  • Retail Investors’ Yen-Selling Hits ¥4.4 Trillion in July as Rising Yen Sparks Forced-Liquidation Fears

As the yen climbs to its highest level in six months, Japanese retail investors have been piling into short-yen positions through FX (margin foreign exchange trading). According to data from the Financial Futures Association of Japan and the Tokyo Financial Exchange, retail investors’ net short-yen position recently stood at ¥3.61 trillion, after hitting ¥4.41 trillion in July — the highest level since 2015. If the yen keeps strengthening against expectations, insufficient margin could trigger forced liquidations and deepen losses. In a 5ch thread, users debated the difference between this kind of trading and NISA tax-free investing, along with predictions for where the dollar-yen rate is headed next.

Betting Against the Trend: Retail Investors Boost Yen-Selling as Currency Hits Six-Month High

(Bloomberg): Japanese retail investors are taking a contrarian stance against the yen’s rapid rise. As the currency strengthens against the dollar to its highest level in six months, they’ve been increasing their short-yen positions.

According to a Bloomberg analysis of Financial Futures Association of Japan and Tokyo Financial Exchange margin FX (foreign exchange margin trading) data, retail investors’ net short-yen position rose last week to an estimated ¥3.61 trillion, up from August. Bearish yen bets had reached ¥4.41 trillion in July, the highest level since 2015.

If the yen keeps strengthening, you'll probably take a temporary hit whether you're in an all-country index fund or Japanese stocks — but NISA investing is meant to be held for like 20 years anyway.
It's built on the premise that the world keeps inflating and stock prices eventually hit new highs.
If you're going to panic-sell over this, you shouldn't have started in the first place.
Of course, holding for 20 years doesn't guarantee you won't lose money either.

The biggest losers are the ones who panic-sell in a downturn and get cocky buying into an uptrend. The ones who can do the opposite are the ones who win at stocks. If you're anxious, just hold. You can't make a level-headed call while you're in that headspace.

    Number of individual brokerage accounts:
    56.25 million, FYI.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

In Japan, retail margin FX trading is capped at a maximum leverage of 25x. If the market moves against a trader’s position and unrealized losses exceed their margin, brokers automatically close out the position — a “forced liquidation.” The confusion with NISA seen in the thread comes down to this difference in mechanics: NISA is a tax-free investment scheme for mutual funds and stocks, not margin trading, so the concept of forced liquidation doesn’t even apply to it. On where the yen is headed, some point to the US Treasury Secretary’s remarks and dollar-yen trends across past administrations to argue for a long-term direction, while others weave in political commentary — leaving no real consensus. How much retail FX positioning actually moves the broader market isn’t made clear in the original article either, so it’s worth not getting overly rattled by the size of the numbers alone.

  • VTuber Marriage and Childbirth Announcements Spark Controversy — 5ch: ‘Married Life and Childbirth Are Too Gross to Watch’

As more female VTubers announce relationships, marriages, and childbirths, a 5ch thread blew up over a coined term posted on note.com: the “stuffed-animal vagina phenomenon.” The phrase riffs on “stuffed-animal penis,” a jab at male idols whose real, physical existence undercuts their idealized image, and here describes the mixed feelings fans get when a VTuber who built her popularity by playing single later reveals a relationship or childbirth. The thread pitted defenders — who argued that hiding it wasn’t the real problem — against harsher critics who called the relationship itself a betrayal, spiraling into a debate over what fans actually want from VTubers.

Lately we’re seeing more and more female VTubers announce their marriages and childbirths, showered with congratulations. But hold on a second — is that really something we can just wave off as “wonderful news”?

Something about that doesn’t sit right.

Let me be clear: VTubers who are upfront with their listeners day-to-day about having a boyfriend, dating, or getting married are the exception. But they’re a small minority. Most of them know full well there’s no upside to disclosing that stuff, so they sell us the fantasy of “I don’t have a boyfriend” and “you, the listener, come first” — and exploit us for it.

    158AnonymousSep 9, 2026 21:01
    Re: #154
    GRAAAAAGH! 💢

    Background and Key Points

The original term, “stuffed-animal penis,” mocks male idols or characters who perform behind a hidden face while actually being flesh-and-blood humans; applying that idea to female VTubers gave rise to the “stuffed-animal vagina phenomenon.” The VTuber industry partly sells a pseudo-romantic relationship built on the premise of “no boyfriend” and “you, the listener, come first,” and that business model frequently collides with performers’ personal privacy. Commenters pointed to cases like Hayase Sou, who faced no backlash even after going public with a relationship, suggesting the real backlash isn’t against dating itself but against feeling like it was concealed. Meanwhile, much of the thread drifted into personal attacks tied to posters’ genders, which have been left out of this writeup. This kind of friction between fans and VTubers isn’t unique to this case — it reflects a structural tension found throughout idol culture more broadly.

  • BEYOOOOONDS Getting Attention from Johnny’s Fans Too — 5ch: ‘Reeks of Self-Promotion’

A post has gone up on 5ch’s Hello! Project board, complete with screenshots, claiming that posts from Hello! Project’s new group BEYOOOOONDS are drawing reactions from Johnny’s fans as well. The thread brings up how a group called “Moreremi” previously saw its profile grow after catching on with Johnny’s fans in a similar way, and opinion is split on whether this time’s reaction is happening naturally or is the work of promo accounts and marketers.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Moreremi” is cited as a Hello! Project-affiliated group whose profile is said to have grown in the past after catching the attention of Johnny’s fans, and that history is treated as background knowledge in the thread. The claim being discussed this time is that reactions to BEYOOOOONDS are spreading in a similar way — but there’s no evidence beyond a screenshot, and several posts openly question whether the reaction is even genuine, throwing around words like “self-promotion,” “marketers,” “bot script,” and “A-shizu” (apparently slang for a specific segment of Johnny’s fandom). In other words, the thread’s real point of contention isn’t whether BEYOOOOONDS has actually become popular, but the step before that: whether this “starting to get noticed” phenomenon is happening organically or is manufactured marketing. Because posts on 5ch are anonymous by nature, there’s no way for a third party to confirm whether these are genuinely Johnny’s fan accounts, so this article leaves that question open.

Nonaka, who serves as leader of Morning Musume ’25, shared an anecdote about Hello! Project trainee Meisa that sparked discussion on 5ch’s “Hello! Project” board. According to Nonaka, the normally friendly and outgoing Meisa hid behind her and trembled like a nervous puppy when she came face-to-face with Fukumura Sae, known as one of Morning Musume’s longest-serving leaders. While the thread lit up with fond reactions like “that’s rare” and “so cute,” others joked about Fukumura’s commanding presence, and some pointed out that Meisa’s shyness is just part of her personality and not necessarily a reaction to Fukumura specifically — leaving reactions divided.

Fukumura Sae is a veteran Morning Musume member known for her long tenure in the group, and she’s often described as someone whose juniors and trainees regard with a distinct sense of tension. Nonaka, the current leader of Morning Musume, also holds a mentoring role over the trainees. This latest anecdote spread as further proof of Fukumura’s “commanding presence.” Within the thread, many found it amusing to read Meisa’s shyness as a reaction to Fukumura specifically, while others pointed out that Meisa and those around her have long described her as someone who gets shy depending on who she’s with, suggesting the story may have been exaggerated in the retelling — opinions were divided. Note that the thread also contained unverified rumors about specific members’ personal relationships, but since these could not be fact-checked, they have been excluded from this article.

On the “Detective Precure!” thread, fans buzzed about Arcana (Ruruka Moria) topping the Animage and Anime Dia magazine popularity polls in nearly every issue since June 2026. The fact that her “current obsession” entry on the character profile sheet is written inside the profile box sparked speculation that it was penned by the character herself in-universe, fueling excitement over the detail as evidence of her fixation on Crea (Éclair). Thread members also shared info on the earliest theatrical screenings and past collaboration campaigns.

In the museum episode she said 'I never fail' — but she had to steal the Makoto Jewel just to trade it back for Éclair's Makoto Jewel, and then claims 'it wasn't a failure' because some completely unrelated good deed happened to succeed? That logic feels shaky.

    Background and Key Points

Detective Precure is the newest entry in Toei Animation’s Precure franchise, airing in 2026. Animage and Anime Dia are both long-running anime magazines that run reader-voted popularity features in every issue — it’s easy to mistake the rankings for an official announcement from the production side, when they’re actually just tallies of reader surveys. The thread’s theory that the “current obsession” field on the character profile sheet was “written by the character herself” is likewise a fan interpretation drawn from the profile sheet’s formatting conventions, not an officially confirmed detail. As for the earliest theatrical screenings, it’s customary in past years for these to skip the usual admission-guest freebies and sell merchandise for a fee instead — and thread members expect that same format to be followed again this time.

  • Matsuyama Soapland and ‘Health’ Brothel Raided — ‘A Good Shop, Gone’: Ehime Police Ramp Up Red-Light District Crackdown

The operators of a soapland and a ‘health’ brothel in Taku-cho, Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture, were arrested by September 9th on suspicion of violating the Anti-Prostitution Law by providing a venue for prostitution to customers. Police say they are stepping up enforcement to clean up the city’s red-light district. In the thread, some pointed out that soaplands have long operated under the legal fiction of ‘providing a place for free love,’ others speculated about the real reason behind the raid, and opinions split over whether tougher enforcement is actually a good idea, given it could push more women into street solicitation and raise the risk of sexually transmitted infections.

The operators of two sex-industry establishments in Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture — a soapland and a ‘health’ brothel — were arrested by September 9th on suspicion of violating the Anti-Prostitution Law by providing a venue for prostitution. Police say they are stepping up enforcement to clean up the red-light district.

The raided establishments were a soapland and a ‘health’ shop located in Taku-cho, Matsuyama City.

In the soapland case, the person arrested on September 9th was a 68-year-old man who runs the sex-industry business and lives in Minamidoi-cho, Matsuyama City.

You're just assuming they're miserable, but they're doing it because they want to

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Soaplands are licensed under the Adult Entertainment Business Law as ‘private-room bathhouse businesses,’ and the sexual services provided inside have officially operated under the pretense of ‘free love between customer and employee.’ What the Anti-Prostitution Law actually bans is sexual intercourse in exchange for payment itself — an operator becomes subject to prosecution once they’re found to have ‘provided the venue’ for it. This structure hasn’t changed in decades, and as commenter #42 in the thread notes, the idea that soaplands ‘provide a place for free love’ as a legal fiction is common knowledge within the industry. At the same time, why exactly these two shops were singled out this time isn’t clear from the article alone, and the thread was full of speculation — ties to organized crime, employment of minors, kickbacks from scouts — none of which has been confirmed by reporting. Whether tougher enforcement leads to fewer brothels but more street solicitation and a higher risk of sexually transmitted infections is a long-running debate, and this thread saw the same arguments for and against play out once again.

Self-proclaimed short sleeper Daisuke Hori has kicked off a nonstop 7-day livestream. The broadcast drew 15,000 concurrent viewers right from the start, and 5channel’s Geinou/Sports News+ board lit up with real-time commentary. By the way, here are the rules:

    – The stream ends immediately the moment a clip appears.
    – No smart ring will be worn, since wearing one isn't part of my normal everyday routine.
    – There are daily training sessions with program participants, and since the methods of the sleep-improvement program can't be made public, there will be a few hours of stream downtime.
    – Bathing 6 times a day would mean being fully nude, so if that violates YouTube's terms, it won't be shown.

Also, note that commenting "go to sleep" counts as defamation and will result in legal action.

The real test'll be around 2am, that's when it gets interesting.
Wonder how many concurrent viewers he'll have by day 7?

    Background and points of debate

“Short sleeper” refers to a physical trait some people are born with that lets them function on very little sleep without ill effects; the claim that this can be acquired later through training is said to have little medical backing. This particular stunt is an attempt to demonstrate the truth of that claim via a continuous 7-day livestream, but the rules the organizers laid out — the stream ends the instant a clip surfaces, broadcasting stops during training sessions, and bathing happens six times a day — end up making it harder, not easier, for outside viewers to confirm whether he’s really staying awake. The bathing and training blocks becoming de facto black boxes was the central source of suspicion on the thread. Though not mentioned in the original article, prolonged sleep deprivation carries serious health risks, and Guinness World Records has stopped certifying related records for safety reasons. Seen in that light, viewers’ skepticism isn’t out of left field — it’s a continuation of the same authenticity disputes that have dogged similar “no-sleep challenge” stunts in the past.

  • Giants Cling to 3-Run Lead Over Chunichi as Late-Inning Bullpen Calls Steal the Spotlight — 5ch: ‘Just Like Tanishige Said’

This is the live-commentary thread for the Giants-Chunichi game at Tokyo Dome on the 9th. While Maru delivered results, Izumiguchi — who keeps getting called out for his low batting average with runners in scoring position — again failed to cash in on his chances. The Giants carried a 3-run lead into the late innings, and thread posters debated how to divide up the remaining bullpen arms, including whether to rest closers like Eight and Raidel for the next day’s game. After the final out, some reacted that commentator Motonobu Tanishige’s on-air read of the situation had come true.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This day’s Giants-Chunichi game at Tokyo Dome saw Maru deliver results early, while Izumiguchi — long criticized for his low batting average with runners in scoring position — continued to struggle in this game as well. With only a limited number of available pitchers in the late innings, the focus turned to whether go-to relievers like Eight and Raidel should be held back for the next day’s game, and opinions were split on whether the 9th inning should be treated as a save situation. After the game, some voices noted that TV commentator Motonobu Tanishige’s on-air prediction had ultimately proven correct. The original thread, titled ‘Acting Giants Manager,’ is the 130th installment of an ongoing series, and debates over pitcher usage have repeatedly come up in these live-commentary threads as the season winds down.

  • ‘Beast of Reincarnation’ Sales Figures Still Unannounced

Sales of Beast of Reincarnation, a completely new title that Game Freak spent roughly six years developing, have become a hot topic on 5ch after the company still hasn’t announced official sales figures even long after launch. The contrast with Capcom’s Onimusha, released around the same time and hitting one million units on day one, drew a string of comments in the thread pointing out that the game seems to be struggling. Posters also discussed the studio’s move away from Nintendo platforms to release on PlayStation, raised doubts about Game Freak’s abilities apart from Pokémon, and debated how the studio’s development resources should be spent.

If they want to make an AAA game, they should make a Pokémon game that's somewhere between full photorealism and something like the Ocarina of Time remake —
realistic backgrounds, characters in an in-between style, and 60 FPS.
If they have the tech, it should be doable.

Better than letting someone fester inside the company spreading poison —

and above all, it confronts them with reality in the clearest way possible.

Wasn't Drill Dozer ('どりるれろ') a Game Freak game too? I feel like that one got a decent amount of buzz.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Game Freak is best known as the studio behind the Pokémon series, but this title is one of the company’s rare completely original IPs, reportedly taking around six years to develop. Around materials said to have leaked in the past, speculation has circulated among fans that Pokémon’s profits aren’t being sufficiently returned to Game Freak — and some see this release as an attempt to secure an independent revenue stream through the studio’s own IP. Titles that don’t get an official sales-figure announcement after launch are, generally speaking, often ones that underperformed, and the contrast with Capcom’s Onimusha — released around the same time and touting a concrete figure of one million units sold on day one — sharpened reactions in the thread. Within the thread, opinions split between a more sympathetic view (“the point was to train up junior producers and directors, so a huge hit was never the goal”) and a more critical one (“this is a company that can’t function without the Pokémon brand”). It should be noted that, as of this writing, no official figures for sales or development costs have been announced, so any numbers floated in the thread remain speculation.

  • Ministop Store-Closure Wave: Chain Bracing for a ¥6 Billion Net Loss

Convenience store chain Ministop, part of the Aeon Group, revealed in a January 8 disclosure that it expects a net loss of roughly ¥6 billion for the fiscal year ending February 2026. As store closures keep piling up, a thread on 5ch’s Gaming Hardware (“Geha”) board asked why customers aren’t showing up despite the chain’s signature in-store cooking and soft-serve ice cream. Posters complained about there being no stores nearby, rising soft-serve prices, bento quality, and poor customer service — though others chimed in with childhood memories and genuine affection for the soft-serve, so opinions were split.

    12AnonymousSep 9, 2026 14:47
It's because they overlap with Maibasuke (My Basket).
Also, for Uber Eats it's basically a landmark — you can order soft-serve in the middle of the night.
You should use it. Since it's Aeon-affiliated and gets haggled over by housewives all day, prices are generally cheap.
If I had to name a downside though, the bathrooms aren't great — and that's actually a big factor in getting people to stop by.

Though we could never sit still for long and would run off to play somewhere else.

Their whole "dominant strategy" (blanketing an area with stores) clearly isn't working.
There's only one location anywhere near me.
The other big chains actually have multiple stores within walking or biking distance.

    I'm not paying 400 yen for soft-serve.
At least 300 — 280 yen would be about fair.

I used to love their X Potato (a Ministop hot snack) and bought it all the time, but I haven't been lately.

If you don't go often, you just don't know how to order.
You end up wondering "will they even make one for me at this hour?" and asking feels like a hassle, and if they say no there's nothing else you wanted anyway — so you just think, forget it, not going.
    56AnonymousSep 9, 2026 16:46
You can't get soft-serve anywhere except Ministop.

Just go to McDonald's, old man.

Wait, in your head is it "Makku" or "Makudo"? (Tokyo vs. Osaka slang for McDonald's)

Re: #58 The weird giant smartphone thing at the entrance freaks me out, so I've never set foot in a McDonald's since they put those in.
I did want to try the Tsukimi Burger though (McDonald's Japan's seasonal "moon-viewing" egg burger).

    Ministop's bentos are weirdly bad.
    What's up with that?

    Re: #63
Because they're going for quantity and low price over taste.
They're cheaper than the other convenience stores, right?
    80AnonymousSep 9, 2026 18:06
Ministop just has way too few stores.
There isn't a single one near me.
Meanwhile FamilyMart, 7-Eleven, and Lawson each have two nearby.

The Big Three are one thing, but the fact that you see Maibasuke (My Basket) and Lawson Store 100 more often than Ministop kind of says it all…
    92AnonymousSep 9, 2026 18:48
I always figured the workload on staff at Ministop looks brutal, so no wonder they can't find part-timers.

Yeah, I go there sometimes and the staff really do look swamped — they've got soft-serve duty piled on top of everything else.

    Background and Talking Points

Ministop is an Aeon Group convenience store chain that has leaned on in-store cooked fast food and soft-serve ice cream to set itself apart. Neither the original article nor the thread spells this out directly, but its locations and customer base overlap heavily with Maibasuke (“My Basket”), another Aeon-affiliated grocery chain — a structural issue that’s likely behind the complaints about how few Ministop stores there are. The thread leans heavily on gripes about pricing, service, and store density, but plenty of posters also voiced real affection for the soft-serve and fried snacks, so the verdict isn’t a simple “it’s bad” or “it’s inconvenient.” It’s also worth noting the projected ¥6 billion net loss comes straight from the company’s own disclosure — separate from the thread’s gut-level complaints, factors like store-opening strategy and labor costs are almost certainly part of the real story.
