Chunichi’s Minor-League ‘Dragon Ball Park’ Plan Hits a Wall — 5ch: ‘Just Call It Dragons Ball Park’

The story

At an August 28 city council session, Kiyosu Mayor Sumio Nagata said that using the name “Kiyosu Dragon Ball Park” — a proposal tied to the city’s bid to host a Chunichi Dragons minor-league stadium — faces “extremely tough” obstacles due to copyright issues. The plan envisioned tying in with “Dragon Ball,” the work of Kiyosu native Akira Toriyama, and the city had contacted a Tokyo-based rights management company in June to ask whether use of the name would be permitted. As of August 19, the company had only replied that it “cannot answer at this time.” On 5ch, reactions ranged widely, from alternative suggestions like “Just call it Dragons Ball Park” to questions about spending tax money on the stadium project itself.

Sumio Nagata, mayor of Aichi Prefecture’s Kiyosu City — which is bidding to host a minor-league stadium for the pro baseball team the Chunichi Dragons — said on the 28th that the “Kiyosu Dragon Ball Park” stadium concept, which would tie in with the work of Kiyosu-born Akira Toriyama, creator of the globally popular manga and anime “Dragon Ball,” faces “major obstacles, including copyright, that are extremely difficult to overcome.”

He was responding to a question in city council from councilman Tetsuo Takahashi, who originally proposed the concept. The city emailed a Tokyo-based copyright management company in June to ask whether use of the name would be permitted, and on the 19th of this month received a reply stating, “We cannot answer at this time.”

"Dragon Ball" as an official name, lol
What about Base⭐Ball too?
6AnonymousAug 28, 2026 18:50
Pointless.
No need for a collab at all.
8AnonymousAug 28, 2026 18:51
Just call it Dragons Ball Park, that's fine.
9AnonymousAug 28, 2026 18:51
Re: #1
It's pretty rich to just one-sidedly ask them to lend the name for free, lol
13AnonymousAug 28, 2026 18:51
If it were Akira Toriyama, an honorary Nagoya native, he'd probably have happily let them use the name for free.

Re: #13
Kiyosu isn't Nagoya, though.
14AnonymousAug 28, 2026 18:52
Can't they just change the name?
17AnonymousAug 28, 2026 18:52
Giving a minor-league stadium a name like that, though…
18AnonymousAug 28, 2026 18:53
"Dragons Ball Park" would be fine.
The other one's really pushing it.
26AnonymousAug 28, 2026 18:54
Re: #18
At least read Re: #1.
They're assuming an unauthorized Dragon Ball collab too.
21AnonymousAug 28, 2026 18:53
I'd be fine with it if they renamed the first team the Chunichi Shenrons.
22AnonymousAug 28, 2026 18:53
Both "dragon" and "ball" are common nouns, so I think "Dragon Ball Park" alone should be safe.
25AnonymousAug 28, 2026 18:54
Let's grab hold of Dragon Ball Park!

Re: #25
Something in this world has gone crazy~
27AnonymousAug 28, 2026 18:54
"Gorilla Park Inoue" would do just fine.
28AnonymousAug 28, 2026 18:54
Well, they can't very well sell the license overseas for like 250 billion yen and then let Japan use it for a few hundred million, can they.
31AnonymousAug 28, 2026 18:56
"Dragons Baseball Park" is fine (´・ω・`)
32AnonymousAug 28, 2026 18:56
Why not make it "Dragon Ball Park" and get permission from Tatsumi Fujinami — isn't that the natural flow?!

Let me do it, a singles match against Vader!
33AnonymousAug 28, 2026 18:56
Dragon Ball Park's probably already been locked up by Prince Mohammed and Macron, though who knows.
34AnonymousAug 28, 2026 18:56
Re: #1
There's already an absurdly oversized, bizarre theme park planned overseas — they should drop this.
The hometown would be better off with exhibits tied to his actual work, like a recreated manga studio room.

Know your place — pairing a globally, planet-scale IP with a declining game of catch-the-ball is out of line.
37AnonymousAug 28, 2026 18:56
Stuff like this always crops up once a manga artist passes away.
38AnonymousAug 28, 2026 18:57
Dragons Ball Park is fine, isn't it.
40AnonymousAug 28, 2026 18:57
There used to be a show combining comedy duos Drunk Dragon and Football Hour called "Drunk & Ball Hour."
41AnonymousAug 28, 2026 18:57
How about naming it after the Kiyosu Conference instead — like "Sanposhi Park"? (Sanpōshi, the young Oda Hidenobu, was the heir decided at the historic 1582 Kiyosu Conference)
42AnonymousAug 28, 2026 18:57
Why not just pay a fair enough price to actually convince them (´・ω・`)
43AnonymousAug 28, 2026 18:57
Wouldn't it be better to spend that construction money on strengthening the team instead?
44AnonymousAug 28, 2026 18:57
Aiming to cash in on Dragon Ball fans' misunderstanding.
46AnonymousAug 28, 2026 18:58
There's a racehorse named Tigers Park.
60AnonymousAug 28, 2026 19:01
Dragon Ball is a cash cow for Bird Studio, Toho, and Shueisha — there's no way they'd sell it cheap.

The city's ulterior motive of trying to use it on the cheap just because it's "Toriyama's hometown" is blatantly obvious, which is probably why they were told, "Don't disclose the content or our answer."
64AnonymousAug 28, 2026 19:03
Re: #60
Correction:
not Toho, it's Toei.
79AnonymousAug 28, 2026 19:08
I heard the Dragon Ball theme park in Saudi Arabia is also unauthorized — I wonder if that's true.
92AnonymousAug 28, 2026 19:14
Re: #79
Some Saudi entity is apparently a Shueisha shareholder.
102AnonymousAug 28, 2026 19:17
Because of rights issues, even on autograph boards Slime and Arale/Goku can't appear together — such a waste. (Slime is from Dragon Quest; Arale and Goku are Toriyama's own Dr. Slump/Dragon Ball characters, but cross-company rights keep them apart)
Please reprint the Chrono Trigger art book.

Background and Key Points

Akira Toriyama died in March 2024 at the age of 68, and since then, facilities and events named after his hometown or places connected to him have been proposed one after another around the country. The copyright to Dragon Ball is held by Shueisha, which published the original manga, and Toei Animation, which produces the anime, among others — commercial use of character names and logos typically requires formal licensing and payment. Kiyosu City has used the fact that it is “Akira Toriyama’s hometown” as a bargaining chip, but there is little precedent for free or low-cost licensing being granted, and it isn’t unusual for rights holders to take a cautious stance. On the thread, alternative suggestions that avoid confusion, such as “Dragons Ball Park,” and questions about the tax burden of stadium construction stood out, but concrete information — such as actual construction and operating cost estimates, or the timing of a formal reply from the copyright management company — has not yet been made public, leaving it unclear whether the plan will ever come to fruition.
