The story

Daizen Maeda, who joined Premier League side Ipswich Town from Celtic this summer, scored his first Premier League goal in the away match against league leaders Manchester City on Matchday 7, played locally on October 17. Trailing 1-0 in the 21st minute, he broke in behind the defense and drilled a left-footed shot to level the score. Since his move, Maeda had been getting playing time but struggling to find the net, so the thread was split between celebration and harsh verdicts like “he’s just not cutting it technically in the Premier League,” with the discussion spreading into comparisons with Ao Tanaka, who’s also adjusting to a new league this season at Leeds.

In Premier League Matchday 7, played locally on October 17, Ipswich Town — who signed Daizen Maeda from Celtic this summer — took on mighty Manchester City away at the Etihad.

Maeda, starting the match, scored his first ever Premier League goal.

Down 1-0 in the 21st minute, he ran onto a pass from behind the defense and struck a left-footed shot home to level the match.

No way
Maeda's incredible

Re: #2
But Maeda's actual play hasn't really been cutting it in the Premier League
He can't seem to beat out Enciso
45AnonymousOct 17, 2026 23:47
Re: #39
Maeda's technique is poor and his shooting itself isn't great either
He's just fast

Re: #39
Maeda's gotten bad reviews in every Premier League match so far
Guess the Scottish league really is like a 4th-tier competition after all
5AnonymousOct 17, 2026 23:35
Ao Tanaka scored against both Chelsea and Liverpool, ran riot against Man United too,
and took down Arsenal's Saka and Rice, getting rave reviews 😘 wow ("wow/ワオ" is a mocking nickname fans use for Tanaka's hype)

Re: #5
And then he screws it up at the crucial moment

Re: #5
Rice's been singling out Tanaka for praise for a while now
And sure enough, Tanaka went and shut Rice down, keeping Arsenal to a clean sheet
Rice has got a good eye for talent

Lol, it's like a photo of Japan's problem child getting shaken down for cash overseas

My friend is amazing — he lives in an 85-story tower condo in central Tokyo, keeps ¥100,000 loaded on both his Suica and PASMO transit cards, scored 942 on the TOEIC, and drives a Lamborghini with manual windows. Oh, and back in his school days he apparently cleared just over 6cm in the pole vault, graduated from Waseda University's med school, and is already a board-certified neurosurgeon at 26. (A well-known 5ch copypasta built on absurd, self-contradicting exaggerations — e.g. Waseda has no med school, 6cm is a laughably low vault.)

Re: #5
Tanaka's just better
And he's a defensive midfielder, so he's stuck deeper with way fewer scoring chances to begin with
11AnonymousOct 17, 2026 23:37
Maeda plays forward, so scoring is just the bare minimum expected of him
If anything, he'd get run out of town for NOT scoring
13AnonymousOct 17, 2026 23:37
Though Haaland's since put them back in front
15AnonymousOct 17, 2026 23:38
Maeda's got great shot accuracy — he's the best penalty taker on the Japan national team too

Re: #12
Don't spread fake news, Dortmund fanboy (likely a Haaland supporter)
Tanaka makes fewer mistakes than most other players
Haters are just jealous he's doing too well, so they're running a smear campaign

Re: #14
Nice, you clearly know how to use that correctly
19AnonymousOct 17, 2026 23:39
Re: #12
Exactly the opposite
There's clear data showing the defense gets stronger, concedes fewer goals, and the win rate goes up with Tanaka on the pitch
And that's from legit overseas expert sources too
Tanaka has the best win rate on Leeds

Those are Championship-only numbers, nice try (lol)

Guess the team's finally figured out how to use Maeda

Where can I even watch the Premier League? Why can't I watch it on TV like Ohtani? This is so frustrating

Bulldozing through their big defender for that goal — incredible
44AnonymousOct 17, 2026 23:47
Being fast and physically strong really suits the Premier League, doesn't it
48AnonymousOct 17, 2026 23:47
Re: #44
He's not physically strong
His technique's poor too
He's just fast
54AnonymousOct 17, 2026 23:48
Re: #44
That's exactly why he hadn't scored until now — it just doesn't suit him
And he's had the lowest match rating in almost every single game
52AnonymousOct 17, 2026 23:48
Moriyasu only sees Maeda as a defensive option, so goals like this never happen for Japan
55AnonymousOct 17, 2026 23:49
Re: #52
He's literally not cutting it in the Premier League either
No wonder he's not trusted on the attacking side
57AnonymousOct 17, 2026 23:50
Lol, Wao-shin sees enemies in every direction (a mocking nickname for overzealous Tanaka-fan posters who see rivalry everywhere)

Re: #57
They're just dropping other players' names to stir up rivalry
Wish they'd get instantly banned like they did during the World Cup

Lately they're even smearing players who aren't in the same position
Wao-granny's working overtime, lol

For some reason, there are a lot of one-off accounts posting and it's oddly irritating ("one-off" = suspected single-post sockpuppet accounts)

Wait, the other guy just tripped over his own feet
And they even dubbed in a 'thud' sound effect right as he fell, lol

Re: #69
He fell because Maeda sent him flying with a shoulder-elbow-hip barge
77AnonymousOct 17, 2026 23:54
City's in first place right now, huh.
Delivering the goods in a high-profile match like this sets them up well going forward.

Re: #77
With the sanctions, they're looking at a points deduction at minimum
Relegation to the second division is even on the table

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Before his transfer, Maeda had been in the thick of the goal-scoring race in the Scottish league with Celtic, but in the Premier League his speed wasn’t translating into goals, making for a rough start to the season. The thread’s comparison with Ao Tanaka doesn’t fully hold up, since Tanaka plays a more defensive role with a different volume of scoring chances and a different team function — a straight comparison is a stretch. It’s also worth flagging that Manchester City’s alleged financial rule breaches referenced in the thread (the so-called 115 charges) are still under review at the time of writing, so a points deduction or relegation isn’t a confirmed outcome yet.
