  • Honda to Wirelessly Charge EVs While Driving — 5ch: ‘Sounds Like Crazy EMF, Better Stock Up on Tin Foil’

Honda R&D and Taisei Corporation announced that they have jointly developed a system to wirelessly charge electric vehicles (EVs) from the road while they are in motion. Transmission devices embedded in the road surface send power to EVs fitted with receiving devices as they drive over them, and the companies plan to begin field trials on expressways from fiscal year 2027 onward. The goal is to help overcome the short driving range and lack of charging infrastructure that have been holding back EV adoption, but on 5ch threads, commenters raised concerns one after another about low transmission efficiency, the cost of road construction, and the extra power generation that would be required. At the same time, there were plenty of joking comments comparing it to overhead-wire systems or trolleybuses, and poking fun at fears of electromagnetic radiation, with opinions split over just how realistic the technology actually is.

On the 5th, Honda announced it had jointly developed a system with Taisei Corporation to charge electric vehicles (EVs) while they’re driving. By wirelessly supplying power from transmission devices embedded in the road, the system aims to make long-distance driving viable. Field trials on expressways will begin from fiscal year 2027 onward.

Driving-range limitations and the buildout of charging equipment remain key obstacles to EV adoption. Wirelessly charging EVs as they drive is meant to reduce how often drivers need to stop at charging points, improving convenience.

Honda R&D, Honda’s research and development subsidiary, developed the receiving device fitted to the EV and the transmission device embedded in the road. Taisei Corporation developed the road design and power-supply system, while its subsidiary Taisei Rotec is handling the road construction method.

With an internal combustion engine, torque (the force that moves the car) only builds up once the engine's RPM rises. But because of how the motors used in EVs work, maximum torque comes on instantly right from a standstill.
The flip side is excellent acceleration, but there are plenty of downsides too — fuel/energy efficiency, controllability on slippery roads, tire wear, and so on.
On uphills, this torque characteristic backfires: the motor has to haul the car's weight up the slope, so power consumption spikes all at once.
    113AnonymousOct 5, 2026 20:33
    Re: #107
That's basically just the reason some Prius out there turns into a 'missile' (runaway acceleration incidents).

Smartphone batteries degrade a ton if you use the phone while it's charging — I wonder if that's going to be a problem here too?
    120AnonymousOct 5, 2026 20:36
    Re: #112
On recent phones, while charging, the charger powers both the battery charging and the device itself — the device isn't actually running off the battery during that time.
    115AnonymousOct 5, 2026 20:35
Physically speaking, wireless power transmission is still only barely at the stage of beaming high energy focused into a narrow area — like the Satellite Cannon or the Impulse Gundam in Gundam (anime superweapons that fire concentrated energy beams).

If you want to pull off something like 'you get charged just by driving through this bypass section,' that's basically the Cyclops system (another Gundam superweapon, but one that blasts a wide area).
    124AnonymousOct 5, 2026 20:38
    Re: #115
So what you'd need is some kind of medium that can contain and carry a high-output discharge while charging on the move.
    139AnonymousOct 5, 2026 20:45
Transmission efficiency is going to be terrible, so the load on power plants will be huge.
That means electricity bills go up, and they'll end up building nuclear plants like crazy.

Is Honda secretly an anti-Japan company or something?

Apparently if 'quantum batteries' ever become real, the theory is that the bigger the capacity, the faster they charge — and even small ones would charge in way under a second, basically instantly, with incredibly high safety and durability to boot.
If that actually happens, it'd top even solid-state batteries — gas cars would be wiped out completely, and smartphones would barely degrade at all, so you could just buy one great high-performance phone outright for around 300,000 yen and use it for years — the cost-to-performance would be insane.

Not many people know how things actually went for Honda after they went all-in on EVs.
    So let's talk about it.

Honda named the EV it sells in China "Ye" (燁) — and that drew backlash, with people saying "Fire under a flower? You trying to burn China down?" (the character combines "brilliant/splendor" with "fire," which read as an inauspicious pun to Chinese buyers).
On top of that, the EV had pointlessly great cornering performance that nobody driving mountain roads actually needed, got crushed by Chinese EVs on driver-assist and IT features, and cost over 1 million yen more.
    It bombed, spectacularly.

Forget all this, just hurry up and make a Japan-made battery already lmao

Background and Key Points of This Topic

This technology is called “dynamic wireless power transfer” — a method that supplies power to EVs from the road while they’re actually driving, without stopping, unlike conventional charging-stand setups. The announcement only confirms that Honda and Taisei Corporation jointly developed the system and plan to begin field trials on expressways from fiscal year 2027 onward; it does not mean transmission devices have been decided for installation on roads nationwide. The thread’s disagreement centered mainly on estimates of transmission efficiency and cost — some pointed out that wireless power transfer tends to lose more energy due to distance and positioning gaps, and that securing enough electricity would require building more nuclear plants, while others compared it to overhead-wire systems and trolleybuses and said “there’s nothing new here.” Honda’s EV “Ye” has reportedly struggled in the Chinese market, and this history of distrust toward Honda’s EV strategy itself appears to be part of the backdrop to the reaction.

  • Misato Ugaki tells people bad at small talk: “Weather talk can carry you 30 minutes” — 5ch: “That’s over in 2 minutes”

Freelance announcer Misato Ugaki shared her small-talk tips on the YouTube show “YOUTRUST Studio” alongside comedian Nobuko, advising people who struggle with first meetings that “talking about the weather can carry you for 30 minutes.” Nobuko agreed, saying “you can tell in one exchange if someone doesn’t want to talk,” and the two explained their approach of reading the other person’s mood as they go. Reactions on 5ch were mixed: some praised the practicality of weather talk, while others doubted its effectiveness, saying it “runs out in two minutes” or “comes across as a desperate last resort.”

    Mon, Oct 5, 10:30 PM

Nobuko of the comedy trio “Party-chan” and freelance announcer Misato Ugaki appeared on the YouTube channel “YOUTRUST Studio” in an episode posted on the 5th, where they talked about their tips for small talk.

Responding to a viewer’s concern about being bad at small talk with people they’re meeting for the first time, both Nobuko and Ugaki said they’re actually good at it. “I just do it without thinking,” Ugaki said. She added, “If the other person seems to dislike it I’ll stop, but basically I just talk to them a lot,” to which Nobuko agreed, “You can tell in one exchange if someone doesn’t want to talk.” Ugaki further explained, “If I sense that this person wants to focus right now, I’ll go quiet too.”

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Misato Ugaki and Nobuko’s advice touched on the very relatable topic of how to get through the awkwardness of meeting someone for the first time, and it drew a wide range of reactions in the thread. Weather talk is a classic, inoffensive go-to topic, but opinions split between those who saw it as “a desperate fallback once you’ve run out of things to say” and those who viewed it as “a handy opening that can lead into other topics.” Some commenters cited concrete real-life situations where small talk is unavoidable, like waiting for a meeting to start or sharing a cab, framing the ability to make small talk not simply as a matter of conversational skill but as something shaped by the situation and one’s genuine interest in the other person. The view that there’s no need to fear silence also stood out, reflecting a perspective that treats small talk as a kind of social ritual.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geisoku Sokuho+) thread “Misato Ugaki advises people who are bad at “small talk”… also suggests topics: “Isn’t talking about the weather fine? That can carry you 30 minutes”.”

  • Jobless Reincarnation’s Original Author Under Fire Too — 5ch: “It’s Messed Up That the Panty Theft Got a Pass”

Popular VTuber Pekora sparked a stir when she expressed outrage while watching the anime “Jobless Reincarnation,” reacting angrily to the infidelity scene involving the protagonist’s father, Paul — and the backlash spread all the way to the original author. On 5ch threads, while Paul’s affair kept getting slammed, commenters repeatedly questioned why almost nobody calls out protagonist Rudeus himself for his own past of stealing heroine Roxy’s underwear. Posters also pointed to the deep-rooted ethics typical of the “Narou-style” isekai genre, and argued that excessive fan defense is actually fueling the backlash rather than calming it. In the end, opinions never converged.

He's supposed to be a modern person though — it's pretty messed up if his morals are stuck at the same level as some ancient work of fiction…

Background and Key Points of the Debate

“Jobless Reincarnation” has been known since it first aired as a show that invites scrutiny over its ethics, thanks to elements like the protagonist’s past as a NEET shut-in in his previous life, or the storyline where the heroine’s underwear gets treated as a “sacred relic.” This time, an outside perspective — a VTuber’s live reaction — reignited a long-simmering point about an internal contradiction: the father’s affair gets slammed, while the protagonist’s own past misdeeds get a pass. The thread was split over whether to treat this criticism as a legitimate question about the story’s internal consistency, or as an overreaction to a work of fiction. There were also comments pointing to a pattern seen in other past franchise and VTuber controversies — where overly aggressive fan defense ends up turning even bystanders against them and spreading the backlash further — making this a debate that goes beyond just one series.

  • Leaked Audio of Shouting at JRA Horse Owners’ Association Exec Meeting Has 5ch Cracking: ‘Is This a Dacho Club Skit?’ (Dacho Club: a Japanese comedy trio famous for chaotic shoving-and-shouting routines)

Gendai Business reported obtaining audio from a top-level executive meeting of the “Umashukai” (Horse Owners’ Association), the organization representing owners in Japan’s central horse racing. During the meeting, shouts like “Get outside, you!” were reportedly flying around — a rare glimpse into dealings normally hidden behind closed doors. On 5ch, discussion focused less on the article itself and more on what horse owners are actually like as people, with opinions split over whether to call them “celebrities” or something closer to “thugs.” Many posts also took a fact-checking angle, naming real wealthy individuals and politicians to debate who’s actually involved in horse racing.

What happened behind closed doors among the celebrities? Audio obtained — shouting at a top-level executive meeting of the JRA’s “Horse Owners’ Association”: “Get outside, you!”

    “Get outside! Right now, you!”

A sudden shout rang out across the meeting room. The voice belonged to a top executive of the horse owners’ association for Japan’s central horse racing.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Horse ownership is restricted to wealthy individuals who meet the JRA’s screening criteria, and owners have traditionally been portrayed with a ‘distinguished gentleman’ image. Within the thread, however, opinions about owners’ conduct leaned heavily toward ‘thugs’ and ‘rough types,’ making the gap between image and reality a central point of debate. There was also an easily overlooked point about the word ‘celebrity’ itself — some posters noted it properly refers to famous people rather than simply the wealthy, which split how readers interpreted the article’s headline in the first place. It should also be noted that the original article doesn’t specify exactly how the audio leaked or came to be used for the report, so details about who was shouting and the full context remain unconfirmed.

  • Fukuoka Submits Petition to Become Japan’s ‘Secondary Capital’ — 5ch: ‘That’s Less a Backup, More a Front-Line Base’

On September 5, Fukuoka Governor Seitaro Hattori, together with the mayors of Fukuoka City and Kitakyushu City, submitted a petition to the government seeking designation as a “secondary capital” — a stand-in for the capital’s functions in the event of a disaster. The petition was received by the minister in charge of promoting secondary capital development. The secondary capital concept gained real momentum as an extension of the “Osaka Metropolis Plan” championed by the Osaka Ishin no Kai, and besides Fukuoka, several other municipalities — including Hokkaido, Aichi, and Hiroshima — have also put themselves forward as candidates. On 5ch, the thread ranged from whether Fukuoka is actually suitable from a disaster-preparedness standpoint, to comparisons with other candidate regions like Osaka.

On the “secondary capital” concept, which would back up Tokyo’s capital functions during a disaster or other emergency:

On September 5, Fukuoka Governor Hattori and others submitted a petition to the government calling for the prefecture to be designated the secondary capital.

On the 5th, three officials — Fukuoka Governor Hattori, Fukuoka City Mayor Takashima, and Kitakyushu City Mayor Takeuchi — appeared together at the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications in Tokyo. The three jointly handed Minister Fujii, who oversees secondary capital development promotion, a petition calling for realizing “Fukuoka Prefecture as secondary capital.”

    Forgetting about typhoons, are we?

Background and Key Points of This Debate

“Secondary capital” isn’t a legally defined status — it’s still at the stage where multiple municipalities are voluntarily putting themselves forward as backup locations for capital functions. The debate gained real traction as an extension of the “Osaka Metropolis Plan” championed by Osaka Ishin no Kai, and besides Fukuoka, candidates include Hokkaido, Aichi, Hiroshima, and Miyagi, though there’s no unified selection criteria. The thread split between those arguing priority should go to regions with lower risk from major disasters like the Nankai Trough earthquake, and those countering that Kyushu itself faces earthquake, volcanic, and typhoon risks — a question that really calls for expert disaster-risk assessment rather than being settled by internet impressions alone.

  • Chiikawa Movie Box Office Tops ¥17.1 Billion, On Pace to Beat One Piece — 5ch: ‘Bonus Freebies Cheapened the Record’

The film “Chiikawa: Secret of the Mermaid Island” has surpassed 11.76 million admissions and ¥17.17 billion in box office revenue in its first 73 days. That’s roughly the same pace “ONE PIECE FILM RED” (released 2022) had hit by its own 73rd day, putting a ¥20 billion-plus finish within reach if the trend holds. On 5ch, opinions split: some argued the record is being inflated by repeat viewers chasing exclusive bonus giveaways, while others countered that rewatching a film for its own merits is a different thing entirely from buying multiple copies of the same CD.

Chiikawa tops ¥17.1 billion at the box office, matching ONE PIECE FILM RED’s pace

The anime film “Chiikawa: Secret of the Mermaid Island” (released July 24) has surpassed 11.76 million admissions and ¥17.17 billion in revenue over its first 73 days in theaters.

“ONE PIECE FILM RED” (2022), which finished its run with ¥20.34 billion total, had earned ¥17,100,912,060 by its 72nd day — meaning Chiikawa is keeping pace with it almost exactly.

Conan's its own monster though — cheap, corner-cutting animation, no bonus gimmicks at all, and it still rakes in around ¥10 billion like clockwork every single year.

Background and key points of this discussion

In box-office showdowns, whether a film uses attendance bonuses (multiple different giveaways designed to lure fans into seeing it more than once) tends to become a hot topic. It’s often compared to the practice of buying multiple copies of the same CD, but some point out the comparison doesn’t quite hold — a movie can offer a fresh experience on every rewatch in a way a CD can’t. Chiikawa is set to roll out new bonus items around October 10, so it’s worth noting that weekend attendance figures are likely to reflect a wave of bonus-chasing repeat viewers. For comparison, “ONE PIECE FILM RED” finished its theatrical run at ¥20.34 billion — whether Chiikawa can keep matching that pace will likely hinge on the timing of future bonus drops and how long it stays in theaters.

At its peak, JNR’s network spanned roughly 20,000 km of track, and under the catchphrase “Great Journey: 20,000 Km Challenge,” a whole style of travel grew up around trying to ride every single line. The thread ranged from the growing number of fans who never got to experience a sleeper train or a dining car, to nostalgia for the express trains and local lines that vanished around privatization, all the way to present-day gripes that the Hokuriku Shinkansen extension and the revised Seishun 18 Ticket rules have made using conventional lines even more of a hassle.

Getting to ride the Hokutosei sleeper during my loop around Hokkaido was the one saving grace.
My parents were from the Niigata countryside, but we weren't well-off when I was a kid — couldn't even snag reserved seats, let alone set foot in the dining car.

I rode one, but only a daytime run.

Gotta conquer all ~20,000 km of the old JNR network before it's all abandoned.

Apparently more and more people have never ridden a sleeper train — how come?

Using an old Shinkaisoku (rapid service) train as a sleeper limited express feels like it's missing the point somehow.

Nobuhiko Obayashi's film Haishi ("The Deserted City") has rare footage of Chikugo-Yanagawa Station on the JNR Saga Line not long before it was shut down.
The Chikugogawa Shōkōbashi — the JNR Saga Line's lift bridge where the track itself rises up like an elevator — is now a walking path you can cross on foot.
Ask the staff nicely and they'll even raise it for you.
    51AnonymousOct 5, 2026 22:47
Even before that, the Hokuriku Shinkansen extension tore the conventional lines to shreds.
If things get made worse still, you won't even have options left to choose between.
All that's left is "well, it's a bit cheaper, so I guess I'll use it" when heading out somewhere far.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Great Journey: 20,000 Km Challenge” was a catchphrase referring to the roughly 20,000 km of track JNR operated at its peak, and at the time, riding every single line was talked up as a goal for railway fans. In the thread, that figure gets cited again and again, and the conversation centers on nostalgia for the trains, services, and rolling stock — sleeper cars, dining cars, express-type diesel railcars — that disappeared around the time of privatization. Where opinion split was over a jab aimed at “the generation that used to say cars made trains unnecessary,” with some pointing out that the old push for efficiency leads in a straight line to today’s complaints about line closures and service cuts. One point readers could easily get wrong is the Amarube story: the current Amarube Bridge is a concrete structure rebuilt in 2010, so from today’s train windows you can no longer actually see the famous old steel trestle itself. Also, since 2024 the rules around the Seishun 18 Ticket’s valid days and split usage have changed, and the thread’s complaints are grounded in that real policy change.

  • Shioi Kento Dribbles Instead of Passing on the Counter: “Had the Same Issue Last Match Too”

In the October 5 Kirin Cup final, Japan’s national team beat New Zealand 2-1. In the 85th minute, substitute forward Kento Shioi (Wolfsburg) won the ball in a counterattacking situation, drove forward on the dribble himself, and tried to take on a defender instead of passing to Keito Nakamura, who was making an unmarked run — only to lose the ball. On 5ch’s Geisupo Sokuho+ (entertainment/sports news) board, criticism piled up (“He did the exact same thing last match,” “He’s got tunnel vision”), while other posters defended him (“He’s still only 21, plenty of room to grow,” “He scored against Uruguay thanks to Ueda”), and a fair number of posts also questioned manager Hajime Moriyasu’s decision to keep using him at all.

[Oct. 5 Kirin Cup Final: Japan 2-1 New Zealand, National Stadium]

It was a prime counterattacking chance. In the 85th minute, as New Zealand launched a long throw-in and tried to link up the second ball, substitute Japan forward Kento Shioi (Wolfsburg) cut it out. He drove forward on the dribble, crossed the halfway line, and carried the ball all the way up near the opponent’s penalty area.

Midfielder Keito Nakamura had made an unmarked run up the left side, but Shioi never released the pass and was dispossessed. Japan pressed again and Nakamura picked up the loose ball, sparking a second wave of attack — but it was the kind of counter where a pass to Nakamura very likely would have produced a clear scoring chance.

Can't expect anything from a guy who plays a backward pass on a ball like that
I thought ego was supposed to be his whole selling point, and that really put me off

Background and Key Points of This Topic

This moment occurred in the October 5 Kirin Cup final. Since it’s a friendly tournament, manager Hajime Moriyasu tends to use squad players and those he wants to test out, and Shioi has come on as a substitute multiple times during this tournament. The thread’s claim that “the same thing happened last match too” appears to refer to his choice of play in the sequence that led to the goal against Uruguay. That said, this particular incident was just a single moment in the 85th minute, and whether a pass would have actually created a clear chance remains pure speculation after the fact. Those defending him point to his age — just 21, with plenty of room to grow — and his role in the Uruguay goal, while critics frame his repeated tunnel vision as a “bad habit.” The fact that opinion split sharply down the middle over the very same play is what characterizes this thread.

*This article is an excerpt and summary based on the 5ch (Geisupo Sokuho+) thread “[Soccer] Kento Shioi takes on a defender himself instead of passing on a counterattack chance: “That kind of thing happened last match too, so it’s something to work on”.”

  • 82-Year-Old Tiger Jeet Singh to Guest at Megumi Kudo’s 40th Anniversary Show

After the announcement, 5ch lit up with talk of Singh’s real-life gentlemanly side once he’s out of the ring, comparisons to fellow wrestlers from his generation who’ve since passed away, and plain astonishment that he’s still at it at 82.

It’s been announced that “the Indian Madman” Tiger Jeet Singh (82) will make a guest appearance at “Jado-hime Densetsu,” the 40th-anniversary event (the 17th, at Tokyo’s Yoyogi National Gymnasium Annex) for Zero1 GM Megumi Kudo (57), who made her name as FMW’s “Heel Princess.”

A legendary villain famous for his brutal clashes with the two titans Antonio Inoki and Giant Baba, Singh first appeared in FMW in June 1992, feuding with heel wrestler Atsushi Onita. At the time, Kudo — then FMW’s top female star — worked in the same promotion’s ring as him.

Singh, together with his son and former WWE Superstar Tiger Ali Singh, posted a comment on Kudo’s YouTube channel, “Kudome Channel.” After announcing his trip to Japan with the words, “I’ve finally made up my mind. I can’t let the fans down,” he sent a message to the Heel Princess: “There’s only one reason we’re coming — to see you. You’re the best! You don’t have to be afraid of me. I’m not going to hurt you.”

    Background and Talking Points

Tiger Jeet Singh debuted with All Japan Pro Wrestling in 1965, building his career on the villainous “Madman” gimmick, best remembered for attacking Antonio Inoki and Giant Baba with foreign objects. He joined FMW in 1992, and his feud with heel wrestler Atsushi Onita helped define an era for the promotion. In the thread, some posters mistook him for Iranian, but he’s actually Indo-Canadian, and a respected figure back home known for philanthropy, including funding school construction. His trademark saber was rigged for safety with a protected tip, and multiple posters noted he’s a genuine gentleman once he’s out of the ring — suggesting his heel persona was a thoroughly committed act. Megumi Kudo, who built her career as FMW’s top female star, now serves as Zero1’s GM, and this guest announcement for her 40th-anniversary show shows just how far her connections reach after such a long career.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports Express+) thread “[Pro Wrestling] Madman Tiger Jeet Singh (82) to Join Megumi Kudo’s 40th Anniversary Event — “There’s Only One Reason: To See You”.”

  • 70% of Pharmacists Report Customer Harassment — Health Ministry Says They Can Refuse Abusive Demands

A news report on pharmacists struggling with unreasonable behavior from patients was picked up by 5ch’s News Express+ board. Pharmacists are bound by a “duty to fill prescriptions,” which bars them from refusing to dispense medication without a legitimate reason — reportedly making it hard for them to push back firmly. The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has indicated that demands amounting to customer harassment (“kasuhara”) can be refused, and moves toward addressing the issue are now emerging. The thread showed sympathy for pharmacists, but also plenty of complaints about long wait times and poor customer service, as well as doubts about pharmacy staffing levels — with opinions split over how the term “customer harassment” is being used.

There has been a string of cases where pharmacists struggle to deal with patients who make unreasonable demands or say abusive things over prescriptions. This is believed to stem from the fact that pharmacists are bound by a “duty to fill prescriptions,” which makes it hard for them to take a firm stand.

In response, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has begun taking steps toward a solution, including stating that demands which amount to “customer harassment” can be refused.

In-hospital dispensing is so much easier
you get your meds right away and can just leave

They just tell you "your medicine's ready" and you pick it up at checkout and walk out

Sure, customer harassment happens, but there are just as many staff with terrible attitudes toward customers
Service workers got themselves a shield by coining the term "kasuhara" (customer harassment) — so customers are just supposed to swallow their frustration?

There really is — there's a pharmacy near my place
I faxed over my prescription and they hadn't done anything with it, then they casually told me they'd accidentally sent my prescription slip back with my stuff and asked me to bring it back, and on top of that they scolded me for forgetting my medication notebook (the booklet that tracks your prescription history). Even though it's right by my house, I will never go there again

    >"I already explained it to the doctor, why do I have to go over the same thing again?!"

    I get the feeling
And honestly, making you talk about your condition out loud with other customers right there is just crazy on the pharmacist's part

But once I learned pharmacists ask the same things again as a double-check on whether the doctor made a mistake, I gave up complaining about it

I think pharmacists get looked down on because there are too many bottom-tier private pharmacy schools ("F-rank" schools, slang for the lowest-tier universities)

Private pharmacy programs are where science-track kids who couldn't keep up with advanced calculus end up getting funneled

Doctors don't get disrespected like that, because even the lowest-ranked private medical school is harder to get into than the science programs at "MARCH" (a group of mid-tier private Tokyo universities)

Pharmacies in front of big hospitals, or near a pediatric or ENT clinic

It's not that they don't know generics exist
Generics are made by all sorts of different companies, so there's no way to know which company's generic the patient's pharmacy happens to stock
It could be the brand-name original, or it could be someone's generic
These days a lot of outside prescriptions are written using the generic drug name specifically so the pharmacy doesn't have to check back every time

Pharmacies aren't staffed only by pharmacists, you know
The reception staff probably aren't pharmacists
It's only the ones who bring out your medicine and explain it who actually are

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Under Japan’s Pharmacist Act, pharmacists are bound by a “duty to fill prescriptions” that bars them from refusing to dispense medication without a legitimate reason — a legal position that makes it hard for them to push back against unreasonable demands. Responding to this reporting, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare indicated that demands amounting to harassment — abusive language, being forced to repeat the same explanation over and over, and the like — fall outside that duty and can be refused. On the thread, alongside sympathy for pharmacists and criticism of “customer harassment,” there was also persistent frustration over long wait times, inconsistent service between pharmacists, and pharmacy staff attitudes in general — with some pushing back that the term “kasuhara” (customer harassment) risks shutting down even legitimate customer complaints. One point the original article glosses over, worth flagging to avoid confusion, is that this “duty to fill prescriptions” is a rule specific to pharmacists and doesn’t apply to doctors in the same way.
