  • Is “Material Desire” What Gets NEETs Back to Work? 5ch: “I’m Working Now So I Can Relax Sooner”

A thread titled “I think material desire is what drives people out of NEET life” took off on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” (Anything-Goes Live) board. Some posters said they started working because they wanted games or other things, while others pointed to the need for approval, the drive to reach FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) for peace of mind, or simply the desire to become somebody — the takeaway being that everyone’s motivation to work is different.

There were also some tough takes: a sense of crisis alone won’t change a person — without desire welling up from inside, there’s no escaping NEET life.

I don't think that really works.

There are shut-ins who wasted away and died after their parents passed, and shut-ins who ended up homeless and were taken into protective custody after their parents died.
The idea that a life-threatening crisis automatically makes the power to work spring up inside you is pure fantasy.
    28AnonymousAug 23, 2026 17:56
    Re: #25
    Exactly.
At the end of the day, a NEET is someone who's already fallen once — without something coming from inside themselves, nothing's going to change.

Sounds to me like the parents just spoiled them too much.
You can't do a job without ever having experienced one —
you push through the hard parts and it gradually gets easier.
It's the environment's fault for spoiling them so much that quitting became an easy way out.
There's no paradise waiting at the end of running away forever.

Come to think of it, manga, anime, games, and streaming are basically the root of all evil churning out NEETs.

It's not a hard number I have in mind, but for me —
something like earning 100,000 yen a month through struggle so intense you can't focus on anything else, never getting used to the job, and that situation never changing —
that's when I'd say someone has no talent for earning money.

    Background and Key Points

Japan’s NEET category (“Not in Employment, Education, or Training”) isn’t just slang — it’s a statistic the Cabinet Office and Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare have tracked since the early 2000s, originally covering ages 15–34, with numbers hovering in the mid-hundred-thousands for over a decade. The term overlaps heavily in public discourse with hikikomori (social withdrawal), and posts like #25’s image of a shut-in “wasting away” after their parents die are a direct, if unlabeled, reference to Japan’s “8050 problem” — aging parents in their 80s still housing and supporting children in their 50s who never entered the workforce, a crisis that becomes visible only when the parent dies or can no longer provide care. FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) and its “Lean FIRE” variant are imported Western finance-culture terms that have found a receptive audience in Japan’s low-wage, high-cost-of-living urban economy, explaining why several posters frame early retirement as their actual motivator.

The thread’s real fault line isn’t whether material desire matters, but whether it’s the only legitimate kind of desire — posts #84, #92, and #98 argue over whether wanting to stop working (via FIRE) even counts as “material desire,” or whether it’s a separate craving for ease that happens to require money. A second, sharper split is over method: can external pressure (cutting off a NEET’s support, as in #6) substitute for desire that has to come from inside, as #12, #25, and #28 insist it can’t.

What the thread never spells out is why this matters publicly: yami baito, the shady gig-work scams mentioned in passing at #10, have become a genuine crime wave in Japan since around 2022, with anonymous social-media recruiters pulling underemployed or desperate young people into robbery and fraud rings — the dark mirror of the “material desire” the thread otherwise treats lightly.

It's tasty, but cheap? Not really

    Background and Key Points

Hokkaido is Japan’s northernmost prefecture, roughly 22% of the country’s land area but home to barely 4% of its population — under 5.2 million people scattered across a landmass the size of Austria. It was formally brought under Japanese administrative control only in 1869, when the Meiji government established the Kaitakushi (Hokkaido Development Commission) to settle land that had been Ainu territory for centuries; part of that early settlement effort literally ran on penal labor, which is the root of the “penal colony” jab in the thread. The cockroach-free reputation traces to climate, not hygiene: the Blattella germanica (“chabuya”) common on Honshu can’t sustain outdoor populations through Hokkaido’s subzero winters, and unlike the rest of Japan, Hokkaido has no tsuyu rainy season, so the humidity roaches need never really arrives. The bears posters keep citing are higuma — Ezo brown bears, a larger subspecies than the Asian black bears found on Honshu — and sightings near Sapporo have genuinely risen in recent years as the prefecture’s hunter population ages and shrinks.

The thread’s real fault line isn’t climate versus bugs, it’s whether the “livable” claim can be generalized at all: one poster points out Sapporo to Hakodate is roughly the Tokyo-to-Nagoya distance, meaning snowfall, bear risk, and cost of living vary enormously within the prefecture itself. What’s missing entirely is any mention of Seicomart, the Hokkaido-founded convenience chain that actually outnumbers 7-Eleven in rural areas — undercutting the “no convenience stores” complaint posters never fact-checked.

    Re: #93
Then why are Lawson and FamilyMart doing great business running "jumbo portion" campaigns?

    Background and Key Points

7-Eleven has led Japan’s convenience-store market since 1974, with over 21,000 stores nationwide, and konbini bread items like curry pan (a deep-fried bun with curry filling, invented in the 1920s and a lunch-counter staple ever since) are a low-margin, high-volume category where manufacturers constantly trade off filling cost against shelf price. The “mini curry bread” that launched August 18, 2026 is a smaller-format entry, and it’s this shrinkage — part of a broader wave of Japanese food makers quietly cutting portion sizes or package contents while holding the price steady, a practice with its own common nickname in Japan (steruthu kakaku, or “shrinkflation”) — that the cross-section photo captured, showing a hollow core inside the bread.

The thread didn’t converge on “shrinkflation is bad” as much as it split on whether this particular photo proves fraud or just normal bread physics. One camp treated the hollow center as proof 7-Eleven is skimping on filling to pad margins, pointing to Yamazaki’s curry bread as a denser, more honest comparison. The other camp pushed back that it’s explicitly labeled “mini,” that a flat-pressed shape naturally leaves an air pocket without changing the filling ratio, and that the hollow may even be what makes the crumb “fluffy” rather than dense — essentially arguing the visual is misleading, not the product.

What outside readers are likely to miss is that this isn’t really a story about one bread. It’s a recurring genre of complaint on Japanese boards about convenience-store QC, where each new “gotcha” photo (the thread itself references a prior 7-Eleven eclair controversy) functions as public shaming that occasionally forces reformulation — but posters here never mention 7-Eleven’s actual pricing or nutritional labeling for the mini item, so no one in the thread establishes whether the product is actually mislabeled or simply smaller than expected.

This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “[Photo] 7-Eleven Pretends It Learned Its Lesson, Then Screws Up Again lolololololololololololololololololol.”

  • Man Live-Tweets Solo Beach BBQ on 5ch — “The Charcoal Bag Text Is So Crisp, It’s Gotta Be Real”

A thread on 5ch’s “Live News G” board blew up after someone started live-posting their solo beach barbecue in real time. While some commenters cried “too lonely” or accused the poster of using AI-generated images, the thread eventually settled on “it’s real” once posters pointed out how crisp the text on the charcoal bag and the mont-bell logo looked. Throughout it all, the original poster kept insisting “it’s fun even alone,” and the thread spiraled into a debate over whether there was a car involved and whether beer was on the menu.

    93AnonymousAug 23, 2026 13:42
    Re: #92
That's just the chair backrest — this mix-up happens every single thread

    Background and Key Points

Man Live-Tweets Solo Beach BBQ on 5ch — “The Charcoal Bag Text Is So Crisp, It’s Gotta Be Real”

Solo camping and solo BBQ (“ソロキャン,” “ソロバーベキュー”) have been a steady trend on Japanese social media since roughly the mid-2010s, fueled partly by manga/anime like Yurucamp and partly by gear brands such as mont-bell — the Osaka-founded outdoor company whose bear-paw-shaped logo (mentioned in the thread) is a recognizable status marker among Japanese outdoor hobbyists. Group BBQ, by contrast, is the traditional social default in Japan, typically done with coworkers, family, or club members at riverside or beach sites in summer, which is why a lone diner grilling six sausages by a car reads as notable enough to screenshot. Japan’s strict zero-tolerance drunk-driving laws are also relevant background: a driver with any measurable blood alcohol faces an automatic license suspension, which is why the poster’s refusal to drink despite bringing beer-appropriate food wasn’t laziness but a real legal constraint.

The thread didn’t really split over whether solo BBQ is enjoyable — the OP held that line throughout — but over whether the images were authentic at all. Early replies leaned toward mockery (“too sad,” “just admit it’s AI”), and the pivot point was specifically the fine detail rendering: posters treated crisp text on the charcoal bag and a sharp mont-bell logo as de facto proof of a real photo, since AI image generators of the sort circulating on 5ch at the time were known for garbling small text and logos.

What outside readers will likely miss is that this “check the logo for AI tells” heuristic is a common, semi-standardized verification ritual on Japanese boards, not a one-off observation — and that the mont-bell mix-up in the final replies (mistaking a camp chair backrest for bear-branded gear) is flagged by a poster as a recurring joke in these threads, suggesting this is a template thread format rather than a first-time gag.

  • ‘No Kids, Life’s a Wreck’ — 5ch Splits Over the Emptiness That Hits After 50

It started with a post reading, “Once you’re past 50, you stop knowing what you’re even living for” — and spiraled into a debate on 5ch’s ‘anything goes’ live discussion board (Nanchan) about how having kids or not shapes the back half of life.

Posters who resented losing their freedom to child-rearing squared off against those dreading loneliness and emptiness in old age — and one self-described childless single with roughly ¥150 million (over $1 million) in assets chimed in with a confession of their own.

Once you get older, change stops happening on its own.
When you're young, stuff around you just keeps changing whether you like it or not, but once you're older you have to actively create change yourself — and you don't have the energy left for that.
If you've got kids, they force change into your life whether you want it or not.

The reason low birth rates aren't envied to begin with is that this generation watched what happened once their parents got married and realized it's already too late by then.
Marriage = happiness is an outdated equation.
Or rather, marriage itself might make you happy, but the kind of marriage a 'chii-gyuu' (this board's self-deprecating term for a dorky, unremarkable-looking guy) can actually land is just a 'weak man's marriage' — so yeah, staying single starts looking better.

Once you get older, you stop even having emotional reactions like 'not good with this' or 'this is hard.'
All that's left is emptiness that just keeps lingering.
The depression rate among elderly people living alone is seriously high, after all.

    Background and Key Points

5ch is Japan’s largest anonymous message-board network, the descendant of the notorious 2channel, and Nanchan is one of its “live” boards where fast-moving, throwaway threads like this one flare up and vanish within hours. The demographic backdrop is concrete, not abstract: Japan’s total fertility rate has sat around 1.2 for years, the lifetime unmarried rate has climbed sharply since the 1990s, and “kodokushi” — dying alone and being found much later — is a recognized enough phenomenon that the health ministry and local governments track it. The “yutori” generation referenced in the thread means people educated under Japan’s relaxed, pressure-reduced curriculum (roughly those born 1987–2004), now aging into their 40s in large numbers without having married or had children, which is why posters expect childless 50-somethings to become far more common.

The thread doesn’t really split on whether kids are good or bad in the abstract — everyone agrees raising them costs freedom and money. The actual fault line is whether that trade buys insurance against the specific dread of a static, emotionally flat old age, versus whether a mediocre “compromise” marriage just imports fresh misery into the household and reproduces the same unhappiness in a second generation.

What the thread skates past is the money side of its own ¥150 million example: Japan taxes inheritances steeply, up to 55% at the top bracket, and an estate with no legal heir and no will can ultimately escheat to the state — a mundane bureaucratic fact behind the poster’s throwaway “guess I’ll just spend it,” not a purely emotional choice.

    Background and Key Points

5ch (formerly 2channel) is Japan’s largest anonymous forum, and its “Nanademo Jikkyou” board — literally “live commentary, anything goes” — is built for real-time reaction threads: whatever is trending gets dumped in as it happens, with no topic requirement and no theme connecting one post to the next. Thread titles are typically abstract or poetic and bear no relation to the contents, which is why a thread titled after a “pink night bus” is actually a running feed of cat GIFs and food photos. The two news items that broke in mid-thread are both notable in their own right: Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara are Japan’s reigning World Champion figure-skating pair, a rare and closely watched partnership in a sport with a huge domestic following; Kashiwa Reysol, based in Chiba, is a J1 League club that has never been among the perennial powerhouses like Kashima Antlers or Urawa Reds, so a run to first place is genuine underdog news for domestic football fans.

What little friction exists in the thread isn’t over the news itself but over whether it belongs there at all — posts 48–53 are a tongue-in-cheek back-and-forth about whether the skating announcement has any relevance to a cat-and-food thread, resolved with a shrug rather than any real argument.

Readers should not mistake this for organized discussion: there’s no throughline, no consensus being reached, and references like “BatoGa” are inside jokes tied to specific Vtuber fandoms that even regular 5ch users may not recognize. Post 31’s “free bowl” plug is an ad, not organic content, which is why it drew immediate pushback.

  • Men Share Sit-Down Peeing Fail Stories — 5ch Rallies Behind: “Just Hold Your Junk Down”

Men on 5ch have been flooding a thread with stories about the discomfort of “sit-to-pee” (座りション, peeing while sitting on the toilet) — from the unpleasant feeling of their junk touching the bowl to accidentally soaking their pants when the stream got away from them.

Opinions split on whether you should just hold it down with your hand, or whether the real problem is that toilet bowls are simply too narrow — and some posters recommended dedicated guard products sold on Amazon.

When I've been holding it in so long my bladder's about to burst, the stream comes out with so much force it clears the rim guard and my pants down around my ankles get soaked.

Anyone who's messed up once just learns to point it down with their hand.
    10AnonymousAug 23, 2026 14:00
Why are you hard in the first place?
With a shallow bowl, it's the tip of your soft dick hanging down and touching the rim that's the real problem.
    11AnonymousAug 23, 2026 14:01
It happens sometimes when it comes out in a strong burst.
    12AnonymousAug 23, 2026 14:01
It's not built for a dick pointing straight down, so it's a structural flaw.

Splashback hits my dick pretty often.
So I adjust how hard I go as I pee.
    23AnonymousAug 23, 2026 14:03
This one time I felt really sick while out, ran into a bathroom, and peed with a totally limp dick — that's when it happened, and I panicked.
    25AnonymousAug 23, 2026 14:04
Everyone who sits down to pee must be small down there.
If you're big it touches the bowl and gets gross, so I never sit unless I'm actually pooping.
    26AnonymousAug 23, 2026 14:04
If I don't hold it with my hand it touches the seat, so this has never happened to me.

    Re: #112
No, we're talking about peeing here.

    Background and Key Points

Sit-to-pee (“座りション,” zasuri-shon) has been a recognized minority practice among Japanese men for years, driven largely by apartment living: thin walls in rental units make standing urination audible to neighbors below, and many households now ask men to sit to avoid cleaning splatter around the bowl. Surveys over the past decade have repeatedly found that a majority of Japanese men under 40 sit to pee at home, a figure often cited as surprising to Western readers used to standing being the near-universal default. The physical complaint in this thread — genitals brushing the porcelain, or a strong stream escaping the built-in splash guard — is a direct consequence of that shift: Japanese toilet bowls, especially compact ones in older apartments, business hotels, and rental units, are shaped and sized for seated defecation, not for accommodating a penis pointed downward into the bowl.

The thread’s actual disagreement isn’t over whether to sit — that’s assumed — but over the cause and fix. One camp says the fix is manual: hold it down with your hand, no exceptions. A second camp objects that this doesn’t solve anything, since contact with the bowl happens either way, and points instead to bowl geometry — the front of the seat is simply too narrow or shallow for anyone above-average in size, a structural failure rather than a technique failure. A third, smaller camp treats it as solved by product: silicone splash guards sold on Amazon.

What’s likely to surprise outside readers is less the mess and more the baseline: this is a routine, non-taboo topic of casual complaint among ordinary men, not an embarrassing outlier, because the practice itself is mainstream in Japan for reasons rooted in building acoustics and shared-space etiquette rather than personal preference.

  • One Piece Popularity Poll: Boa Hancock Falls Out of the Top 10 — 5ch: ‘Her Votes Got Cut in Half, LOL’

In One Piece’s latest popularity poll, the Empress Boa Hancock (31) dropped from 7th place last time to 12th, falling out of the top 10 entirely. Even more striking than the ranking drop is that her vote count fell to less than half of what it was last time — sparking a wide range of theories on 5ch about why her popularity has cratered.

    131AnonymousAug 23, 2026 16:09
    Re: #1

This probably did more to tank her popularity than the whole Uta thing.

    Background and Key Points

Boa Hancock is the “Pirate Empress” of Amazon Lily and, until the story dissolved the system entirely, one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea (Shichibukai) — pirates the World Government deputized to hunt other pirates. The numbers in the thread come from one of Weekly Shonen Jump’s periodic official One Piece character popularity polls, tallied in the hundreds of thousands of votes and printed in the manga itself; Hancock going from roughly 390,000 votes and 7th place to under 200,000 and 12th is an unusually steep single-poll collapse, not just a rank slip. Her last real appearance was the Blackbeard raid on Amazon Lily in chapter 1059 (around 2022) — since then Wano and Egghead have kept the story’s focus elsewhere, while rivals like Mihawk, Crocodile, and Buggy have kept popping up in smaller cameos.

The thread doesn’t converge on one cause. Posters trade between three explanations: her prolonged absence from the plot, her abrasive personality finally souring readers who’d tolerated it, and the specific optics of her losing decisively to Blackbeard on-panel, which one poster frames as more damaging than the earlier “Uta” backlash.

One correction worth flagging: a poster calls her “a woman like a Celestial Dragon,” the story’s slaveholding elite — but Hancock’s backstory is the opposite, she and her sisters were literally enslaved and branded by the Celestial Dragons as children, which is core to why she despises them. Readers unfamiliar with the manga could easily take that line at face value and get her position in the story’s hierarchy backwards.

  • Backlash Erupts Over ‘Rikuryu’ Pair’s Marriage Announcement, 5ch Split on Reaction

When figure skating pair “Rikuryu” announced their marriage, 5ch was filled less with congratulations than with questions about the timing of the announcement and how the media had been hyping the couple up.

Thread comments compared it to “Ohtani Harassment” (a term for relentless, forced media coverage of star athletes), while others voiced frustration that the pair had never openly confirmed they were dating — leaving the discussion split between support and criticism.

    1AnonymousAug 23, 2026 14:20

    4AnonymousAug 23, 2026 14:23
It's not the couple's fault, but if you're not even interested and people keep shoving 'Rikuryu Pair! Rikuryu Pair!' in your face, this is what happens, isn't it?
    5AnonymousAug 23, 2026 14:24
They botched the timing of this announcement, the branding is terrible.
If they'd been keeping it vague until now, they needed to start with an 'officially dating' phase first. Jumping straight from that to an engagement announcement just leaves everyone with that nagging 'wait, so you WERE together — why keep it vague??' feeling.
If it was going to be like this, they should've just announced it when they retired.

Same as the Ohtani-jealousy crowd. Some people complain about Ohtani too, like 'why does the news bother spending airtime on some random athlete?'

    Re: #109
    Exactly, you get it.
Just like with 'Ohtani Harassment,' the vast majority of ordinary people have zero interest in figure skating.

    Background and Key Points

Backlash Erupts Over ‘Rikuryu’ Pair’s Marriage Announcement, 5ch Split on Reaction

“Rikuryu” is the nickname for a Japanese pairs figure skating duo, formed by combining parts of each skater’s name — a common practice in Japan for celebrity couples and sports partnerships. Pairs skating itself is a niche discipline in Japan compared to singles skating, but this duo drew unusually large mainstream attention, reportedly even generating higher TV ratings than baseball or soccer broadcasts, and was nominated for the year’s Buzzword of the Year award — a sign of just how far their fame spread beyond the sport itself. That mainstream crossover is central to the backlash: Japanese media has a well-documented pattern of manufacturing “booms” around marketable athletes, and posters explicitly likened this to “Ohtani Harassment,” the term for the fatigue and resentment that builds when a star is covered relentlessly regardless of actual public interest.

The thread didn’t split over the marriage itself — congratulations were common — but over how it was announced. Critics argued the pair had spent years deflecting questions about their relationship with noncommittal answers, then jumped straight to a marriage announcement without ever confirming they were a couple, which felt manipulative or poorly handled from a publicity standpoint. Others pushed back that this was simply ordinary media overexposure translating into ordinary anti-fan resentment, unrelated to anything the couple did.

What outside readers likely miss is that this isn’t really about the couple’s conduct at all — it’s a recurring Japanese media-criticism script (seen with Ohtani and other crossover stars) where saturation coverage itself, not the subject, generates the backlash. The thread also never engages with why pairs skaters conventionally stay vague about relationships: partners training and performing intimately together for years routinely fuel dating rumors, so ambiguity is often a deliberate, standard practice in the sport rather than unique evasiveness from this pair.

  • Fake “Hololive Fan” Salary-Brag Copypasta Hits 5ch — Viewers Call It “Just Trolling”

On a Sunday-afternoon 5ch livestream-commentary thread, someone dropped a “salary brag” copypasta posing as a “Hololis” (5ch slang for a diehard Hololive fan). It rattled off some flashy numbers — a ¥1.4 million take-home bonus, a ¥780,000 take-home monthly salary, and ¥1.18 million a week from investing — but the thread’s reaction was lukewarm, with posts like “turns out Hololive fans are just trolling, huh.”

Right after that, someone suggested the person behind this kind of copypasta might be the same poster who’d spammed 38 self-replies talking to themselves in another thread — and the conversation spiraled off in an unexpected direction.

Hasn't the original Bocchi the Rock! (by creator Aki Hamaji) gone quiet on the anime front and started fading?
This version of Bocchi the Rock is way better

Sunday at the "tousuko" board (the thread's in-joke nickname) 🏡…

Hololive-stan A: "Check out my bonus, huh? And I've got kids too." (¥1.4 million take-home bonus)
Hololive-stan B: "Huh? My salary's way more impressive, scrub." (¥780,000 take-home monthly salary)
Hololive-stan C: "I live off investment income, sorry for being on a whole different level, plebs lol" (¥1.18 million a week from investing)

    Me: "Whoa… that's a high-level battle huh…"

Nijisanji-pig (mirrors "Holo-pig" as a jab at Nijisanji fans): "Nijisanji's STOCK PRICE! Their PROFITS! Look at the Holo-pigs' faces!"

    Re: #138
What do you mean "code word," you jerk

    Background and Key Points

Hololive and Nijisanji are Japan’s two dominant VTuber agencies, and both of their parent companies — Cover Corp and Anycolor — went public on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 2022. That listing is why “stock price” and “profits” function as actual bragging rights for Nijisanji fans: they’re pointing at a real, checkable number on a ticker, not a personal claim. “Holo-pig” and “Nijisanji-pig” are 5ch’s mirrored insults for each fandom’s most obsessive posters, and “salary-brag copypasta” is a long-running genre on Japanese boards where someone posts an exaggerated income boast, almost always as parody rather than a real disclosure — the ¥1.4 million bonus, ¥780,000 salary, and ¥1.18 million weekly investment income here read as stock comedic beats, not data.

The thread didn’t actually split over whether Hololive or Nijisanji is “better.” The consensus formed quickly and in one direction: the copypasta was dismissed as an obvious troll, and posters used it to make a specific, narrower point — that Hololive fans, when needled about money, reach for personal wealth flexes, while Nijisanji fans reach for the company’s stock price and earnings instead of praising their own talents. The mild disagreement, such as it was, was over whether that difference says something meaningful about fan culture or is just noise from one bored poster who’d also been spamming self-replies elsewhere.

What’s easy to miss is that “flex about the company” isn’t actually a compliment to Nijisanji’s talents either — the thread itself concedes that Nijisanji fans “can’t” brag about the performers, only the balance sheet.
