Why Is Dragon Quest’s New Spell ‘Behoimu’ So Hated? 5ch Debates Spell-Naming Conventions

From our other sites

The story

Dragon Quest’s new spell “Behoimu” has arrived as a mid-tier healing spell slotting in between Behoimi and Behoma, sparking debate on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry board over “why is everyone hating on this?”

The thread covered everything from how easily confused the name is with Behoimi, to recent spell-naming trends like Magic Barrier and Bagimucho, to how the spell addresses HP inflation in versions like the HD-2D remake — with opinions split for and against.

Wouldn't it be fine to have one more stat-scaled single-target heal slotted in before Behoma?
3AnonymousAug 27, 2026 16:55
The only Dragon Quest spell name I can think of that's actually hated is Bagimucho.
5AnonymousAug 27, 2026 16:56
Re: #3
Part of the backlash is also that "Magic Barrier" is just plain English.
23AnonymousAug 27, 2026 17:09
Re: #5
And this is smack in the middle of all the coined spell names Horii dreamed up out of love for Wizardry.
70AnonymousAug 27, 2026 18:04
Re: #5
Mahoton
Mahokanta
Mahotora
Mahosute
Mahokite
— they all matched, and then suddenly it's "Magic Barrier"…
Since it's basically the magic version of Fubaha, they could've just called it Mahobaha or something.
4AnonymousAug 27, 2026 16:55
Too much hassle, I'll just stick with Behomara.
6AnonymousAug 27, 2026 16:56
I wish they'd design the story around three tiers being just the right amount.
9AnonymousAug 27, 2026 16:58
It's not hated — you're the one people hate for starting this thread.
10AnonymousAug 27, 2026 16:59
It's confusing with Behoimi, and bumping everything up to four tiers is starting to feel like overkill.
93AnonymousAug 27, 2026 18:51
Re: #10
You can't tell from the name alone whether it's stronger or weaker than Behoimi.
11AnonymousAug 27, 2026 17:00
Spells should've stuck with the 5-character name limit.
12AnonymousAug 27, 2026 17:01
Just slapping the English word on there as-is is so over.
15AnonymousAug 27, 2026 17:02
Even Super Saiyan only goes up to 3, and there are only 3 kinds of Metal Slime.
19AnonymousAug 27, 2026 17:06
Mera, Meramy, Merazoma work great as a trio — bumping it to 4 tiers would just feel wrong.
48AnonymousAug 27, 2026 17:39
Re: #19
Meragaia sounds way too uncool. Iogrande's fine, I guess. But Bagimucho makes you wonder if they're even trying anymore.
20AnonymousAug 27, 2026 17:07
Forget the new spell — they need to deal with Hyadain first (a musician who took his stage name from DQ's ice-spell line).
21AnonymousAug 27, 2026 17:08
Re: #7
A group-cast spell that got wiped from existence entirely… and there was a DQ-obsessed artist who went and took that very name for himself lol
24AnonymousAug 27, 2026 17:10
Behoimi heals 80 — got it. Behoma is a full heal — got it. Behomara heals about 80 to the whole party — that one I don't get.

Would "Behoimy" not have worked?

These days there's also:
Lightning-Fast Meragaia
Raging Gale Bagimucho
Ice Block Mahyadedosu
Chain-Cast Dorumadon
Exploding Doganutarosu

Re: #28
Majirumba Samba! (a joke name mashing up "Majin" with the dances rumba and samba)
36AnonymousAug 27, 2026 17:20
Re: #28
There's more:

"Bagi, Sealed Since Ancient Times"

Re: #28
This is a case of not knowing about Flashing Begiragon.

On the flip side, Bomie blends right in like it's always been there, no weirdness at all.
Zao makes sense functionally — you need revival available from low levels or it's a real problem.
29AnonymousAug 27, 2026 17:16
Honestly, just give me a group-heal version of Behoimu.
63AnonymousAug 27, 2026 17:56
Re: #29
Yeah, and a group-cast version of Hoimi would be nice too.
31AnonymousAug 27, 2026 17:18
Zao caught me off guard too 🤭
58AnonymousAug 27, 2026 17:49
Re: #31
Zao's a must-have — a revival spell that fails one out of three times would be brutal that early in the game.
41AnonymousAug 27, 2026 17:30
Old-school fans just think, "Isn't Behoma good enough?"
49AnonymousAug 27, 2026 17:41
Re: #41
But the second enemies start casting Behoma too, you'd be the first one calling it a trash game, right?
43AnonymousAug 27, 2026 17:33
Re: #1
Can't be helped — HP caps hit 999 now…
Hoimi and Behoimi barely heal 100 HP at best.
Even Behoimu only heals around 160-180 HP, you know?
If the series keeps going like this, it's obvious they'll need new mid-to-high-tier healing spells, right?
Even some random kid could've predicted that after Behoimu we'd get something like "Behoime" or "Behoimo" next.
47AnonymousAug 27, 2026 17:37
Re: #43
These days even Priests routinely break 1000 HP, don't they?
50AnonymousAug 27, 2026 17:41
Re: #43
Shin Megami Tensei V also caps HP at 999, and that game's balance is just fine.
51AnonymousAug 27, 2026 17:41
I think Dragon Quest X uses Behoimu a lot.
52AnonymousAug 27, 2026 17:43
Re: #51
Was about to write that myself and got beaten to it.
Since player HP has inflated so much, it's handy for when Behomara alone can't heal enough.
54AnonymousAug 27, 2026 17:44
I think the HD-2D remake of DQ1 would be pretty brutal without Behoimu.
66AnonymousAug 27, 2026 17:59
Re: #54
There being no other way to heal is one thing, but what really gets me is how long it takes to learn it.
How long are they gonna make us rely on Rihoimi?
67AnonymousAug 27, 2026 18:01
Bagimucho sounds just like Karamucho (the spicy potato chip brand).
Also, other final-boss names I'm not a fan of:
Pisaro, Orgodemira, that sort of thing —
they sound Italian, or Portuguese, or Mexican, or Spanish, whatever,
but that modern-sounding vibe just doesn't sit right with me.

Re: #67
Bashirura: "I've been forgiven" (Bashirura is DQ's infamous spell that randomly teleports party members away — long reviled, but forgiven now by comparison)
72AnonymousAug 27, 2026 18:06
Re: #70
For what it's worth, the single-target version is called Mahobaria.
75AnonymousAug 27, 2026 18:07
Re: #72
When it first showed up in DQ7, there was no Mahobaria though.
91AnonymousAug 27, 2026 18:49
Honestly, Behoma's MP cost makes no sense. In Atlus games, the equivalent spell costs two or three times as much.
96AnonymousAug 27, 2026 18:54
Re: #91
On top of that, it eats up one of your precious skill slots, so you end up figuring a Gem item will do just fine instead.
