  • “Truly happy”: Haruka Kitaguchi sets Japan record and takes world No. 1 with a massive throw ranking 10th all-time, beating Chinese rival

In the women’s javelin final at the Ultimate Championship (Budapest, Hungary, September 12 / September 13 Japan time), Haruka Kitaguchi launched a throw that set a new Japan national record and ranks 10th all-time in the world, taking the gold ahead of an 18-year-old Chinese thrower whose personal best ranks 2nd all-time. On 5ch reaction threads, commenters buzzed about the form improvements since her coaching change, expressed both surprise and anticipation over the rapidly rising Chinese athlete, praised Kitaguchi’s fluency in English and Czech, and noted the news that her win locks in a wildcard spot for next year’s World Athletics Championships in Beijing.

She's probably thrilled about the record too, that's amazing. Congrats!

Is she being coached by Zelezny? …that's incredible.
    8AnonymousSep 13, 2026 08:50
I had the impression her progress stalled after switching coaches, so did the form overhaul finally pay off? Or was there some kind of equipment upgrade? I mean, an 18-year-old Chinese thrower already holding the 2nd-best mark ever…

If people start calling her "Javelor" I won't be able to stay quiet either — heading out now aiming for my 100th "peka" (a slang point/achievement counter popular in some fan communities).
    10AnonymousSep 13, 2026 08:51
Is it even possible for an 18-year-old Chinese athlete to throw the 2nd-best mark of all time?

    Haruka is so cute.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Haruka Kitaguchi was the gold medalist at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, and this latest win came on Day 2 of this season’s “Ultimate Championship.” The thread notes that her victory secured a wildcard berth for next year’s World Athletics Championships in Beijing, though the original article doesn’t specify the exact qualifying criteria. The biggest talking point was the rapid rise of the 18-year-old Chinese thrower with a mark ranking 2nd all-time — commenters speculated about changes in form or equipment advances, while others pointed out that because javelin has a small competitor pool, standout athletes can emerge more easily. It’s worth noting that this Chinese athlete injured herself on her second throw and withdrew afterward, making the head-to-head comparison limited. Praise for Kitaguchi’s English and Czech language skills also came up, which reflects a side of her already known from her regular interactions with international media.

  • Yumeno Kyusaku’s ‘Dogra Magra’ Special Edition Up for Preorder at ¥7,000 — Its ‘You’ll Go Insane’ Obi Strip Blurb Sparks Buzz

Yumeno Kyusaku’s novel Dogra Magra is famous for the striking obi (belly-band) blurb slapped on its 1976 Kadokawa Bunko paperback: “Anyone who finishes reading this will suffer a mental breakdown within hours.” Preorders for a new special edition have now become a hot topic on 5ch, where the thread mixed comments like “I’ve already got the paperback, but ¥7,000 is a tough call” and gripes about the cover design with a broader debate over which of the “Three Great Mystery Novels” — alongside The Black Death Mansion Murders and An Offering to Nothingness — still holds up as an enjoyable read today.

“Anyone who reads this through to the end is said to suffer some form of mental breakdown within a matter of hours. Whatever happens to the reader is a result of this book’s phantasmagoric, bizarre content, and we cannot be held responsible — please understand this in advance.”

This was the tagline printed on the obi strip of the first printing when Yumeno Kyusaku’s two-volume novel Dogra Magra was published by Kadokawa Bunko in 1976.

This writer (BuzzFeed Japan’s Ando) has also attempted to finish Dogra Magra, but gave up in the face of its bewilderingly convoluted structure, where it’s impossible to tell where reality ends and dream begins.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Dogra Magra is a detective novel published in 1935, grouped with Oguri Mushitaro’s The Black Death Mansion Murders and Nakai Hideo’s An Offering to Nothingness as Japan’s “Three Great Mystery Novels.” The line “will cause a mental breakdown” attached to the 1976 Kadokawa Bunko edition was the publisher’s own promotional copy — there’s no actual reader on record who finished the book and genuinely lost their mind. The thread also debated whether protagonist Ichiro Kure truly is the culprit behind the killings, along with opinions on the earlier film adaptation, though in every case interpretations stayed split thanks to the original’s notorious difficulty. This new special edition is simply a repackaging with different binding from the paperback — the story itself isn’t changing.

  • AKB Member’s TikTok-Viral ‘Isolation’ Dance: 5ch Says ‘Good Call Skipping It’

A video posted by an AKB member on TikTok, featuring an “isolation” (a dance technique where only one part of the body moves) built around big neck movements, went viral and sparked a thread on 5ch’s Hello! Some viewers reacted with amazement — “Isn’t this incredible?” and “That’s not humanly possible” — while others with dance experience gave a cooler assessment: “You’ll find tons of people who can do this at any dance school” and “It’s just an ordinary isolation.” The thread expanded into comparisons of dance skill between Hello! Re: #54
    It's 'isolation'
and it's not just about the neck

Background and Key Points of This Story

“Isolation” is a dance term for the technique of moving a single part of the body independently — the neck, shoulders, and hips are the classic examples — and it’s commonly taught as basic training at dance schools. What sparked this thread was an AKB member’s neck isolation: to an untrained eye it looks astonishing, but dancers with experience see it as just one basic technique, which is why reactions split so sharply. It’s also worth noting the thread appeared on a board that’s normally home to Hello! Project idol fans, so the AKB member’s skill level prompted comparisons with Hello! Project’s own dancing ability, along with a bit of rival needling like “Hello! Project should take notes too.” Comparing dance skill between idol groups is a perennial 5ch topic, and this thread is very much in that tradition.

*This article was compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “AKB’s insane isolation dance is going viral on TikTok — isn’t this amazing? That’s not humanly possible.”

The Los Angeles Dodgers announced on September 11 (local time) that they had placed Shohei Ohtani on the 15-day injured list (IL). Dylan Hernandez, a reporter for the local paper California Post, made a pointed comment on his own YouTube show: “Ohtani’s season is effectively over. The Dodgers are just pretending it isn’t.” The report sparked a thread on 5ch, where some posters pointed to the toll of his two-way (pitching and hitting) workload and changes in his physique, while others questioned why Ohtani was getting hit so much harder than Takefusa Kubo, whose slump was reported around the same time, and voiced distrust of a reporter who had also gone after Ohtani during the Ippei Mizuhara scandal — resulting in a mix of defense and criticism.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Ohtani has a history of elbow surgery, and the strain of his “two-way” role as both pitcher and hitter has repeatedly been a subject of debate. It’s worth noting that what the team actually announced this time is only a 15-day injured list placement — not an official statement that his season is completely over. Reporter Dylan Hernandez’s comment that Ohtani is “effectively done” is simply his own personal read, not the club’s official position. Alongside criticism of Ohtani’s condition and performance, the thread also raised the gap in coverage compared to reports of Takefusa Kubo’s slump, as well as lingering distrust toward a reporter who had also gone after Ohtani back during the Ippei Mizuhara scandal — making the media’s own reporting, and not just the players themselves, a point of contention.

Alongside warm reactions like “A sight we rarely get to see,” “This level is just right,” and “Thoroughly enjoyed it,” much of the thread veered away from the photos themselves and into a retrospective on Natsuna’s career — debating her NHK morning drama “Jun to Ai,” the star-studded cast she appeared alongside in the film “Saki,” and long-standing plastic surgery rumors.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Born in 1988, Natsuna is an actress known for playing the heroine in NHK’s 2012 morning drama “Jun to Ai,” as well as for a nude scene in the film “GANTZ” and the series “Sweet Revenge.” She married a non-celebrity man in 2018 and continues acting while raising children. Rather than reacting to the swimsuit photos themselves, much of the thread veered into older topics — debate over “Jun to Ai,” the star-studded cast she appeared with in the film “Saki,” and long-running plastic surgery speculation — a tendency typical of the Geisoku+ board. Comments making definitive claims about another actress’s dating history, or that appeared to confuse her with an unrelated celebrity’s scandal, were excluded from this article since they couldn’t be verified.

  • 100-Million-Yen Tokyo Condo Sparks Debate Over Cramped Layout vs. Prime Location

Images posted on X (formerly Twitter) showing a couple planning to buy a 100-million-yen (roughly $650,000) 3LDK condo in Tokyo went viral on 5ch. The floor plan drew attention for its low ceilings and cramped rooms, sparking shocked reactions like “100 million yen is way too much for this” and “This looks smaller than my 110,000-yen-a-month rental.” Others, though, praised the location’s access to Haneda Airport and central Tokyo, as well as its security. The thread’s focus shifted away from the merits of the property itself and toward a broader clash over renting vs. owning, and central Tokyo vs. the regions.

    Re: #105
Expensive properties also come with high management fees and reserve funds after you buy, but in exchange they handle all the security for you

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Behind the surge in Tokyo condo prices lie rising construction material and labor costs, along with growing dual-income household earnings and purchasing demand from overseas investors. This property is a textbook example of how location and infrastructure investment get baked into the price — contrary to the gut assumption that “100 million yen equals a mansion,” price here doesn’t scale with floor space. The thread split along the lines of “rent vs. own” and “central Tokyo vs. the regions,” focusing mainly on comparing lifestyle infrastructure like access to Haneda and central Tokyo against benefits such as subsidized child medical costs, while the actual merits of this unit’s design — the low ceilings, the cramped rooms — went largely undiscussed. Commenters also claimed that “rent hikes in Tokyo are brutal,” but what the thread didn’t mention is that housing costs across central Tokyo, both new-build and resale, have in fact been trending upward across the board in recent years due to rising material costs and labor shortages, making it hard to avoid paying more whether you rent or buy.

  • Black Mayonnaise’s Yoshida Asks ‘What Does “Cheese-Gyudon Guy” Even Mean?’ — 5ch: ‘It’s Code for a Weak-Looking Nerd You’re Allowed to Mock’

Comedian Takashi Yoshida of the duo Black Mayonnaise posted a question on X (formerly Twitter): “Some people online use the word ‘chīgyū’ to mock others, but what does it actually mean?” The post sparked discussion on 5ch’s Entertainment/Sports News Plus board. “Chīgyū” (literally “cheese beef bowl”) is internet slang that caught on as a jab at unglamorous-looking men assumed to enjoy cheese gyūdon (beef rice bowls), but on the thread, comments split between “I know what it means, I just don’t get the mentality of people who say it” and “Honestly, I used to say it without even knowing what it meant,” fueling a debate over the term’s origin and how it’s actually used.

This guy's turned into a full-on Twitter comedian now.

Makes you wonder where the gap with Sandwich Man came from.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

“Chīgyū” is said to have started as slang tied to an illustration, and it’s typically used to mock someone’s looks or passive personality. What split opinion on this thread was the divide between those who see the term as being used with full knowledge of its meaning, and those who think even the people using it don’t really understand it and are just riding a trend. Because the word borrows the name of an actual product — cheese gyūdon — some replies also touched on how the chains that sell it might feel about it. Much internet slang tends to spread and take on a life of its own without a clear origin or fixed definition, and the fact that a celebrity felt the need to ask what the term even means is itself a good example of just how widespread — and how vaguely defined — this kind of slang can be.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Entertainment/Sports News Plus) thread “[Entertainment] Black Mayonnaise’s Yoshida: “Some people online use the word ‘chīgyū’ to mock others, but what does it actually mean?”.”

  • Japan’s map turns almost entirely “Aeon-colored”: Waseda student’s supermarket power map shows the chain on top in 34 prefectures

A “prefecture-by-prefecture supermarket power map” made by a Waseda University student is making waves online. Created by cutting out each chain’s logo into the shape of each prefecture in Illustrator, it shows Aeon-affiliated chains (Aeon, Jusco, etc.) taking the top spot in 34 of Japan’s 47 prefectures, leaving the map of Japan almost entirely painted “Aeon color.” The thread lit up with people comparing the map to their own experience of their hometown, as well as discussion of supermarket industry history — how major chains like Daiei, Nichii (later Mycal), Seiyu, and Ito-Yokado once fought it out across the country, only to vanish one by one and be absorbed into Aeon’s dominance.

Japan’s map turns almost entirely “Aeon color”… Waseda student’s supermarket power map stuns the internet! Why Aeon tops the chart in 34 prefectures

Are all supermarkets really the same? Not even close. There are supermarkets where absolutely everything is cheap, ones known for strong private-brand products, ones stocked with fresh vegetables… Knowing how to use the different supermarkets in your area can massively boost your quality of life.

In other words, every supermarket chain has its own character, and expansion requires real strategy. It’s a free-for-all — like Japan’s warring states era.

    Re: #83
    No, that's not right.
    It's not a general merchandise store, but…

    Background and key points

This power map appears to compare chains specifically in the “general merchandise store (GMS)” category, so it’s worth noting that food-focused supermarkets are playing a different game entirely. As one commenter in the thread pointed out, “OK Store doesn’t count here since it’s a food supermarket” — this isn’t a simple head-count of stores. Aeon traces its roots to 1969, when Okadaya (Mie Prefecture), Futagi (Hyogo Prefecture), and Shiro (Osaka Prefecture) merged to form “Jusco.” Up through the 1990s, chains like Daiei, Nichii (later renamed Mycal), Seiyu, and Ito-Yokado were competing head-to-head across the country. Over time, many of these chains ran into financial trouble from overexpansion and were forced to retreat or scale back, and the industry gradually consolidated around Aeon, the chain with the most staying power. At the same time, it’s easy to overlook that a high store count doesn’t necessarily mean a high usage rate — as some commenters noted, “just because there’s one nearby doesn’t mean people actually shop there.”

A thread went up on 5ch’s “Hello! Project” board about a Yahoo! News article reporting the graduation of Angerme member Suzu Hashisako. It started because the article’s Yahoo comments section filled up with a flood of “Who?” posts, which thread members pointed out is a “standard reaction” seen not just for Hello! Project news but also for Hinatazaka46 and Sakurazaka46 stories. Meanwhile, other replies dug into the effort and psychology behind bothering to type “Who?” on an article about an idol you’ve never heard of, and opinions split over whether it’s just mockery or a reflection of the idol’s lack of name recognition.

Whether a thread goes up or not just depends on the whim of whoever starts it, right?

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Yahoo comments require phone-number verification, leaning toward real-name use, yet commenters in the thread pointed out that it’s even more brutal there than on anonymous forums. Part of the reason is that even top-tier members from groups outside Hello! Project — like Nogizaka46’s Mai Shiraishi or Nanase Nishino — have only limited recognition among the general public. Morning Musume went through a similar “Wait, are they still around?” reaction when Sakura Oda graduated, and many in the thread saw this as a repeat of that pattern. The point of contention was whether to read the “Who?” comments as proof of low name recognition or just idle mockery — and opinions in the thread never fully converged.

    39AnonymousSep 13, 2026 09:10
In my next life I want to be a guy tall enough to stand next to Yuchami without looking out of place
    56AnonymousSep 13, 2026 09:17
She could've been a superstar if she'd gone into women's pro wrestling

    Re: #56
Being tall alone doesn't make you a superstar
You never know until you try
    75AnonymousSep 13, 2026 09:23
    She's about even in height with Abareru-kun, who's 179cm

    Re: #75
I already knew about Yuchami so that's no surprise, but I'm shocked Abareru-kun is around 180cm
I figured he was more like 170 because of his build, but he's actually huge

    Re: #1
For reference, Akiko Wada is 174cm

    Re: #82
So that means she's even taller than Akiko Wada
They actually appeared on TV together before and joked about this
    87AnonymousSep 13, 2026 09:30
Height isn't really that important for women
    Actually, nobody even cares
    96AnonymousSep 13, 2026 09:34
    Re: #87
That was true in the past
These days it's universal — women look better when they're tall with long arms and legs
    92AnonymousSep 13, 2026 09:33
Yuchami is tall for a Japanese woman, and probably tall even among Western women
but walking around Minami [Osaka], which has seen a huge influx of foreign tourists, I see women about as tall as me (179cm) several times a day

    Re: #92
In Tokyo too, you see a fair number of women around 180cm during the commute
I'm 177cm myself, and I see quite a few high school girls even taller than me

It feels like they picked tall Yuchami as the presenter specifically to play up the height gap with the jockeys, and I'm not really a fan of that
    104AnonymousSep 13, 2026 09:37
    Re: #102
    Wasn't she doing a horse-racing show?
    That's probably why

So is he actually a shorty? ("Chibita," a stock nickname for a short guy)

    Background and Talking Points

The average height for Japanese women is said to be around 158cm, which actually puts Yoko Kumada’s 164cm above average. Still, she came off looking “small” simply because Yuchami’s height is so extreme — some in the thread even speculated that Yuchami’s real height must exceed her official profile figure of 176cm. That said, it’s worth remembering that celebrities’ published heights often don’t match their real measurements due to heels or agency rounding, and photo angles or camera placement can easily exaggerate an apparent height gap. The thread also branched into comparisons with other celebrities like Akiko Wada and Abareru-kun, expanding into a broader discussion of how height debates tie into how women’s looks get judged. Comments about her “real height” remain unverified speculation and should be read with that in mind.
