  • Akita City Hikes Water & Sewer Rates Sharply — Now the Highest Among Tohoku Prefectural Capitals

Starting next April, Akita City will raise its water and sewer rates. Water rates will go up by an average of 32%, and sewer rates by 18%. For a standard four-person household using 20 cubic meters a month, the combined bill will hit 7,502 yen — the highest among the six Tohoku prefectural capitals. That’s over 2,000 yen more than Sendai, currently the cheapest. The city cites falling rate revenue from population decline, but on 5ch, commenters debated whether the hike is linked to the city’s ongoing dedicated soccer stadium project, the legal requirement that water utilities be run as self-funding independent enterprises, and the wide disparities in water rates seen across Japan.

Akita City will raise its water and sewer rates next April. Water rates will rise by an average of 32%, and sewer rates by 18%. For an average household, that puts the monthly bill at 7,502 yen for 20 cubic meters of usage — the highest of any Tohoku prefectural capital. The city points to declining rate revenue amid population decline, but residents have voiced dissatisfaction.

According to the city, for the standard four-person household usage of 20 cubic meters a month, current rates are 2,860 yen for water and 3,113 yen for sewer. Among Tohoku’s prefectural capitals, Akita’s water rate is currently the second-cheapest after Aomori, while its sewer rate sits around the middle (see table).

From next April, the water rate will jump to 3,828 yen and the sewer rate to 3,674 yen. Both will become the highest among the six cities, pushing the combined bill up by about 1,500 yen. That leaves a gap of more than 2,000 yen compared to Sendai, the cheapest of the group.

Yep, it broke 40% for the first time ever.

According to finalized figures from the 2025 national census released by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications on the 29th, Akita had the highest elderly ratio (share of population age 65 or older) of any prefecture, at 40.0% — up 2.5 points from the previous 2020 census. Kochi followed at 36.9%, then Aomori at 36.3%. Compared to the 2020 census, the elderly ratio rose in every prefecture except Osaka. Thirty-six prefectures now exceed 30%.

A fair number of people don't seem to know that.'

For water, you can just dig a well.
For sewage, a combined septic/treatment tank (johkasou) works fine.
That way you don't have to pay those high water and sewer rates
to Veolia (the French water utility giant).

    The costs involved:
For water — well-digging fee, pump purchase cost, electricity.
For a combined septic tank — tank purchase and installation fee,
blower electricity cost, and regular maintenance costs.

If you get the qualification yourself, you can even do the maintenance yourself.
Japan is 70% mountains, with a temperate monsoon climate and plenty of rain.
Except for that one lone house up on a mountain, groundwater is abundant everywhere.
Around Lake Inba they're practically drowning in too much water.

So why build dams and drink bad-quality water from them?
Well, politics reflects the people, I guess.

    Re: #130
It's at the level where unless literally every resident leaves, people are going to laugh at you

Background and Key Points of Debate

Water and sewer utilities operate as local public enterprises under a principle of independent accounting, meaning the costs of renewing aging infrastructure are, in principle, meant to be covered by rate revenue. Many commenters in the thread linked the rate hike to Akita City’s ongoing dedicated soccer stadium project, but under the system, water utility accounting is kept separate from the general budget and other public works spending — so directly connecting the two is a misunderstanding. That said, it’s understandable that residents’ frustration would concentrate on the rate hike when multiple topics requiring public funds surfaced around the same time. Akita Prefecture recorded the highest elderly population ratio in Japan at 40% in the 2025 national census, and the resulting squeeze on rate revenue from population decline isn’t unique to Akita City — it’s a structural challenge shared by local governments across Japan.

  • U-21 Japan Faces Korea Tonight in the Final on TBS — 5ch: ‘There’s No Way We Win When They’re Playing for Military Service Exemption’

The men’s soccer final of the Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026 kicks off at 7:30 PM on the 3rd at Toyota Stadium, with the U-21 Japan national team taking on the U-23 Korea national team for Japan’s first gold medal in 16 years. The match will be broadcast live nationwide on the TBS network, with Yoichiro Kakitani and Kazunari Ninomiya among those scheduled to appear. On 5ch threads, discussion centered on Korea’s determination to field a full-strength squad in pursuit of the military service exemption granted to gold medalists, contrasted with Japan’s tournament-rule position of prioritizing U-21 players to build up its squad for the Los Angeles Olympics two years from now. The threads also touched on why Kakitani keeps getting tapped as a commentator across multiple networks, along with questions about the Japan Football Association’s player development policy.

The men’s soccer final of the Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026 will be held at Toyota Stadium starting at 7:30 PM on Saturday the 3rd. The U-21 Japan national team will face the U-23 Korea national team in a “Japan-Korea clash” for Japan’s first gold medal in 16 years.

Under head coach Go Oiwa, the U-21 Japan team swept all three group-stage matches, beat the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) 1-0 in the quarterfinals, and then defeated Uzbekistan after extra time and a penalty shootout in the semifinals to reach the final.

This highly anticipated match will be broadcast live nationwide on the TBS network starting at 7:00 PM on Saturday the 3rd, with simultaneous streaming on TVer and a live stream also planned on U-NEXT. The commentary team for the final has not been announced as of this writing, but according to TBS’s official site, the following lineup is scheduled to appear.

The Asian Games has no mandatory call-up power, so if a club refuses to release a player, that's the end of it.
That's why those players can be called up for the senior national team on official FIFA match days but not for this.
The overseas-based players who do get called up for the Asian Games are guys who barely get match time at their clubs — they're not treated as key players there.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

South Korea grants military service exemptions to gold medalists at international competitions like the Olympics and Asian Games, and this time too, the U-23 Korea national team is fielding a full-strength squad built around its Olympic-generation players. Japan, by contrast, isn’t using the overage slots permitted by tournament rules and is instead competing with a U-21-centered squad aimed at building up the generation for the Los Angeles Olympics two years from now — meaning the two countries’ reasons for entering the tournament are fundamentally different, as the thread explained. Where opinion split was over how to weigh this “difference in seriousness”: some argued Japan should take advantage of Korea’s desperation over the exemption, while others raised concerns about development opportunities being unevenly distributed across generations. The thread also floated the view that Yoichiro Kakitani keeps getting picked as a commentator across multiple networks mainly for the ratings boost, given his name recognition and history of TV commercial appearances. The difference between the U-21 and U-23-plus-overage tournament regulations isn’t obvious from the article text alone and is worth keeping in mind to avoid confusion.

  • Mom brings her 3- and 5-year-old to Afghanistan — when called out over the government’s evacuation advisory, YouTuber claps back: “The Foreign Ministry? Can’t really trust them~”

Yuri, the YouTuber behind “Dokonjo Yuri’s Mother-Child Travels,” who documents trips with her two kids, reported on Threads that she had entered Afghanistan with her 3- and 5-year-old children. Japan’s Foreign Ministry has issued an evacuation advisory for the entire country, but when criticized, Yuri shot back, “The Foreign Ministry? Can’t really trust them~”, sparking a wave of backlash. On a 5ch Geinou/Sports Express+ (entertainment and sports news board) thread, users debated the security risks under Taliban rule, comparisons to past Japanese hostage incidents, whether it’s right to bring kids along, and the question of personal responsibility.

On September 30, Yuri of “Dokonjo Yuri’s Mother-Child Travels” (4,600 subscribers), who posts about traveling with her two kids, reported on Threads that she had arrived in Afghanistan with her 3- and 5-year-old children. After facing criticism for bringing children into a country under a nationwide Foreign Ministry evacuation advisory, Yuri shot back, “The Foreign Ministry? Can’t really trust them~”, which only fueled the backlash further.

A “mother-child journey” around the world with two kids

Yuri launched her YouTube channel in April 2025, documenting trips around the world under the theme of a “mother-child journey” with her two children. In her very first self-introduction video, she revealed that alongside running a photo-candle brand, she had “recently started working as a hostess at a cabaret club too,” and said her dream was to visit all 196 countries in the world.

Whatever trouble she runs into, it's on her — personal responsibility.

Background and key points of the debate

Japan’s Foreign Ministry overseas safety advisory has placed all of Afghanistan at the highest risk level, meaning travel to the country itself is widely considered a high-risk act. The 2004 hostage-taking of Japanese nationals in Iraq referenced in the thread (the case of Noriaki Imai, who survived, and Shosei Koda, who was killed) was the incident that first sparked widespread debate over “personal responsibility” for Japanese citizens traveling to dangerous regions, and the same framing was repeatedly invoked again in this controversy. Whether it’s acceptable for the YouTuber herself to travel there, and whether it’s acceptable to bring minor children into a dangerous region, are technically separate questions — but within the thread the two got tangled together, which is largely why opinions ended up so split.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports Express+) thread “Mom brings her 3- and 5-year-old to Afghanistan — when called out over the government’s evacuation advisory, YouTuber claps back: “The Foreign Ministry? Can’t really trust them~”.”

  • Deadline Mix-Up Bars 8 Middle and High Schoolers From National Track Meet — Japan Athletics Federation: “No Late Entries”

The Osaka Junior High School Athletic Federation mistook the entry deadline for a national track and field meet, leaving eight qualified middle and high school students unable to compete. On October 3, the Japan Association of Athletics Federations (JAAF) said the official in charge had claimed “I accessed the system 10 minutes before the deadline, but the entry button didn’t appear” — but after checking the logs, JAAF found the actual login was only about a minute before the deadline, pointing out the discrepancy and stating “we will not accept late entries.” On 5ch, opinions split between those calling for leniency out of concern for the affected students’ academic and athletic futures, and those arguing that granting an exception would render the deadline meaningless.

After the deadline, the Osaka official reported that "I tried to submit the entry on the system about 10 minutes before the deadline, but the submit button didn't appear." However, when JAAF checked the system logs, it turned out the official had actually logged into the entry system only about one minute before the deadline. Rules and feelings are separate things, and if you allow one exception there's no end to it.

You think every rule has zero exceptions? lol
    299AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:21
    Re: #260
It's not even something handled on an individual basis, and depending on the competition it could shape the rest of someone's life, yet the student themselves had no way to avoid it — that's just too harsh.
So I think there should be pre-defined exceptions for certain cases, not a blanket no-exceptions policy.
If the student forgot to submit it themselves, then fine, tough luck, end of story.

    Background and Points of Contention

Entry deadlines for national meets are strictly enforced in order to treat every qualified athlete fairly. JAAF is an independent body that governs the sport, not a local government entity, so even though the governor of Osaka Prefecture made a public request, it falls outside JAAF’s jurisdiction and doesn’t directly influence any decision on relief. In this case, system logs revealed a discrepancy between the official’s claim — “I accessed the system 10 minutes before the deadline, but the submit button didn’t appear” — and the actual login time, which was only about one minute before the deadline, raising questions about the credibility of the explanation itself, beyond simply missing the deadline. Because the meet’s results factor into recommendations and scouting from high schools and universities, opinions were divided over how far relief should extend given that the students themselves bore no responsibility for the mistake.

The Steam version of “Gears of War: E-Day,” the new title from Microsoft’s Xbox studios, has launched into early access and surpassed 20,000 concurrent players, marking the best start in the series’ history. The game has no PS5 version and is Xbox/PC exclusive only, but its strong Steam debut became a hot topic on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board. At the same time, some pointed out that the numbers look weak compared to the early-access scale once hit by “Starfield,” a title that posted huge results as an Xbox exclusive — and once counterarguments noting that Game Pass players aren’t included in the Steam count entered the mix, opinion split over how to read the figures.

The Gears of War series has long been developed as an Xbox-centric IP, and it’s worth noting upfront that this latest entry, “E-Day,” has no PS5 version and is positioned as an Xbox/PC (including Steam) exclusive. Early access refers to giving a subset of players advance access before the official launch, and Steam’s concurrent-player count only reflects people playing through Steam specifically. The 230,000 early-access figure for “Starfield” raised for comparison in the thread is cited as a benchmark representing the largest scale ever for an Xbox-exclusive title, and opinions split over whether this time’s 20,000 looks weak by comparison. That said, this title is also being offered simultaneously on Microsoft’s subscription service Game Pass, and players who access it via Game Pass aren’t reflected in the Steam concurrent count. The thread repeatedly raised this distinction, and it’s worth noting for readers that several posters argued it’s premature to judge the overall level of excitement from the Steam figure alone.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board thread “[Bad News for PS Fans] Gears of War: E-Day Steam Version Tops 20,000 Concurrent Players Even in Early Access, Marking Its Best-Ever Start lol.”

  • Jun-ichi Kawamoto Discharged From Hospital — But 5ch Can’t Stop Talking About His Old Welfare Scandal

Jun-ichi Kawamoto (51), of the comedy duo “Jicho Kacho,” was discharged from the hospital on October 3 after being admitted for pancreatic trouble, commenting, “I hope to get back to doing comedy once I’ve gradually rebuilt my strength.” On the 5ch Entertainment/Sports News+ thread reacting to the news, comments dwelling on his 2012 welfare-fraud scandal outnumbered simple get-well wishes. Users were split over why his image still hasn’t recovered despite his apology and repayment of the benefits, as well as over his TikTok activity and whether he should keep appearing on TV — with only a handful offering straightforward support for his comeback.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

In 2012, it was reported that Jun-ichi Kawamoto’s mother, whom he lived with, had been receiving welfare benefits while he himself was earning a substantial income; he subsequently apologized and repaid the benefits received. The point of contention on the thread was why criticism still hasn’t died down even after the apology and repayment — some argued that mishandling the fallout on social media is what dragged it out, while others argued he should have simply ignored the online backlash from the start, leaving opinions divided on what the “correct” response to the firestorm would have been. Meanwhile, the news itself is simply a report of his discharge and recovery from pancreatic trouble, with no direct connection to the old welfare issue. What’s easy to miss from the article alone is that most of the thread’s criticism isn’t actually aimed at his current illness, but at events from more than a decade ago.

  • Haruka Fukuhara’s Reported Relationship With Takefusa Kubo: 5ch Dubs Her “A Saint Who Doesn’t Pick Men By Looks”

News that actress Haruka Fukuhara (28) is dating Japan national team footballer Takefusa Kubo set off a wave of posts on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo” (general live-discussion) board calling her “a saint who doesn’t choose men by their face.” Rather than dwelling on the relationship itself, the thread quickly drifted into debates over Kubo’s estimated salary, his looks, and Fukuhara’s track record as an actress and former idol, with plenty of jabs about the age gap and her child-star days as “Main-chan.” Opinions split between warm and withering, and the thread never really landed on a consensus.

    Background and talking points

Haruka Fukuhara is best known for playing the beloved NHK educational-TV character “Main-chan” as a child, a nickname the thread kept circling back to. Takefusa Kubo, who spent part of his teens in FC Barcelona’s youth academy, is now a key player for Japan’s national team, and appears to have a noticeable age gap with Fukuhara. The thread spent far more energy debating Kubo’s estimated income, his looks, and Fukuhara’s career resume than it did discussing whether the relationship itself was even true — much of the back-and-forth wandered well off topic. Note that all details about the relationship come from posts within the 5ch thread itself; this article has not been able to verify them against a primary source.

※This article excerpts and summarizes the 5ch (“Nandemo Jikkyo” board) thread “Haruka Fukuhara (28) revealed to be a saint who doesn’t pick men by looks wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.”

  • Woman Baffled Her Picnic Date Has No Car — 5ch: “It’s Like Taking the JR Train to Adventure World”

A post went viral online after a woman said she was put off when she learned that the man she’d met on a dating app — who had invited her on a picnic date to Hakone — didn’t own a car. The post was picked up on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board, where opinions split over whether a car is really necessary for a picnic. Some argued you can easily reach Hakone by train or the Romancecar, while others countered that a car makes more sense for comfort and carrying gear, and the debate spread into the question of who should be responsible for transportation on a date — the man or the woman.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The original post came from the anonymous diary site anond.hatelabo.jp, and it’s a familiar pattern for a personal story like this to spread on 5ch along with a mix of support and backlash. Hakone is a destination reachable by train from central Tokyo or Yokohama via the Odakyu Romancecar or the Tokaido Line, so the thread saw “you can get there fine without a car” collide head-on with “a car is more comfortable for a date.” Underlying the debate is disagreement over whether driving and arranging transportation should be seen as the man’s role, along with the broader dynamic in dating-app matchmaking where owning a car can become a yardstick men get judged by. At the same time, some replies mocked the post using language tied to discrimination against people with disabilities — this article excludes those comments.

  • Delivery Driver’s Post Claiming “Cash-Paying Customers Cause More Trouble” Sparks Debate on 5ch

A poster believed to be a food delivery driver sparked debate on 5ch after claiming that “90% of customers who pay cash-on-delivery are idiots,” backing it up with specific reasons. The poster mocked the common customer excuse of “I pay cash because I don’t know how much I’ve spent,” prompting a wave of comments urging a shift to cashless payments. Others pushed back, arguing that card payments lead to overspending and that cash gives a more tangible sense of money for purchases over 10,000 yen (about $65) — highlighting a clash in values between cash loyalists and cashless advocates.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Some delivery-proxy platforms let customers choose cash-on-delivery payment, which often means the delivery driver has to front the change themselves. The thread’s disagreement centered on whether cash payment itself is really the source of trouble — some argued the real issue isn’t the payment method but the lack of a system for confirming payment methods in advance, or poor communication with customers. Others pointed out that the feeling of “overspending with cards” may stem from the psychological restraint of physically handing over cash, suggesting that going cashless isn’t necessarily always the rational choice. It’s worth keeping in mind that the strong language in the thread reflects the frustration of delivery workers, and isn’t necessarily representative of cash-paying customers as a whole.

  • Morning Musume ’26’s Morioka Show: Even the Matinee Leaves the 3rd Floor Nearly Empty — Low Turnout Sparks Buzz

Seating information shared on 5ch revealed that at Morning Musume ’26’s Morioka concert, even the matinee show left empty seats all the way to the back of the 2nd floor, while the evening show hadn’t sold tickets close to the last rows of the 1st floor either. The thread also compared annual attendance figures, pointing out that while Juice=Juice is doing well, Morning Musume and ANGERME are struggling, sparking a wider discussion about the gap between Hello! Project’s internal pecking order and actual attendance numbers. It was also noted that the situation didn’t improve even on a tour that added new members.

Morioka matinee: general seating 2F Block C row 4, seats 29-30; family seating 2F Block L row 14, seats 3-4 (discounted "family seats" for parents with kids)

Looking at the empty seats on the 2nd floor and above at today's ANGERME show, I really felt that Juice=Juice's "packed house" effect still hasn't spread to Hello! Project as a whole. This is Nagoya, the cursed venue where even °C-ute at their peak couldn't fill this same Forest Hall, and Mai Yajima cried tears of frustration during the MC. How to fill this venue is actually a pretty important question.

    @
ANGERME's autumn tour "Fūrinkazan" was way too good. The current lineup's ANGERME is strong and way too cool. Such a waste that seats from row 3-4 on the 2nd floor and further back were empty.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

As of 2026, Hello! Project runs several groups in parallel — Morning Musume ’26, Juice=Juice, ANGERME, Country Girls, and others — with each group’s tour venue size and number of shows decided by the agency. Note that figures raised in the thread, such as “Nogizaka46’s 2026 turnout of 500,000,” are unverified numbers posted on 5ch, not official published statistics. The discussion centered on the mismatch between the agency’s apparent obsession with maintaining a strict “pecking order” among groups — continuing to book large venues for groups with weak turnout — and the reality that even adding new members failed to boost attendance. Meanwhile, some see Juice=Juice’s strength as coming from steadily building popularity without relying on graduation-driven marketing.
