkyō G” board — there’s no single incident or news story behind them; it’s business as usual for whatever image or bit of trivia catches people’s attention in the moment to keep flowing one after another. What stood out this time was the exchange around a rookie Hololive member’s debut stream. Since VTuber debut streams are normally treated as a fan festival and tend to run long, reactions like “the stream’s way too short” and “isn’t she going too fast, won’t she run out of gas?” are, read the other way around, also a sign of just how high expectations were. The thread also contained posts mocking the physical appearance of real streamers and VTubers, which this article has left out. One easy trap for readers is treating a chat thread like this as a single, unified topic, when in reality it’s a grab-bag of small, disconnected exchanges — best read with that in mind.

Santa Monica Studio announced on X (formerly Twitter) that “God of War Laufey will be released on disc” — only for the announcement to be retracted shortly after. It then came out on 5ch that the actual physical edition doesn’t contain a Blu-ray disc at all, just a piece of paper with a download code inside the box. This sparked sarcastic jabs at the developer’s defense that “we never said Blu-ray disc,” along with growing concern over Sony’s move away from physical packaging. The debate also spilled over into arguments about the protagonist’s character design.

    Re: #125
Might be true for PS5, yeah

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

In recent years, Sony has increasingly adopted a format for PS5 physical editions in which no actual disc is included — just a download code — and this “God of War Laufey” case appears to be another instance of that trend. As pointed out in the thread, this isn’t unique to this title; it’s part of a broader industry-wide shift away from physical distribution, driven by disc production costs and shrinking factory output. Two points became the main focus of debate: first, the sequence of events in which Santa Monica initially announced a “disc version” only to retract it, and second, unease over whether something can even be called “physical” when the box contains nothing but a download code. Concerns were also raised about the fate of other upcoming titles, such as Persona 6 and the Final Fantasy VII Remake series, reflecting broader anxiety about the future of packaged game sales. Separately, the back-and-forth over the protagonist’s character design was a debate specific to this title, distinct from the disc-cancellation issue itself.

  • “The Biggest Winner from Ex-AKB” — Minami Minegishi and Tetsuya’s Mansion Sparks a Stir

Tetsuya of the popular YouTuber group Tokai On Air revealed on his channel the new home he built with his wife, former AKB48 member Minami Minegishi, after five years of planning — and it became a hot topic online. The exterior is done in Tetsuya’s signature color, orange, and the house is equipped with security features including vein-pattern authentication. On 5channel, the thread quickly moved past the mansion itself into a debate over “who’s the biggest winner among former AKB members,” with names like Haruna Kojima, Rino Sashihara, and Kayo Noro brought up as posters compared income sources and the caliber of their husbands.

“The Biggest Winner from Ex-AKB”: Tokai On Air’s Tetsuya and Minami Minegishi’s “Mansion” Stuns the Internet — “On a Completely Different Level,” “Way Beyond What I Imagined”

On the 28th, Tetsuya of the popular YouTuber group Tokai On Air posted an update on his personal YouTube channel “Please Search for Veritan,” unveiling in full the new home he spent five years planning together with his wife, former AKB48 member Minami Minegishi — and it’s become a huge topic of conversation.

The new home is unmistakably “Tetsuya” from the outside in. The couple went back and forth on using his signature orange as the design motif, weighing the risk that it might make the house easy to identify, but ultimately agreed orange was the way to go — a decision they reached after making sure to install top-tier security features like vein-pattern authentication.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Minami Minegishi is best known for the 2013 video in which she shaved her head and apologized after a relationship scandal broke; she continued her career from there and eventually married Tokai On Air’s Tetsuya. The reveal of their new home is being read by many as a symbol of how far she’s come since that chapter. What split the thread was the single question of “who’s the biggest winner among former AKB members” — one camp judges it by romantic/marital status (the social standing of one’s partner), while another, pointing to figures like Rino Sashihara and Haruna Kojima, judges it by entertainment-business earnings, so no simple ranking emerges. It’s also worth noting that celebrity mansion price tags are often quoted assuming central-Tokyo land prices, but Tokai On Air is based in Aichi Prefecture, where the math is different — something easy to miss from the thread alone. The point that YouTuber income comes through direct contracts rather than being skimmed by ad agencies the way TV income is gets raised as a reason they can earn so much, but it’s worth flagging that this isn’t backed by verified figures.

*This article is composed from excerpts and a summary of the 5channel (Geinou/Sports News+) thread ““The Biggest Winner from Ex-AKB” — Tokai’s Tetsuya and Minami Minegishi’s Mansion, “On a Completely Different Level,” “Way Beyond What I Imagined”.”

  • Is the “Switch 2 + PC combo” unbeatable? 5ch: “Why’s everyone so mad about it?”

A post went up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board arguing that “the Switch 2 + PC combo should be the obvious optimal answer, yet people get furious when you say so.” Some posters noted that gaming setups used to require owning every home console from Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo plus a PC to be fully covered, whereas now a Switch 2 and a PC (plus a smartphone/tablet) is enough. The thread also drifted into side debates about PC heat and fan noise, worries about future price hikes, and how to treat Palworld’s early-access sales.

    Background and Points of Contention

In the past, many games required owning all three consoles — PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch — plus a PC to have full coverage. In recent years, though, many major titles now support both PC and Switch-family hardware, creating a situation where “two devices are enough.” What split the thread was the reasoning behind the backlash against flatly calling this combo the “optimal solution”: some argued it stems from distrust of people who publicly claim to own a PC while trashing certain genres of PC games, while others countered that this is just an unfair generalization. The back-and-forth over Palworld also touched on differing understanding of a PC-market-specific business practice — whether early-access sales should be counted together with full-release sales. Note that this article omits some posts, such as ones that lump an entire hardware fanbase together under a derogatory label.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “The Switch 2 + PC combo is the ultimate setup, yet some people get abnormally angry when you say so — what’s their deal?.”

  • PS5’s Marvel’s Wolverine Sales Slump: Down 75% in Japan, 60% in Europe vs. Predecessor, Data Sparks Buzz

An aggregated image circulating online claims that sales of Marvel’s Wolverine for PS5 have fallen 75% in Japan and 60% in Europe compared to its predecessor, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, sparking discussion on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. The previous title reportedly sold around 2.5 million units worldwide in its launch window, so a simple extrapolation suggests Wolverine’s worldwide sales could be stuck in the hundreds of thousands. Posters in the thread were divided over the terms of Sony’s contract with Marvel, the outlook for recouping development costs, and whether the comparison is even valid given how much the ratio of digital sales has shifted since the last game.

Not that Spidey itself was all that great to begin with either.
Keeping the combat — which wasn't that fun to start with — basically unchanged and then making it the whole focus for Wolverine was obviously a bad call, fair point.

    Background and Points of Debate

It’s worth noting that the figures in this thread come from an aggregated image posted on social media, not an official number released by Sony. In Japan’s retail sales surveys, the share of digital downloads has been climbing year after year, so comparing straight against the previous title’s launch may make the physical-only decline look larger than the real drop actually is. This very point was a source of disagreement in the thread over whether the comparison is even valid. There was also talk that Marvel could terminate its deal with Sony if sales fall short of 6 million units, but the contract itself has never been made public, so readers should treat that detail as unconfirmed.

  • I Can’t Take Packed Trains Anymore: 5ch Asks, ‘Is This the Glamorous Tokyo Life I Dreamed Of?’

A post showing a photo of a packed train in central Tokyo, captioned with the anguished cry “I can’t take this anymore,” sparked a wide-ranging discussion about commuting on 5ch’s Nanimo Jikkyo (Live News) board. Comments compared it to trains in India, brought up the frequent groping incidents on the Saikyo Line, and threw out concrete ideas like commuting by moped or making train cars double-decker. The thread also spiraled into debates over why remote work hasn’t caught on and whether it’s worth living in the city center, with one comment even noting that “Tokyo’s prosperity is propped up by the sacrifices of the people commuting into it.”

This is what I have to do every single day until I retire!

    52AnonymousSep 30, 2026 07:18
    Re: #45
Double-decker cars can structurally only fit two doors, and the stairs end up super narrow, so boarding and getting off takes forever.
Running them in the city would cause constant delays, so it's a no-go.
    60AnonymousSep 30, 2026 07:21
    Re: #45
It's possible, but fares would jump and you wouldn't be able to stand, so the total passenger capacity might actually end up lower.

Bringing up 'the workplace' now is moving the goalposts, lol. If you're picking a bike, of course you'd look for parking at work too. And with a moped you can often park it at station bike lots as well, so overall a scooter still beats the train.
    77AnonymousSep 30, 2026 07:27
    Re: #67
No, we were talking about commuting from the start, so there's no goalpost-moving here.
Monthly station bike lots are rarely available, and once you factor in gas money you'll easily blow past the cost of a commuter pass — and barely any company allows commuting by car or motorbike in the first place.
    82AnonymousSep 30, 2026 07:30

Osaka, Fukuoka, and Nagoya all have that stuff too, so there's no need to specifically pick Tokyo.

Background and key points of this discussion

According to a Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism survey, congestion rates on major train lines have dropped to around 150%, but the crowding still feels intense in practice, and awareness campaigns against groping continue on some lines, including the Saikyo Line. The thread also brought up making train cars double-decker, but in reality this isn’t used on commuter lines in the greater Tokyo area, since it would lengthen boarding times and disrupt train intervals. Some commenters claimed remote work “hasn’t caught on,” but the rate of work-from-home varies widely by industry, and it isn’t the case that companies have uniformly banned it. The debate over whether to live in the city center or the suburbs also largely comes down to personal values — whether you prioritize commute time or housing costs — so it isn’t a question with a simple right answer.

  • ‘Travis Japan Effect’ Draws 10,000 Fans to J2 Akita Match, Coach Ken Yoshida: ‘We Have the Fewest Soccer Players of Any Prefecture’

In a match on the 26th between J2’s Blaublitz Akita and Albirex Niigata that ended 2-2, 10,847 fans turned out at the home Soyu Stadium — the second-highest attendance in club history. The surge is believed to stem from a combination of the “rice jersey” giveaway to the first 6,000 fans and a promotional boost from idol group Travis Japan, with social media dubbing it the “Travis Japan effect.” Coach Ken Yoshida’s comment that “Akita Prefecture has the smallest soccer-playing population in Japan” also struck a chord. On the 5channel sports/entertainment news board, opinions were split on whether this attendance boost reflects a genuine rise in soccer’s popularity or is just a temporary bump from idol fandom.

On the 26th, J2’s Blaublitz Akita faced Albirex Niigata in Matchday 8 of the J2 League, playing to a 2-2 draw.

10,847 fans packed the home Soyu Stadium — the second-largest crowd in club history — making for a match that energized Akita soccer both on and off the pitch.

Akita fell behind in the 15th minute to a goal from Mateus Moraes, but Ryoya Iizumi equalized in the 45th minute. Ryohei Oishi then put Akita ahead with a clever counterattack finish in the 69th minute, only for Yuri Castilho to level it again in the 90th minute — after a hard-fought battle, the two sides split the points with high-flying Niigata.

The governor who led the prefecture for so long, and his ancestors, the Satake clan —

In the Kamakura era, they dithered over whether to side with the Minamoto or the Taira and ended up sitting on the fence.
Result: Minamoto no Yoritomo attacked them, they surrendered without much of a fight, and lost their post as shugo (military governor) of Hitachi Province.

In the Sengoku era, they dithered again over whether to side with the Eastern or Western army and sat on the fence once more.
Result: they were ordered to relocate — and downgrade — from Hitachi Province, their base since the Heian era, to Akita.

Maybe generations of following such an indecisive, backward-looking clan is exactly why the prefecture ended up with such a backward-looking mentality.

By comparison, the Happinets' (the local basketball team) economic ripple effect is only around 2 to 2.5 billion yen.

Even ignoring substitution effects, a 32.5 billion yen new arena wouldn't pay for itself even in 10 years.

It loses on construction cost, home attendance, away attendance, spending per fan, and number of games — so I genuinely don't get why anyone would think a soccer-specific stadium would generate more economic impact than an arena.

Tickets for the next match are 500 yen.

That's only for the supporters' section behind the goal.
That's a perk just for the die-hard supporters.
Regular fans couldn't watch comfortably from a spot like that anyway.

You can get top-flight pro baseball tickets for 500 yen with a discount voucher too, you know lol

Background and Key Points of This Story

J2’s average attendance this season is around 8,800, while Blaublitz Akita’s typical average sits at just 4,000-5,000. The backdrop is a structural issue: Akita has the smallest soccer-playing population of any prefecture in Japan, which is the context behind Coach Ken Yoshida’s comment. This match’s attendance of over 10,000 appears to be the result of a combination of the “rice jersey” giveaway to the first 6,000 fans and the buzz generated by Travis Japan’s promotional visit, but whether this translates into a lasting boost in attendance remains uncertain — the thread itself was split on whether it reflects rising interest in soccer or just a one-off idol-fueled bump. It’s also worth noting that the 7-billion-yen economic ripple effect figure comes from an individual post on X quoted by a commenter, not an official announcement from the club or local government, and the comparison with the new arena plan is likewise that same poster’s own estimate rather than a verified statistic.

  • Ippo’s Slap Scene Photo Stirs Up 5ch: ‘You’ve Made Me Angry’

An image of a scene from “Hajime no Ippo” in which protagonist Ippo Makunouchi slaps another character was posted to 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” live-commentary board, drawing a wave of reactions. In the scene, Ippo flies into a rage and strikes a delinquent he’d been teaching to box, after learning the young man only wanted boxing skills to get stronger at street fighting. The thread buzzed over Ippo’s famous line “You’ve made me angry” and the fact that the victim lost his memory of the incident and never filed a police report, before spiraling into a broader debate about the series as a whole — changes in the art style over its decades-long run, the story being stuck mid-hiatus in the prison arc, and lingering questions over why Ippo has never won a world title.

He's Aoki's little brother, so it's fine — his older brother got treated way worse by an actual world champion.

Ippo: "Hey, victim, please go file a police report."
    Victim: "I don't remember what happened, so I can't."
    Case closed.

The art in Hajime no Ippo is insanely good, it's honestly scary — and it hasn't declined at all either.

The author's gotten really into Chiikawa (the popular cute-character franchise) too, so who knows where this is headed.

Every single time it's Ippo getting beaten to a pulp and then landing one big punch to win.

    Re: #47
These days he can dodge, throw jabs, switch stances, and even looks like he can counter — a real all-arounder now. Plus in his sparring session with Mashiba, a world-class fighter a weight class up, he more than held his own.

Losing his temper is one thing, but why'd he go straight to punching the guy in the face?

"At this point" — at what point, exactly?
    90AnonymousSep 29, 2026 22:23
The series started back in an era when plenty of Japanese boxers were becoming world champions in the lighter weight classes, and yet they never once let Ippo win a world title — that genuinely makes no sense.

Did the author want to end it with Ippo's retirement, but Kodansha shot that down and made him drag it out?
    99AnonymousSep 29, 2026 22:28
    Re: #95
If the ending was just "loses out of nowhere to some no-name who isn't even a champion, then retires," well of course they'd stop him… That's worse than Yu Yu Hakusho. Still, feels like it would've been better off just ending there.
    109AnonymousSep 29, 2026 22:42
Why didn't they just go with the straightforward story of making Ippo world champion in the first place?
    111AnonymousSep 29, 2026 22:45
    Re: #109
Because that would get in the way of Miyata's whole arc. Taking up the mantle Date passed on to him and beating Ricardo to become champion would be a clean ending, sure — but then what happens to Miyata…

    Background and Points of Discussion

“Hajime no Ippo” is a boxing manga that has been running since 1989, already spanning more than three decades. The reactions here mainly split over the evaluation of the artwork, with some arguing it has “gotten worse” or “lost its former energy through oversimplification,” while others countered that it has actually become more technically skilled. Whether the art-style shift that comes with any long-running series counts as decline or evolution is largely a matter of readers’ subjective taste. It’s also true that the series has been on long-term hiatus since entering the prison arc, but the reasons for that and any timeline for its return have not been officially explained by the author or publisher — the thread’s suggestion that “Kodansha is dragging it out” is purely reader speculation, not a confirmed fact. As for Ippo never having won a world title, since the series hasn’t concluded, the honest answer is simply that “it hasn’t been decided yet,” so any definitive judgment on that point would be premature.
